Beware of where and how you point your camera. Lagosians are very sensitive to this and you might attract the attention of “area boys” (gangsters), who’ll demand you pay them for being in their region.

Eat suya (grilled, seasoned meat), which is available in most restaurants and on the sides of streets.

Visit the rebuilt Afrika Shrine (Adeleye St, Ikeja) of iconic

musician Fela Kuti, where you can catch his son, Femi, performing on Thursdays and Sundays.

Skip the malls and head to a market, which is better stocked and offers cheaper fruit and vegetables. The Oke Arin Market (Holloway St, Lagos Island) has great food.

There’s no shortage of galleries in Lagos. Visit the Centre of Contemporary Art (9 McEwen St) in Yaba,

the African Artists’ Foundation (54 Raymond Njoku St)in Ikoyi and Freedom Park (Hospital Rd, Lagos Island) on the island.

Visit the Jazz Hole, which is easy to miss, as it’s tucked away on Awolowo Rd. It’s a sanctuary for lovers of jazz, vinyl and books, as well as the best place to get a decent coffee outside a hotel.

  > 1 South African-born Ina Venter, Managing Director of SurePlatform, tells us about her lifestyle and business in Lagos, to which 2 she and her family have relocated

How did you come to live in Lagos? My husband was offered a contract to help out a company in the telecommunications sector for three months.

1:VM We were newly married. The contract was then <? extended to six months, then nine. Now we’ve been < here almost 12 years! Have you always lived in Lagos? Yes. We’ve enjoyed it here. It’s culturally different. The people 6?O4X;YM are friendly and I love the weather, which is never cold. When we arrived here, we thought we’d never

Where:;Y BB have children, but two years later, I fell pregnant with Brendan (who’s now nine) and, three years Z8G;:8W9M899later, with Zanica. I then decided that I needed

Di to be back in a working environment, so I started

SurePlatform, a company which helps people wanting to start businesses in Nigeria, but unsure of how to do so. We assist them with transfers and

the logistics. www.sureplatform.com 3

g What would you advise visitors to Lagos to do and

% see? There’s a great deal to do, which is why they

0 call it the “city of excellence”. During the days, you can enjoy boat rides. There are also a lot of clubs, 2including for golf and yachting, which shouldn’t YELLOW CHILLI / be missed. Outside the city there are conservation

66 centres where you can go walking or hiking, <& C while the beach life is also very big, especially on Saturdays. There are endless restaurants offering the best Indian, continental or Italian cuisine – you # name it and you can find it. My favourite is Villa D Medici, which has been here for years and has a ED great ambience. (1 Alhaji Babtunde Jose St, Festival

It’s vibrant, 33 very busy and very big, numbering about 30 000. We have a Facebook page where you can post

5 0 ' Would you consider returning to SA? I think this is home now. We have a house in Langebaan, SA, but 3',

we call it a holiday home. However, SA is still my DE0, native country, where my heart is. 1 5 , =/I What advice would you offer people visiting Lagos? Come open-minded. Leave your preconceptions Where:=65 4N about Nigeria behind, because the people are >4 Z8G;W9GG9MGMGK fantastic, friendly and welcoming. The way they

care about children and the elderly is amazing. GAL
