LETTER TO THE EDITOR

About this time two winters ago, at a mid-December social gathering, I wished a very progressive, always politically correct, actor friend of mine

a very sincere (OK, as sincere as I can muster with this fellow) “Merry Christmas.” To this he shot back in full projected baritone tutorial voice, “No, Tony. It’s Happy Holidays!” A couple of others within earshot chuckled. I felt exposed, like the emperor caught without his clothes. It seems I had mentioned the word that dare not be mentioned. Truthfully, the man’s blunt public castigation stunned me. I guess my face showed it. I suppose in an effort to help me save face, the man’s wife (God bless her, she has a pretty good heart) interjected, “It’s OK to say Merry, though, Tony.” I should have had the guts to speak up and defend CHRISTmas as the heart of Christmas. I had a moment. I could have risen to Christmas’s defense. I was respected in this group, and others would have listened,

perhaps even stood with me. But not wishing to trigger a scene or debate, I wimped out. The ironic thing was that I had always viewed the phrase “Merry Christmas” as the sharing of a blessing, not a “naughty” unmentionable. But in the moment of my testing, I punted. I surrendered Christmas to politically correct. As so often happens when you sell you beliefs short, I tried to sweep my shortfall under the delete-memory carpet. I left that evening advising myself, “Ah, forget it. It was just an isolated event. Don’t overreact.” I even tried to make light of it, picturing myself going around this Yuletide (Yuletide is still OK to say, isn’t it?) season, warmly greeting everyone with a clipped cheerful “Merry!”: “Merry to you, Jim,” and, “Sally, a merry!” It seemed a bit odd, but hey, maybe it better fits our life “on the run.” So, get with it, Tony. But today, two years later, in an internet search, the memory carpet was thrown back. And what I saw

bothered me more than I can mention. I happened to get on the official Postal Service website. Since I was there, I decided to check out what new stamps had been issued for this season. To my shock, the very first stamp that popped up was a blaring red one across which was written just one word. You guessed it. “MERRY!” That’s it. CHRISTMAS had finally been deleted. Who needs it? For one, I guess I do. I guess I realized MERRY for all its “fa-la-la,” was just not enough. It ran hollow. I need, my spirit NEEDS, the second word, the anchor word, without which merry falls short of its promise. The MERRY stamp is insufficient postage./s/ Anthony de la TorreOracle

Sam and Carol Hosler of Kearny celebrated 50 years of marriage on Dec. 19. Samuel Odyth Hosler and Carol Edith Smith were married on Dec. 19, 1969, in Avon, New York, while attending seminary in Rochester, New York. Sam was born in 1945 in Seligman, Arizona, during a rare snowstorm. The town hotel served as a midwife clinic. His mother said his cradle was placed on the open door of an oven to keep him warm. Sam, with his parents and sister, moved to Winslow in 1960 when his father, an engineer on the Santa Fe, was relocated there. Sam graduated from Winslow High School in 1963 and then attended the University of Arizona. Carol was born in Portland, Oregon and, during her childhood, lived in Orland, California; Buhl, Idaho; American Falls, Idaho; and Pullman, Washington. She graduated from Pullman High School in 1963 and then attended Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon. The couple met at seminary in Rochester, New York in the fall of 1968. They graduated with theology degrees in June, 1970, and moved to Phoenix. Sam was ordained an Episcopal priest at Trinity Cathedral. He served there first, then at Episcopal churches in Scranton, Pennsylvania; Delaware City, Delaware; Rupert, Idaho; St. Ignace, Michigan; and finally in the northeast region of the Episcopal Church including Winslow, Holbrook, and Show Low.

Carol could not be ordained in 1970 when Sam was because the Episcopal Church was not yet allowing the ordination of women. She worked in the intervening years in Idaho as an award-winning journalist and director of a rape crisis center. In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan she served as the director of a Native American museum and the director of the Downtown Development Authority. She was finally ordained in St. Ignace, Michigan, in 1994. When the Hoslers moved back to Arizona, they served together as priests, including volunteer work in The Episcopal Diocese of Navajoland. The couple had two sons: Joshua Luke Hosler born in 1972 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Seth Stephen Hosler born in 1975 in Kingston, Pennsylvania. Josh is an Episcopal priest in Federal Way, Washington, and Seth, fluent in Japanese, is a translator in Tokyo, Japan. Both sons are married to what Carol describes as “magnificent daughters-in-law.” Josh and his wife, Christine Ummel Hosler, have one daughter, Sarah Sophia Hosler, 14, in Seattle. Seth and his wife, Tomomi Mogushi Hosler, have one son, Noah Mogushi Hosler, 8, in Utsunomiya, Japan. The couple purchased their home in Kearny in 1997 and then retired and moved to town in 2005. Sam has been active in church and community affairs, including the Copper Basin Community Health Care Foundation, the Winkelman Natural

Rosalind Padilla stands under the sign proclaiming street at Pioneer Park as Art & Rosalind Padilla Way. James Carnes | CBN

There’s a new street in Kearny. Well, an old street with a new name. On Sunday, Dec. 15, the street that runs between Pioneer Park and the ball fields was renamed to Art and Rosalind Padilla Way. The Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce requested the rename in honor of two of the community’s staunchest supporters. For many years, Art Padilla was a strong supporter of the Little League and Ray School Sports. He was a father figure to kids in the neighborhood as well as to his own children. He welcomed you with a joke and teased until your ears turned red (or his, if you gave as good as you got). Art was the Pioneer Days set-up and clean-up crew leader, directing from his truck in his final years. As husband to the Copper Basin Chamber president, he was “volunteered” to do many things and, while he might have jokingly complained, the work still was done. Rosalind, his wife and longtime (as mentioned above) Chamber president,

is still an active member of the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce. Her years as president kept many events intact. Pioneer Days, which next year will celebrate its 60th anniversary, would not be today what it is without her help and many years as chairperson. She is named as the “strength behind the chamber.” Rosalind’s years as a teacher and as the ARC president made her popular with the younger crowd. As a mother, she supported her family through games and rodeos with strength and dignity. Her dedication to the communities, schools, ARC and church have endured her to many. Art and Rosalind never wanted public praise. But the praise is well deserved. Thank you, Rosalind, for all that you and your husband contributed to our community. Speakers at the event included Martina Burnham, Pinal County Supervisor Pete Rios and Arizona State Legislator David Cook.
