To start, open Microsoft Word

and change the font size to 20 pts.

It’s exciting to see the words you type in large font

Important

If you look at the keys, you find the key you want,

BUT you learn NOTHING!


First, we split the keyboard into two sidesIt’s easier to learn one side at a time

OK, BUT where do we start?It’s just a lot of letters


You have FOUR fingers on your LEFT hand

. . . and there are FOUR Home keyson the LEFT side of the keyboard, A S D F


Your pinky finger types A,your ring finger types S,

your middle finger types Dand your pointer finger types F


Place your FOUR fingers on the FOUR Home keys, A S D F

Feel the “bump” on the F key.

It helps you place your fingers on the Home row


To remember this sentence,

THINK many Animals eat grass and, in the Snow,

they would have to Dig for Food

TYPE A S D F and SAY ALOUD Animals in the Snow Dig for Food

Do this 10 times


Place your fingers on the Home keys

TYPE add as dad fad sad

Between words, press the space bar with your RIGHT thumb

Now, you TYPE five WORDS, WITHOUT looking at the keyboard


So, how do you type G?

BUT wait, there’s another letter in the middle row and you don’t have any more fingers on your LEFT hand


Place your fingers on the Home keys TYPE A S D F G and SAY ALOUD

Animals in the Snow Dig for Food like Grass

Do this 10 times

Your Food finger does DOUBLE the work and moves over to G


Place your fingers on the Home keys TYPE gag gas sag

Now, you TYPE three words, WITHOUT looking at the keyboard


Well done! You have learned the LEFT side Home row and G

OK, BUT how do you type the top and bottom row letters?


Your FOUR Home key fingers move UP to the top row and DOWN to the bottom row

OK, BUT what finger moves UP to Q and DOWN to Zand does it move in a straight line?


Your Animals finger moves UP LEFT to Q and DOWN RIGHT to Z

You will be amazed at how quickly you remember the keys!

* Curriculum words can be included


When you feel confident of the LEFT side keys, it takes another 35 minutes

to learn the RIGHT side

The sooner you “do” the RIGHT side, the sooner you can start

using your daily “real” computer work to practice

Before too long, you will be typing automatically without looking at the keyboard
