Techie Corner

By John Janes

Techie Corner

Techie Questions from Members Do you have any specific questions about technology or something specific you would like to see cov-ered in this column? Send your suggestions, questions, and comments to the club at [email protected]. We will try to address them in future issues.

First a note on Windows 10 1809 (2018 Fall Edition): Microsoft has fixed the bugs that plagued the origi-nal release that they withdrew. The fixed version became available on November 13 along with all the November monthly patches. So, if you have automatic updates enabled on your machine you will likely see this update being done.

It is holiday season and of course there are lots of scams going on. Just be very careful of emails that you receive to be sure they are from someone you know and something you expected. Along those lines I saw an article about things you can do to stop hackers from accessing your bank accounts. Here are 5 tips for you:

1. How can I start any list of tips without talking about passwords? Make sure you have a very strong password. General rules are that it has random letters (uppercase and lowercase), numbers and symbols, eight characters or more and you have a unique password for every account.

2. Two-factor authentication is coming into play with most companies. This is where you must provide something like mother’s maiden name or some other challenge that you don’t think the hackers could find out about you.

3. Keep track of all your pennies in all your accounts. Watch for anything happening that you did not au-thorize.

4. Know your credit score and watch for anything suspicious. Watch for things like credit card accounts that you did not open. Report any activity to the credit bureaus like Experian, Equifax and Transunion. Remember you can get one free report every year.

5. And lastly you can freeze your credit. If you freeze your credit hackers will have a hard time getting your personal information. If you do this remember you can’t get it either unless you unfreeze your account. The federal government starting this year mandates that you can freeze your credit for free by calling the three credit bureaus, Experian, Equifax and Transunion.

I would like to wish all of you a very Happy Holidays and always remember practice safe computing.

CRITICS CORNER

Radio Gals

By: Nancy Dostal

A group of 79 Retirees Club members recently enjoyed lunch and a play, Radio Gals, at the Masonic Heritage Center. Radio Gals is a razzamatazz musical comedy set in the 1920s when radio ruled the airways and small stations thrived. Music teacher Hazel Hunt receives a trans-mitter as a retirement gift and station WGAL was born in Cedar Falls, Arkansas. Hazel broadcasts from her front parlor with her “all-girl” orchestra, “The Hazelnuts.” However, Hazel’s broadcasts over local airways are not always so local due to her habit of impinging on other frequencies, like NBC’s, attracting the attention of a federal radio inspector who’s intent on shutting down WGAL. It turns out though, he has a fine tenor voice, plays a mean accordion and quickly becomes enchanted by the “Hazelnuts.” Although the comedy in this story was greatly exaggerated, the actors did a good job in their roles. A mixed review - some thought it was silly, some thought it was great!

Book of Mormon

By: Jo Merrill

There were 56 retirees club members and guests that attended this musical. This was much different than I thought it would be. Basically it is about Mormons trying to convert a village in Uganda and combatting a local war lord. Africa isn't the smiles-and-sunshine place the missionaries expected. The villagers have no hope. They have no water and they have no medicine to cure their AIDS. The phrase “Contains Explicit Language ” was putting it mildly. The good part of the play was the absolutely brilliant cast and the music and dancing were wonderful. Some people loved the show and some were offended.

Mary Poppins

By Linda Hauck

Another Disney classic performed at the Artistry in Bloomington. This was one of my favorites at this venue. Mary Poppins’ character was perfection in this role. It’s the story of two kids who wish for a kinder, sweeter nanny to rescue them from the revolving door of strict caretakers. They get their wish when Mary Poppins come to their home. Though it is never explained where Mary really comes from, it is said that she lives outside of time, meaning that she apparently does not age. She is seen sitting on a cloud above London. Mary Poppins is described as being "practically perfect in every way." As a nanny, she is fairly stern, but also kind and nurturing. She is shown to possess various magical abilities including the ability to speak to animals and transport herself and others to various places. However, afterward, she will deny any usage of these powers and her many voyages and adventures, presumably to keep them a secret from the public. This show was a “Spoonful of Sugar” for 71 retirees. A very enjoyable afternoon for all ages.

Triple Espresso - a highly caffeinated comedy shines the spotlight on three hilarious performers as they reminisce about their ill-fated big break. Recycling Tips Have you ever tossed an item into a recycling bin that you weren’t 100 percent sure was recyclable? Many items are recyclable, but some are problematic at recycling sorting facilities. They can cause damage to equipment, or contaminate and lower the value of other materials.

Our recycling seminar on October 30th contained information on what to recycle and what to toss. Quit “wishing cycling” by refreshing your knowledge of what’s accepted in your home recycling program.

And remember, when in doubt throw it out!

All recycling haulers accept these items Top 5 things to leave out of recycling

Soda & food cans (don’t crush) Plastic bags

Mail, office & school papers (staples ok) Tanglers (hoses, chains, etc.)

Cracker & cereal boxes Shredded paper *

Paper towel/toilet paper cores Batteries **

Cardboard & boxes (flattened) Food and liquid

Milk & juice containers (rinsed)

Glass bottles & jars

*Bring confidential documents to Staples, Office Depot or Fed Ex to be shredded. Bring already shredded paper in a paper bag to the Recycling Zone in Eagan.

**Drop-off all types of batteries at The Recycling Zone, 3365 Dodd Road, Eagan, MN. (651-905-4520)

***Check website for times and directions, co.dakota.mn.us

This is for Hennepin and Dakota counties.

Check with your hauler to make sure these items work with their service.

The Winter Boots (Anyone who has ever dressed a child will love this)

Did you hear about the teacher who was helping one of her pupils put on his boots? He asked for help and she could see why. Even with her pulling, and him pushing, the little boots still didn't want to go on. By the time they got the second boot on, she had worked up a sweat. She almost cried when the little boy said, 'Teacher, they're on the wrong feet.' She looked, and sure enough, they were. Unfortunately, it wasn't any easier pulling the boots off, than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as, together, they worked to get the boots back on, this time on the correct feet. He then announced, 'These aren't my boots.' She bit her tongue, rather than get right in his face and scream, 'Why didn't you say so?' like she wanted to. Once again, she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off his little feet. No sooner had they got the boots off when he said, ‘They're my brother's boots.’ But my Mom made me wear 'em today. Now she didn't know if she should laugh or cry. But she mustered up what grace and courage she had left to wrestle the boots BACK onto his feet again. Helping him into his coat, she asked, 'Now, where are your mittens?' He said, 'I stuffed 'em in the toes of my boots...' She'll be eligible for parole in three years.

A look back in time

It is not often that we hear from our fellow CDC workers in other parts of the world. But this month we received an email from Jean-Guy Pharand with links to info about CDC products and people in Canada. If you are interested in reminiscing a bit, visit our Website where this information has been added by Steve Adkins. Enjoy - It is worth the time.
