about our
CEREMONY
Academic Regalia
On Convocation Day, University members and their guests wear special attire based on a tradition that dates back as long as seven centuries ago. The academic costume, also referred to as academic “dress” or “regalia”, had its origins in the medieval European universities. The regalia were devised to distinguish academic persons as doctors, licentiates, masters, and bachelors.
There are many variations of academic dress. The hood, gown, and in some cases the special hat worn by an individual are determined by the style of the university where he or she receives a degree. The colourful gowns and hoods of the universities from across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and several other nations of the world are worn at Lakehead University today.
The academic dress chosen by Lakehead University is fashioned after that of the University of Oxford, the oldest English-speaking university in the world. The robes worn by the officers of the
WELCOME TO LAKEHEAD UNIVERSITY’S 51ST CONVOCATION CELEBRATION!
University – the Chancellor, who presides at convocation, the President and Vice-Chancellor and the Chair of the Board of Governors – are all of the Oxford cut and trim. Each has its own distinctive colour. The colourful gowns worn by the individuals who are receiving honorary degrees are of the same design as are the black gowns worn by the student candidates.
The ritual at convocation reflects the medieval custom that anyone in a university could wear a gown, but a hood was the symbol of a degree. Students who have met the University’s academic requirements (three, four, five, six or seven years of study in particular subjects) wear the symbol of their status as holders of a Lakehead University degree. Lakehead University’s bachelor’s and master’s degree hoods are distinguished by a one or two inch colour border which indicates the degree acquired (i.e. white for Arts, gold for Science, blue for Education, burgundy for Nursing, etc).
The Mace
During the processional and the recessional, the Marshal for convocation carries the Mace, a silver wand which is a traditional symbol of the University’s authority. This mace was given to the University by the Alumni Association in 1971. It bears the University’s motto “Ad augusta per angusta”, Achievement through Effort.
Convocation is a traditional ceremony during which the University officially grants the degrees and diplomas earned by its students. The word “convocation” means “calling together.” It is a ceremonial meeting of the entire University community.
GREETINGS FROM THE CHANCELLOR
GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR

As we laud what you have accomplished at Lakehead, we look ahead to the next 50 years that you will make your own as proud, successful ambassadors of Lakehead University.
I congratulate each of you and your families for all the effort and support that have made today a memorable moment to cherish.
Best wishes,
Dr. Derek H. Burney, O.C.ChancellorLakehead University
Long before most of you began dreaming of what you might achieve, Lakehead University opened its doors and began opening minds like yours to possibilities.
Fifty years later, over 55,000 Lakehead alumni around the world celebrate their achievements in their jobs, their hobbies, or families. While Convocation is a time to celebrate academic achievement, today I join your professors, families, and friends in celebrating you, your achievements, your next 50 years, and beyond.
Everything you are and everything you learn shapes what you do, where you go, and who you are. You chose to push yourselves and test your resolve. You overcame per-sonal challenges, remained focused, and, today, you reap the reward of your determi-nation and commitment.
I congratulate you all on what you have achieved as students at Lakehead University. As we celebrate all that you have done to get here, Convocation also marks the next step in your exceptional lives - an achievement preceding many more - and one that we celebrate, together.
Congratulations,
Dr. Brian J.R. StevensonPresident and Vice-ChancellorLakehead University

GORDON LIGHTFOOT Doctor of Music
Gordon Lightfoot is an indelible part of the Canadian national spirit and regarded as perhaps the most prolific and greatest Canadian singer-songwriter of all time. Born and raised in Orillia, Lightfoot made his performing debut at St. Paul’s United Church at the age of five. He went on to achieve international status.
This year Lightfoot celebrates 50 years of hit song making and international recording success. He has recorded 20 albums, has five Grammy nominations and 17 Juno Awards. In 2012, he was honoured for his role in defining the folk-pop sound of the 1960s and ‘70s with his induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The music of Gordon Lightfoot has had a powerful impact, with many of his songs recorded and performed by some of the world’s most renowned recording artists including Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley and Barbra Streisand.
In Canada, Lightfoot has been decorated with the Governor General’s Award and the Companion to the Order of Canada Honour of Merit. He is a member of Canada’s Walk of Fame, The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.
Described as a national treasure, Gordon Lightfoot is a cultural icon whose time-defying style and legendary hits have made him one of Canada’s most anticipated live performers. His classics, such as Canadian Railroad Trilogy and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald have contributed to, and captured, the Canadian spirit.
Locally, Lightfoot was inducted into the Orillia Hall of Fame in 1971 and in 1997, was recognized with the renaming of the main theatre of the Orillia Opera House. He continues to demonstrate his pride of his roots in Orillia and has generously supported the local community through performances and donations over the years, including the Orillia Opera House, Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, St. Paul’s United Church, and the Mariposa Folk Festival.
Honorary
DEGREESThe University confers “honorary” degrees which symbolize the highest honour that can be conferred upon an individual by the University. An honorary degree may be awarded in recognition of scholarly or creative achievements or distinguished public service to the country or region. They are awarded to individuals who have been designated by the University’s Senate, its senior academic governing body, as deserving special honour.
At Convocation, the degree is awarded honoris causa, or “for the sake of honour.” A hood is also given to the recipient and it may be worn to any academic affair. Recipients of these degrees become honorary alumni of the University and they may affix, after their names, the abbreviation of the degree.
This year, Lakehead University is proud to honour the following exceptional individual:
ROBERT LAMB When it comes to a successful major accomplishment, there is sure to be a skilled orchestrator leading the charge. This was certainly the case with the development of Lakehead University’s Orillia campus and the person leading the way was Robert Lamb, Lakehead Orillia’s 2015 Civitas Award recipient.
As the Manager of Economic Development for the City of Orillia from 2002 to 2009, Lamb was responsible for the development and implementation of projects to support economic development and quality of life in Orillia. The establishment of Lakehead University was one of his major projects. “I lived and breathed Lakehead University for much of my time with the City,” said Lamb.
From making the initial call to Lakehead’s President Dr. Fred Gilbert in 2002 to arranging for the purchase of the Horne family property, to advising on the hiring of Lakehead Orillia’s first staff members, Lamb was responsible for the orchestration of developing Lakehead’s campus in Orillia.
As lead negotiator for the university project, Lamb worked closely with Mayor Ron Stevens, the Economic Development Committee and members of the Mayor’s University Task Force to ensure a successful outcome for the project. The result was the opening of the downtown Orillia campus in just over 18 months from the time formal discussions began between the City of Orillia and the University.
Lamb went on to become the Manager of Economic Development at the County of Simcoe, where he continued to champion the development of Lakehead Orillia and ensured that it became a key part of the County’s economic development strategy.
Currently, Lamb is the Chief Administrative Officer/Deputy Clerk with the Township of Tay in Simcoe County and continues to be involved in the growth and development of Lakehead University. He is a member of the President’s Advisory Council on Economic Development (PACED) and a proud parent of a Lakehead student.
“Our vision was to do something different at Lakehead Orillia – to create an exceptional environment for learning – and I can see through my daughter’s experience that we are realizing this vision. The atmosphere for learning at the Orillia campus is truly one that allows students to excel.”
Lakehead University
CIVITAS AWARDThis year, Lakehead University honours:
CONVOCATION 2015Lakehead University8
The Board of Governors of the University recognizes individuals who have contributed to the growth, development, welfare, and well-being of Northwestern Ontario, Simcoe County and of Lakehead University. This is done by the conferring of the title Fellow of the University. You will recognize University Fellows by their familiar blue gown with white velvet epitoge or scarf.
This year, Lakehead University honours:
fellows of the
UNIVERSITY
ANGELO ORSI Fellow of the University
Angelo Orsi has been as passionate a supporter of Lakehead University as he has been for the City of Orillia. Whether addressing Lakehead students on campus or citizens on the street, his conviction resonates while he makes everyone feel welcome in this community.
Without Orsi’s support, there simply would not be a Lakehead University Orillia campus. As one of the founders of this initiative, his commitment was key to the campus’s early success. His ongoing advocacy as the Mayor of Orillia set the stage to have the County become an ongoing supporter of the University. His personal contribution resulted in the naming of the ‘Orsi Family Learning Commons’ in Simcoe Hall.
Outside of the Lakehead Orillia campus, Orsi is an exceptional, community minded individual who is extremely committed to the growth of a healthy, vibrant City of Orillia. Since making this area his home more than 20 years ago, he has played a significant role in shaping Orillia’s future by providing jobs, housing, commerce, and support - both personally and financially - through various leadership roles within the Orillia District Chamber of Commerce, the Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, and the Orillia District Construction Association.
Orsi’s ongoing support through generous philanthropic activities has continued to promote the growth of this community in numerous ways within organizations such as YMCA Orillia, the Orillia Museum of Art and History, the Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital, and Georgian College.
Angelo Orsi’s ongoing dedication has assured the longevity and prosperity of Lakehead University and the citizens of Orillia. Goals have been achieved and futures made more promising thanks to his passion and hard work.
