She also has many aunts, uncles and cousins, many from the Kearny area. Susie was born in Nevada, but, her family moved back to Kearny for several years. Later, they moved on to Lake Havasu City where she went to school and loved to ride the school bus. She had many friends and everyone knew Susie; she went to many events and had lots of fun. Susie had been sick a lot. Everyone at the Fire Department knew her. They treated her special. So many in town and stores knew her well She loved her brother Richard and sister Edna Marie, and other family members. Susie, you will be missed. We all love you. Services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m, at New Hope Calvary Church, 3735 London Bridge Rd. in Lake Havasu City.

Businesses, organizations, and families need a financial plan. Whether simple or elaborate, such plans are tools for

meeting our goals, anticipating problems, and developing our resources as we meet our needs. The Town of Kearny held a work session for the Town Council and all the department heads last week with Pat Walker, the town’s financial consultant. The purpose was to look at a list of town needs developed by each department, find the cost of those needs, and begin

gathering the information necessary for the Town Council to come up with a strategic financial plan to meet those needs over the next five years. It soon became evident that this will be a difficult task. Right now, Kearny simply does not have the resources to meet those needs. The population is not growing and our tax base is declining. Moreover, the town’s contingency fund (the “rainy day” fund) has been heavily used in the past few years, and the town’s old infrastructure leaves us vulnerable to expensive

emergency repairs. Everyone at the gathering agreed on the extent of the needs. It was also agreed that our plan will involve developing financial resources and/or eliminating services. That sounds pretty obvious, I know, but towns (especially small ones like ours) are intended to protect and serve the citizens. Towns must meet the standards of a business (except for making a profit) but are also meant to reflect the needs and values of our public welfare.

In a unanimous vote, the Hayden Town Council voted to hire David Blue as the police chief of Hayden. Should he accept the position he would serve the town of Hayden and then potentially work as the police chief for the combined police services of Kearny, Hayden, Winkelman and Mammoth. At press time it was not confirmed if Blue had accepted the position or when each community will hold a vote on the

Hayden to hire David Blue as police chiefconsortium. In their motion, the Hayden Council stated that even if the consortium was not approved by the other communities they would still like him to be the chief for Hayden. The Town of Kearny did not have the item on their agenda. Should Blue not accept the position, Hayden will re advertise the position. Originally there were nine candidates for the position; five were interviewed and the top three candidates moved on through the hiring process of background checks. Two made it through that process and, of those two, Blue was the only candidate passing the required background checks. The consortium was an idea presented by David Blue when he served as interim chief for all three of the communities over the course of the past two years. The declining population of the region and lack of revenue growth has created an opportunity to think outside of the box to provide public safety services for the area. The consortium, if approved by the town councils of Kearny, Winkelman, and Mammoth, would hire one chief to run the departments and have a sergeant in each community along with officers. The end result of the consortium would increase policing capacity and allow for funds in the region to not be duplicated when hiring a police chief or other services. This is the first time a consortium like this has been developed in Arizona. The Central Arizona Governments has helped to facilitate the process and discussions through the five mayors’ meetings that are held monthly and the Mayors discuss ways the communities can collaborate and work together.

Celebrating the birthday of a Winkelman landmark

On Saturday, residents of the Town of Winkelman as well as dignitaries from across the Copper Corridor celebrated the centennial of the historic Winkelman Bridge. The bridge was designed by Daniel Luten and constructed in 1916, is owned by the Town of Winkelman. It was rehabilitated in 1999 by rehabilitation engineer Jerry A. Cannon and rededicated in 2016. The Hayden football team, which is ranked No. 9 in 1A, stepped up to 2A to take in old rival San Manuel in Winkelman last Friday night. The Lobos, who were playing in their regular-season finale, took advantage of an overconfident Miners’ team in a 20 – 18 victory. “It was different,” Hayden head coach John Estrada said afterwards. “By the end of the game we were down to 12 players and just tried to get out of there healthy. It was a good experience for the kids.” San Manuel, with nearly 30 players on

its roster, had a 49-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Gabe Velasquez in the first quarter but not much more until after halftime. “We were overconfident and we underperformed during the entire first half,” San Manuel head coach Daniel Williams said. “Hayden came out, smacked us in the mouth, and did what they wanted to do.” Ryan Donovan and Brandon Cruz scored rushing touchdowns for Hayden, which scored a third touchdown on a pass play from junior quarterback Mario Mariscal to Frankie Valencia. San Manuel scored two second-half

touchdowns on a pair of passes by freshman quarterback Caleb Quintero – one to Hector Sierra and another to Julian Rodriguez. Quintero threw for nearly 200 yards in the game. “Quintero had a good game for a freshman quarterback,” Williams said. “He hung in there and played really well.” Hayden, which finished the regular season at 5 – 3, earned the No. 9-seed in the 1A State Championship Playoffs. The Lobos will play at No. 8 Mayer this Saturday in the first round. “It’s do-or-die for us now,” Estrada said. “Mayer is big and we’re just going to have to get the job done if we want our season to

continue.” After finishing last week’s game with only 12 healthy players, Estrada was asked if he expects his team to be a full strength entering the playoffs. “We’ll be ready to play Saturday,” he answered. “We have to do our job and we have to execute.” “We’re going to prepare based on what we see on film,” Estrada added. “Mayer is going to try to power us so we have to hit – like we’ve been doing all year – and execute.” The kickoff for Saturday’s playoff game is scheduled for 6 p.m. San Manuel plays at Bisbee on Friday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The No. 2-ranked Superior football team retained the Copper Helmet for the second consecutive year, defeating visiting Ray 56 – 0 in the regular-season finale for both teams last Friday night. The battle for the Copper Helmet is one of the state’s oldest rivalries. For the Panthers, Friday’s game was also Senior Night, where a special group of players were honored before the game. “These seniors, most of them have been starters for four years,” Superior head coach Ryan Palmer said after the game. “It was a special night (and) that they played their last regular-season game and kept the Copper Helmet in Superior made it even better.” Senior Edgar Galindo, who returned after missing the past couple of games with an injury, scored four touchdowns – two rushing, two receiving – in the shutout win. He also ran for a game-high 137 yards. Likely Player of the Year Nicolaus Cruz ran for a touchdown and threw three touchdown passes, including one to junior Marcos Bueno. On defense, the Panthers forced two turnovers – an interception by Austin Navarrette and a fumble recovery by Jalon Murray. Sophomore Steven Ybarra finished with a game-high 14 tackles while Galindo added 10. For Ray, the loss ended a season in which it finished with three wins, but two of them by forfeit. “The boys came out firing on all cylinders at the start,” Ray head coach Frank

Lechuga said about Friday’s game. “After the first quarter, the things that have plagued us all season starting popping up again, but throughout the entire game our kids never gave up.” The Bearcats lose only four seniors off the roster for next season, which figures to be more successful considering a year of experience under the belts of the younger players. “We are loaded with underclassmen,” Lechuga said. “We’ll have a really good squad coming back next year. It’s just a matter of the boys dedicating themselves 100 percent to the program and the rest will take care of itself.” The Panthers finished the regular season undefeated and will start their quest for a state championship following a welcomed bye this week. “There’s a reason why you try to earn one of the top-four spots in the playoffs,” Palmer said. “We only have 17 kids on the team, so the fewer games we have to play the better it’s going to be for us as far as staying healthy and fresh.” Superior will await the winner between No. 10 Mogollon and No. 7 Joseph City. “The extra week off also gives us a little extra time to prepare for our next opponent, and hopefully allows us make a deep run in these playoffs,” Palmer added. Coaches like to see their teams playing their best as the playoffs begin. Does Palmer like where his team is at this point of the season? “We need to clean some things up,” he responded. “Two big things that have hurt us the last two weeks have been poor blocking and tackling.”

There will be a Poker Run, a Poker Walk, raffles all day long, hot dog eating contest and the ever famous pie eating contest which last year was more fun for the adults than the youth. Another work session will take place in December, and a stronger outline for a plan is expected to emerge. On another subject, I have been asked several times when the town will have its election. I’m not surprised with the question, for we used to have a separate time for electing local offices. The State of Arizona changed all that. Town positions are now at the same time (and on the same ballot) as state and federal elections. In other words, Debbie and Sam are on the same ballot as Donald and Hillary… only way down at the bottom! The early ballots are now open, and Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8. Be sure to exercise your privilege.

Finally, take time this weekend to visit the Farmer’s Market sponsored by the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce. It’s this Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. on the
