CHAPTER 1

Image Search

Most people use Google to search the Internet for content. We will start off with Google to find copyright friendly images. We will also learn how to use Yahoo and Bing to find images. Each search tool will deliver slightly different results. In most cases one search tool will provide the image you need. In some cases you might need to use two or all three of these search tools to find the right image.

LESSON 1

Google Image Search

Start your favorite browser. This works with all browsers. I will be using Firefox for my lesson, but the same can be done with Safari, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. In the address bar, type google.com.

When you do a search in Google, it automatically is set to search the World Wide Web for content. This content is usually web pages. Let’s enter a search key word for an image.

In my example I will search for images of Abraham Lincoln. As I type Abraham Lincoln, Google begins to produce live search results to my key words.

Google wants to search the Internet for web pages so web pages are automatically displayed. Below the Google search box is a list of filters. Next to the web filter we see a filter for images. Click on the images filter.

The images filter will display a large sample of images for Abraham Lincoln. The images are a mix of copyright protected and copyright friendly images. We will be using the Google filters to find copyright friendly images.

At the end of the list of filters, is a search tools menu option. Click on Search tools.

A list of Google image filters appears below the previous filters. With this filter we can select the size of the image we prefer, the color image options, the type of image, the time the image was made available and the usage rights. The usage rights is what we will use to look for copyright friendly images. Click on the Usage rights filter option.

The Usage rights filter will display five filter options. The automatic filter is to apply no filter. The other filter options fall into two categories. These are for images that will be used for commercial or noncommercial reuse. Within these categories you have the option to select the option to reuse the image with or without modification.

What does this mean? If you plan on taking an image, modifying it and then posting it back on the Internet, then you will be modifying the image. If you plan on making permanent changes to the image and them posting the image on a web page, you should use the option to reuse with modification. For most purposes you will probably be using the image for a lesson without modification. In this case I recommend you use the last option, labeled for noncommercial reuse.

The images that display are all labeled for noncommercial reuse. Any of these images can be downloaded and used in teacher or student work. These images can also be placed into products like videos or presentations and reposted to the Internet.

Bing will display several thumbnail images. Bing will also provide alternate search suggestions. Those are located below the search box. Below these alternate search suggestions are a several filters. Click on the license filter.

Bing has six filter options. Let’s look at the different filter options.

1. Public domain images are images where the copyright has expired and can be used by anyone for any reason with or without modification.

2. Free to share and use are images that can be shared and used in any product. These images cannot be modified or used in products you intend to sell.

3. Free to share and use commercially means that these images can be used in products you intend to sell.

4. Free to modify, share and use can be used for any of these options but cannot be used in products you intend to sell.

5. Free to modify, share and use commercially. This option provides the greatest freedom with images that are not in the public domain. Most images in the public domain would fall into this filter too.

I’ve indicated with arrows the options you might want to use when filtering for images in Bing. Public domain images might return the smallest number of results. The other two options will depend on how you want to use the image. If you are going to modify the image, then make sure to use the option to filter for images you can modify.

You might want to try each filter to give a broader search result.

The images will display based on your filter option. These images can be used in your lessons or student work without violating copyright.
