THE STRONGEST FIELD SEEN ON DANISH SOIL _ SO EXCITING!

In his opening speach Jens Auken adressed His Royal Highness Prince Consort of Denmark with a special wel-come and added: _ On behalf of the Organi-zing Committee and the Danish Bridge Federation I am very happy and proud to bid you all a very warm welcome. It is the strongest field we have ever seen on Danish soil _so exciting. And the running results shown on the wall proved that Jens was right in his prediction. The final result was that the poker king, Gus Hansen, and Irish Tom Halon managed to win the PRO-AM tournament only 1 point ahead of Jens Krusaa_Boye Brogeland.

The winner off the east_west-side was Jens Krusaa_Boye Brogeland. When you are a bold bidder, you sometimes need a bit off luck. Jens Krusaa was very optimistic, and bid this 6¤. North lead >E and continued with a diamond. When Jens now played all his hearts it was dif-ficult for North_South to keep the right cards in the black suits, and when West at last played <E and a club to the king, he got the last trick with <3 and a lucky but very welcome top on the way to be the best east-west pair.

One of the good advices in the welcomespeach to the Pro’s and the Am’s was ”keep it simple”. In board nr. 10 the Danish AM, Claus Hastrup, remembered the lesson.

vest nord øst syd Lars Lone Claus Erik Blakset Kjær Hastrup Sælensminde

1# pas 2< pas 4ut 1 pas 5# 2 pas 7< pas 7ut pas pas pas 1. Aces?2. 2+<DClaus opened at the one-level with 1# , and when his partner bid 2<, Claus set his mind directly on the route to a grand slam. After controling the aces he very bold bid 7<, and Lars Blakset in South had a little bit in reserve inclusive #D, and it was match points, so he corrected to 7ut. No problem in the play, 13 tricks, when the spa-desuit produced 5 tricks. Maybe North would have preferred to play against 7<-:). Only one more pair had bid the grand slam, and it was (of couse) Zia and Ulla Korre Peder-sen.

The Hamman ruleDo you know Hamman’s Rule? „When three notrump is one of the alter-natives, choose it.“ Nils Foss picked up this hand in the middle of the tournament:

# 4 3 ¤ 7 > K Q 8 6 5 4 < A T 4 3

and when partner, Krzysztof Martens, opened 1#, of course he bid 2>. 2¤ from Martens, and ... Nils doesn’t know Hamman’s rule, but for many years he has used his own rule, the very same: 3nt! 6nt from Martens didn’t affect Nils _ he made 12 tricks without problems with this distribution:

Foss, Sælensminde, Martens and Lone Kiær

Nils was rewarded with +13 _ I don’t know for sure, but my guess is, that he received a club lead.

5 Copenhagen Bridge Invitational

Carefull play from courtHis Royal Highness Prins Consort of Denmark loves the game of bridge, and we were grateful when he accepted to participate in the PRO-AM tournament playing together with French Philippe Cronier. Communicating outside the bridge table was no problem of course. _ ... because I am an ex-French, Prince Henrik laughed. But seated at the bridge table ... what about the language of bidding?

vest nord øst syd His Royal Torsten Philippe Ivan Highness Bernes Cronier Nadelman pass 2> 2¤ 3> 4¤ pass pass passAt seven tables North-South made 3nt, but at this table game was bid and made on the East-West cards, and Prince Henrik made 11 tricks

by careful play _ thus adding +18 to the +17 from the first board of this round. The play went like this: After the >K North shifted to a trump: Low heart, king and ace. Now, heart to ¤Q and back to the jack was followed by <8 to <Q. A spade went to the #K and #A, and North had quite of a problem. He didn’t dare to play spade from the #J, but the diamond shift was no better. West ruffed, played a club to the ace (thanks!), and after two more club tricks West was able to reach dummy on the well preser-ved #Q to discard the spade looser on the last club. Very well played!

It was a nice experience! After the tournament I asked Prince Henrik of his opinion about the event: _ It was very well organized, and as a player I liked the good atmosphere among the players in the tournament. Indeed it was a very nice experience to me being here, and I ap-preciated the partership with Philippe Cronier very much. In the middle of the tournament we managed to be in the group who faught for medalas and prizes, but we ended up as 13. Not so bad in that strong field, I think! _ Thanks, Your Royal Highness.

As a player I liked the good atmosphere!

6 Copenhagen Bridge Invitational

All in ... in bridge!?Maybe you have witnessed Gus Hansens suc-ces at the poker table, but who knew that he is a bridge player as well? „I started playing bridge when I was about 14 years old, but not very much. Chess, go, backgammon and poker took over. In my opinion bridge is a fascinating game, and I happily accepted to join this event. And I look forward to play with Tom Hanlon, who by the way is a poker player as well.“ I sat down at Gus’ table to see the very first hand:

vest nord øst syd Nielsen Hanlon Zorlu Gus 1¤ pass 2ut pass 3< pass 3> pass 3# pass 4< pass 4# pass 4nt pass 5¤ pass pass pass

„Keep it simple!“, the players were advised before making deals about what to play in this tournament. Simple? Look what Irish Hanlon had in his bag for Gus: 2nt was gameforce with trump support, 3< asked for cuebids, and that was what followed until RKCB/1430 revealed the lack of first controls. The dangerous fivelevel was used as a parking place. The lead, #3, went to the #Q, East came in with the ¤A, and shifted to a diamond. Now it didn’t take Hanlon many minutes to make 12 tricks, as one club disappeared on the fourth diamond and the other on the #A after the marked finesse. 480 was top on the board _ 18 times the score was 450, while one player bid and made 2nt(!) and another went one down, probably in 6¤. Welcome to the bridge table, Gus!

Gus may get a chance to show, that „All in“ will work at the bridge table as well.

BRIDGE BASE ONLINE Kibitzers are very welcome at the Ti-voli Congress Hotel (free entrance), but Copenhagen Bridge Invitational will be transmitted on Bridge Base Online, the BBO, as well. In the main event Friday, Saturday and Sunday focus are on the table with the leading pair plus one more table.
