The New Zealand Blood Service is ap-pealing for the community to head along and donate blood at a local drive next week.

Next Thursday, a blood drive will be held at the ASB Centre in Kilbirnie and the New Zealand Blood Service are hoping for at least 60 donors to attend on the day.

Nicola Binns from the New Zealand Blood Service said this was the fi rst time there had been a blood drive in Kilbirnie for more than 10 years.

She said this was because there had not

been enough support at previous drives held in the area.

“We are hoping that with all the extra busi-ness in the area now, it will be a success.”

The blood drive was organised after local business owner, Terry Binding from Nailed It, approached them, Nicola said.

“Terry has delivered fl yers to all Kilbirnie businesses and has been a great support. But we still really need support from all local businesses in Miramar and surrounding suburbs.”

Over 70 people turned out to collect nearly 100 full bags of rubbish at a clean-up day, organised by a nine-year-old school girl, in Johnsonville.

Maya Johnstone of West Park School decided there was too much rubbish in the community and somebody needed to do something about it.

After learning about the environment in class, Maya put together a slide show displaying the effects that littering and pollution can have on the environment.

She then got a variety of members of the community involved and organised a big clean-up day for Sunday, November 8.

HappyBirthday

Today 5-13 Friday 9-16 Saturday 10-17 Sunday 11-17

By Nikki Papatsoumas

A Kilbirnie resident celebrated a very special milestone last week.

Walter John Barrat, who is known to his friends and family as Jack, turned 104 last Sunday.

Residents and staff at Rita Angus Retirement Village in Kilbirnie, where Jack lives, helped the centenarian celebrate the momentous occasion with a special birthday party last Friday, complete with balloons, streamers, presents and a birthday cake.

Jack’s grandson, Richard Batchelar, said his grandfather had accomplished a lot to be proud of over the last century.

Jack was born in Foxton in 1911 and spent most of his life in the Horowhenua.

you are at your saddest.

Come and join us at our service of remembrance and gather strength from others.

This Christmas let’s support one another.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME!

Continued from page 2“It’s quite sad seeing all the

rubbish on the ground.“Me and my friends used to

go to butterfl y fi eld next to the school, but when the fl owers were taken away people started leaving their rubbish there.

“Now a lot of it is buried in the ground,” Maya said.

Maya said she has always liked the environment but this is the fi rst time she has done something big to help.

The young environmental-ist wants other schools to contribute to cleaning up the community saying “I want to teach people awareness”.

The council jumped on board the clean up, providing rubbish bags, gloves and the rubbish pick up at the end of the day.

Maya started the clean-up day by reading out a health and safety notice for her helpers which included Lions mem-

bers, Keas, Brownies, Rotary members, Deputy Mayor Justin Lester, and other enthusiastic members of the community.

The youngest helpers started from three-years-old, fi lling bags full of rubbish to help out Maya.

Justin Lester said what Maya was doing was fantastic and he would like to organise more clean ups across the region.

“We want to plan clean up days in places like Newlands, Paparangi, Glenside and Tawa for February next year.

“The council is also working on a new design for recycling bins that stops the rubbish fl ying out in the wind,” he said.

At the end of the clean-up volunteers went back to West Park School where they had tea and coffee provided by Zampelles, and a barbeque with sausages that was spon-sored by 1841.

A former Thorndon resident has created a painting of the Khandallah Town Hall as part of his exhibition.

Nic Dempster used acrylic on board to create the image displayed at Tinakori Road’s Millwood Gallery.

Gallery owner Murray Pillar said during his schooling, Nic was happiest during art lessons.

Nic began to paint in the late 1990s.

“New Zealand artists Robin White, Doris Lusk and Colin McCahon have been strong influences on his style and subjects,” said Murray.

Murray explained how Nic’s visits to Khandallah are more frequent now as his parents-in-law live in the suburb.

Nic was impressed with the strength of presence the local building has and so decided to replicate it through his art.

After serving Wellington city for 22 years, the iconic Brooklyn turbine was dis-mantled last week before be-ing delivered to it new home.

Earlier this year, Meridian Energy announced it would be replacing the Brooklyn turbine with a new turbine with a greater generation capacity.

The Brooklyn turbine was fi nally dismantled last week. It will now be delivered to its new owners Energy 3, a sup-

plier and installer of turbines for smaller commercial wind farms.

Energy 3 would recondition the Brooklyn turbine and put it to work somewhere else.

Energy 3 founder Tom Cameron said the company jumped at the chance to pur-chase the Brooklyn turbine.

“We were very keen to buy the turbine for reuse rather than see it scrapped. Meridian has done a great job maintaining the turbine over

the years. We’re not sure where the

turbine will go once it’s re-conditioned, but all our wind projects (past and planned) are located on private land in remote areas.

“While potentially being visible, the turbine, wherever it goes, will be in an area that will not be open to the public.”

Meanwhile, the new Brook-lyn turbine will arrive at Wellington’s CentrePort from

Germany at the end of March. It will take about three weeks to get it up and running.

In early January contractors will start to prepare the site for the new turbine and this will involve construction of a new turbine foundation.

The new turbine will gener-ate around 3,900 megawatt hours a year – enough to power around 490 average homes.

The budget to replace the turbine is $2.9m.

coordinator, Karin Grice, said senior students at the school get to take part in a ‘passion project’ activity, where they take something they love and work it up to a project.

While some students selected cooking a three course meal and others wanted to sew their own pair of harem pants, for their passion project, Sebastian, Gabriel and Lachlan proposed to create their very own street art.

Over two terms this year the boys worked out a proposal, a budget and some test ideas.

This involved surveying their peers, teachers and various members of the community, including Mayor of Wellington Celia Wade-Brown.

Those surveyed were asked to share what they believed was iconic to Island Bay and the results from the survey were then taken into account when design-ing the fi nal look of the mural.

After fi nishing the mural with the help of local artist and Se-bastian’s mother Juliet Best and artist Bruce Mahalski, the street art work was offi cially opened by Wellington City Councillor Paul Eagle at a special ceremony

on Tuesday. The mural created with spray

paint is made up of a selection of icons inspired by local artists and the community and include a kayak, an octopus, Tapu te Ranga Island and even a pie.

Sebastian, who initiated the project, said they were inspired by Andrew J Steel and Dside, who used to be BMD, Bruce Mahalski and Sean Duffel.

They even had the chance to consult with Andrew J Steel of BMD in the process of plan-ning the mural, he said.

He said they were also in-spired by Toby Chapel, a well-known skateboarder, whose motto ‘never lose hope’ is a theme the boys focused on when designing the wall.

Sebastian said Toby was their main inspiration.

“Toby is a really inspiring amazing person.”

Sebastian also thanked the community for their input and inspiration.

“We learned a lot doing this project and we learned a lot about ourselves. I really love art and the way you can just be creative and create something. “With street art you can make any dull wall look amazing.”

Wellington Zoo is thrilled to have again achieved carboNZero certifi cation, after becoming the fi rst zoo in the world to be carboNZero certifi ed in May 2013. Wellington Zoo chief executive, Karen Fifi eld, said regaining certifi cation for each fi nancial year showed Wellington Zoo was leading the way in sustain-ability. “Conservation is at the heart of everything we do, and this achievement shows how very seriously we take our commitment to minimising the Zoo’s environmental impact.”

A share of $12.3 million will see a new two-storey block, safer drop-off areas and a sheltered outdoor recreation centre for Newtown School.

Earlier this week, Associate Education Minister Nikki Kaye, announced the govern-ment would invest $12.3 mil-lion to redevelop Newtown School and Ngaio School.

Ms Kay said the redevelop-ments would help address

roll growth and a range of building and site issues, in-cluding weathertightness and structural strengthening.

She said it would also create exciting new innovative learn-ing environments for students.

“An $8.9 million redevelop-ment of Newtown School will see temporary buildings at the school replaced with new fl exible learning spaces, including a new Maori im-

mersion unit.“A two-storey block at the

school was demolished in 2011 following a seismic review, and the school has since been using a number of temporary learning spaces,” Ms Kay said.

She said the redevelopment would see a new two-storey block built, along with shel-tered outdoor recreation areas and safe drop-off areas.

“Plans for the redevelopment aim to make the most of the school’s small compact site, and also allow for future roll growth,” she said.

Since early November more than $83 million worth of school redevelopments in Wellington have been an-nounced.

Construction at Newtown School is expected to start late in 2016.

Local business owners in the small suburb of Berhampore say the announcement of lower speed limits in their neighbour-hood could help give the com-munity its own identity.

Last week the Wellington City Council confi rmed the speed limit in the shopping areas of Berhampore, Khandallah, Ngaio, Northland, and Wades-town would be reduced from 50km/h to 30km/h.

It also announced it would extend the existing 50km/h area northwards along Happy Valley Road.

The safer speed limits in these areas will come into effect in early 2016.

The Wellington City Council said the decision was in response to overwhelming support from the community to lower speed limits in these neighbourhoods.

It said 81 per cent of the 391 submissions received from each of the fi ve areas, were in favour of lowering the speed limits.

This comes after a total of 68 crashes resulting in injury were reported in or near these fi ve shopping areas from 2007 to 2013. Of these crashes, 18 caused injuries to pedestrians.

Wellington City Councillor David Lee said a lower speed

limit in Berhampore would help make the suburb a destina-tion, while keeping residents, motorists and cyclists safe.

“I have spoken to quite a few local personalities. They do actually want to make this sub-urb a place to stop rather than a thoroughfare between the two bigger areas of Newtown and Island Bay.”

Owners of Adelaide Trading Co. Licensed Delicatessen, Z Snook and John Heald, have also welcomed the decision.

The men said they jumped at the opportunity to invest in a local business earlier this year and hoped slower speed zones would help attract more business.

“I think it’s great, just pop-ping across the road to post a letter can sometimes take a wee while and accidents happen,” Z said.

John said lower speed limits were just what was needed in the community and he hoped it would help Berhampore adopt

its own identity and market the suburb as a destination.

“[Berhampore] is old school and it is up and coming, it’s a small wee village… anything that gives an area an identity in a positive fashion is a good idea, as long as it is done with taste and style.”

Other Wellington suburbs with lower speed limits already in place include Brooklyn, Hataitai, Island Bay, Kilbirnie, Miramar, Newtown, Seatoun and Strathmore Park.

A local group which works to keep Wellington’s Pasifi ka com-munity safe recently celebrated a year of service.

The Pasifika Patrollers is a voluntary service which works to keep Pacifi c people safe and crime free in Wellington’s com-munities.

There are more than 33 men and woman involved in the service.

Together they patrol Welling-ton’s CBD on Saturday night and attend community events and festivals across the city.

The establishment of the Pasi-fi ka Patrollers was a joint project between Wellington Police,

Wellington City Council and Wellington’s Pasifi ka communi-ties in partnership with Com-munity Patrol New Zealand.

A recruitment drive for vol-unteers began in November last year and recently Wellington’s Pasifika communities, police and civic leaders celebrated the fi rst anniversary of the service.

Project coordinator Constable Loletta Hunt-Tevaga introduced the initiative to the capital last year.

She said she was interested in adopting the model in Wel-lington after seeing it work successfully in Auckland.

“The reason being was because I found that Pasifi ka youth were getting the attention of police

here in Wellington.“Over the last year they have

been received really well not only by Pasifi ka people but by the whole community.”

Councillor Paul Eagle, chair of the committee responsible for city safety and member of the city’s Pasifi ka Advisory Group, said the initiative ushered in a new era of leadership for Wel-lington’s Pasifi ka communities.

“This initiative is about Pasi-fi ka people owning the issues that impact on their communi-ties – and responding in a cultur-ally appropriate way.”

He said the Pasifi ka Patrollers empowered pacific people to prevent crime and victimisation because talking with someone

Kerbside bike lanes are begin-ning to appear while new pedes-trian crossings and concrete bike paths are nearing completion on The Parade in Island Bay.

Road markings will continue to be put in place one block at a time until February with the section between Dee Street and the shop-ping centre already completed.

New parking bays are clearly marked out from the kerb, creat-

ing a lane next to the footpath for people on bikes.

Chair of the Wellington City Council’s transport and urban de-velopment committee Councillor Andy Foster, said these improve-ments are examples of the kinds of changes Wellingtonians will soon see in other places around the city.

“It’s about taking a fresh look at the road and footpath space we

have and how we can best use it to improve transport choices.”

One of the things people like most about Wellington is its compact nature and the relatively short distances they have to travel to get to work, study and other places, Andy said.

“Better walking and cycling routes will just add to its appeal and make the city an even more attractive place to live and visit.”

The improvements along The Parade are on track to be fi nished before the Island Bay Festival in mid-February next year.

Improvements include kerbside cycle lanes between Shorland Park and the Dee Street rounda-bout, four new pedestrian cross-ings, intersection improvements and concrete paths.

Andy warned people to take extra care parking and getting

in and out of cars in the newly marked bays.

“If you’re on a bike and trying out new sections of lane, be aware you will need to negotiate a mix of new and old facilities until the construction work is fi nished.”

The construction team will be taking a break over the Christ-mas and New Year period from December 23 and will be back on January 5.

“The patrollers look out for vulnerable people, people at risk and the young so they can offer support and guidance. They are well respected within their communities.

“They know the families and with their unique Pacific ap-proach, have made a big dif-ference.” People wanting to become a Pasifika Patroller can con-tact Constable Loletta Hunt-Tevaga on 04 381 2000 or at [email protected]

The iconic Christmas food appeal, ‘Pack the Bus’ has had another successful year.

For the last 23 years Pack the Bus has been collecting donations from around Wellington for the Wellington City Mission in the lead up to Christmas.

Its last day for collection this year was December 4 and or-ganisers said they were once again overwhelmed with the generosity displayed by many Wellingtonians.

Wellington City Councillor Simon Marsh dreamed up the idea more than two decades ago.

He said he came up with the idea when former Wellington City Missioner Father Des Britten said to him, “If we had a bus load of food we would be right”.

Simon has been involved in one way or another with the Pack the Bus initiative every year since its inception, beginning in his days as a presenter on More FM.

The Breeze radio station now manages and staffs the Go Wel-lington Bus with personalities, singers and Santa.

“It was obvious. We just needed a bus so I went out and borrowed one. The bus became my studio for two weeks; we’d take it to businesses and schools, they were happy to do the collecting and we put some fun into the day.”

Simon said this year Welling-

School children are among those who donated generously in this year’s Pack the Bus initiative.

tonians were so generous, the bus had to be emptied three times over two weeks.

Chief executive of the Wellington City Mission, Michelle Branney, said it was great to have Pack the Bus as part of the mission’s Christmas Star Appeal.

“It’s a great opportunity for the

community to participate in the act of Christmas giving, and through The Mission, food, gifts and good-will are distributed to those in need.

“But the goodwill extends well beyond Christmas – the food dona-tions help stock our Foodbank so we can help those in need going into next year too.”

Pack the Bus a success Last week the Wellington

City Council announced plans to build a combined movie museum and convention centre in Wellington. At an extraordinary meeting held last week, the Wellington City Council voted unanimously to purchase land opposite Te Papa, between Wellington’s Cable and Wake eld Streets. The council has agreed in principle to build a movie museum together with a new

purpose-built convention centre on the site. Meanwhile, the council will partner with private interests headed by Sir Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Sir Richard Taylor, and Tania Rodger, to deliver the movie museum, which will celebrate the lm heritage of Welling-ton, identifying the capital as the home of film where ve of the world’s 12 highest-grossing lms of all time were produced.

More than 27 events across the city have received funding to celebrate Neighbours Day Aotearoa 2016. The Wellington City Council’s community, sport and recreation commit-tee has approved grants worth $12,195 to fund the 27 events. The theme for Neighbours Day Aotearoa 2016 in Wellington is

‘Growing Neighbourhoods’. Council sta will be at com-munity fairs and festivals over the summer giving away free edible seeds, neighbours cards, #wellynextdoor story postcards and emergency preparedness posters. Neigh-bours Day will take place on March 19 and 20.

Masons Lane, a popular pedes-trian link between The Terrace and Lambton Quay has been given a stylish new look thanks to painting, paving and feature lighting. The transformation is one of many set to revitalise the city’s hidden passageways. The lane’s most innovative fea-ture is a 24 hour digital screen dedicated to moving image

art. Known as Masons Screen, the project is a partnership be-tween the Council and Circuit Artist Film and Video Aotearoa and will showcase 12 new and existing works in its pilot year, including three specially commissioned pieces. Masons Lane was o cially opened on Wednesday, with a blessing and short presentation.

A 10 year plan for Island Bay was the main topic of discussion at Monday’s meeting of the Island Bay Residents As-sociation.

President of the association, Vicki Greco, said the association intended to go out to the community, to consult and then de-termine their vision of Island Bay.

“This will include economic growth, rec-reation and the look and feel of Island Bay as a whole.”

Vicki said residents already had plenty of interesting ideas which could be included in the plan.

“It’s the village, it’s the beach and people have suggested that maybe down by the beach they have things where people can hire kayaks. A coff ee shop and more busi-ness by the beach which could be shut down in the winter months has also been suggested.

“The community centre itself is not big enough. The surf club could be a good vi-able option as a community centre and a focal point of the community.”

Consultation will begin in February at the Island Bay Festival, Vicki said and rec-ommendations for what a 10 year plan would involve would only be accepted by members of the community.

She said the association would have also designed its website and Facebook page by February, as another way of reaching out to the community.

“We want to work with the council to deliver what the community wants, not

what has been imposed on us.“This is the most important thing we will

do for Island Bay. Getting this 10 year plan together and knowing it’s the work of Is-land Bay as a majority and working with the council in making it happen.”

More than 50 people attended this week’s meeting of the residents associa-tion and Vicki said they encouraged any-one who wanted to get involved and have their say, to send an email to [email protected]

Families at a local creche have a deli-cious edible garden to enjoy thanks to the efforts of a hard working parent.

Kilbirnie Community Creche is nes-tled away behind the Kilbirnie Lyall Bay Community Centre.

Senior teacher Jannie Nehemia said parent Leolie Rentson approached them with the idea of planting an edible garden for the kids to enjoy.

“We never had a nice garden out there and she was quite keen to put in an edible garden.

“It’s been lovely, the kids and parents can just eat of it and take stuff out of it if they want.”

The creche’s edible garden is jam packed with tomatoes, strawberries, passionfruit, beans, apple trees, tan-gelos and nectarines. There are even edible fl owers.

Leolie said she thought it would be a great way for children from the creche to learn where food came from.

“My boy was a toddler at the time, I have an edible garden at home and he was always going into the garden and munching away.”

Hugo, Emerson and Kripa enjoy delights from an edible garden planted by Leolie Rentson.

A rest home with spark Kilmarnock Heights HomeAn elder-centred communityKilmarnock Heights Home is special; it’s more than just a rest home. As well as providing daily living support we ensure residents have choice and control in their lives. We take every opportunity to bring companionship, fun and meaningful activity into the lives of elders.

Family and friendsKilmarnock Heights Home is like one big family. Residents are encouraged to invite their loved ones to visit at any time; there’s no set visiting hours. And, for the children - we have a fully stocked toy box to keep them entertained!

Pets welcomeWe believe pets can be both calming and energising. So, we welcome animals at our home. If you have a pet that’s part of your family, ask us about moving to Kilmarnock Heights Home with them.

The social lifeAt Kilmarnock Heights Home we support residents to continue doing the things they love in a way that’s right for them. The busy social calendar and stimulating recreation programme certainly make for a vibrant and engaging atmosphere.

A south Wellington rest home believes their elder-directed phi-losophy is improving the lives of elders by focusing on holistic wellbeing.

Kilmarnock Heights Home in Berhampore is embracing a unique model of care called the Eden Alternative which works against the plagues of loneliness, helplessness and boredom.

Christine Cuthbert, who has worked as a chaplain at Kil-marnock Heights Home in Ber-hampore for 16 years, says the Eden Alternative improves the lives of elders by taking every opportunity to bring companion-ship, meaning and purpose, fun and spontaneity to the lives of elders, rather than just focusing on clinical care alone.

She explains that part of that is provid-ing pastoral and spiritual care to support residents and families of all faiths, cultures and ethnicities.

“Spirituality is about the things that bring meaning, purpose and value into people’s lives. It can be expressed in many different ways which are unique to each person,” says Christine.

“It can be a religious faith, or through hobbies, like art, or the feeling of giving. Often it’s a combination of things.”

Christine says residents and staff embrace all cultures, religions and beliefs at Kilmar-nock Heights Home.

“I work with residents individually because people of all different religions, cultures and ethnicities live here. Everyone is spiritual and my role is to befriend the res-

idents, listen to their life stories and be there to offer support and guidance.”

Christine says Kilmarnock Heights Home has changed remarkably since Enliven homes embarked on their Eden Alternative journey eight years ago.

“It’s made quite a difference to the home’s dynamic because residents have become much more involved,” says Christine.

“It’s very much a home here, not a facil-ity.”

Kilmarnock Heights Home is operated by Enliven, part of the not-for-profi t organisa-tion Presbyterian Support Central, and provides rest home and respite care as well as a popular day guest programme.

Holistic care at Kilmarnock Heights Home

Dear Ed, I would like to make some comments on the new disabled carparks outside the Island Bay Medi-cal Centre on The Parade. Previously they were angle parks and I was able to get out of the car and step onto the kerb immediately. Unfor-

tunately, these new carparks are situated closer to the middle of the road, and they are now parallel parking spaces. As a disabled driver, I am now in the position of having to open the car door and step out towards the middle of the road before

I can make my way to the kerb. This new arrangement has made what was a sim-ple straightforward action into a complex and rather dangerous process - all for the sake of a visit to my local doctor. Conversations with staff at the medical

centre indicate that other patients are facing similar diffi culties. How long, do you think, before a disabled driver is clipped by a car or bus coming along from behind?

Newtown Dental Surgery has been providing dental care for families at the Lychgate Centre for over 25 years.

New patients welcomeTo fi nd out more about us and our services go towww.newtowndentalsurgery.co.nz

OPENMon – Sat,

8.00am – 6.30pm*hours for each day varies.

Pain is one of the reasons people go to the dentist. Common symptoms of a painful tooth can be triggered by hot or cold foods and drinks. Heavy biting or grinding may break a tooth and cause it to hurt when you chew. Sometimes, when a fi lling falls out, you may have a throbbing ache.

Any injury to teeth or gums should not be ignored. If your teeth and gums are not treated in time, there can be a risk of getting an infection. If an infection is not treated, it can spread to other parts of the head and neck and cause serious discomforts. In rare cases it can even become life threatening. It is very important to always seek treatment for a dental injury and get injured teeth repaired and treated as soon as possible after an injury.

When To Call A Dentist? Our dentist’s advice is if it hurts, it’s an

emergency and should not be left too late. Prompt treatment improves the chances of saving injured or damaged teeth.

If you are aware of any damage to your

teeth such as chips or fractures, these should be treated as soon as possible. If they are not treated, it can cause more problems in the future. When you lose a fi lling or crown, even if you don’t have any symptoms, the tooth has lost its support and it could easily be-come damaged. Your teeth could break off in pieces or crumble, and you would need more extensive treatment. If you see your dentist right away, there’s a better chance he or she will be able to repair the damage more easily.

At Newtown Dental Surgery, we will always try to attend to any of our patient’s urgent dental problems as soon as possible or make other arrangements for our patients to be cared for.

Please note: Material provided by Newtown Dental Surgery in this article is provided for educational purposes only. You must consult a dentist regarding the applicability of any opinions or recommendations with respect to your symptoms or dental condition.

Beach management plan on the cards for Lyall Bay

LETTERS to the editor

Dear Ed, After waiting 10 minutes for my young son to be able to safely cross The Parade in Island Bay at the Humber St intersection, I can’t wait for the coun-cil’s improvements to The Parade to be completed. Not only will they encourage more cycling, they will also make it safer and easier for pedestrians and mobility transport users to get around our com-munity. I just hope that these columns

won’t be fi lled with letters from motorists complaining that they can’t travel at the speeds they do now. Instead I hope that they will celebrate the fact that our suburb is safer and more attractive for both families and older people within our community.

M Rodgers, Island Bay

Excited for improvements

Dear Ed, So pleased the seawall is being rebuilt, Not sure if it will be a deterrent for all the rats that the fi shermen of Island Bay see when down there early morning checking the tide etc., that head to the old

toilet at the park, ideally a crossing where the toilets are into the park would make it a lot safer and tidy up a rat infested area.

Barbara PattersonIsland Bay

Seawall deterrent for rats

Dear Ed, It’s interesting that Marion Finlay and Andrew Carman of Brooklyn wrote two very negative letters about the fi xing of the Island Bay seawall (Cook Strait News December 3) and both men-tioned King Canute. Chatting with people I know throughout Wellington I’ve found that there is a general consensus that the fi xing of the seawall was in fact long overdue and the main reason for the fail of the wall was due to a deliberate lack of maintenance by Wellington City Council.

I personally don’t know anyone that wanted to close The Esplanade to motor vehicles nor anyone that thought it was a good idea to allow the dunes to merge with Shorland Park. Finlay and Carman are entitled to their opinion as other’s are entitled to theirs. In this particular case democracy prevailed and the wishes of the majority of the community were heard.

Dear Ed, Re your December 10 issue, it was good to see your front-page article about real Christmas trees for sale here. I agree there's nothing so nice as a live conifer or even a branch from one, for Christmas, especially with the scent of pine or fi r as well. But if it's just a matter of long term economy and appearance, an artifi cial tree can also look very attractive. And like its various decorations of tinsel, glass, and plastic, it can be stored away

for use over many festive seasons as a traditional family heirloom. A real tree will usually become rubbish or fi rewood, as happens in one of Andersen’s fairy tales, I recall. Anyway, I’m glad there is a choice of trees over a wide price-range; so most households will be able to get an affordable tree, real or artifi cial, this year.

Residents and business owners of Ly-all Bay are encouraged to “step up and get involved” in what could potentially see the suburb’s beach better managed.

Bryce Pedersen was elected as presi-dent of the Kilbirnie, Rongotai and Lyall Bay Residents Association in October.

He said the residents association was in the process of working with the Wellington City Council to develop a beach management plan for the coastal community.

Over the winter, the ‘surfer’s carpark’ at Lyall Bay was damaged by storms, repaired and damaged again.

“The management of Lyall Bay is highly reactive. It is only looked after if things go wrong. There is no on-going day to day response for Lyall Bay.

“It’s not business as usual things only happen with the council when things go wrong. We need an on-going commit-ment to the management of Lyall Bay.”

Bryce said the Wellington City Coun-cil recently commissioned a contractor

to analyse issues at Lyall Bay Beach and provide some possible solutions. The report was presented to the association at a recent meeting.

“It was really interesting because he sectioned Lyall Bay into fi ve different zones. Each zone has its own particular issues and own solutions and remedies.”

Bryce said the contractors fi ndings had now been sent to council offi c-ers. Advice would then be given to councillors before a second round of consultation began in early February.

In the meantime, he encouraged residents and businesses in Lyall Bay to “step up and be involved”.

“We want people in each of the particular zones to have a view on their zones.”

The Kilbirnie, Rongotai and Lyall Bay Residents Association will have its next meeting on February 3 from 7.30pm at the Cockburn Chapel on Onepu Rd.

Anyone who would like to be involved in a Beach Management Plan for the area can contact Bryce Pedersen on [email protected] or through the association’s Facebook page.

Lyall Bay residents are encouraged to have their say when it comes to a beach management plan for the coastal community.

Christmas can be a season of great joy. It is a time of God showing His great love for us.

It can be a time of healing and renewed strength. Christmas is when we celebrate the birth of the Christ child.

God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world to be born. His birth brought great joy to the world. Shepherds, wise men, and angels

all shared in the excitement of knowing about this great event. They knew this was no ordinary baby.

The prophets had told of His coming hundreds of years before. The star stopped over Bethlehem just to mark the way for those who were

looking for this special child.

More than half of New Zealand-ers have admitted they wouldn’t mind un-wrapping a nice new pair of fresh socks on Christmas Day.

A study carried out by The Warehouse on 1027 adults, re-vealed 56 per cent of Kiwis would be happy to see a fresh pair of socks sitting underneath the tree, along with sleepwear and undies.

However, those wanting to splash out on their loved ones should look no further than vouchers and technology, with the items topping more than half of New Zealanders wish list.

Unfortunately 72 per cent of

those surveyed admitted to re-ceiving at least one Christmas present they did not like. Of those who said they had received a present they did not want, half said they would store it away somewhere and forget about it and 39 per cent said they would re-gift it.

The survey also revealed some interesting Christmas shopping habits.

Of those who took part in the survey, 37 per cent said they left their Christmas shopping until December and 21 per cent said they left it until the week before Christmas.

Christmas shopping truths revealed

Those surveyed said:56 per cent said they wouldn’t mind receiving socks for Christmas34 per cent said they found their partners most di cult to buy for, followed by distant relatives.72 per cent of those surveyed said they had received at least one present in the past they did not like.

Children from Worser Bay School have delved into their backyards to make this year’s school fair something special - and very local.

Using produce the children have scav-enged from their backyards and with a little help from local suppliers, chef and school mum Hannah Thornton has put together an amazing array of goodies to stock the popu-lar deli at the fair on Sunday, November 8.

“We really wanted to use as much local produce as we could as it came into season.

“The children and their parents have brought in lots, as have friends and family and Kim [Chin] from Miramar Fruit Supply supplied the rest.”

Hannah has assorted a tasty range in-cluding preserves, chutneys, mustards, cordials, kimchi (a Korean pickle), relishes and even a pizza sauce.

For those wanting an early start there are also Christmas cakes and mince meat for Christmas pies.

Burgers, dumplings, pizzas from the

school’s own pizza ovens, Thai fi shcakes and many other food stalls will be keep-ing everyone fed on the day.

The theme for this year’s fair is “Our Secret Garden”.

Worser Bay School principal Jude Pente-cost says this ties in well with the learning the children have been doing this year.

“Relationships are at the heart of our school and strongly refl ected in our cur-riculum. This year's inquiry, 'What and Who is in Our Backyard' has been full of rich learning experiences and provides a great link to the fair.”

Money raised from the fair will go towards various school projects.

In the past these have included help with digital technology, additional staffing, teacher professional development and the engagement of a writing specialist. Worser Bay School Fair - 168 Seatoun Heights Rd, Sunday, November 8, from 11am to 2pm, rain or shine. Some Eftpos available.

Array of goodies at local fair

Chef Hannah Thornton has used local, seasonal produce provided by Worser Bay School chil-dren, friends and family to put together a tasty array of treats that will be on sale at the school fair on Sunday, November 8.

Colgate GamesYoung athletes from Wellington and Wai-

rarapa are gearing up for next month’s 38th annual Colgate Games. The 2016 Colgate Games, New Zealand’s National Junior Athletics Championship for children aged seven to 14, has received more than 2000 entrants from up and down the country with 379 from the Wellington-Wairarapa region. Colgate New Zealand general man-ager John Garside said he was thrilled to see such a high level of participation. “The Colgate Games has been bringing sporting children and their proud parents together for many years.” He said the games would “give thousands of aspiring young athletes the opportunity to showcase their talents”.

Night of MilesMany of Wellington’s fastest athletes will

be starting the summer season at Newtown Park on Saturday at the annual Lifestyle Sports Night of Miles. The programme consists of a mix of children’s, senior and junior races, fun social events and serious ‘elite’ races. The highlights are the mile races which are only rarely raced these days and Santa Claus is also set to make a special appearance on the track. Spectators are welcome and entry is $5. All money raised at the meet will go to support Wellington’s Neonatal Trust, which supports families with premature babies. The programme runs from 5pm to 8pm.

Worser Bay School students soaked up the sunshine earlier this week when they got the oppor-tunity to go mountain bik-ing through the Miramar Centennial Reserve.

Around 45 children donned helmets and jumped on their bikes for the activity which took place on Tuesday morn-ing.

The activity was organ-ised by Adrian Armstrong, the former coach of the New Zealand downhill mountain biking team.

Adrian’s daughter at-tends Worser Bay School and he said after chat-ting to staff he thought it would be great to give children the opportunity to give the sport a go.

“It’s good to see a whole bunch of kids outside and in the local environment, on counci l approved tracks and getting to try

out mountain biking.”On Monday the kids’

bikes were checked and they were also taught basic skills, he said and added it was fantastic to have the chance to teach the young children moun-tain biking skills.

“It was great to see them all into it rather than sit-ting home on a PlaySta-tion. There was a really great mix of boys and girls too which was great.”

Adrian also thanked local business Burkes Cycles for their support on the day.

Worser Bay School prin-cipal Jude Pentecost said the activity fi t in perfectly with the school’s focus on well-being and resilience.

“We saw this moun-tain biking experience as a great fit with our wider goals. We want all children to have rich and varied opportunities.

“Our curriculum is not narrow.”

A group of around 45 children from Worser Bay School had the opportunity to mountain bike through Miramar Centennial Reserve on Tuesday.
