  • ORANGE COUNTY GREAT PARKCLIENT: ORANGE COUNTY GREAT PARK CORPORATIONPROJECT SIZE: 1,145 ACRES / 45 ACRES COMPLETED CONSTRUCTION BUDGET: $1.5 BILLION

THE ORANGE COUNTY GREAT PARK IS AN AMBITIOUS OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP A BEACON OF PUBLIC AMENITY AND LOW IMPACT DEVELOPMENT FOR THE GROWING SUB-URBAN COUNTY AND TO BRING IDENTITY AND A CORE TO THE REGION. THE GREAT PARK REFLECTS THE DESIGN TEAM AND LOCAL COMMUNITYS VISION FOR WHAT A LARGE URBAN PARK IS MOVING INTO THE 21ST CENTURY. THE PARK ENCAPSULATES GOALS AND OBJECTIVES ESTABLISHED AT THE PROJECT COMMENCEMENT TO RESPECT THE HISTORY, ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY, INCORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY, AND ESTABLISH DESIGN DISTINCTION FOR A STRONG SENSE OF PLACE.

I JOINED THE DESIGN TEAM EARLY IN THE PROCESS AND IMMEDIATELY BEGAN WORK DEVELOPING THE GREAT PARK MASTER PLAN SETTING A FRAMEWORK FOR THE APPLICATION OF THE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE FUTURE GREAT PARK. AFTER COMPLETING THE STATE AND NATIONALLY AWARDED MASTER PLAN WE FURTHER DETAILED THE VISION IN THE SCHEMATIC DESIGN DRAWINGS. I MANAGED THE DEVELOPMENT OF PARK DISTRICTS; TRABUCO ENTRY, BOSQUE, FIELDS & MEADOWS, AND PROMENADE OF SENSES, AS WELL AS THE CIRCULATION SYSTEMS AND CLIENT AND STAKEHOLDER COORDINATION. I ARGUED FOR AND DEVELOPED THE PRESERVATION DRAWINGS WHICH LOCATED AND ITEMIZED NATURAL AND FABRICATED ELEMENTS OF INTEREST AND MADE SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE USE IN THE PARK.

IN ORDER TO BUILD REGIONAL SUPPORT IT WAS IMPORTANT THAT PUBLIC AMENITIES BEGIN OPENING EARLY. WE ESTABLISHED A YEARLY OPENING OF RECENTLY COMPLETED PARK STARTING WITH THE GREAT PARK BALLOON OPENED IN 2008, THROUGH TO THE PALM COURT AND NORTH LAWN OPENED IN 2011 AND THE COMMUNITY GARDEN OPENING IN 2012. I ASSISTED IN COMPLETION OF CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS FOR THESE COMPLETED PROJECTS.

  • Lets play on the slides. See you at the top.

That was a very interesting exhibit.

    Lets go Panthers Lets go!

    I remember serving with him.

    Do you smell the blossoms?

Are you ready to bike the entire canyon.

Marvelous. An innovative and sustainable approach to ecology, people, and history on an amazing scale. ASLA National Awards Jury

The initial few elements of the masterful design created by Ken Smith and his Great Park Design Studio are in place. Though the future of the Great Park may not play out exactly as the visionary Mr. Smith originally planned, a walk around the portion of the park now in play reveals that his genius is truly in the details. If done right and managed well, the Great Park will become one of Orange Countys most innovative and inspiring spaces. Coast Magazine

The Orange County Great Park Comprehensive Master Plan sets a new precedent for the transformation of both a community and a landscape at a regional scale. APA National Awards Jury

  • PACKING DISTRICTCLIENT: CITY OF ANAHEIM REDEVELOPMENT AGENCYPROJECT SIZE: 4.4 ACRES CONSTRUCTION BUDGET: $12 MILLION

THE PACKING DISTRICT LOCATED IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN ANAHEIM REACTIVATES THE HISTORIC CITRUS PACKING HOUSE AND PACKARD CAR DEALERSHIP AND ADJACENT LOT INTO A FLEXIBLE PUBLIC SPACE FOR PROGRAMMED AND NON-PROGRAMMED USES. THE ADAPTIVE RE-USE OF THE HISTORIC PACKING HOUSE ILLUMINATES THE HISTORY OF ANAHEIM WHILE PROVIDING CONTEMPORARY USES. THE PACKARD BUILDING RE-USE ANCHORS THE OTHER END OF THE BLOCK AND THE FARMERS PARK TIES THE TWO BUILDINGS TOGETHER WITH AN OPEN PROGRAMMABLE SPACE.

I WAS INVOLVED FROM THE PROPOSAL PROCESS AND DEVELOPMENT OF PRELIMINARY DESIGN CONCEPTS TO CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS AND CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION. WORKING WITH THE CITY AND FUTURE PROPERTY MANAGER WE DEVELOPED A PROGRAMMING PLAN CENTERED AROUND THE AGRARIAN ROOTS OF ANAHEIM. THE CONCEPT PLAN REFLECTED AN ESTABLISHED GROUND PLANE IN WHICH THE PACKING HOUSE AND PACKARD BUILDINGS WERE SET. THIS GAVE THE ENTIRE PROJECT A COHESIVE ORGANIZATION AND A FRAMEWORK FOR MORE ORGANIC DESIGN ELEMENTS. I DEVELOPED A SITE WIDE GRID FOR ORGANIZING ALIGNMENTS OF PAVING, TREES, AND LIGHTING. I DEVELOPED CONCEPTUAL GRADING PLANS, A CHALLENGE ON AN OTHERWISE FLAT SITE.

WE THEN OVERLAYED THE GROUND PLANE WITH UNIQUE COMPONENTS FOR SHADE, BOARDWALK, AND SITE FURNISHINGS. WE INTEGRATED RAIL CARS AS DECK SPACE ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE BUILDING ADDING PROPORTIONAL VOLUME TO THE STARK SOUTH SIDE OF THE PACKING HOUSE. WE INTEGRATED AN AT GRADE BOARDWALK ALONG THE PRIMARY CORRIDOR AND FARMERS MARKET. WE INTRODUCED ORCHARDS AND WINDROWS, A RIFF ON AGRARIAN PRACTICES. EACH OF THESE ELEMENTS WERE INTEGRATED BY THOROUGH DETAILS, ELEVATIONS AND MODELING. I COMPLETED CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS AND PERFORMED CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION FOR THE COMPLETED PACKARD BUILDING, PACKING HOUSE AND THE UNDER CONSTRUCTION FARMERS PARK.
