Jack Brackenridge Semple

Jack Semple is a virtuoso guitar player and performer whose musical interests are eclectic and wide-ranging, although he is often categorized as a blues musician. He began playing guitar when he was nine, and refined his mastery of his instrument through many hours of dedicated practice.

Jack is the youngest of six children who grew up on the family farm north of Regina. Largely self-taught, he began playing in various Regina-based bands in his teens before performing with the Lincolns, a funk and rhythm and blues band based in Toronto. After two years he returned to Regina, and has raised his family here. He and his wife Tara have three children, all of whom are active in music and the arts.

Jack tours regularly, and has released 10 solo albums, while also contributing to television and film soundtracks from his basement studio. He has a Gemini award for his soundtrack work on the television series Incredible Story Studio and a Juno award for Qu’Appelle, an album of roots music.

STUDENT AWARDSGOVERNOR GENERAL’S ACADEMIC GOLD

This award is to recognize the outstanding academic performance of a graduate student. The decision of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research Scholarship and Awards Committee was based on the quality of the thesis/exhibition, external examiner’s report, quality of the defense, course work, CGPA, publications and presentations deriving directly from the research done for the thesis/exhibition, and on awards achieved. The pool of applicants is all graduate students who have a thesis or exhibition deemed meritorious by the Examining Committee, and who apply for graduation at the Spring Convocation, or who graduated at the previous Fall Convocation. This year there were 38 students eligible for this competition.

Dr. Xiaoli Li convocated in October 2015 with a Doctor of Philosophy in Petroleum Systems Engineering.Dr. Tony Yang, her supervisor and professor in the Faculty of Engineering, stated that Dr. Li was an exceptional student which resulted in a thesis that will have a wide impact in her research area. Dr. Li has been the recipient of numerous graduate scholarships and awards, including being awarded a Government Award for Outstanding Students Abroad from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Canada.

Academically, Dr. Li graduated with an average above 90%. She consistently outperformed other students in her classes. Xiaoli’s supervisor notes that she was an “excellent PhD graduate student [...] with outstanding academic performance during her graduate studies.”

Just as noteworthy, Dr. Li has published 6 peer-reviewed journal papers, 1 conference paper and currently has 2 papers under preparation. These are the result of her research where she developed a new generalized methodology to more accurately determine the phase behaviour for solvents-assisted enhanced heavy oil recovery processes.

The external examiner for Dr. Li’s dissertation entitled “Phase Behaviour of Alkane Solvent(s)-CO2-Water-Heavy Oil Systems at High Pressures and Elevated Temperatures” was Dr. Ian Gates, Professor and Department Head, from the University of Calgary. Dr. Gates commented the following on Dr. Li’s dissertation, “The research is original and is a novel contribution to the body of knowledge or water-heavy oil and solvent phase behaviour.” He goes on further to say, “The degree of inquiry and the sophistication of the research [...] are excellent.”

The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is proud to claim Dr. Xiaoli Li as a graduate of the Faculty.

PRESIDENT’S MEDAL

The University of Regina President’s Medal is awarded at each Spring and Fall Convocation to a student receiving a first degree who has shown academic excellence as well as major leadership and commitment to extra-curricular activities while a student. The recipient this spring is Ms. Avnee Paranjape.

Ms Avnee Paranjape is graduating today with two degrees a Bachelor of Arts Honours major in English and a Bachelor of Science major in Biology, with a CGPA of 87.7% and as the recipient of the Faculty of Arts Dean’s Medal. In doing so, she exemplifies the University’s commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and adds to her impressive list of achievements. She has earned a place on the Dean’s Honours List every semester since her second year, completed an honours paper with a very difficult to earn 90%, and shared her findings at an international conference, alongside professors – a rare accomplishment for an undergraduate student. One of her instructors ranks her in the top 1% of students she’s ever taught in her two-decade career of teaching. In recognition of her accomplishments Avnee has received a major scholarship from the University of Toronto to commence studies toward a Master of Arts.

In addition to her impressive and significant academic achievements, Ms. Paranjape has also shown exemplary service to the university community since her first year. She has served as Treasurer of the University of Regina World Vision club, a judge for the 2012 Shumiatcher Cup debate, and for several years as a University Ambassador. Avnee has also been co-president and held two directorships with Engineers Without Borders, a role that brought her into conversation with local Members of Parliament to discuss Canadian foreign aid assistance. Her contributions to campus political life continued as lead organizer and moderator for the Get Out and Vote campaign, for which she organized three candidate forums.

Ms. Paranjape has devoted countless hours to enhancing Regina’s cultural life. She served as a board member for the Saskatchewan Book Awards and volunteered with the Regina Association of Middle Eastern Dance and the Regina Folk Festival. She has raised funds for important organizations including the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan, the Kidney Foundation, the Canadian Diabetes Association, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

FACULTY OF MEDIA, ART, AND PERFORMANCE DEAN’S MEDAL

Teresa Marie Puglia, graduating today with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Major: Film Production, Great Distinction, is the recipient of the Dean of Fine Arts Medal. The award is presented to a student graduating with a first degree, who has demonstrated both leadership and academic achievement.

An excellent student from beginning to end, Teresa made the Dean’s List her first semester (Winter 2012) and as well as her last, with a few more times in between. She earned many scholarships during her program as well. Not surprisingly, she graduates today with a program grade point average of 87.27%.

She was equally consistent as a student leader. Teresa progressed through film student society ranks from 2nd year representative to president, actively participated as a coordinator with the Living Skies Student Film Festival, and provided her expertise and enthusiasm to fellow students, the wider film community, and to young budding filmmakers!

Teresa has noted that she is part of the first class to complete their entire program “...knowing that the film industry in the province would be dramatically changed.” She determined to learn all she could from those around her, and give back as well, becoming an advocate for the industry, the art form, and her colleagues.

Her passion has definitely inspired those around her. Students, staff, and professionals want to be involved with her projects. Mark Wihak, Department Head of Film, has noted that he feels “...fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with her.” Gordon Pepper of the Sask Filmpool has praised her contributions as “truly impressive.” As such, we are delighted to award Teresa the Dean’s “Medal”, a hand-built ceramic sculpture that is part of the Sukanen Boats Series by University of Regina alumna, Barbara Goretzky.

W.A. RIDDELL AWARD IN MEDIA, ART, AND PERFORMANCE

The W. A. Riddell Award in Media, Art, and Performance award is awarded to a graduate earning her first degree who has demonstrated exceptional artistic merit as well as academic achievement. Shina Jane Hom, who is graduating with a Bachelor of Music Education Degree (Distinction), is today’s recipient. Ms. Hom earned an 88.83% average in her music courses – her area of artistic focus.

Shina’s commitment to her performance and teaching practice has been evident both inside and outside of the University. She is well-known in the Faculty as a dedicated and wonderful musician. Although a flute major who participated in Wind Ensemble and Orchestra, she also played clarinet in Concert Band and sang in the University Concert Choir.

Outside of school, Shina has been an integral part of the music ministry at her church for many years. She continued playing in the South Saskatchewan Youth Orchestra well into her degree, augmenting the musical development she was gaining at University. As a senior musician in that program, she also had the opportunity to mentor younger musicians. Along the way, she has done stints as a master class teacher, a conductor, a performer, and a volunteer with various groups who have benefitted from her talent.

We wish Shina all the best in her future endeavours. We know from experience that her future students and colleagues will feel blessed to have her in their midst.

UNIVERSITY PRIZE IN SCIENCE

The University Prize in Science is awarded at convocation to the most distinguished student graduating with a first degree from the Faculty of Science. Zachary Horvath is the recipient of this prize at the 2016 Spring Convocation. Zachary is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, achieving Great Distinction with a CGPA of 93.60%.

While studying at the University of Regina, he has received many scholarships in recognition of his academic achievements, including: Academic Gold Scholarship, Association of Regina REALTORS Inc. Scholarships, Dean’s List – Faculty of Science, Centennial Merit Plus Scholarship, Muriel E. Finlayson Undergraduate Computational Science Research Scholarship, and The Harold J. Leibel Family Entrance Scholarship (Campion College).

Outside of the classroom, he spent many hours working with students as a Supplemental Instruction (SI) leader. As part of being an SI leader, Zachary was required to attend the lectures of the courses and develop study sessions for the students. He led sessions for Chemistry 105 (Winter 2015), and Chemistry 140 (Fall 2015). When Dr. Kerri Finlay, coordinator of the SI program, was asked to comment on Zachary’s work with the SI program she stated: “Zach was always organized and reliable, and the students quickly learned that he was an extremely valuable resource to help them learn the course material.

Zach also always offered extra midterm and final exam review sessions for the students which were very well attended.”During the Winter 2016 semester, under the supervision of Dr. Murphy and Dr. Gerhard, Zachary worked on a President’s Teaching and Learning Scholar program entitled Development of a Responsive Online Homework and Quiz System for Large Enrolment Courses. He was the computer programmer on the project, and has designed an online Organic Chemistry Reaction Generator which will be used in a new, online, organic chemistry assignment program to be unveiled this upcoming Fall semester in Chemistry 140 (Organic Chemistry).

The Faculty of Science congratulates Zachary on his accomplishments and wishes him the best of luck with his future endeavours.

ACADEMIC REGALIA The academic regalia worn by the graduates and the members of the platform procession may consist of a gown, a hood or stole (worn over the shoulders), and a hat or mortarboard. All universities have distinctive academic dress for each degree conferred and, at times, for the disciplines in which the degree is awarded. Hence, the colourful variety of academic dress worn by members of the platform procession, who have graduated from dozens of Canadian and international universities, and represent particular groups.

With the exception of students graduating with a PhD and federated college students, graduates wear black gowns. PhD graduates’ gowns are scarlet with royal blue around the collar, down the front and around the sleeves. Students graduating from the University of Regina who have been registered through a federated college wear the following: red gowns for Campion College students, sky blue gowns for First Nations University students, and royal blue gowns for Luther College students. Serving members of the Canadian Forces or Canadian Police Forces may wear their dress uniform without an academic gown, and wear a hood corresponding to the degree they are receiving. At today’s ceremony, the dean of their respective faculty formally hoods students. The University of Regina also permits members of the Platform Party to hood graduates of their immediate family.

HONORARY DEGREES REGISTEROn June 6, 2004, at a Special Convocation ceremony held to confer an honorary degree on Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, the University of Regina began the tradition of having the honorary degree recipients sign an Honorary Degrees Register. Made of dark green leather embossed in gold with the University of Regina crest and lettering, the book was designed by Brenda Righetti and Bev Liski, and was handcrafted by J.L. Perkins Bookbinder Ltd.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE OF THE UNIVERSITYThe University of Regina operates under the terms of The University of Regina Act. Convocation is composed of the Chancellor, the Senate, all graduates of the University of Regina, all graduates of the University of Saskatchewan at Regina, and such other classes of persons as the Senate may from time to time determine. Graduates of the University of Saskatchewan, as defined by The University Act, 1968, may become members of Convocation of the University of Regina by notifying the Secretary in writing. Convocation meets twice annually, in June and October, unless there are extraordinary circumstances.

The Chancellor is elected by the members of Senate, holds office for three years, presides over Convocation, confers degrees and is ex officio Chair of the Senate and a member of the Board of Governors.

Senate is the University’s “window on the world.” It is concerned with the academic welfare of the institution and has a variety of duties and powers. Most of the broader issues of academic policy within the University are reserved for Senate’s approval. In another role, it acts as an ultimate court in academic affairs. The membership of Senate includes persons, ex officio, by virtue of their offices. Convocation elects another fourteen members of Convocation to the Senate. Students registered in the university elect six students of the University to Senate. In addition, any professional society, group or organization in the province that Senate believes contributes in a significant way to the social, economic and cultural welfare of the province may be represented on Senate.

The Board of Governors consists of eleven members and is responsible for overseeing the administrative and business affairs of the University. It ultimately has authority in all matters related to the raising and spending of University funds, and the acquisition and management of University property.

Council is the senior legislative body on academic matters. Its membership includes administrative officers, all Deans and directors of academic programs, all members of the teaching staff except sessional lecturers, and a number of student representatives. All matters of substance related to the academic affairs of the University must be considered and approved by the Council, as well as matters of academic discipline.

The Executive of the University of Regina Council (Executive of Council) has been empowered by Council to act on its behalf in all matters with the provision that requesting a special meeting of Council may challenge a decision of the Executive. Executive of Council membership is devised as a proportional basis of the academic composition of this University.

Disciplines that are related to one another in the broader areas of teaching are, for purposes of administrative and academic planning, brought together into Faculties, of which there are currently ten. Each Faculty is headed by a Dean; formal membership includes the Dean and the teaching members of the various associated disciplines. The Deans are recognized by The University of Regina Act as being the chief executive officers of their respective Faculties and are directly responsible to the President, through the Provost and Vice-President (Academic). Subject to the statutes of the Senate and the University of Regina Council, each Faculty has charge of all matters of scholarship in its disciplines and programs.

UNIVERSITY OF REGINA ALUMNI ASSOCATION AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCESince 1990, the University of Regina and the University of Regina Alumni Association have together honoured outstanding faculty members in the areas of teaching, research, and service. In 2013, the program was expanded to include the category of graduate research mentorship. The following five faculty members have distinguished themselves amongst their students and peers and have been selected as this year’s recipients of University of Regina Alumni Association Awards for Excellence:

Gordon Asmundson — Award for Excellence in Graduate Research Mentorship

Described as a “transformational leader” and “archetypal mentor” by students and colleagues, Gordon Asmundson has successfully led many University of Regina psychology students through their graduate research.

Asmundson is an accomplished researcher and his many honours include receiving the Saskatchewan Centennial medal and being inducted as a fellow in the Royal Society of Canada, the highest honour a researcher can receive. His work in the areas of anxiety disorders, chronic pain, and post-traumatic stress disorder, just to name a few, have made him an influential global thinker in the field of mental health. More than 35 graduate students have benefited from Asmundson’s mentorship as both a graduate supervisor and thesis committee member. His students have received

tri-council funding, been published in respected peer-reviewed journals, and attended top-ranked international conferences, helping to secure Saskatchewan a prominent place on the global map of psychology research.

One strong mentorship quality that Asmundson’s students repeatedly cite is the laboratory environment he creates and maintains at the University of Regina. One student notes, “In a discipline which is infamous for competitive and uncooperative interpersonal and professional interactions between students, Gord has implemented a system which breeds collaboration, cooperation, and mutual respect.” The lab’s trademark high morale is due not only to Asmundson’s positivity, but also to the peer-mentorship system he has established, building strong relationships, a collaborative environment, and future leaders in the discipline.

The Alumni Association Award for Excellence in Graduate Research Mentorship focuses on the impact of the candidate’s mentorship on his growth and development as a mentor, the development and growth of his mentees as future scholars and researchers, and the contribution of their shared scholarship and research to the lives of other students and academics who witness and cite their work.

Raymond Blake — Award for Excellence in Research

Named by colleagues across the Canadian scholarly landscape as a “leading historian,” “credit to his profession,” and “accomplished scholar,” historian Raymond Blake is known for not only the depth and influence of his research, but also for his ability to collaborate with others and form interdisciplinary partnerships.

Blake has written and edited 14 books, working with major university presses, and he has several other books currently in process with the University of Toronto Press. As many of his academic colleagues note, the gold standard for historical research is the publication of monographs, and these works are typically the culmination of years of painstaking archival research. The publication of so many books—alongside many articles in scholarly journals—is an extraordinary achievement.

The quality and content of Blake’s research is also noteworthy. Some of his scholarship illuminates the history of federal-provincial relations and enhances our understanding of the evolution of social welfare programs in Canada. By focusing on issues such as equity, inclusion and democracy, Blake has been an influential force on the discourse of the public good, and his research has been important to policy-makers. Blake has demonstrated a commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and research, having collaborated with political scientists, economists, lawyers, and sociologists, among others.

Blake is also one of a very few researchers at the University of Regina to be awarded a Social Science and Humanities Research Council Insight Grant. This flagship funding program for humanities and social sciences researchers is a prestigious honour that speaks to Blake’s importance and accomplishments as a researcher.

The Alumni Association Award for Excellence in Research focuses on the impact of the candidate’s research in his/her discipline, as well as on the public good.

Alec Couros — Award for Excellence in Teaching

Known as a gifted and dedicated instructor and a strong leader, Alec Couros has been inspiring students in the Faculty of Education and beyond through his innovative approaches to learning and his engaging subject matter. While on sabbatical in 2012-13, Couros created and delivered a “Massive Open On-Line” class focussed on technology and education. Describing himself as an “open educator,” Couros takes teacher education online and makes it available around the world. In recognition of these types of pedagogical approaches, Couros was awarded the University of Regina Teaching Award of Excellence for Innovation in Teaching in 2015.Couros’ dedication as a teacher is evident in the ways his students react to his classes. The Dean of Education notes that his teaching evaluations are consistently excellent, and many of his students submit unsolicited comments to the Faculty to show their

appreciation for his innovative teaching. Known as a dedicated instructor who “gives tirelessly of his time to support others,” Couros is “a reflective teacher, visionary, and leader seeking to continually improve his practice, his knowledge, and the experiences he creates for undergraduate and graduate students.”

Couros’ teaching is known and valued beyond the University of Regina. On average, Couros delivers over 20 keynote sessions per year to other universities and faculties of education, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education, and school divisions around the world. So respected is Couros’ expertise that the Ministry invited Couros to create digital citizenship guidelines to be used throughout the province in support of teachers and students in their use of technology and social media. Couros is a true visionary leader in his field.

The University of Regina Alumni Association Award for Teaching Excellence recognizes sustained excellence in leadership and innovation for undergraduate teaching and learning at the University of Regina.

David Gerhard — Award for Excellence in Teaching

Department of Computer Science professor David Gerhard has been kindling the curiosity of students across disciplines and generations for the last twelve years. Known across the University of Regina campus and beyond as an engaging and innovative instructor, Gerhard is attuned to the needs of his students and takes direction from the class itself when designing a course and presenting the material. Gerhard consistently emphasises the practical applications of computer science, asking his upper-level students to focus on implementation-heavy projects and provide classroom demonstrations. Gerhard’s teaching further reaches into the community through his Continuing Education classes at the University’s College Avenue campus. In these classes, Gerhard has taught community members—often senior citizens—how to use Facebook and other social media, as well as iPads and mobile technology.

One of Gerhard’s most notable achievements lies in his ability to cross traditional disciplinary boundaries and marry the worlds of computer science and the creative arts. Gerhard made fundamental contributions to the design of creative technologies curricula at the University of Regina. This cross-disciplinary approach to teaching incorporates technological skill in the development of systems for the creation of artistic and interpretive works, and it gives context and history to the design and development of creative practices. For the last five years, Gerhard has collaborated with Media, Art, and Performance faculty members to develop a minor in creative technologies for computer science students and a new concentration in the computer science degree program. An associate member in the Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance, Gerhard co-teaches courses with music and creative technologies faculty and supervises interdisciplinary graduate students.

The University of Regina Alumni Association Award for Teaching Excellence recognizes sustained excellence in leadership and innovation for undergraduate teaching and learning at the University of Regina.

Roz Kelsey — Award for Excellence in Service

Roz Kelsey’s career as a Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studiesleaves no doubt that she places an emphasis on social justice and embodies the idealof as one who serves.

Since 2014, Kelsey has worked tirelessly on a remarkable violence against women prevention campaign that has grown to become a powerful social movement known as Man Up Against Violence™ (MUAV). While the campaign began in the classroom, it quickly grew and spread across the University in the form of speakers, film presentations and discussions, and other large events involving multiple academic and administrative departments. The MUAV events have been called “thoughtful,

informative, creative and engaging,” and the University’s Director of Security and Operations notes that this community-centred initiative has helped her security team “provide a safe and welcoming environment for the campus community” by, in part, “chang[ing] the way we think about sexual assault and violence against women.”

The MUAV movement challenges deeply held mindsets about masculinity and works to inspire men, particularly male athletes, to accept their role as advocates for the prevention of violence in our communities. MUAV spends considerable time focusing on how unhealthy constructions of masculinity play a role in domestic abuse and various other forms of violence. The Dean of Kinesiology and Health Studies remarks, “It’s a revolution of thought led by a strong female leader with a team of empowered young men. That’s more than special. That’s extraordinary.”

The University of Regina Alumni Association Award for Service Excellence recognizes sustained excellence in leadership by the candidate to promote and provide awareness of the university and her discipline to the public.
