The world's leading glassware manufacturer - Lui-gi Bormioli - was founded in 1946 and was ledto international prominence by Mr. Luigi Bormi-
oli. Located in the region of Parma, northern Italy, halfwaybetween Bologna and Milan, the company and theBormioli family continue to follow the founder’s mis-sion: a commitment to great design, traditional Ital-ian craftsmanship and new-age glassmaking techno-logy to create beautiful glassware of the highest qua-
lity. Luigi Bormioli rivals fine crystal in appearanceand elegance, but is affordably priced and widelyavailable.
As Italian glassmakers go, Luigi Bormioli is rela-tively young, but the company’s devotion to design aes-thetics and glass craftsmanship are rooted in Italian glass-making methods that have flourished on the Venetian island ofMurano since the Middle Ages. While Venice symbolizes glassartistry of the highest order, the lasting contribution of Muranoglassmakers was the creation of a clear, brilliant glass calledcristallo. In time, their once-secret processes spread across
Italy and eventually to all of Europe.Luigi Bormioli brand glassware, all lead-free, can be found in most
major retail stores across the US as well as in Canada. From thebeginning of the company, to the present, Luigi Bormioli has been com-
mitted to the purest sands, potash and other materials used in the manu-facture of high-quality glass.
Most of the company’s glassware is made at the Luigi Bormi-oli glassworks in Parma, while some items are manufac-tured by skilled artisans in glassworks in Germany, Turkeyand China.
In order to produce glass of the highest quality, the com-pany prefers to manufacture its products from thepurest of materials and not recycled glass, but also has certain collections that are madefrom recycled product.

HNGDECLINE IN PROFIT; SALES TOINCREASE
Hindusthan National Glass & Industries (HNG)posted a 4.8% decrease in net profit at INR 31.4
crore for the quarter ended 31 December 2010 comparedto the same period last fiscal. The glass manufacturer,based in Kolkata, and part of the Somany Group, had anet profit of INR 33 crore in the same quarter of 2009.During the quarter, company net sales were up 14% toINR 399 crore compared to INR 351 crore in the corre-sponding period of the previous year.
“The sector has been affected by the increase in ener-gy cost and packaging materials. Another price increase isexpected to be in place with effect from February, 2011,”HNG CFO Laxmi Narayan Mandhana said.
The firm is also looking at expanding its productioncapacity to meet the growing demands of glasses. “We plan to double our existing capacity of 2,825 tonnesper day (TPD) to 5,975 TDP in the next three yearsthrough both greenfield and brownfield expansions, inorder to meet this demand,” Mandhana said, adding thatthe demand for container glass is growing at a steady10-12%.
WORK STARTS ON ANDHRAPRADESH GLASS MANUFACTURINGCOMPLEX
HNG has commenced construction of the firstphase of what it claims is the largest glass manu-facturing complex in Southeast Asia at Naidupetain Andhra Pradesh.
The INR 700 crore greenfield complex is statedto be the first step towards realizing HNG’s moveto double its capacity in the next three years. Thecompany is investing almost INR 250 crore for thebest technology to meet global quality standards.
Occupying 210 acres, the new complex willhouse the largest furnace in India, with a capacityof 650 tonnes per day (tpd). On completion, the3,500-tpd facility will have three containers andtwo float glass plants, and is expected to generateemployment for over 2,000 people.
Located at the crossroads of Chennai,Venkatagiri, Nellore and Tirupati on NH5, thecomplex, which will also include a colony toaccommodate over 600 families, is close to theports of Ennore and Krishnapatnam, making itsuited for both imports and exports. HNG, whichhas a combined capacity of 2,825 tpd, aims to cap-ture the market demands from West Asia,
Southeast Asia, the US and Europe.
ACQUISITIONSHNG is said to be in advanced talks to acquire two
companies in Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia and MENA(Middle East and North Africa) regions. The companywill pay from INR 500 crore and INR 600 crore for theseacquisitions.
“We have identified three areas for investment in glo-bal container glass manufacturing. The investment wouldentail around INR 200-500 crore per company, but thetotal outflow would depend on what amount of debt wetake on the book,” said Mukul Somany, vice-chairmanand managing director.
Funds for the acquisitions will come from variousoptions. HNG is thinking about encashing about 17% ofits treasury stock - created in 2002, when it merged withthe Indian operations of Owens Brockway - retrievingabout INR 400-500 crore. It also has a strong balancesheet, with a debt equity ratio of only 0.35:1, enabling itto raise debt comfortably. Its current cash pile is present-ly about INR 90 crore. HNG is said to be conducting duediligence on these deals and an announcement is expect-ed in the next three-four weeks.
With regards to the domestic front, the company haslined up a capex (Capital Expenditure) of INR 2,500crore in the next three years.
SODA ASH
BELARUSCHINESE INVESTOR
TO FINANCE CONSTRUCTION OF SODA ASH PLANT
A Chinese investor will reportedly take part in the con-struction of the soda ash plant in Gomel Oblast. The
Construction and Architecture Ministry of Belarus and aChinese company have already signed an investment agree-ment, Anatoly Lis, Deputy Natural Resources andEnvironmental Protection Minister, said.
“We have started developing the deposit. It has beenexplored already,” Lis added.
The plant, which will have the capacity of 280,000 tonnes ofsoda ash per year, will produce soda ash for glass, chemical andother industries. The plant will sell its products domestically tosatisfy domestic demand, which stands at about 120,000 tonnesof soda ash per year, as well as internationally.
The plant will be built in Mozyr District where the biggestdeposits of rock salt, used in the production of soda ash, are located.

ZIGNAGO VETROACQUISITION OF POLISHGLASS CONTAINER MANUFACTURER
The purchase agreement for the acqui-sition of around 79% of the share cap-
ital of Huta Szkla Czechy (HSC) by ZignagoVetro Group was carried out on 3 March2011 for a total price of slightly less than EUR7 million. HSC has a registered office andmanufacturing plant in Trabki, not far fromWarsaw, Polamd.
In 2010 the company, which has over 300employees, generated revenues of approxi-mately EUR 14 million, an increase of almost30% compared to 2009, with an EBITDA mar-gin of approximately 11%. The net financialdebt of the company is around EUR 8,000.
HSC operates in niches of the global marketof glass containers for cosmetics and per-fumery, and also for food and beverages.
The company, which is located in a strate-gic geographical area, both because of thepotentiality for growth of the Polish market,and because of its location, supplies a widerange of personalized products.
Franco Grisan, President and managingdirector of Zignago Vetro and new Presidentof HSC stated: “This transaction announcedtoday is fully consistent with the ZignagoVetro’s strategy, which aims to grow and strengthen both organically and byacquisition and to increase its flexibility witha view of broadening its offer and its refer-ence markets.”
“Receiving the parent company’s know-how will permit a comfortable and profitabledevelopment for HSC and will allow ZignagoVetro to expand its own production process byintegrating manufacturing processes that arecurrently not being performed.”
“These new synergies between companiesof the Group and the direct presence in mar-kets that are very interesting for us, willincrease the value of our company.”
The companies of the Zignago Vetro Groupmanufacture high-quality glass containers forfoods and beverages, and for cosmetics andperfumery, as well as speciality glass bottlesfor the wine and spirits market, for both thedomestic and international market.
RECYCLING
FEVEGLASS RECYCLING INCREASES
AGAIN IN EUROPEAccording to the latest glass recycling estimates – pub-lished one year ahead of the official Eurostat data – more
than 67% of glass bottles and jars were collected for recycling inthe European Union in 2009. The figures released by FEVE, theEU Container Glass Federation, translate into about 11 milliontonnes or 25 billion glass bottles and jars being collectedthroughout the European Union, confirming the steady and posi-tive trend of the last years (66% in 2008).
“Glass recycling increases each year thanks to the commit-ment of consumers everywhere. Our industry is able to turn thiswaste into a valuable resource to make new bottles and jarsbecause glass by nature is 100% recycleable,” says Niall Wall,President of FEVE.
Recycling glass avoids the use of virgin raw materials, reducesenergy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Glass recy-cling contributes to creating and securing economic growth andlocal employment in Europe because glass is locally collected,locally recycled and locally produced.
The act of recycling means that glass producers can make useof the same materials over and over again. This characteristic ofglass puts the material at the centre stage in the ambitious strate-gy of the European Commission to make the European Union a‘circular economy’ where recycling is the key factor to wastereduction and where waste is considered as a valuable resource.
“I believe strongly in moves to make Europe more resourceefficient,” comments Linda McAvan – Member of the EuropeanParliament for Yorkshire and the Humber. “EU Directives set outa requirement to increase recycling rates as they will help toreduce demand for primary raw materials, to reuse valuablematerials which would otherwise end up as waste, and to reduceenergy consumption. This is fundamental to build a solidresource efficient economy.”
These goals can be met only where materials can be reusedin valuable schemes or can be actually recycled in closed loopsystems - like the glass bottle ones – which are gold standardsin the matter. Materials that are down cycled for another usethan for the original one are ejected from the closed loop sys-tem and are often ultimately generating waste destined forincineration or landfill.
Hence the importance of reviewing and improving best prac-tices in collection and treatment of key waste streams as recentlyannounced by the European Commission in their coming reviewof the ‘Thematic Strategy on waste prevention and recycling’foreseen in 2012 which they hope will help Europe achieve thelong-term goal of a recycling society.

consolidated net profit of INR 164.6 crore for thequarter ended December 2010, a 22.5% decreasecompared with INR 212.4 crore in the same periodof the previous year. According to company officials, even if domes-tic demand for Tata Chemical’s main products, sodaash and sodium bicarbonate, increased 5% and 9%respectively, rising input (coal, coke and limestone)costs continue to exert pressure on the performanceof the company.
“We continue to see pressures of increasing inputprices. The unfortunate weather events in Australiaand Indonesia will put even greater pressure onenergy prices. We are working towards priceincreases to negate this impact,” said TataChemicals managing director R. Mukundan.
The company intends to spend over USD 100 mil-lion (INR 450 crore) to expand its soda ash manufac-turing capacity by four lakh tonnes, officials said.

PRN PRICESQUADRUPLE
The adverse weath-er conditions in
December 2010, along witha fraud investigation atNationwide Recycling - amajor glass reprocessor inWales - have led to UKpackaging recovery note(PRN) prices quadruplingin a month.
Figures from TheEnvironment Exchangeshow that PRNs for glasswere trading at over GBP40 per tonne – up from justGBP 8.50 in December.
Nationwide Recyclingwas suspended from issuingPRNs by the EnvironmentAgency in December afteran investigation lasting a
year by the EA into fraud,illegal waste activities andmoney laundering at itsplant near Swansea.
The suspension led tocontracts being broken anda severe supply shortagefor PRNs, Ian Andrews,senior market operator at The EnvironmentExchange said: “InDecember, adverse weath-er conditions hindered thecollection of glass recy-clate, which in turnreduced the generation ofPRNs. The suspension ofthe reprocessor meant thatcontracts were broken andbuyers had to find PRNselsewhere, creating addi-tional demand and a senseof panic among buyers.”
Environment Exchangemanaging director AngusMcPherson added that “acertain element” of panicamong buyers had made the
glass market “look more outof kilter than it really is”.
Gareth Goodall, directorof markets at PRN tradingplatform Scrap-ex, said thatthe issues at Nationwideand with the snow werebehind the spike but playeddown the long-term effect.
“I think this just showsthat PRN prices can go upas well as down althoughwe didn’t see much of thatin 2010,” he said.
“On our forward marketswe have selling interestaround the GBP 15 level forglass PRNs, which is uparound GBP 2.50 over thelast week or so.
“We have also seen afirming up of prices onother PRN classes on thescrap-ex forward markets.Most of the interest now ison the forwards, not the2010 – other than theglass.”

MARKETSTRATEGIC
BUSINESS REPORTThe most recent research reportreleased by Global Industry AnalystsInc.: “Soda Ash: A Global StrategicBusiness Report”, provides a com-prehensive review of the soda ashmarkets, recession trends, currentmarket trends, competitive scenario,key growth drivers, productoverview, recent industry activity,and profiles of major/niche globaland regional market participants.
The report gives annual sales esti-mates and projections for the sodaash market from 2007 to 2015 for thefollowing geographic markets: US,Canada, Japan, Europe, Asia-Pacific,Latin America, and Rest of World.Key end-use segments analyzedinclude glass (container glass, flatglass, fiberglass, and other glass),chemicals, soaps & detergents, pulp& paper, fluegas desulphurization,water treatment and miscellaneous.A seven-year (2000-2006) historicanalysis is also provided for addi-tional perspective.
The global economic crisis of2008 and 2009 had a negative
impact on the worldwide soda ashmarket, as the market is stronglydependant on gross domestic prod-uct growth rates, with a significantdrop in demand across various end-use segments, including glass andchemicals. This decrease was morepronounced in matured markets,with some relief coming fromdeveloping markets such as Chinaand India.
According to the report, Asia-Pacific is the largest and fastestgrowing regional market for sodaash worldwide, and, lifted by thelarge-scale production of glass incountries such as China and India, isexpected to retain its dominance inthe global soda ash market.
Consumption of soda ash in Asia-Pacific is expected to grow at a com-pounded annual rate of 3.6% from2007 to 2015, with Europe and theUS being the other leading marketsfor soda ash.
Glass is both the largest andfastest growing end-use segment ofsoda ash in the world. Boasting aCAGR (compound annual growthrate) of 2.3% in the 2007-2015 peri-od, consumption of soda ash in theglass end-use segment is expected toremain strong in the near future,pushed by increasing production ofcontainer glass, flat glass and otherforms of glass in China, India, andother low-cost production areas. The
chemicals segment is the secondlargest end-user of soda ash.
As prices of raw materials contin-ue to affect synthetic soda ash manu-facturers, profitability of naturalsoda ash producers has been effectedby freight charges: 20-25% of theprice of natural soda ash exportedfrom the US to Europe and Asia isfor deep shipping costs. Productionof soda ash from natural deposits isinfluenced strongly by increasingcost pressures.
Economic growth in China andother developing countries is causingan increase in demand for raw mate-rials. Increased shipping prices havebeen caused by the greater iron oreimports raking up a major part ofglobal shipping fleet, and, theseincreases in shipping prices, is there-fore expected to further raise pricesof the US soda ash exports.
Major players profiled in thereport include Brunner Mond Group,Ciech Chemical Group, FMCCorporation, General ChemicalIndustrial Products Inc., GHCL Ltd.,Hubei Shuanghuan ChemicalGroup, Joint Stock Company“Soda”, Nirma Ltd., OCI ChemicalCorporation, Penrice Soda HoldingsLtd., Searles Valley Minerals,Shandong Haihua Group Co. ZIMGLASSMARCH RE-OPENING FAILS
Zimglass employees were left disappointedwhen the Gweru based glass manufacturing com-
pany failed to re-open as scheduled. The company closedin August 2010, with about 472 workers placed on com-pulsory leave receiving an allowance. According to themanagement, the company was closing to allow for there-building of the only remaining furnace that was opera-tional at the company. The other furnace was last used in2002 and needed between USD 10-19million for re-con-struction. The company said financial problems andbelow capacity production had hindered them from re-building both furnaces.
Managing director of Zimglass, Jacob Dube, con-firmed that the company had not managed to meet itsMarch deadline. “We have not reopened because we havehad delays in the establishment of the letter of credit andthis cause delays in receiving the equipment fromEurope.” Dube said they now estimated that operationswould begin 1 of July.
“We have agreed in the works council that we extend theshutdown to June. We should resume operations in Julyand a local bank has already paid a deposit for the equip-ment from Italy. They have shown commitment to sourcingfunds. As of now we have extended the unpaid leave andwe will be notifying our employees,” Dube said.
Zimglass has sourced equipment from Italian BDFIndustries S.p.A. estimated to cost about USD 4 million.The supply includes the design and supply of glass con-tact refractories materials and design and supply of fore-hearth refractories for the existing remaining electric fur-nace, along with a new 8-section production line, com-plete from servo feeder to stacker.
Despite the fact that works council agreed on theextension of paid leave, workers who had reported forduty described the allowances they are currently receiv-ing as peanuts, despite a review to between USD 60-85.
“We have really suffered as Zimglass workers and wewere hoping that we would start working March. We areso dismayed to hear that the leave will be extended toJune. How are we going to go through another fourmonths again without salaries when we have families tolook after? We had asked our workers representatives toat least negotiate that we get half salaries, but we weretold the company said they could not afford it,” said oneworker. He said the allowances they were receiving werenot paid on time. “Sometimes it comes three months lateyet we have families to look after,” said the worker.
Another worker said it did not make sense to close theonly glass manufacturer in the country. “Zimglass wasonce one of the companies that most people wanted towork for. Now it has been run down.” The worker said the
decision to force workers to go on compulsory forcedleave was drastic as families of the workers were now liv-ing in abject poverty. Some workers have taken upemployment as gardeners and other menial jobs whilewaiting for the company to re-open.”

RIGINS ANDDEVELOPMENT
From the verybeginning in 1990,
S.I.G.MA. has seriously pursed theaim of cooperating with the glassindustry offering top quality mate-rials thanks to the hard work of ateam of people with more than 30years of experience in the produc-tion of refractories. Thanks to con-tinuous improvements in the per-formances of materials, in just afew years, S.I.G.MA. has become aleader in Italy in the refractory mar-ket for the glass industry.
At the end of the 1990s,S.I.G.MA. turned its attention tothe international market and rapidlyexpanded notwithstanding thestrong competition.
Today, more than 80 per cent ofS.I.G.MA.’s products are sold inter-nationally.
Thanks to cooperation withimportant partners, S.I.G.MA. cansupply a complete high qualityrange of products for the glassindustry including:• fireclay;• high alumina;• sillimanite;• mullite;• silica;• zircon-mullite;• zircon;• magnesia;• fused cast refractories;• insulating refractories;• special cements and concretes.
INVESTMENTSIn 2011, S.I.G.MA. will invest in
a very high temperature kiln(1750°C) from Bickley. This newkiln, the eighth at the plant, willimprove the quality level of someexisting products, as well as sinter
highly refractory products toimprove performances and opera-tion life.
This is only the latest investmentof our company that has greatlyimproved production capacity andquality level in these last yearsdespite the global crisis.
Investments at the plant in 2009and 2010 include:• raw material weighing equip-
ment;• 200-square-metre pre-assembly
area;• new oil pressure press (two
presses in total); and• new laser control grinding
machine dedicated to furnacebottom blocks, channels andforehearth superstructures (twogrinding machines in total).S.I.G.MA.’s laboratory also has
some very important new equip-ment, in particular an X-ray difrac-

tometer and an X-ray fluorescencespectrometer. These two machinesenable to check refractories in acomplete way, carrying outresearch to improve per-formances and developnew products.
PRODUCTIONSTRENGTHS
S.I.G.MA. is specializedin manufacturing forehearthand feeder refractories.
Thanks to special alcoholicbinder technology, S.I.G.MA. pro-duces both complete forehearths(superstructures and channels) andexpendables with very low glassyphase quantity, thus improvingchemical–physical characteristicsand service life.
The use of an alcoholic binderavoids the presence of clay in therefractories, thus eliminating alka-lies (Na2O, K2O) responsible forthe glassy phase.
Clay, when used as a binder,actually brings alkalis and impuri-ties, increasing the volume of theglassy phase, which is the weakestarea of the refractory.
The reason of the strong corro-sion of a refractory with highglassy phase content is due to thealkalis that, infiltrating into therefractory during operation, reactin particular with the glassy phasereducing its viscosity.
The consequence is both achemical reaction between thisfluid amorphous phase and therefractory and also an exudation ofthe glassy phase that carries awayrefractory grains weakening theblocks and giving defects to theglass. S.I.G.MA. refractories,manufactured with an alcoholicbinder and not with clay, have acrystalline structure and very lowglassy phase content.
A low glassy phase means:1. higher ‘refractoriness under
load’ and higher ‘creep’;2. better glass corrosion resistance;3. better vapour corrosion resis-
tance;
4. better thermal shock resistance.Thus better performance for:
• forehearth superstructures (seepoints 1 and 3);
• channels (see point 2);• expendables (see points 2 and 4).
SPECIAL REFRACTORIES FORFOREHEARTHS AND FEEDERS
By combining its technicalknowledge in refractory productswith its engineers’ direct experi-ence in the glass industry,S.I.G.MA. has developed twonewly designed products aimed atimproving glass corrosion resis-tance and thermal homogeneity ofthe glass gob.
High alumina product (Trademark A 95 V)
A 95 V high alumina is mainlyused for forehearth channels. Thisquality product has very good prop-erties in hot conditions such as vol-ume stability,refractoriness, aswell as good glasscorrosion resistanceup 1,270°C, and isconsidered the bestchoice when there isthe risk of zircondefects (cat-stretches).
A special formingprocess is necessary toobtain a 98-99 per centAl2O3 product withvery low glassy phasecontent. This is a vibro-
cast manufacturing processwhere no clay is used as a binder,
and, therefore, avoiding meltingagents such as sodium and potassi-um (as well as impurities), whichincrease the quantity of glassyphase and weaken the refractoryproducts.
The result is a crystalline struc-ture with higher glass corrosionresistance.
The use of sintered high aluminachannels for forehearths, instead offused cast products, is possible onlyif the temperature does not exceed1,270°C and if the refractory chan-nels have the right crystalline struc-ture (α Al2O3) with a low glassyphase content.
The strengths of S.I.G.MA. highquality alumina A 95 V for chan-nels are:• no clay as a binder;• very pure raw materials (synthe-
tic and fused);• low glassy phase;• crystalline structure;• strong glass corrosion resistance
up to 1,270°C.

S.I.G.MA.’s patented tubes
99% alumina material
SIGMA art 1-04-2011 15:43 Pagina 40
Patented tube (Trademark ZM 7-32 KV)
The tube is the most stressedrefractory piece in the feeder asthere are three zones along the tube
with three completely differentworking conditions:1. the lower part is immersed
in the fused glass;2. the central part is surrounded by
flames; and3. the upper part is relatively
cold.All this means a strong
thermal shock and, further-more, the tube acts as a barri-er and causes a temperaturedifference between the glassinside and outside the tube.
In particular, the tradition-al type of tube has a differ-ence in temperature mea-sured from 40 to 100°Caccording to the type of glassbeing produced.
S.I.G.MA. has developed atube with a new geometry tosolve the problems of thermalshock and improve gob homo-geneity.
The new concept tube isgrooved along its length andincorporates specially config-ured holes made by moulds,thus avoiding stresses nor-
mally associated with drilled holes.This special shape and the
decrease of mass increase the heattransmission from the outside to theinside of the tube, thus improvingthe glass homogeneity and lower-ing the number of rejected glassarticles.
In short, two major benefits areachieved:• thermal shocking of the tube is
greatly reduced.• gob thermal homogeneity is
greatly improved. ■

Today, Moores enjoys a reputa-tion for making products which areunique for their quality and perfor-mance. Specializing in many differ-ent products used in a variety ofapplications, it is the quality that thecompany provides that has put it inthe forefront of the glass industry.Moores works with companies allover the world and many of its com-ponents are custom made. The com-pany responds quickly and competi-tively to clients’ needs, which is fun-damental to its success.
Moores Glassworks has a num-ber of different departments, ran-ging from its highly skilled teamof specialist glassblowers tomachines department. Productsare manufactured as per clientrequirements before passingthrough the company’s inspectiondepartment. This is a very impor-tant stage in ensuring maximumquality but also finding and pre-venting problems in the future.
Machines departmentMoores machines department is
fast becoming a more and moreimportant part of the company. Theprice of raw materials is continu-ously rising and clients are strivingto keep costs as low as possible. Tokeep its place at the forefront of theglass industry, Moores has investedin ways to remain extremely com-petitive, whilst maintaining andimproving quality. In 2004, MooresGlassworks acquired SademsIndustrie, a Belgium-based manu-facturer of glass products anddeveloper of computer-controlledglass processes. Glass or quartzparts are fabricated using thermo-graphic and dimensionally con-trolled automated lathes.
Auto lathesAuto lathes can be programmed
to perform the work of highly skilledcraftsmen, which is especiallyadvantageous when manufacturingwith high yields, as it allows for con-sistency and repeatability of qualitywhilst decreasing labour costs.
These thermographically con-trolled lathes are fully automatedto produce a wide variety of glassand quartz products by hot-form-ing operations. From tubes or rods,these machines can shape usingany combination of forming, push-ing, pulling, blowing, sealing, col-lapsing or centrifugal operations,providing high-dimensional accu-racy. Programming the equipmentis quick, simple and user-friendly,and the systems are flexible. Since no mechanical setup isrequired, it takes just a few min-utes to switch from one productionto another, making the equipmentcost-efficient even for small pro-duction batches.
Sadems has developed a uniqueprogramming tool: remote control.Using joysticks, potentiometers andother controls, a glassblower canproduce a reference piece on anautomatic machine. During thisoperation, called acquisition, themachine records all actions madeby the glassblower, as well as ther-mographic and dimensional maps.
The software analyzes all theinformation recorded during theacquisition, finds correlationsbetween the actions made by theglassblower and the thermographicand dimensional information thenautomatically generates a produc-tion programme. Corrections canbe made directly in the program toimprove the quality or the produc-tion speed.
As a glassblower works on amanual lathe, he is actually work-ing in closed loop. He carries out anoperation, looks at the effect of thisoperation on the glass and conse-quently decides about his nextaction. The effect analyzed can belinked to the viscosity of the glassor its shape. This method allows theglassblower to adapt to variationsin his working environment(dimensions of tubing, flamepower) in order to produce thesame final result from variousworking conditions.

trolled lathes are roughly work-ing on the same principle. Theembedded thermographic cameracontinuously measures the temper-ature profile and the dimensions ofthe working glass at locationsdefined by the program and adaptthe programmed actions accordingto the result of these measurements.Taking into account that themachine is able to perform thesemeasurements with a far greateraccuracy than a glass blower, thefinal result is also more accurateand repetitive, with tolerances up to±0.05 millimetres.
AccessoriesMoores auto lathes come with
various accessories. In some appli-cations, mainly pieces shaped at theend of the tube (such as threads,joins, flanges,…), the processrequires that the tube is shaped bothoutside and inside. The outsideforming can be performed by using
the revolving external forming toolholder, which is a standardequipement of the termographiccontrolled lathe. The inside form-ing, on the other hand, requires aspecial ‘tool’, named ‘internalforming tool holder’.
This accessory can be veryquickly mounted in replacement ofthe right chuck. The holder fits anyforming tool with an axis of 15 mil-limetres. It rotates freely on water-cooled bearing and can move bothhorizontally (to penetrate inside thetube) and vertically (to adjust inte-nal diameter).
From now on, there is no need tochoose between a ‘one-head form-ing machine’ and a ‘two-headmachine’. This accessory makesthe thermographic controlled latheeven more universal. To cover anextensive range of applications, theunit can be equipped with a motor-ized NC rotation axis (case of innerthreads) and with an edge formingtool carrier.
Some clients prefer not to pur-
chase the lathes themselves butsubcontract instead. Thanks to thehigh-tech equipment used, Mooresis able to produce, on a custombasis, a very wide range of glassand quartz components.
The products manufactured atMoores Glassworks cover a widerange of medical, military and com-mercial applications. Specialists inVacuum Viewports, Glass to MetalSeals, Stems/Pinches, Graded Sealsand Hollow Cathode Lamp Bodies,Moores Glassworks is assisting andsupplying clients in the UnitedKingdom, Europe and the rest ofthe world. ■

RECENT INNOVATIONSFlat Burners
A new patented product fromF.I.R.E. is the company’s FlatBurners. These burners ensurelower NOx emissions, improvedradiation over glass and lower fuelconsumption.
F.I.R.E. SHP forehearthThe SHP forehearth (Patent no.
WO 2010/015964 A2) is able toguarantee a minimum of 98 percent (soda lime coloured glass) ofthermal homogeneity at the triplethermocouple near the spout.
InnovationsThis result is achieved by intro-
ducing a combination of innovativedesigns in the superstructure, whichconsists of the following three mainfeatures:1. alternative superstructure shape,
which enables the separation ofthe flue gas zones (at the side)from the cooling zone (in thecentre);
2. hollow superstructure with inte-grated flue gas ducts;
3. Venturi system which extract theflue gas in proportion to the cen-tral cooling air pressure.
Being a specialistdoes not alwaysmean that acompany canprovide its clientswith all themachinery andequipment theyneed. But being ableto supply fromdesign to installation,start-up and more,can make thedifference in thehighly competitivesector of hollow glassmanufacturing.

The hollow superstructureThe innovation is based on a new
physical cooling process.Flue gas flows inside the super-
structure, keeping the side of theforehearth hot.
The cooling air extracts the fluegas with a special Venturi device.
When more cooling is required,the flue gas is extracted more rapid-ly in order to exchange less energywith the refractory. This process isself regulating.
Benefits of the Venturi systemThermal performance
SHP forehearths have proved thefollowing performance in practice:- 98 per cent thermal homogeneity
on coloured glass (compared tothe average 94 per cent with thebest western European fur-naces);
- 99 per cent thermal homogeneityon white glass (compared to theaverage 97 per cent with the bestwestern European furnaces).
Forehearth length reductionDue to the physical process
described above, the SHP forehearthneeds less insulation to obtain thesame homogeneity. SHPs are there-fore very efficient and can beinstalled on furnaces where morethrough-put is needed but the gobpoints should not be moved becauseof the cold-end layout.

Easy maintenanceDue to the
three-block assembly sys-tem, the client receives spare partsafter installation. In the unlikelyevent of superstructure failure, theblocks can easily be replaced (thetime required is similar to when thespout is changed).
Easy online monitoring (optional)A unique software has been
developed to allow the operator tosee the performance. At any givenmoment the operator is able to visu-alize a thermal map at the triplethermocouple as well as to monitorthe temperature distribution at eachpoint of the section.
SHP - key characteristics- Top thermal performance (mini-
mum of 98 per cent of thermalhomogeneity guaranteed)
- Shorter layout without compro-mising through-put (reduction of6’ of total forehearth length com-pared with a K36”, 100 t.p.d.standard forehearth)
- Less fuel consumption (reduc-tion of nine per cent of methaneconsumption compared with a K36”, 100 t.p.d. standard fore-hearth)
- Easy to assemble- Easy to repair- Easy to control with increased
efficiency and self regulatingcooling process
- Easy to monitor due to F.I.R.E.unique visual software. ■

Consumption ReductionDue to the innovative superstruc-
ture, SHP forehearths can achieveefficient cooling without compro-mising thermal homogeneity, there-fore reducing fuel consumption.
As an example, a 24’ K36” SHPforehearth can save nine per cent ofmethane when compared with astandard forehearth at the followingrunning conditions: sodalimecoloured glass, pull 100 t.p.d., inlettemperature 1,200°C, gob tempera-ture 1,100°C.
Reduction of building time and costs
SHP Forehearths can save up toseven days of building work andtherefore production when com-pared with other standard fore-hearths.
SHP Forehearths are easy toinstall and require less people tobuild. They are composed of onlythree different superstructure shapeswhich can be quickly and easilyassembled. The installation is sim-ple without the need for many com-plementary parts currently used onstandard HP forehearths (C shapes,L shapes, triangles, rectangles,shaped superstructure blocs, etc.).

IMPROVING TAKE OUT ARMPERFORMANCE
IS machines rely on take outarms to efficiently and accuratelytransfer hollow glassware from themould to the dead plate. Whenfunctioning properly, the take outarm is synchronized with blowmoulds and glassware is uniformlyspaced on the conveyor. As produc-tion rates and line speeds increase,the proper functioning of the takeout arm becomes especially critical.A common problem with belt dri-ven take out arms is the loss of syn-

chronization due to belt slip or fail-ure. This results in irregular productspacing, increased breakage,decreased throughput, andincreased maintenance downtime.
Working jointly with glassindustry engineers, RamseyProducts has developed a newsolution that greatly extends thelife of take out arm drives.Utilizing high performance RPVsilent chain in place of heat sensi-tive drive belts, Ramsey’s take outarm drives can provide more than10 times the life of a typical beltdriven arm. And because Ramseydrives are made from hardenedsteel components, stretch is elimi-nated and precision registration is
maintained throughout the life of adrive. The bottom line is a solutionthat provides years of trouble freeservice compared to only weeks ormonths. Downtime and mainte-nance costs are reduced, whileproduction output is increased.
Ramsey take out arms … take outdowntime
Ramsey take out arm drives areavailable in component kits forretrofitting in existing take out armhousings, or as a complete newassembly. Both kits and completetake out arms utilize high perfor-mance RPV silent chain andsprockets to greatly extend drivelife and dramatically reduce main-
tenance costs. Field tests haveshown that Ramsey take out armdrive life is often more than 10times that provided by drivesusing heat sensitive belts.Moreover, with Ramsey take outarm drives, the need for frequent
adjustment is virtually eliminated.Drives can be equipped withoptional shear pin sprockets to pro-vide overload protection, and allRamsey take out arms are dynami-cally tested prior to shipment.
Features:• fully compatible with most IS
machines;• greatly improved drive life;• reduced downtime and mainte-
nance;• complete drive or retrofit kits
available;• suitable for 4.25” to 9.25” bottle
spacing;• built-in overload protection
option;• fully tested before shipment.
Take out arm retrofit kits save money
Ramsey retrofit kits allow takeout arms from other manufacturersto be converted to RPV silent chaindrives. Kits provide all the internalcomponents necessary to convertan existing take out arm to aRamsey chain driven take arm. Thekit is installed in an existing takeout arm housing, so there is no needto buy a new housing. This pro-vides an economical alternative forcustomers who wish to improve theperformance of existing take outarms, rather than purchasing a com-plete new drive unit. Kits are avail-able to convert take out arms frommost major manufacturers.
Complete take out arms fit most IS machines
Ramsey take out arm systemsare complete drive solutions. Theyare designed to completely replacealternative take out arms, and areshipped ready for use in their owndrive housing. Because they aredesigned specifically for use with

high performance RPV chain andsprockets, Ramsey take out armsystems are often more compactthan take out arms from other man-ufacturers.
Payback time measured in monthsTake out arm malfunction, or
failure, leads to costly downtime,product loss, and maintenance.Because Ramsey drives provideextended, maintenance free drivelife, all these costs are greatlyreduced. In many cases, take outarms retrofitted with Ramsey drives produce a positive return on investment in only a fewmonths. With this kind of results,it is often easy to justify upgradingexisting drives.

COMPANY UPDATE
When Luben Srl (now known as Luben Glass)was set up in 1984, its main activities were thedistribution of chemical products to glass-works. Today, after almost 30 years, the com-pany founder, Francesco Moschini, a true gen-tleman with a extraordinary dynamism, wouldbe extremely satisfied to see how the companyhas grown over this recent period.Coming from the chemical sector, Franco (thename used by family, friends and those whoknew him well) started in the container glasssector as an agent for the commercialization oflubricants for moulds. And thanks to strong spir-it of enterprise he established, together with hiswife, Luben Srl. In just a few years, and main-taining its modest size, the company was ableto create a name for itself in the national market.The friendliness, competence and youthful spir-it of Franco made Luben become, over the years, a reference point for the numer-ous clients who were constantly looking for solutions to their problems. Over the years, Moschini expanded the company’s range of product for glass-works, starting to commercialize spare parts for IS forming machines. He wasalways ready to joke with his clients, often saying:” No problem, I can sell youthis, that and the other as well!”The spirit of enterprise, continuously on the move and always ready to joke,enabled Franco to develop new products and to look for new markets, consider-ably increasing the turnover of Luben Glass.An active sportsman, Moschini spent his free time running; which was probably the only thing that really tired him, but which also made him feel ener-getic and, along with the company of young people, animated by the desire ofhealthy competition. At work, he was able to transmit his enthusiasm and vitality to his collaborators,and always avoided conflicts, serious or not, with regards to the relentless pass-ing of time. Over the years, the company structure of Luben Glass has grown, and now hasabout 15 employees, with whom there has always been a relationship of esteemand respect. The business has grown and, thanks to the dynamism that Francohas transferred to his collaborators, Luben today has become an important activ-ity, always working to find new products (the company has many patentsdeposited over the last five years) in the sector for the production of diverseequipment and plants for IS forming machines.In 2010, the death of Franco left an incredible void both in Luben Glass as well as inthe glass sector. Now, the commitment of all those who work in the company is thatof continuing the positive trend of Luben Glass, developing new products and work-ing to the utmost to satisfy clients, exactly how Mr. Moschini always did.

When cleaning moulds with theultrasonic system, the dimensionsof the washed pieces are not alteredand, consequently, the weight of thebottle/article remains unchanged.This results in double savings onthe cost of the article and on the lifeof the mould.
Cubolux 6ST mould and plungerpolishing system
The patented polishing system ofCubolux enables to obtain perfectpolishing of the mould cavity with-out abrading the internal surface,thus maintaining shapes anddimensions.
Cubolux is the ideal machine forpolishing shaped and/or carvedmoulds; it enables the mould itselfto have a longer working life andmaintain its productivityunchanged over time.
Some of the main advantages ofCubolux are as follows:• easy to use;
• reduction in the wear ofmould cavities;
• ideal for polishing shapedand carved items;
• increase in mould life;• at the end of the cycle,
moulds can be used in pro-duction or stored withoutneeding any lubricationsystem.
IL 500 blade lubrication plant
This plant guaranteesmaximum reliability andefficiency as it comes com-plete with spares for eachcomponent, which can beutilized immediately in thecase of breakdown, orwhenever maintenance isnecessary. This means thata continuous work cycle ispossible without the need tointerrupt blade lubrication.The plant can be connected to aring circuit and is arranged torecycle emulsion.
Main characteristics of the plantinclude:• compact size for ease of fitting;• metal framed platform to support
all system components andenable easy movement using afork lift;
• stainless steel containers for stor-age and mixing of the product;
• pulse counter to ensure perfectoil dosages;
• pump for regulating dosages ofoil reintegration;
• electrical safety valve to controlaccidental water spillage;
• electrical system for completeautomatic operation of thelubrication plant with visual/sound;
• grid duplex filter with cast ironbody for optimum filtering of theemulsion to ensure that no impu-rities reach the spray nozzlespositioned near the blades;
• electrical safety valve to controlaccidental water spillage;
• lights to illuminate the plant dur-ing inspection or maintenance.

ccording to the latest glassrecycling estimates[1] –published one yearahead of the official
Eurostat data more than 67 percent of glass bottles and jars werecollected for recycling in theEuropean Union in 2009. The fig-ures released by FEVE, the EUContainer Glass Federation, trans-late into about 11 million tonnes or25 billion glass bottles and jarsbeing collected throughout theEuropean Union, confirming thesteady and positive trend of thelast years (66 per cent in 2008[2]).
“Glass recycling increases each
year thanks to the commitment ofconsumers everywhere. Our indus-try is able to turn this waste into avaluable resource to make new bot-tles and jars because glass bynature is 100 per cent recycleable,”says Niall Wall, President of FEVE.
Recycling glass avoids the use ofvirgin raw materials, reduces energyconsumption and greenhouse gasemissions. Glass recycling con-tributes to creating and securingeconomic growth and local employ-ment in Europe because glass islocally collected, locally recycledand locally produced.

The act of recycling means thatglass producers can make use ofthe same materials over and overagain. This characteristic of glassputs the material at the centrestage in the ambitious strategy ofthe European Commission tomake the European Union a ‘cir-cular economy’ where recycling isthe key factor to waste reductionand where waste is considered as avaluable resource[3].
“I believe strongly in moves tomake Europe more resource effi-cient”, comments Linda McAvan –
Member of the EuropeanParliament for Yorkshire and theHumber. “EU Directives set out arequirement to increase recyclingrates as they will help to reducedemand for primary raw materials,to reuse valuable materials whichwould otherwise end up as waste,and to reduce energy consumption.This is fundamental to build a solidresource efficient economy.”
Linda McAvan is a Member of theEuropean Parliament for Yorkshireand the Humber in the UnitedKingdom. She is a Member of theEuropean Parliament’s Environment,Public Health & Food SafetyCommittee, and serves as Labour’sspokesperson on these issues. Shealso serves on the DevelopmentCommittee and as Vice Chair of theJoint African, Caribbean andPacific European Union Assembly.
These goals can be met onlywhere materials can be reused invaluable schemes or can be actuallyrecycled in closed loop systems likethose for glass bottle – which aregold standards in the matter.Materials that are down cycled foranother use than for the original one

are ejected from the closed loop sys-tem and are often ultimately generat-ing waste destined for incinerationor landfill.
Hence the importance of review-ing and improving best practices incollection and treatment of keywaste streams as recently announcedby the European Commission intheir coming review of the‘Thematic Strategy on waste preven-tion and recycling’[4] foreseen in2012 which they hope will helpEurope achieve the long term goalof a recycling society.
