    TYPES OF JOINTS

Flared Joint — The pr in ci pl e o f th e f la red j oi nt w as f ir st deve lo pedfor copper tube plum bing in 1928 by NIBCO. The flared type jo int isw holly a mechanical means of joining copper tubes. The tube nut isplaced over the end of the copper tube to be joined; the tube end thenis f lared out at an approximate 45 degree angle by a f laring t ool. Thef lared end is then drawn up by the tube nut so the inside surface is

t ight ly secured against the bal l seat of the f i t t ing. This joint can bereadi ly d ismant led at any t ime and is , in ef fect , a t ype of unionconnection. Its use is generally restrict ed to soft (annealed) coppertubes s ince hard drawn tubes w ould be subject to sp l i t t ing w henflared (if the ends w ere not previously annealed). The flared ends ofNIBCO Flared Fi t t ings are produced to the requi rements of A SM EB16.26, “Cast Copper Al loy Fi t t ings for Flared Copper Tube.”

Solder Joint  — N IBCO pi on ee re d the de ve lop men t ofthe solder joint and its application to the field of copper tube piping.Today the solder joint is widely adopted, as evidenced by themajority of cit ies and states that have written codes to includecopper tube and solder joints as desirable for general plumbing,w ater l ines, vent, stack, waste and drain l ines, as w ell as other uses

in industry. Testing has show n that often t he solder joint has greaterstrength than the t ubes being joined, depending upon the solderingalloy selected. While the method of preparing a solder joint is anexacting art to insure a full strength joint, i t can be readily masteredby skil led tradesmen. It is for this reason — to insure the public ofthe protection afforded by properly prepared joints — that NIBCOproducts are marketed through the reputable sources of supply to thepiping trades. Important procedures for preparing a solder joint aregraphically i l lustrated in this catalog on page 95.

Brazed Joint — Thi s t ype o f jo in t h as lo ng been used w herever andw henever crit ical situations have been encountered in copper piping. The joint itself is completed m uch in the same manner as the solder

joi nt ; h ow ev er, co ns id er ab ly mor e he at an d se ve ra l re f in em en t s of

technique require separate procedures that are described further inthis catalog on pages 96-97.

Threaded Ends — To ad ap t copper tube to eq ui pm ent ha vi ngNational Standard Pipe Taper (NPT) threads or to add copper tube toexisting iron pipe installations or ot her threaded connections, NIBCOprovides fitt ings having both external and internal NPT threads. These threaded ends are produced to the requirements of A SM EB1.20.1, “ Pipe Threads, General Purpose (Inch).”

Flanges — To ad ap t co pp er t ub e t o eq ui pm en t ha vi ng f la ng ed

connect ions, or to add copper tube to f langed pipe instal lat ions orother purposes, NIBCO provides flange s. The flanges are produced intw o standard types widely used in this f ield w here copper tube canserve — Class 150, comply wi th ASM E B16.24, “Cast Copper Al loyPipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings Class 150, 300, 400, 600, 900 , 1500and 2500” ; and Class 125, which conform to M SS SP 106, “Cast

Copper Alloy Flanges and Flanged Fitt ings Class 125, 150 and 300.”

Barbed Insert Fittings for Polybutylene (PB) — NIBCO of fer s acomplete l ine of copper barbed insert f i t t ings for j oining PB tube. Theinsert f i t t ings are produced to the requirements of ASTM F 1380.Along w ith the insert f i t t ings are copper cr imp r ings, w hich, whenproper ly instal led, provide a leak-t ight mechanical joint . WHAT MAKES A PLUMBING SYSTEM FAIL?

Failure in a copper plumbing system is rare, but may occur due to a varietyof reasons. The most common causes of failure are:

    1. Excessive fluid velocity causes erosion-corrosion or impingeme nt (to strikeor hit against) attack in the tube and/or fitting. For this reason, the copperplumbing indust ry has establish design velocity limit s for copper plumbingsystems to the fol low ing:

    H ot W a t er > 140°F (60°C) 2 t o 3 f ee t pe r second(0.6 to 0.9 meters per second)

    H ot W a t e r 140°F (60°C) 4 t o 5 f eet per second(1.2 to 1.5 meters per second)

Cold W ater 5 to 8 feet per second(1.5 to 2.4 meters per second)

    2. Local ized high velocities and/or turbulence. The presence of a dent, tubeends which are not reamed or deburred before soldering, and suddenchanges in direction can all cause localized high velocity conditions.

    3. Flux Corrosion is typified by pin hole leaks, general ly in the bottom of ahorizontal line. Fluxes are mildly corrosive liquid or petroleum-basedpastes containing chlorides of zinc and ammonia. Unless the flux isflushed from the system, i t w i l l lay in the bottom of t he tube and remainactive. ASTM B 813, “ Liquid and Paste Fluxes for Soldering Applicat ionsof Copper and Copper-Alloy Tube,” limits the corrosivity of solderingfluxes and ensures that these fluxes are flushable in cold water, whichfaci l i tates easy removal of f lux residue fol lowing instal lation.

    4. Galvanic Corrosion may be defined as the destruction of a material byelectrochemical interaction between the environment and the material .Generally, it is slow but persistent in character and requires the presenceof dissimilar metals. Galvanic corrosion requires the flow of an electriccurrent between certain areas of dissimilar metal surfaces. To completethe electr ic circuit, there must be t w o electrodes, an anode and a cathode, and they must be connected by an electrolyte media (water) through

w hich the current can pass. The amount of met al w hich dissolves at theanode is proportional to the number of electrons flowing, w hich in turn isdependent upon the potential and resistance of the t w o metals. The useof dissimilar metals in a plumbing system may or may not create aproblem. For instance, copper and steel are perhaps the most commondissimilar metal s found toget her in a plumbing system. In closed systems, such as a chi l led or heating w ater piping, the use of dissimilar metals maynot create a serious problem; this is because there is virtually no oxygenin the w ater and corrosion relations tend to be sti f led. Where dissimilarmetals must be used, some codes require that they should be separatedby dielectric union or a similar type of fitting. The effectiveness dependsupon; distance between the metals on the electromotive-force series(EM F) chart, ratio of cat hode to anode area, degree of aerat ion, amount ofagitation, temperature, presence of dissolved salts, and other factors.

    5. Dezincification is a type of corrosion in w hich brass dissolves as an al loyand the copper constituent redeposits from solution onto t he surface of thebrass as a metal , but in the porous form. The z inc const i tuent may becarried aw ay from the brass as a soluble salt, or may be deposited in placeas an insoluble compound. Dezinci f icat ion is normal ly associated w i thbrass valves w here the zinc content exceeds 15%. Generally, areas of highstress, such as valve stems and gate valve bodies, are primary targets ofattack.

    6. On rare occasion problems of corrosion by aggress ive wat er, poss iblyaggravated by poor design or w orkmanship, do exist. Aggressive, hard w ellw aters that cause pitting can be ident ified by chemical analysis and treatedto bring their composition w ithin acceptable l imit s. Typical ly these hardwaters are found to have high total dissolved sol ids (t.d.s.) includingsulfates and chlorides, a pH in the range of 7.2 to 7.8, a high conten t ofcarbon dioxide (CO2) gas (over 10 parts per million, ppm ), and the presenceof dissolved oxygen (D.O.) gas. Soft acidic w aters can cause the annoyingproblem of green staining of f ixtures or “green w ater” . Raising the pH ofsuch wat ers to a value of about 7.2 or more usually solves the problem, buta qual i f ied water t reatment special is t should be consul ted.

    7. Aggressive soi l conditions can be a cause for external corrosion of copperpiping systems. Non-uniform soil characteristics, such as different soilaeration, resistivity, or moisture properties, between adjacent sections oftube can create galvanic corrosion cells. Soils contaminated with highconcentrations of road salts or fertil izers containing ammonia, chlorides, and nitrogen are known to combine w ith w ater to form acids. Any metalpipe laid in ash or cinders is subject to attack by the acid generated whensulfur compounds combine with w ater to f orm sulfuric acid.

The mechanics of making both the solder joint and the brazing joint are comparatively similar. Complete instructionson proper techniques of both of t hese joining methods are outl ined in this catalog on pages 85-97.

A very important consideration in Copper Piping is the selection of the proper bonding medium. As a general rule, the w orkingtemperature of the installation i s a more important consideration than the w orking pressures. If the w orking temperature is not over250°F (121°C), either 50-50% * or 95-5% solder can be used succe ssfully. How ever, if t he tem perature excee ds 250°F (121°C), a lowtemperature brazing alloy should be used, w ith a melting temperature somew hat in excess of 1000°F (538°C).

According to BM S report No. 58, joints made w ith t in or t in-alloy solders should not be subject continuously to temperatures above250°F (121°C). A number of brazing alloys are available and a careful study should be made in every case to determine the properalloy for the particular application.

    * The Safe Drinking W ater Act A mendment of 1986 prohibits the use in potable w ater systems of any solder having a lead content in excess of 0.2%.

U.S. customary units in t his document are the standard; the metri c units are provided forreference only. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalent s.

DWV Tube is for sanitary drainageapplications. The tubing w all is thi nner thanType “M ” – making it both lighter and lessexpensive. Research indicates that DWV tubehas a service life of approximately 100 years –considerably longer than any building in whichit might be installed.

The advantages of copper systems areaugmented in DWV installations. Its lightwei ght makes handling and transportationeasier – on ly 0.34 lb. (0.15 kg) for a 20 ft . (6.1m) length of size 3. Its thinner wall allow s

    faster soldering.

These advantages offer an economical optionwi thout sacrificing stability or longevity forboth contractor and the home owner. Furtherinformation w ill be furnished on request fromNIBCO’s Technical Servi ces Department , at1-888-446-4226

Copper W ater Tube continuedUnder normal condit ions, the physical properties of copper tubes, w hen produced by responsible manufacturers are perfectly adaptedfor the conveyance of hot and cold w ater, steam, oil, gas, and air. Copper tubes w il l stand up under ordinary condit ions, but the user isspeci f ical ly caut ioned against laying underground tube in cinderf i l l , especial ly i f the ground is apt t o be w et. Due to the sulphur

compounds in the cinders, a condit ion of this kind may corrode the outside of the tubes. This may be overcome either by wrapping t hetube with canvas and asphaltum or by surrounding the tube with a bed of clean sand mixed with l ime, or with l imestone or brokenplaster. W hen condi t ions are doubtful , i t is advisable to consul t t he Copper Development A ssociat ion, or the tube manufacturer .

Annealed copper tubes are generally recommended for underground use. 1 / 2" annealed copper tubes have been frozen as many as sixtimes before f inally bursting, eight t imes f or 1" size, and eleven times f or 2" size. Hard drawn copper tubes, however, burst during thefirst f reezing the same as i ron pipe. (Condensed f rom Copper Tube Handboo k.)

COLUMN A: The copper tube is Type L Standard, meeting the requirements of ASTMSpecification B 88. The iron pipe is standard weight, schedule 40, bare pipe, except asto Column I where new galvanized pipe is referred to.

COLUMN B: From manufacturers’ specif ications. Slight variat ions can be noted betweenspecifications of different manufacturers, but these figures are representative.

COLUMN C: From manufacturers’ specif ications w ith the same considerati ons as notedfor Column B.

COLUMN D: From manufacturers’ specif ications.

COLUMN E: Cubic contents of 10 li near feet/ 3.05 linear metres of t ube and have been

calculated from di meters given in Column B, by the formula for t he contents of a cylinder.COLUMN F: This column has been calculated from Column E and show s the number ofBTUs (kilojoules) required to heat the water content only of 10 feet (3.05 metres) of thegiven tube and pipe 100°F (38°C). It requires 833.6 BTUs (879.5 kJ) to heat 1 gallon(3.875 lit res) of w ater 100 °F (38°C).

COLUMN G: These figures are calculated f rom Column D and show the number of BTUs(kJ) required to raise the temperature of 10 feet (3.05 metres) of empty tube and pipe100°F (38°C). Due to di fference in the specifi c heat of the mat erials, it requires 9.4 BTUs(9.9 kJ) to raise 1 pound (0.454 kilograms) of copper 100°F (38°C) and 11.0 BTUs (11.6kJ) to raise 1 pound (0.454 kilograms) of iron 100°F (38°C).

COLUMN H: This column shows the heat emission from 10 feet (3.05 metres) of the giventube and pipe placed horizontally. The column in term s of BTUs lost per hour (kilojouleslost per hour) for each degree of difference in temperature between the pipe and thesurrounding air. The figures for iron are taken from experimental data obtained at theM ellon Institute. Figures for copper have been calculated w ith reference to those for ironon the basis of the known ratio of heat emission betw een the two materials.

COLUMN I: This column shows the number of gallons (litres) of wat er which w ill fl owthrough 100 feet (30.48 metres) of the given tube and pipe with a pressure loss of 10pounds per square inch (70 kilopascals). Flow is based on diameters in Column Baccording to Professor Dawson’s formulae for NEW galvanized iron pipe and NEW

copper tube. Due to the corrosion of iron and its tendency to accumulate sedim ents andother foreign matter, Prof. Dawson suggests that 15% be deducted from the figures foriron pipe in order to arrive at a reasonable performance expectancy for such pipe inservice. Because copper resists rust and is inherently more smooth, Professor Dawsonsuggests a deduction of only 5% from the figures given for copper tube.

U.S. customary units in t his document are the standard; the metri c units are provided forreference only. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalent s.

In the majority of low -pressure heating systems employing coppertube and installed in small houses or private dw ell ings, provision forexpansion and contraction is relatively simple. M ains, r isers, andbranches to radiators should be free or f loating at one end of the

line. Holes should be large enough to permit free movement of t hetube, and care should be exercised so that pipe hangers andsupports permit unrestricted movement and do not anchor the t ube.W rought copper tube hangers that are both practicable and neat inappearance are available.

Unusually long runs of copper tubing should be provided wit h anexpansion bend or loop. By bending soft t emper copper tube, asimple form of expansion loop can be made. Wit h the addit ion ofcombination flared-tube to solder joint f i t t ings, as i l lustrated inFigure 1, these types of loops can be used w hen space or otherlimitati ons exist. The correct proportions of such expansion loop t omeet various condit ions are show n in the accompanying table.

    SELECTION OF TUBE SIZES

The smooth interior of copper tube, and the design of both solder joint and flared-tube-type fitt ings, which have no shoulders projecting into

the flow of w ater, decrease fr iction loss. With the use of copper tube, no allow ance is necessary for the accumulation of rust deposits in supplyand service lines. Consequently, copper tube lines are usually figured one size smaller than iron pipe for the same service. This rule does notapply to l ines from a w ell to a pump w here the nominal diameters specif ied by the pump manufacturer must be adhered to strictly.

W ater passing through any pipe l ine encounters resistance by fr iction. The resistance is increased by bends and turns in the l ine, w hich shouldbe taken into account in complex piping systems. For example, a one-inch 90° elbow wil l cause fr iction loss equivalent to that of one foot(0.305m) of straight one-inch tube. (See below for allow ance to be made for f it t ings and valves in equivalent lengths of tube.) Friction loss interms of head loss must be taken int o consideration in calculating tube sizes to be used for various types of i nstallations.

For most average-size-house installations with water pressures 40 PSI (275.8kPa) and higher, 3 / 4" copper tube wil l be ample for main supplylines, and 1 / 2" copper tube can be used for r isers and branches to all f ixtures. The smaller 3 / 8" tube is adequate to supply branches, but w ithpressures at 40 PSI (275.8kPa) and higher, w ater hammer becomes a concern when the flow is suddenly stopped.
