GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Technical recommendationsCalculation of air flow rates for kitchen hoodsThe calculation of air flow must satisfy two requirements:

• ensure the transfer of the direct and indirect heat released from the cooking appliances to the outside;• allow the evacuation of the polluting substances produced by cooking after having picked them up and filtered.There are different methods to calculate air flow extraction rates but we have adopted the official method, because only applying the official method, the extraction hoods, also called "traditional", take advantage of the extraction speed calculated in relation to the hood surface. This method consists in calculating the flow rate as a function of its passage speed on the surface of the hood.The operating speed required for the evacuation of polluting substances and especially of heavy particles is minimum 0.3 m/s and maximum 0.5 m/s.This is the parameter to be adopted when choosing our control units. In addition, we recommend applying a tolerance of 10% -20% more than the total suction of the control unit in relation to the maximum suction values calculated for the hood.

Activated carbon purifiers

The activated carbon purifiers are the machines that eliminate odours from the kitchen hoods; they can also be applied in the industrial field of the chemical substance treatment if other adsorbent substances with a specific chemical reactivity are used instead of the activated carbon.

How the activated carbon purifiers workThe activated carbon purifiers include different stages of filtration, gradually improving the particles in order to capture progressively all particles of different sizes. In the beginning, the particles go through the first filter, class G4 for coarse dust, passing then to F7 pocket filters for fine powder, and then being cleaned by the activated carbon, whose aim is the fine odorous particles.The filters offer a certain resistance to the passage of air, so it must be forced through them with a fan, placed downstream in relation to the filters and located inside the same filter box or within a different arrangement if it is required by the dimensions.In principle, the slower the air flow is inside the filters, the better the filtering is and the lower the power expenditure is. In order to optimize the work of the fan, in addition to keeping the filters clean, it is therefore recommended not to over-use the filter unit, i.e. not to let it suck in a quantity of air higher than the design one; this will end up in quick wearing of the fan’s engine, absolutely not leading to a better functioning of the fan.It is also advisable to limit the amount of sucked-in air to the minimum required, by placing the hood on the wall and, if possible, closing it on the sides.

Fan

The double suction centrifugal fan is constructed with robust hot-dip galvanized sheets. The forward-bladed fan is balanced statically and dynamically. The power is provided by a three-phase electric engine, connected to the fan by belts. The complex is connected to the external structure via anti-vibration feet. The fan must be adjusted with an inverter.An activated carbon purifier is made of a structure of extruded aluminium profiles P40 and nylon corners. The sides of the box are buffered with 25 mm thick sandwich panels, made of aluminium sheets (thickness 0.5 mm) and polyurethane foam infused between the two sheets.

CUSTOMIZED SOLUTIONS

Sometimes the specific dimensions require customized solutions. Although it is preferred, for the reasons of simplicity, to follow the standard configuration, it is possible to construct activated carbon purifiers with different shapes or with a fan separated from the filtering group.

ALUMINA SUPPLEMENTARY FILTRATION

There is the possibility, as a customized set-up and without alterations in the standard dimensions, to insert one or more alumina flat filters (depending on the size of the purifier) between the F7 filter and the activated carbon housing. This device helps to enhance the anti-odour treatment and to eliminate the humidity present in the fumes.The cells containing alumina are of a flat type, with dimensions 592 x 592 mm and 20 mm thickness; they can be opened, like the cartridges, to allow the replacement of the active substance.Alumina is aluminium oxide, Al2O3, which, like activated carbon, is a porous substance. It is impregnated with slow-reacting substances, such as potassium permanganate (KMnO4, with oxidizing power) and iron hydroxide (FeOH3, weakly caustic substance); these substances help to dissolve the odorous particles. The hygroscopic property of alumina contributes, together with the fleece and fabric filters, to reduce the moisture levels in the fumes; in extreme cases, a condensation drain can be set up in the purifier.Due to its high cost, alumina is not usually recommended to be used instead of activated carbon in the cartridges, but by adopting a flat filter as pre-treatment together with activated carbon, you can achieve a good compromise without adding too much of overall resistance and therefore having to install a fan of increased capacity.On the photo: alumina flat cell. - Electrostatic filters

The electrostatic filters present a new range of filters in A, B, C, D classes (UNI 11254), which can be easily used in new and/or existing systems without additional costs of adaptation.

The main features are:

- standardized dimensions in 592x592, 592x490, 592x287,490x592, 490x490, 490x287;

- integrated electronic circuit, completely watertight;

- multipolar connections for mains supply (230V - 50 / 60Hz) and for connection in series;

- self-centering system that is able to compensate for the construction imperfections up to 3 mm of error;

- indication of the filter’s status that can be visualized on the filter by means of an incorporated LED and on the outside via appropriate accessories.

Performance:

-high filtration efficiency for 0.3 ÷ 0.4 micron particles, comparable to class H (UNI 1822);

- excellent solution against outdoor pollution from PM10, PM2.5 and PM1;

- high reduction of the bacterial charge in the air;

- excellent protection for heat exchange batteries and air distribution channels.

In comparison with the traditional filtration, the FE system allows:

considerable energy savings due to low load losses;

constant filtration efficiency up to a load of 600 g of fine dust.The FE system is an alternative to traditional pocket filters and is designed to facilitate the use of electrostatic filters. Its adoption in general ventilation systems and in particular, in the air-conditioning sector, does not require changes in the constructional and dimensional characteristics of the system.Due to its multipolar connection system, the mounting and dismounting of the FE model electrostatic filters takes place by a simple sliding on the filter holder frame of the air conditioning unit.
