cooling plant

A cooling plant belongs to the main units of an air conditioning system. Without a cooling plant it will be impossible to meet a comfort inside climate when cooling is needed. A cooling plant consist of four main components “Compressor, condenser, expansion valve and evaporator”. The diagram below shows the complete cooling circuit with all the main component as well the phase of the refrigerant in each stage of the circuit.

The selection of a cooling plant depends on several factors like the required cooling capacity, the refrigerant type and cooling medium.

There are two groups of cooling plants:- Direct expansion (DX) unit: A DX unit is mostly located near by the air handling unit to avoid long refrigerant pipe through the ship. The cooling coil inside the air handling unit operates as evaporator of the cooling plant.- Chilled water unit (CWU): are used for ships where there is a long distance between the air handling unit and the cooling plant or with several air handling units. The chilled water (mostly with a percentage of glycol) will be used as cooling medium between the evaporator and the cooling coil inside the air handling unit. An advantage of this system is that it avoids the long refrigerant pipes filled with Freon on board.

compressor

The compressor is a mechanical device that increase the pressure of the refrigerant gas by reducing the volume. There are four kind of compressors:1. Reciprocating compressor2. Scroll compressor3. Screw compressor4. Centrifugal compressor

Semi hermetic screw compressor Hermetic scroll compressor

Which kind of compressor is needed, depends on the needed capacity. Scroll and vacuum compressors are used for low compressor capacity and screw and centrifugal compressors are used for high compressor capacity. The most compressors are available in hermetic type, semi-hermetic type or open type.

condenser

A condenser is a heat exchanger that extract the heat of the compressed refrigerant by transferring it to a cooling medium (air/ water). In the condenser the refrigerant transforms from its vapor to its liquid state.

There are two different groups of condensers:• Air cooled condenser• Water cooled condenser

Air cooled condenser Water cooled condenser (shell/tube)

The water condensers can be divided in two types shell/tube or plate heat exchanger.

Plate heat exchanger shell/tube condenser

The size of the condenser depends on the available cooling medium (water or air) and the temperature of the cooling medium.

Expansion valve

The expansion valve removes pressure from the liquid refrigerant to allow expansion (change the state from liquid to a vapor) in the evaporator. The liquid refrigerant under high pressure entering the expansion valve is warm, the liquid refrigerant leaving the expansion valve is quite cold.

The orifice within the valve does not remove heat, but only reduces pres-sure. Heat molecules contained in the liquid refrigerant are thus allowed to spread as the refrigerant moves out of the orifice. Under a greatly reduced pressure the liquid refrigerant is at its coldest as it leaves the expansion valve and enters the evaporator. The expansion valve controls the amount of the refrigerant that flow into the evaporator. There are two kind of expansion valve:

Thermostatic expansion valve Electronic expansion valve

Evaporators

An evaporator is used to vaporize liquid into its vapor state. It is one of the main components in an air conditioning system. The evaporator is used as heat exchanger to allow a compressed refrigerant to evaporate from liquid to gas while absorbing the heat from the surroundings and transfer its cooling capacity to the surrounding medium (air or water).

There are three types of evaporators:• Shell and tube evaporator• Plate heat exchanger• Finned pipe heat exchanger
