This course will help you identify body language and provide tools to respond in ways to take control of situations. ALLIED HEALTH ACADEMYaFh admInIstrator traInIngIf you are interested in opening up your own adult family home, this course meets the Washington state DSHS requirement for Adult Family Home providers. The course includes video and instruction on the inspection processes required for licensing. Topics include: Business (Readiness, Personal Worth, Feasibility, Marketing, Fiscal Operations), Laws and Regulations, Human Resources, Residents’ Rights, Assessment and Care Planning, Medication Administration, Social and Recreational Activities/Nutrition, Building Inspection and Initial Inspection. nursIng assIstant certIFIed program — new!Train for an exciting and rewarding career in 4 weeks. Highline Community College Nursing Assistant program combines classroom theory, skills laboratory and clinical experience to prepare students to take the Washington State licensure exam for a Certified Nursing Assistant. In sixty hours of classroom theory, students will review personal care skills, vital signs, charting, nutrition, body mechanics, infection control, resident rights, communication skills, CPR and HIV certification. Certified Nursing Assistants work in a variety of medical settings such as hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living communities, adult family homes, hospice and dialysis centers. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take the state certification examination.

Requirements* Applications must be submitted in-person to the Continuing Education department (Bldg 99, Rm 101). Applications are available at https://nursingassistant.highline.edu/ or at the Continuing Education front desk. Students must provide evidence of a clean Washington State Patrol criminal background check, submit proof of a negative TB test (within the past year) or current CXR/symptom check (within the past 2 years) and complete a reading/math assessment test (administered at the Continuing Education office). toeFl™ Highline Community College through Continuing Education and the Welcome Back Center offers a ten week hybrid TOEFL™ preparation course. We meet once a week, face to face. Students are responsible for writing assignments and additional reading homework outside of class. We are offering a two part study plan to allow for more guided practice. Along with test-specific skills and strategies, students will have the opportunity to increase vocabulary and reinforce grammar. We do not teach grammar as students are expected to have previously studied English formally or informally. Medical professionals, university bound students and any others who need to take the TOEFL to achieve their personal and professional goals are ideal candidates for these programs. taekwondo class — new!Taekwondo offers something that no other sport can. It’s a “learning style” athletic activity that develops a combination of balance, coordination and flexibility while instilling a sense of self-discipline that carries over into all aspects of life. Beginning students learn physical fitness, stretching and the basics of taekwondo; blocks, punches, kicks, strikes, stances, footwork and forms. They practice kicking, punching and blocks on strike paddles and on kicking shields. Monday classes focus mainly on forms and basics with some self-defense techniques. Wednesday c lasses focus on Olympic style sparring drills and Olympic style sparring with full protective gear. Both classes include physical fitness training and stretching. Beginning students who do not desire to practice full contact sparring can experience lighter touch sparring or sparring drills. Instructor Bios: Masters Scott Craig and Susan McCall have been teaching martials arts, self-defense and physical fitness for 30 years together. Both have black belts in karate, taekwondo and extensive training in hapkido, grappling, wrestling, kickboxing and weapons. They have graduated 80 students to black belt level. The ratio of students to instructor is roughly 4 to 1, which allows students to receive hands-on training. The physical training to be covered will include fighting stances, kicks, punches, strikes, elbows, knees, target areas, releases from grabs, ground work and weapons. The mental training will involve developing a strong voice, confident eyes and powerful body language. holocaust: vIctIms and oppressorsThe rise of Nazism remains one of the most studied phenomena in modern history. This course will examine the causes and consequences of the Holocaust. Events of the Holocaust will be examined, from the rise of Hitler to power, through the adoption of anti-Semitic laws and the implementation of the Final Solution. The Nazis used the tools of modern civilization (technology, bureaucracy and science) to persecute, alienate, transport and finally murder millions. Learning objectives: ability to identify and analyze the causes leading up to the Holocaust; the historical facts of the Holocaust; ability to identify, explain and discuss major issues, events and personalities during the period under study; appreciation of the universal lessons of the Holocaust; the ability to look past stereotyping and ignorance to ascertain the truth about the definition of a minority group. The class will be taught by Rick Harkavy, who is currently the rabbi of Bet Chaverim, a synagogue located in Des Moines.
