Women’s Auxiliary Hello Ladies,

Welcome to 2019 hard to believe! I hope you all kept well and Father Xmas was good to you all.

November we had our usual chat and chew and as always plenty of both. Thank you ladies for the lovely morning tea.

We finalized our year with a lovely Xmas lunch, thank you to everyone who put it all together for us. No complaints so always a good sign. After lunch everyone received a gift from Father Xmas. Thank you John Howe for being a great Father Xmas.

Unfortunately I have filed the names of the Xmas raffle winners in a safe place so they will appear in next month’s Scuttlebutt when I remember that safe place.

Thank you everyone for supporting the raffle! It was very successful and many thanks to Helen Harrington for doing the

buying and I believe she has sent in some photos of the winner collecting the stocking. Great job Helen!

Anyone interested in joining the Auxiliary please come along to a meeting. We resume on Monday 25th February at 10.30am.

Well ladies keep well and stay cool and look forward to catching up with you all on the 25th February at 10.30.

CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PARTY - SUNDAY 9TH DECEMBER 2018Approximately 80 children and 150 parents and grand parents attended the annual Children’s Christmas Party. This time we had two new jumping castles, the Spider-Man Castle and the Pirate Percy Jumping Castle. Both had a jumping area with slides. The Mr Whippy van was there with his ice cream and fairy floss. The two face painters were kept busy painting various colours and designs on the children’s faces and hands. Many children enjoyed the balloon artist who made different toys out of the balloons. Kobi the clown together with the Chrissy Holly show again proved to be the most popular items for the children. Light refreshments were served throughout the Party together with soft drink and orange juice. At the conclusion of Kobi the clown with her live animals we heard the ringing of Christmas bells. Who was making the noise, none other than Father Christmas carrying his sack of presents. It was very pleasing to see the look of happiness on the face of each child when their name was called out to receive a present and lollies from Santa.

The RSL staff did a great job in looking after all those that attended. Chantelle who was in charge of the staff said they had just as much enjoyment as the children.

A special thank you to Chris Lambert (Santa) for his 41st consecutive occasion.

I seem to always have one regret. Last year I forgot the lollies. This year in Scuttlebutt it said “the party is for Primary School children only”. It was meant to include all pre school children as well.

This year the Children’s Christmas Party is on Sunday 8th December 2019. Please put this date in your diaries and check Scuttlebutt for more details in our November issue.

Arthur Merryweather Treasurer

Right: A real disappointment – Santa failed to attend our Christmas break-up, but he did send one his favourite elves.

ISOLATED PERSONS PROGRAM CHRISTMAS PARTY 2018As our final function of the year, the Welfare Department again hosted the IPP Christmas Party for our local Aged Care Facilities and isolated people within our community. This year we had approximately 120 people attend the luncheon including RSL Members, residents and carers from 9 aged care facilities, and our wonderful volunteers. Our guests were treated to a lovely 2 course meal, and entertainment from Susie Corell. WHITEHORSE DAY CLUB TRIPTramboat Cruise to Williamstown - Nov.2018On arrival at Victoria Harbour at Docklands, we boarded the tramboat. Another group had tried to muscle in on our booking as they had missed the Portarlington Ferry, but our 2 crew members refused to let them board. Fortunately the tramboat is fully enclosed as the sky looked ominously cloudy at times. Morning tea was served by Lisa as we sailed downstream along the Yarra River through the Port of Melbourne, past Swanson Dock under The Westgate Bridge out into Hobson’s Bay where we approached Williamstown. We docked at Gem Pier where HMAS Castlemaine is berthed. This historic corvette/minesweeper is maintained by a crew of volunteers. Gem Pier was completed in1839 and is named after a ferry which took passengers between Williamstown and Port Melbourne.

Back onboard the tramboat after a stroll around Williamstown, Melbourne’s first Sea Port where signs of its historic maritime past are still evident, everyone tucked into their fish and chips. Nick, our captain, continued with the commentary as we sailed back to Docklands. The few spots of rain did not deter some of us from going on the top deck to get a better view of the activity in the docks.

Afternoon tea was enjoyed at the Shrine, then we headed back to Box Hill. Just as well we decided to return home slightly earlier as a storm soon rolled in. We had been blessed by the “Weather Gods” once again.

Bowls SectionWell here we are already well into the New Year! I hope everybody had a nice Christmas. It seems like a while ago now. I also hope you all enjoyed the start of 2019 and that the year is filled with peace, health and happiness for everyone.

Our Bowls section has restarted the Tuesday, Saturday and night Pennant season with 5 games (approx.) remaining to go for season 2018-2019 before the Finals start. Some teams may still have a chance of competing in - good luck to those that do!

Our club Championships are just about completed.

Here is Winner Heather Arnel, with runner up Brian MacDonald, being congratulated as recipients of “The Presidents Cup” a very prestigious award, cough cough, alongside Helen Harrington, Bowls President, and Championship organiser Peter Houghton. Hennie Pasveer is our Ladies Singles Club Champion, and John Howe our Men’s singles Club Champion. Finals of the Pairs and 100up are still to be completed. Good Luck and Congratulations to all for participating.

Our Christmas break up for 2018 was held on the Deck. Here we have Kay Creek and Helen Harrington in some fancy eye and head gear! 3 Fabulous Christmas Hampers were raffled, a lucky dip full of nonsense was a bit of a laugh, as were Trivia and bingo.

A little different break up, but a pleasant afternoon was had by all.

Social bowls is still being run with games starting a little earlier during the hotter months - 1 Twilight Game, of 21 ends being included once a month. Having lights now for Night Pennant is proving a great success. Many thanks to the Match Committee.

We will keep bowling on! Anyone interested in joining the bowls section please enquire at RSL Reception for further contact.
