FFA: Feeding the World – Starting at Home


What is FFA?

• Makes a positive difference in students’ lives by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agriculture education.

Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve

• FFA is structured on three levels: local, state and national.


• FFA is embarking on a multi-year plan to engage youth as part of the solution to hunger

• Working from a two-pronged approach– Educate teachers and youth on the

challenges of food insecurity – Engage members at the local, state and

national level in hunger relief efforts

Feeding the World – Starting at Home


• Living to Serve Grant Programs– Rural Youth Development – funded by

the USDA/NIFA– FFA: Food For All – funded by the

Howard G. Buffett Foundation and Farmers Feeding the World

• Foundation of both grant programs is service-learning

Fighting Hunger in Rural Communities


• A teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities

• Two major pillars - service and educational outreach to the community

What is Service-Learning?


• Youth in rural communities develop and implement service-learning projects based on local needs

• 72 chapters funded in 17 states

• 38 chapters have created projects to fight hunger

Rural Youth Development (RYD)


• Youth in rural, urban and suburban communities develop and implement sustainable SL projects focused on fighting hunger

• 140 chapters funded in 41 states

• Impacts gathered by November 2012
