Abstract

Increasing the size of urban density housing in areas characterized by operating systems urban facilities built in different historical eras, based on different design rules, more or less oriented protection seismic contribute to an increased vulnerability of urban infrastructure as a whole, and of its important components exposed to a major seismic event. On the other hand, the rise of Mega-cities poses the issue of protection against earthquakes of the cities lifelines. Very recently, the use of seismic metamaterials offers possible solutions for the growth of the urban resilience through adequate structuring and design procedures, respectively by including the possibilities of seismic wave control.

Romania is one of the European countries with a high seismic risk and the infrastructure of the major urban areas (Iași, București, Bacău) can be heavily impacted by major disasters of seismic type. The Romanian civil engineering, architects, building equipment and urban engineers were continuously provoked, needing to adopt/adjust various efficient and appropriate, pro-active measures within the seismic risk management in urban infrastructure. Identifying the class of metamaterials, adequate to control of the impact of seismic waves on the urban infrastructure, can offer the optimal/desired solutions.

This paper presents the theoretical basis of the process of depicting the impact of seismic waves on the urban infrastructure’s components, possible control mechanisms that can be ensured by metamaterials, along with the presentation of current state of the art of research in this field.
