Community and Economic Development Report

The Regional Chamber of Commerce reported that expanding tourism would be a viable strategy for Eastern Kentucky in order to increase jobs creation. Extension is working to facilitate that initiative.

The Stafford Project report: Year two of the Stafford Project and programming: A Taste of May dinner theatre, the Garden Club flower show, multiple Teas, the first Wedding in over 100 years, Civil War Re-enactment, Apple Days Showcase, Woodworking Showcase, Spooky Tales, and coming soon— “Heritage Games” and “Home for the Holidays.” It is currently paying for itself, but the final purchase price will probably have to be funding through a grant. The business plan is based on Kentucky Proud products and the hospitality industry working in concert with local cultural heritage attributes such as music, art, and performances

OSCAR report: More than 30 classes have been offered in 2013, bookings for parties, weddings, reunions and family gather-ings continue. Two art studios continue as does the workshop room. The leadership continues to grow.

Johnson County Family and Consumer Sciences has joined with other FCS programs throughout the county and are working together to create fine dining experiences for food service. Students in Culinary Arts and

Foods and Nutrition classes at Paintsville and Johnson Central are joining in. Throughout 2014, The Stafford House and other tourism destinations throughout the county, such as the OS-CAR, will be piloting the project by hosting events that utilize Kentucky Proud and other locally produced products. This project will include demonstrations and activities that highlight and expand upon our unique

cultural attributes and food market. Contact us if you would like to know more at 606-789-8108.

The Extension Coun-cil learns how to tell their story— Karen Kimbrel and Joy Jinks came to Paintsville to tell about “Swamp Gravy” and serve as our consultants for upcoming program efforts, Peyton Clay learns to eat healthy with fruits and vege-tables (most straight from the garden), Route 23 Cultural Heritage Network plans for 2013, and FCS Agents from District 1 meet to plan for the National Asso-ciation for Family and Consumer Science meeting in 2014! (Special thanks to Ex-tension Homemakers for their support!)

Page 7: Cooperative Extension Service Family and Consumer Sciences ...

The Oil Springs Cultural Arts and Recreation Center was sighted as one of the county’s most interesting centers and one with tremendous potential. Consultants Joy Jinks and Karen Kimbrel recommended the OSCAR as being the site for the upcoming play that will be designed to celebrate our own unique stories right here in Eastern Kentucky. This project will be announced later but has been tentatively scheduled to take place in June, 2014.

Volunteers make celebrating and preserving our heritage possible! Many thanks to: Cindy Blair Vicki Rice Tammy Penix Norma Burchett Sandra Hall Martha Risner Alice Hill Deborah Burchett Sandy Salyers, Jenny Robinson and all the rest too! This year’s Second Sunday was more like the third Sunday and we celebrated it on the Dawkins Line.

25 people came but most were out from out of town enjoying the wonderful trail we have. More work is being done to improve this local asset which will bring more people to our town as well as give us one more way to

be healthy and active in our communities.

Communities of Hope

Johnson County received this grant allowing us to hire a coordinator to help families build strength during challenging times. Stay tuned as more opportunities will come as a result of one of the largest agency com-

bined efforts we have ever had.

The second annual Beefin’ It Up was held at the Gary Davis Farm on Rt. 201. Over 250 people came together to enjoy locally produced beef, a petting zoo, snow cones, a restaurant recipe competition utilizing local beef (Wilma Eldridge won this year), hay rides, face painting and a tractor exhibit. Agents and producers are work-ing together to get local products on family tables and on menus across our county.

Heritage Days 2013 This year was a record breaking year! More than 800 students from surrounding coun-ties attended the event. Demonstrations continue to make the difference for volunteers and profes-sionals who dedicate their time to see that our history is kept in tact and people remember where their food comes from! “Children should know and understand where their food comes from, and we should be teaching them about gardening and other things.” Gary Davis, Extension Council Member

Now that is what I call making a homemade pumpkin pie!

Have you ever really though about what the first pies

might have been make like? We experimented this year at Heritage Days to find out! We ground the wheat with a

hand quern gristmill, we churned butter, milked the cow, gathered the eggs, boiled a home grown pumpkin, grated the cinnamon, used sorghum, and used lard for the crust. Bobby Joe Helmandollar, master of the cast iron stove,

put it all together and, there you have it, a homemade pumpkin pie!

Farm and Home Field Day was in River, Kentucky this year and had a number of activities for the community to enjoy. Family and Consumer Sciences held a traditional cake and cookie competition, had presentations on edible floral arrangements, the Country Music Quilt Block Trail, face painting, snow-cones, tours inside the oldest house in the county, and featured hikes to the Jenny Wiley gravesite. Agriculture joined FFA to host tours to a corn field where they had a test plot, and 4-H fea-tured vermin-composting. Farm Bureau sponsored a cook-out, while River Fire Department volunteers held activities for the youth. Over 100 attended and enjoyed the many activities.

A MESSAGE FROM BRENDA:

I thought 2012’s tornado was hard to re-cover from… and it was… but the past year came with its own challenges. After gaining my first grandchild, losing my mother, helping my father, and cop-ing with covering for three positions for more than a year, the list of difficulties laced with wonderful blessings reminds me that life is a precious gift not to be wasted, but cherished. I am very thank-ful for the awesome volunteers that pitch in and help with everything. Our pro-gram is very extensive because of their hard work. Happy New Year!
