With the world moving to the internet, it has now become to way to do things. I will mail out at times late in the month if and only if I have the funds to print and pay the postage. That means there may be some months where the newsletter is by Internet only. In the upcoming year we plan to begin publishing on the internet only. I am sorry it has come to this but, it has. I know these are drastic measures but the CPA has suggested them to me in order to continue so that we are forced to put on a subscription charge. The Foundation for Women’s Cancer Announces Course in

Honor of Cindy and Don Melancon

The Foundation for Women’s Cancer is pleased to announce that the Friday, March 23, 2012, in Austin, TX Ovarian Cancer Survivors Course is being held in recognition of the contributions to women with the disease by Cindy and Don Melancon. Cindy lost her life to ovarian cancer in 2003 after having been named the Foundation’s Public Service Award recipient in 2002. Cindy Melancon, a registered nurse, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1992 and 1 ½ years later started CONVERSATIONS!, which her husband still publishes with the help of their daughter Angela. And, it is not your average newsletter—it is more like an informal, chatty correspondence between friends. But the inspiration it brings to its readers is its hallmark. Cindy used her post-diagnosis years to help others. She started CONVERSATIONS! because she knew of no way to connect with other women living with ovarian cancer. After sixteen months of searching, she ran an ad in the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship “Networker” that read: “Wanted: contact with someone with the same disease.” Ten women responded and their correspondence laid the groundwork for CONVERSATIONS!, which now reaches over 5000 women in over 20 countries. Cindy worked with Gail Hayward to help get the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) started in 1995 and with Gail came up with the color Teal for the Ovarian Cancer Ribbon. In 1997 Cindy was a founding board member of the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance (OCNA) and was Vice-President until her Passing. Cindy also worked with Dr. Barbara Goff in her pioneering research regarding ovarian cancer symptoms. “It is a great honor to have the opportunity to recognize the contribution by the Melancons to women living with ovarian cancer,” said Dr. Vivian von Gruenigen, chair of the Foundation for Women’s Cancer’s Education Committee. In addition to an anonymous donor who wished to honor the Melancons, the Foundation is grateful for course support from Eisai and Morphotek. For more information about registering for the Austin course or future courses, visit the Foundation for Women’s Cancer Web site, foundationforwomenscancer.org. All courses are offered free-of-charge. If you are interested in sponsoring a survivors course, please contact Dina Zambon at 312.658-0751, or [email protected].

Counterfeit Version of Avastin in U.S. Distribution

FDA Statement Issued: Feb. 14, 2012 FDA sends letters to 19 medical practices about counterfeit product and other unapproved cancer medicines The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning health care professionals and patients about a counterfeit version of Avastin 400mg/16mL, which may have been purchased and used by some medical practices in the United States. Avastin is an injectable medicine used to treat cancer and is administered to patients in clinics, hospitals, and doctors’ offices. The counterfeit version of Avastin does not contain the medicine’s active ingredient, bevacizumab, which may have resulted in patients not receiving needed therapy. In a related action, FDA has issued letters to 19 medical practices in the United States that purchased unapproved cancer medicines that may include the counterfeit Avastin. The counterfeit version is labeled as Avastin, manufactured by Roche. Roche is the company that manufactures Avastin approved for marketing outside of the United States. Roche conducted laboratory tests that confirmed the counterfeit version of Avastin. Packages or vials

may be counterfeit if they:

• are labeled with Roche as the manufacturer

• display batch numbers that start with B6010, B6011 or B86017

• The only FDA-approved version of Avastin for use in the United States is marketed by Genentech (a member company of Roche). The FDA-approved version does not include the Roche logo on the packaging or vials. In addition, Genentech’s FDA-approved version of Avastin vials and packaging have a 6-digit numeric batch number and expiration dates in a 3-letter month and 4-digit year format (e.g., JAN 2014). Genentech’s Avastin products are safe and effective for their intended uses. The 19 medical practices in the United States purchased unapproved cancer medicines and, potentially, the counterfeit Avastin, from Quality Specialty Products (QSP), a foreign supplier that may also be known as Montana Health Care Solutions. Volunteer Distribution in Gainesboro, Tennessee is a distributor of QSP’s products. FDA has requested that the medical practices stop using any remaining products from these suppliers. FDA cannot ensure the safety or efficacy of any of these unapproved products. The list of the 19 medical practices is also in the following link: http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/ucm291960.htm Click here for The full FDA statements, including pictures of the counterfeit product.

If a healthcare provider has any product in their possession that they suspect may be counterfeit, they should immediately contact the FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations (OCI) at 1-800-551-3989 or at the website: www.fda.gov/OCI. To report suspect counterfeit products and other suspect unapproved products obtained from Volunteer Distribution or QSP/Montana Health Care Solutions or other sources:

• Call FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations (OCI) at 800-551-3989, or • Visit OCI’s Web site (www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/email/oc/oci/contact.cfm2), or • Email - [email protected]

Health care professionals and consumers are asked to report adverse events related to the use of suspect injectable cancer medicines to the FDA’s MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program either online, by regular mail, by fax, or by phone. Health care professionals and consumers can either:

• Complete and submit the report online: www.fda.gov/MedWatch/report.htm3, or • Download form or call 1-800-332-1088 to request a reporting form, then complete and return to the

address on the pre-addressed form, or submit by fax to 1-800-FDA-0178.

Alone

They wait with me as I wait for news .

I hear what is said, but think it can't be true ;

knowing alone I must go through .

They wait with me as treatments begin, never knowing when I may give in,

give up the battle I'm in.

Alone I face the end results.

Alone to wonder with my thoughts.

Alone at the end we all must be, old friends and family to welcome me,

guiding me to a brand new life.

GRAND FINALE!!! At this time of year we live with one foot in winter and the other stepping through the door of Spring. For a few

days, we are just sure Spring has arrived and we throw our coats in the car’s backseat, roll up our shirt sleeves, and get a

sunburn! Then suddenly Old Man Winter gleefully pounces on us with a rip-roaring blizzard. I can remember many a March day when a gorgeous sunny morning with a high of 60 turns into blowing snow and low of 10 before noon!

Because Cindy and I usually did not listen to the radio or watch TV, we were always surprised when the weather was about to turn. But we discovered a great truth...We really enjoy the warmth and sunshine when we were unaware that a bone-chilling snow was just over the northern horizon. Somehow knowing bad weather is on the way spoiled our pleasure in the wonderfulness of the good weather.

This year, in early February, we have purple and white crocus and golden daffodils blooming in the front yard, then we get 3 inches of snow. These wonderful plants were planted by Cindy and I in the late 80’s and early 90’s. They

don’t know ...and they don’t care...that winter probably isn’t finished with us yet. They just know that today and this

minute is worth celebrating! They are lucky...they can’t know.

Those of us involved in the fight against cancer are often more aware of the “blizzards of life” than we want to be. From Cindy’s cancer, I have learned that it is easier to enjoy the moment when you refuse to mix in the fears about what tomorrow might, or might not, bring. It takes conscious effort and is never easy. Like any muscle, practice does become more automatic.

Focus on the laughter of today, the friends of today, the joys of today, the spring flowers of today, and all the

other large and small wonders of today. Cherish them like the “gold” they truly are!

Cherish Today like Gold!

Celebrate Today!
