BoardPolicyCW(Local)TheBoardbelievesnamingschoolfacilitiesisamatterofgreatimportance.Inselectinganame,theBoardmaygivepreferencetopeoplewhohavemadesignificantcontributionstoeducation.

Further,theBoardwillnotbeinfluencedinitsdecisionbypersonalprejudiceorfavoritism,politicalpressure,ortemporarypopularityinchoosinganame.

Whenaschoolfacilityistobenamed,theSuperintendentmaysolicitnamesfromstaff,students,andcommunity,whendeemedadvisablebytheBoard.Atimetableshallbeestablishedbeforenaminganyfacility.

Inselectingnames,specialconsiderationmaybegiventothosenamesthatwillhaveaspecialmeaningtoallstudentsandcitizens,andwillenhancetheeducationalphilosophyoftheDistrict.

InthenamingorrenamingofaDistrictfacilityafteraDistrictemployeeorelectedofficial,thereshallbeaone-yearwaitingperiodfromthetimeofresignationorretirementbeforetheBoardmayconsidersucharequest.InthenamingofschoolbuildingsorotherfacilitiesintheDistrict,thefollowingguidelinesshallbeused:

1.FacilitiesmaybenamedforanylivingordeceasedpersonswhohaveservedtheDistrictorthecommunity.2.Facilitiesmaybenamedforanylocal,state,ornationalheroicfigure.3.Facilitiesmaybenamedforanylocal,state,ornationalgeographicarea.4.FacilitiesmaybenamedforanysymboloftheStateofTexas.

Background:CMSSouth:ThenewmiddleschoolisinthesouthernportionofCoppellISD.CMSWest hasbeenthenameofthecurrentcampusforthepast25years,andthecommitteefeltithasanexistingbrandandnamerecognitionwithintheDistrict.Italsoisnotuncommonforafacilitytoretainitsnamewhenrelocated.

Background: ThecommitteewasveryrespectfulofpreservingthehistoryofCoppellHighSchoolforfuturegenerationsandkeepingthetwocampusesunified.Withthatinmind,thecommitteefeltstronglythatthewords“CoppellHighSchool“shouldbeincludedinthenewname,asthenewfacilitywillbeanextensionoftheCoppellHighSchoolcampus.KeepingCoppellHighSchoolinthenamealsowouldassistwithbrandingandfosteringunitybetweenthetwocampuses.
