Thanks to all for helping make out school a better place.

Phillips Exeter Academy Students Also Help Out EES A busload of students from Phillips Academy also visited our school this week to volunteer their services at our school. Thanks to them the gardens and path-ways were treated with some timely weeding, raking and spreading of mulch. PEA students also volunteered to read with students in classrooms and helped out in physical education classes and the library. Thanks to all those students and their teachers.

Mrs. Pattee 1st GradeMrs. Pattee 1st GradeMrs. Pattee 1st GradeMrs. Pattee 1st Grade EES welcomed the administrators and teachers from the Hampton school district earlier this week to

observe the wonderful learning we have been doing in literacy throughout our school. On Monday, 1P was especially honored to have these educators observe both readers’ and writers’ workshop. The students were eager to share their reading skills and strategies with the visitors. The teachers commented on the students’ enthusiasm and love for reading; as well as student knowledge and use of literacy language throughout all grade levels.

Thank you, Mrs. McTague, for volunteering your time during writers’ workshop on Tuesday. We en-joyed having you listen to our poetry. Students learned how poets use line breaks and white spaces to help their poems “look and sound right.” We will continue work in this poetry unit after vacation.

On Wednesday, students from Phillips Exeter Academy volunteered their morning to work with stu-dents in class and on school grounds. 1P was pleased to have two PEA students join us as we cleaned up our playground and garden area in honor of Earth day. These students were excellent role models as they shared and worked with us to improve our school environment. All of us worked very hard collecting trash, raking leaves and pulling weeds from the garden. Special thanks to Mrs. Page for providing her time and gardening tools. Back in class, we made posters to teach the reader different ways to recycle. We will hang these posters outside the classroom for everyone to see.

On Thursday, we said goodbye to our two UNH practicum students, Ms. Fiery and Ms. Stalzer. Over the past two months, Ms. Fiery and Ms. Stalzer have been reading with us and practicing literacy lessons dur-ing readers’ workshop on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We have learned a lot from them and wish them well in their teaching careers.

We ended the week with our school Talent Show. It was fun to see Karaoke performed by our peers. Thank you, Student Council, for organizing this event to foster school spirit.

Being recognized for good teaching practice by neighboring communities is such an honor. I am so proud of my students’ growth in all areas of the curriculum. Thank you, parents, for supporting your students’ learning. Enjoy your vacation!

Mrs. Rossel 2nd GradeMrs. Rossel 2nd GradeMrs. Rossel 2nd GradeMrs. Rossel 2nd Grade Happy Spring and Happy Earth Week! The students in 2R have been talking about our amazing planet and how we can work together to take care of it. We have cleaned up the school field of trash, written thank you letters to the Earth and planted flower seeds. Additionally, we have read several powerful books that talk about our earth including The Lorax, Dear Children of the World and Earth Dance. In Reader’s Workshop we have been studying the conventions of non-fiction including labels, photo-graphs, captions, comparisons, cutaways, maps, types of print, close-ups, tables of contents, an index and the glossary. We have also learned how to skim and scan to find important information in non-fiction text. During

this unit of study we focused on the collective works of Gail Gibbons. We learned that Gail was always a curi-ous child and liked to ask questions. She began making books when she was a little girl. Today, she has more that 135 published non-fiction books ranging in topics from pirates to coral reefs to pandas. In Writer’s Workshop we have also been focusing on non-fiction. We have written a collection of ‘How To’s.’ This includes ‘How to Make a Lego City, How to Take Care of a Dog, and How to Make a Paper Snowflake. We are also finishing up our “All About” books. Each student chose a research topic (dogs, surf-ing, birds, hamsters, lacrosse). Then, they researched the topic and wrote a book that included both a table of contents and several chapters. The students are including many non-fiction conventions including labels and captions. We even have some books that include indexes and glossaries!! I am so proud of the students’ growth as writers! Stay tuned for more information about an Author’s Tea that will showcase our wonderful books. In Mathematics, we are in the midst of Unit 10 which focuses on Decimals and Place Value. Our les-sons have included a review of money identification and adding money, decimal notation for pennies and dimes, money amounts on a calculator, estimating and finding exact costs, making change, place value up to the ten thousands place and grouping with parenthesis. I enjoyed meeting with all of you at Parent Conference time. I hope you all have a wonderful vacation and I look forward to seeing in you in May!

Mrs. Thompson 3rd GradeMrs. Thompson 3rd GradeMrs. Thompson 3rd GradeMrs. Thompson 3rd Grade Hooray!! Spring is here. Where did the time go? I have a hard time believing we’re in our last quarter for the year!! The students have been working very hard in all areas. Most recently they have selected, researched and are writing a book about a favorite topic. Some of the chosen topics are dogs, cats, horses, trains, fish, frogs and trees. The students have worked diligently gathering information from three sources, and developing three chapters. I’m impressed with the interesting facts they are learning about and including in their books! In Readers’ Workshop the third graders have been reading many, many poems in our poetry unit. They learned about figurative language and how a poet creates mental images for the reader. Many students enjoyed reading poetry aloud in our Poetry Café and some even memorized poems to recite! Retelling and summarizing are the next skills we’re practicing in readers’ workshop. The students are doing well in multiplication and have learned about fractions. Currently we’re learning about partial products. Again, the need to know the basic facts is evident. Please help your child study the ba-sic facts with oral drills and games. In Science the students learned about Simple Machines. They are working in groups to create Carnival

projects to demonstrate their understanding of the terms and facts related to this unit. I can’t wait to see

the creative projects!! Have a wonderful spring break!

Mrs. Feld 5th GradeMrs. Feld 5th GradeMrs. Feld 5th GradeMrs. Feld 5th Grade Wow! April vacation is already here! It's hard to believe that it will soon be May! We have been working so hard this year and still have quite a bit to squeeze into the last two months... In Everyday Math, we have just finished up Unit 6 (Using Data; Addition and Subtraction of Frac-tions). Students have learned how to find common denominators, change between improper fractions and mixed numbers, and reduce to lowest terms. After vacation, we will move onto our second math journal and begin Unit 7. I continue to remind students how important knowing all their math facts is. Any extra time spent practicing at home will really make it easier for them! During Reader’s Workshop, we have begun our Fantasy unit. Students really seem to enjoy this genre and have selected some great books for their Independent Reading. Eventually, we will be using everything

we learn about Fantasy stories to help create our own in Writer’s Workshop. We are all looking forward to this! Science time finds us exploring cells. This week, we conducted an experiment with yeast, sugar, and warm water. Ask your child to tell you about it! We also had some amazing cell projects on display this week. Everyone did a fantastic job creating models of plant and animal cells… We even got to eat some of the projects! During Writer’s Workshop, we have completed our non narrative books and had a wonderful Publish-ing Celebration on Wednesday. Students invited friends from throughout the school to come and see what we have been working on and to celebrate our final products! It was great to see everyone so excited to share in-formation from their books. I am so proud of their hard work! Have a fabulous vacation!

In addition to keyboarding techniques, students in grades 3, 4, and 5 have just completed their slide shows. Grades four and five made slide shows that incorporated their graphs on the possible outcomes of dice rolls. Grade three made a slide show about m&m colors. Students had much fun adding backgrounds, sounds, tran-sitions, and animation schemes to their slide shows. We are now working on digital stories. Classes have chosen a variety of topics for their story ideas. Some classes have also started to create artwork for their stories while other classes are using the Internet to obtain images of historical figures. If your child is using personal pictures from a family outing, it would be very helpful if the pictures could be sent to my school email account ([email protected]). If your child brings pictures to school, they can be scanned and returned to you. Overall, students are doing very good work in computer class!

Mrs. Peterson Health NewsMrs. Peterson Health NewsMrs. Peterson Health NewsMrs. Peterson Health News Spring has sprung but illnesses don’t seem to be taking a break. Please remember that ALL MEDICATIONS need to be delivered by a parent or guardian to our office. We have specific paperwork that needs to be filled out (by parent/guardian) before we can administer any medication. If your child needs to take medication 3 times per day, that can be done before school, after school and at bedtime. Any questions, please call the Health Office at 679-8018 x222.

When you come back from vacation, EVERYONE needs to bring their own water bottle to school!

Bring one and put your name on it. Then you can leave it here, drink the water and refill it everyday! That

way everyone stays hydrated and we aren’t adding more plastic to the landfills! Happy Earth Day!

Mrs. Landis Math NewsMrs. Landis Math NewsMrs. Landis Math NewsMrs. Landis Math News All classrooms spend time learning, practicing, and drilling math facts, but some students need additional prac-tice to gain Fact Power. Fact Power enables students to complete computations without relying on counting and to be more accurate. Fact Power is also a great time saver. Parents can help their children by picking a few facts at a time to practice. It is a good idea to also do turn-around facts (3 + 2 = 5 and 2 + 3 = 5) at the same time. To help develop automaticity have the whole fact

Being consistent with practicing, doing a few facts at a time, occasionally reviewing, and celebrating the ac-complishments will help to keep your child invested in the task.

Mrs. Boudreau Art NewsMrs. Boudreau Art NewsMrs. Boudreau Art NewsMrs. Boudreau Art News In Art Students have been working on a couple of projects. Right now students are drawing images to go with the song Somewhere Over the Rainbow/ what a wonderful world sung by Israel Kamakawiw’ole. Mrs. Col-man and I will be picking a few picture from each class and grade level that best illustrate the song. These will be used to create a slide show that will be shown at the spring concert. Students have also been working on a community art project for Hannafords. Hannafords donated paper bags that the students have decorated with eco-friendly messages and images to celebrate Earth Day. The paper bags are now on display at the Raymond Hannafords.

Ah, yes! Springtime is finally upon us! The sun is warm, the birds are chirping and the students at E.E.S. are singing up a storm, preparing for our annual Spring Concerts! Our concert theme this year will be “Perfect Harmony” – Songs of Peace, Brotherhood and Conservation. All of the songs will reflect the idea of living in perfect harmony with each other and the earth. This year is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and some classes will be singing about ‘good’ garbage. Others will even be trying their hand at Swahili! The students are very excited about this new theme and their songs. Your antici-pation and support will encourage them to do their best. Here are the details for both concerts:

Both concerts will be held in the Middle School Gym (same as December) and will last about an hour. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the Spring Concerts! If you have any questions regarding the upcoming con-certs, please feel free to contact me at 679-8018. Best wishes for a wonderful spring!

Congratulations to the Harvey Mitchell Library Story Explorers for an exciting production of “The Ginger-bread Man’ at Pajama Night on April 9th. The group of Epping 5-10 year olds spent 12 weeks practicing and preparing each Tuesday afternoon at the library creating a story play full of action and humor. Miss Tracie would like to applaud Christie Allen, Luke and Will Barker, Kristopher Birarelli, Isabelle Deary, Colin and Sydney Farris, Ben Fowler, Alethia James, Mackenzie McAniff, Ryan MacVicar, and Caleb and Noah White as well as volunteers Carissa Johnson and Tyler Wilkins for all their hard work. Additional kudos go to the parents and siblings of the cast and crew for their support and patience during some crazy rehearsals.

The next session of Story Explorers will be starting on Tuesday, May 4th (this is a change from what had been listed previously) and will focus on the science and art found in so many wonderful stories. This class is open to kids in kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade and meets Tuesday afternoons at 3:30. Pre registration is required and class size is limited. Parents must plan to remain in the building during class time. Tomorrow is the 4th Saturday this month which is HMML’s Toy Play Day. This month the theme is Trucks. Children are invited to bring a few of their favorite trucks to play with at the library and share with other kids who might be “wheel obsessed”. We will create masking tape roads throughout the children’s room and have all our truck books in one place. May’s Play Day will be our annual Spring Tea Party on May 22nd. Vacation week means movies in the children’s room each afternoon at 1:00. A frog and a princess, a fish-girl, an alien planet, and a mouse with a knack for detective work will all appear on the big screen. Call or stop by for a less cryptic listing of the movie schedule. Movie goers are asked to bring a spill-resistant beverage and a snack to share. Did you ride your bike to the library on March 16th and then get a ride home with someone? We have an or-phan bicycle at the library that appeared the morning after a Tuesday night meeting. If you can answer yes to the above question, please call the library to identify your bike and make arrangements to take it home. For more information about any library programs please call 679-5944.
