I LOVE PARIS IN THE SPRINGTIME!

Sarah Nesbitt Artecona University of MiamiCGCC [email protected]

It’s that time of year, spring is upon us (yes, earlier than the

rest of the country, but we are in South Florida). Spring is also important for our Chamber event calendar. The majority of our Chamber events take place now through Goals conference in June. So make sure to sign up for the 2010 AXA Advisors Businesswomen of the Year Awards on Friday, March 12, Baptist Health’s 15th Annual Tour of the Gables on Saturday May 22, and the TotalBank Golf Classic on Friday, June 4 just to name a few.

The next several months your Chamber leadership will be on the road. March 9-11 we will join the annual Washington, DC fly-in with the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and Miami-Dade County to meet with our legislators. On Wednesday, March 24 we’ll do the same flying in for one day to Tallahassee. And then April 17-25 it’s Paris, Leon, Nice and Aix-en-Provence, France mixing a trade mission and sister city trip with the Beacon Council and the City of Coral Gables. While we’ll be very busy with meetings planned from dawn until dusk, I hope to get in some of the sights with our Chamber President who has never visited the City of Lights!

As far as my Chamber year initiatives, I am happy to report a big one has been

checked off the list. The Super Art in the Park, our contribution to the South Florida Super Bowl, was a huge success. To those of you who did not make it out to Harnett Park, it was a beautiful evening, great live bands and terrific food. Thanks again to Mike Wurster of the Westin Colonnade and his committee that made it all happen!

I do have several items to get through before my year is finished, although I can’t believe it is already half over! Our Permitting Assistance Workshop with the City of Coral Gables (March 31), moving Streetscape forward and continuing our Small Business efforts. So much to do, so little time!

Thanks again for your support of the Chamber.

PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE - SEE THE POSSIBILITIES!

3

Mark A. Trowbridge, President & CEOCoral Gables Chamber of [email protected]

This past month, I spent my CEO (Chamber Education Outreach) Workday at I-Designs Optical Boutique on Miracle Mile. This little gem of a store

has been in downtown Coral Gables since 1996 and at 210 Miracle Mile for the past five years. Helena Ulloa, the owner and visionary leader behind I-Designs, is a registered optician and retail genius who took a risk nearly 14 years ago and opened her own store right here in Coral Gables. She recalls her first days in business fondly, including walking door-to-door to introduce herself to neighboring retailers, many of whom are still here on the Mile.

Her store is absolutely gorgeous and from the moment you walk in, you feel right at home. There is no pressure to buy and the boutique boasts an endless number of high-end frames in the most sophisticated styles to sample (Chrome Hearts, Tom Ford, Rayban, Alexander McQueen and more). As a matter of full disclosure, I have bought my own sunglasses and eyeglasses from Helena in the past and the experience was amazing. She is honest (to a fault) and if a pair of glasses does not look good on you (me of the wide-faced set here), she lets you know. You see, Helena sees eyewear as more fashion than mere function and she describes her products as works of art.

I watched her in action as customers came into the store during the afternoon and tried to emulate her warm style and enormous smile.

Again, there was no pressure to buy – even if a client tried on 100 different pairs in what I might characterize as a painstaking process and she was patient, honest, and effervescent. I-Designs stands behind every purchase and they want their customers to be happy. Happy! Now that is something special.

While I learned a little bit about the history of the business from Melody, a store associate, Helena continued to wait on customers, unpacked the latest in hot French eyewear she had seen at a recent trade show, and resolved the issue of a broken pair of eye-glasses for a client. I-Designs is a quintessentially small business – all hands on deck at all times, the high-wire balancing act of busy days and quiet days, and the pressure to stay ahead of the curve on the latest trends in eyewear. And yet, there is that delicious smile from Helena that envelops you, even as I fumbled my way through a mock fitting with her – my large hands leaving fingerprints galore, along with my inability to tell the difference between mauve and purple.

There is no stronger survivor in the business world these days than the American retailer. Most have put all of their energy, resources, and dreams into their businesses, and in this economy that has been a tall order to maintain.

If you are in the market for a new pair of sunglasses or need your eyeglass prescription filled (or another pair to match that new suit you just purchased), visit Helena and her amazing team at I-Designs. They embrace excellence and truly make each customer feel like a special member of the family.

Go and see the possibilities at I-Designs and experience a world of fashion, function, and frivolity.

For more information about I Designs, please call 305-774-6900.

The Cultural A f f a i r s Committee of the Coral Gables Chamber of

Commerce presents our annual Theatre Night at Actors’ Playhouse at Miracle Theatre on Thursday, March 4th at 7:00 p.m. with the hit Broadway play Miss Saigon.

This classic love story is brought up-to-date in one of the most stunning theatrical spectacles of all time!

This internationally acclaimed epic is universal in its emotional power and deals with controversial, contemporary issues.

In the turmoil of the

Vietnam War, an American soldier and a Vietnamese girl fall in love, only to be separated during the fall of Saigon. Their struggles to find each other over the

ensuing years create an unparalleled drama and a must see musical theatrical experience.

Executive Producing Director Barbara S. Stein

considers Miss Saigon to be among one of her favorite musical theatre experiences.

“It’s been my desire to present this spectacular musical with all of its glory and grandeur to our audiences for years. After our successful production of Les Misérables last season, I’m confident that our South Florida audiences will embrace our signature production of Miss Saigon.”

$30 for Members with RSVP by Monday, March 1. (includes a reception from Miss Saigon Restaurant)

$40 On-Site Registration and Future Chamber Members.
