He has represented Suffolk for 3 years and has been ranked in the top 50 players in his age group Nationally. Mary Edmonson - Horse Riding. She is part of the Junior GB squad and was one of the youngest riders to ever complete for GB in her event. Abigail Elsom - Hockey. She has represented Suffolk at every level available as a junior and has now been selected for the full ladies county side. Joe Jacobs - Speedway. He is currently racing for a professional team nationally and finished 4th in the British U15 Championships last year. Lauren Ramsey - Ballroom and Latin Dance. She has won 2nd place in the Stars for the Future Ballroom event. Katy Sealy - Athletics. She has won 5 events at the County Athletics Championships and was 4th in the National U20 Combined Events Championships. Freya Simpson - Ballet. She has been awarded distinction in Grade 6 RAD ballet exam. Owen Smith - Swimming. He has represented the County for two years and is the current regional breast stroke champion in his event. Zak Strowger - swimming. He is competing at County level in swimming for Deben Swimming Club. Sam Truman - Golf. He is a member of the Suffolk U16 golf academy and has been invited to play in the National Schools Championships this year. David Youngman - Hockey. He has represented Suffolk at U15 level and is part of the East Hockey development squad. Ed Youngman - Hockey. He is currently playing 1st team Hockey for Ipswich in the National League and is part of the Suffolk men’s team.

Suffolk Schools Sailing Regatta 2009 - winners for the 6th year in succession: FHS took first and second place in the Fast Handicap with Tim and Charlie Linsell in their Lark winning and Ian Davidson in his Laser coming second. In the Toppers Harry O’Riordan came second, Chris Game third and Elspeth Orme sixth. FHS sailors in the Slow Handicap fleet consisted of: Faye Gosling,

These students chose to go on a special scheme to develop their learning skills. They set targets with their parents and tutors and had to meet these over a six week period, as well as focusing on specific targets in lessons These are the ones who successfully completed the scheme.

Congratulations to all who took part and these year 11, 12 and 13 students who attained bronze, silver or gold awards.

Year 3 students from Rendlesham, St Mary’s, Kyson and Hollesley Primary Schools were invited to attend a morning of hands-on, active Mathematics at Farlingaye High School. Throughout the morning, 103 students were able to build and race their own balloon powered cars; take and carry out mathematical analysis of photographs from around the school grounds; learn how to make and tessellate their own interesting shapes; learn about and test the variables affecting how far and how accurately a foam rocket can be fired; and try to solve and find the solutions on the ‘Island of Answers’ (a mini treasure hunt).

Each High School holds its own competition with students choosing a favourite book instead of a subject; they answer up to 20 questions in 2 minutes. Winners go on to regional and then the All Suffolk Final organised by the Schools Library.

The Carnegie Medal is awarded each year to the best children’s book of the previous year. The short-listed books were read and discussed by our Carnegie Shadowing Group and then the students voted for their favourite book.

Library Helpers Many thanks to our Sixth form helpers who worked well especially with new books and with the “Booked up” scheme. Jamie Smith, Georgie Underwood, Tiffany Jay and Eleanor Davies. Our younger students completed a library assistant training programme and will be ready to help regularly in the library next year. These included: Bethany Sarginson-Batley, Bryony Porter, Sophie Fisher, Stuart Blackie, Francesca Hillman, Jess Tatham, Katherine Newson, Rose Bennett, Rebecca Settle, Jasmine Leck, Hannah Downie, Rhiannon Stopczynski, Simone Butler-Mayer, Luca Dervenkar, Thomas Patrick, Grace Lucas, Tigerlily Bradford and Pip Richards. Many of these students helped throughout the year – particu-larly with the author visits and Open Evening.

Bookmark Competition The annual Bookmark competition this year was to promote the Woodbridge Children’s Book festival and the students produced some great bookmarks. Winner – Sarah Lumley 2nd – Abi Jacobs, Katie Macfarlane, Fabian Marshall Tierney and Jigishaa Mougdil-Joshi.

This group chose new magazines to be stocked in the library and were involved in a number of activities to encourage others to read.

Individual Achievements beyond school These are the ones we know about - please don’t forget to tell us of your successes outside school: Ben Phipps, ex Year 13 student, has been awarded a four year scholarship at Imperial College,

London to study Maths and Computer Science. He was also one of two winners of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Scholarship in the Year 2008.

Florence Blackmore has been offered a place on the DanceEast Academy. She is one of only 35 students who were eventually chosen from across Essex, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

Rosie Daniell has been selected to represent the British Young Riders Dressage Squad, selected for the Pony Club Area team and has also qualified for both the Preliminary and Novice Regional Dressage Elementary level.

Gemma Day, 10R, has won first place in the WS Hairdressing Academy ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ Level 1 Hairdressing competition.

Hannah Daley, 10A, has been attending an Arts Award course at Northgate Arts Centre and has reached the assessment stage of her ward.

Sarah Lumley 7F, was overall winner of the 2008 National Year of Reading competition to design a bookmark. The standard was so high that the following students also had their bookmark printed and received prizes. Abi Jacobs 7G, Fabian Marshall-Tierney 7G, Katie Macfarlane 7F and Jigishaa Moudgil-Joshi 7G.

Alice Lincoln has been successful in gaining a place on the Children’s Youth Board Project. This project exists to advise the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) on issues that affect children and young people in England.

Joe Jacobs secured 4th place overall in the British Under 15s Speedway Championship. Sixth Form Band, Containz Nutz, won a competition to record three tracks at Summerhill

Studios. The band members are: Will and Jon Arundel, Sam Brown, Dan Card and Charles Law. Josh Hardy stood to be a member of the Youth Parliament for Suffolk. Katy Sealy, who is ranked 33rd in the whole country for women’s heptathlon of all ages. She is

one of only six Suffolk athletes who have a national ranking! Congratulations to Rosie MacPhail, 11F, who has passed her Grade 7 Ballet with Distinction. Well done to Alice Bevan, 10F, who has come first in the last three regional trampolining

competitions she has entered. Well done to Jon Stammers, 9Y, who has been selected for the Ipswich Academy of Tennis and

is ranked No. 7 in the county in the U14 age group and 13th in the U16 group. Freya Simpson, 7Y, achieved a Distinction in her Grade 6 RAD ballet exam and a Merit in her

Intermediate Foundation exam (the first of the RAD’s vocational graded examinations). Daniel White 8E, has been awarded Players’ Player of the Year by Woodbridge Rugby Club. Trampolining: Alice Bevan 10F, came first in the last 3 competitions in the Eastern Region and

qualified up to the next grade. Thomas Mason 9F has played basketball for the Ipswich Tomcats U14 this year who play in the

national league, and has been successful in the trials for the Ipswich Tomcats U15 squad. Amber Cook, 8H, has been selected into the final squad of players who will represent Ipswich

Bobcats U14 Girls’ Basketball team in National League Competition next season. Matt Jackson has won the Bowler of the Year award for the under 13 age group at Kesgrave

Cricket Club. 20 mile row at Cambridge - Hannah Shire and Em Chittock won their finals and Kate Carson and

Chezzi Keig got through to finals. Edward Miles, Year 7, received an award from the boys’ brigade based at Wickham Market for

doing really well in his first year in company section and for doing well at summer camp. Bonnie Shand passed her Grade 4 saxophone exam in June.

Individual Achievements beyond school cont. Students involved in the Suffolk touring production of ‘Fatal Fame’ put on by Oskar Foxtrot Productions in the summer: Rebecca Holfield (10R), Joe Brown (Yr 11), Sam Brown (Yr 13), Simon Crowe (Yr 13), Shaun Tatham (Yr 13) and Charlotte Tatham (Yr 11). Sarah Anderson (7F) has achieved Grade 1 Theory of Music, Grade 1 Piano and Grade 2 Piano within

the last 1st 12 months. Natalie Nickells (7G) passed grade 5 Ballet exam (RAD) and also had a part in a professional

production of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” at Norwich Theatre Royal. Laura Bradley (9F) achieved Grade 2 Piano with Merit. Julia Payne is new to the school in year 12 but her outside achievements deserve to be acknowl-

edged: Duke of Edinburgh Silver award, Grade 7 Merit flute and grade 7 piano. She helped to raise £1,500 for schools in Kenya by organising a 24 hour musicathon and was selected for Suffolk Young Strings and played violin in several concerts including Snape Maltings. Lizzy Freeman 7N, was awarded a certificate of merit as a talented young writer and after entering

Young Writers Mini Sagas competition has learned that her entry, The Silent Night, will be published in an anthology called Mini Sagas Eastern Region.

Anna Brockbank has achieved Piano Grade 6 and Flute Grade 5. Chris Bradshaw came 4th in the East Schools Decathlon. He has also represented the Saxons

(combined Ipswich Harriers and Chelmsford AC Team) in the National Junior League (U20). Chris has also represented Ipswich Harriers in the Southern Men’s League and the East Anglian League.

Jessica Robinson passed her Grade 1 piano with Merit. Jon Russ has obtained his Grade 6 trumpet exam with Merit and has also auditioned with success

for the Martlesham Brass Main Band where he plays second cornet.
