Robert Warren Rushing (1928 – 2017)My Dad, Bob Rushing, passed away this year at the age of 88. He packed a lot of living in those 88 years. Life was hard in the 1930’s, but life got even harder when he lost an eye from being hit in the head with a baseball bat. He was not unfamiliar with the world of blindness since his sister, Flo, lost her sight at an early age.

The biggest change in his life came when he met my Mom at the Oregon School for the Blind. He was a student at OSB because there was an expectation he would lose sight in his one good remaining eye. He said she was the cutest girl at the school, so, of course, he would chase her. After they married their lives became dedicated to working, socializing, and enriching the lives of other blind individuals.

In the 1950’s, they first learned about the Oregon Council of the Blind and joined the very active Southwestern Chapter, and in 1960 they moved to Portland where they joined the Multnomah Chapter. In 1973, my Dad helped the Oregon Council of the Blind take on the ambitious project of hosting the ACB national convention in Portland. That was an enormous task on everyone’s part.

Several years later my dad had the opportunity to work for the Oregon Commission for the Blind as a Business Enterprise Representative. His experiences with the blind community, and then actually becoming a blind individual (even for a few years due to cataracts) gave him the awareness, determination, and respect to interact with and guide other blind individuals in their efforts to become successful business operators.

In 1986, my parents moved to Salem where they joined the Willamette Chapter. My Dad retired in 1990 and shortly after he agreed to become the treasurer for the American Council of the Blind of Oregon, which, much to his surprise, led to an 18-year stint as treasurer. He was instrumental in acquiring several gifts and bequests for the organization, and then established an endowment fund for the organization. Today, that endowment is worth $340,000.

In his 80’s, as he once again lost his vision to macular degeneration, his last big challenge was trying to save the Oregon School for the Blind from demolition. The historic Howard Hall was the focus for many ACB of Oregon members over the last several years. It was very disappointing for him that this battle was lost, but he gave it his best shot.

We gave my dad a great send off to Cowboy heaven last May which many of you were able to attend. Mom and I thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers and for the wonderful gesture of dedicating this year’s convention to Bob Rushing.
