Financial AssistanceContinuing Education Fund Some modules of the programme have been included in the list of reimbursable courses under the Government’s Continuing Education Fund (CEF). Eligible applicants will be reimbursed 80% of the module fees, subject to a maximum sum of HK$10,000, on successful completion of the modules. Education LoanSuccessful applicants are eligible to apply for the Non-means Tested Loan Scheme (NLS) administered by the Student Financial Assistance Agency (SFAA) of the HKSAR government. Financial Assistance Scheme for Post-secondary Students (FASP) and Non-means-tested Loan Scheme for Post-secondary Students (NLSPS)The Coventry BIT programme is one of the eligible full-time courses under FASP and NLSPS administrated by the Student Financial Assistance Agency (SFAA). The award has been offered in Hong Kong for a number of years under the title BA (Hons) Business Information Technology which has now been changed to a BSc degree to better reflect the nature and content of the programme.

Information Systems DevelopmentThis module builds on basic ideas of information systems and equips the students with a more detailed knowledge of the main techniques employed in the object-oriented approach to Information Systems Development. It also extends the student’s knowledge of relevant Internet technologies, such as Internet security, web development, distributed objects and client/server architecture.

Management and Organisational BehaviourThis module aims to provide an understanding of the practical and professional issues associated with organisational behaviour and how these relate to effective management practice. The module demonstrates the application of behavioural science within the workplace and emphasises the role of management as a core integrating activity. It will provide an understanding of the human aspects of the management of change.

Digital Technology and SocietyThe aim of this module is to examine the local and global impact of e-commerce, the Internet and digital technology on individuals and groups of individuals in the society.

Project ManagementThis module introduces students to project management and provides a foundation for developing project management skills, both human and technical, that will enable them to work on a variety of projects, primarily with a computer or knowledge based component.

ProjectThe project module will be a major individual study at Honours level in a subject related to the degree award. It serves as the main vehicle for integration of the various programme modules and provides a focus for practical application of the knowledge gained on the programme.

Introduction to Research MethodsThis module introduces students to the process of business research and decision making. It provides an understanding of the practical and professional issues associated with the analysis, design and choice of solutions to business problems, and demonstrates the need for formal planning and management in the development of business projects. The module is intended to underpin final stage honours projects and will include an introduction to both quantitative and qualitative research methods.

Current TechnologiesThis module aims to cultivate in the students an appreciation of the fundamentals, nature and scope of current and emerging technologies, such as the Internet, multimedia and E&M commerce. It also explores the application of such contemporary technologies and their position and impact in the market place as well as in the society.

Business Management StrategyThe aim of the module is to provide the students with an understanding of strategic decision making and a capability to contribute to the process of business strategy making. The module critically examines techniques available to companies aiming to develop a sustainable competitive advantage in their industry.

M-Commerce ApplicationsThis module seeks to provide the students with a basis for advising an organisation on the feasibility of its mobile commerce strategy. It focuses on introducing to the students to the nature and scope of mobile commerce applications, mobile commerce terminology, technical issues and business contexts. Strategies, characteristics and techniques for developing and deploying mobile commerce applications in organizations are also explored.

Curriculum OutlineAdd-vantage Module (English)Students are encouraged to build upon their knowledge of English so that they can justify their opinions, answer unpredictable questions, develop or explain complex points, explore the differences between language use and meaning in context, and use the language in a creative and flexible way, producing fairly long and complex structures.

Add-vantage Module (Effective Communication)The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of the principles and techniques which will assist them to enhance their personal communication skills, and to require them to analyse and apply appropriate communication strategies. Participants will be given the opportunity to practice these skills in a safe environment and reflect on current performance and future development needs.

The ProgrammeTo meet the needs of today’s competitive and commercial world, this programme blends together two major disciplines: Business and Information Technology. Business tools and methodologies, organization and managerial skills are built into the curriculum which leads to effective deployment of IT for business success.

Programme Aims● a solid understanding and skill in the analysis, design and

development of information systems in the contemporary world of enterprise-wide systems and web-based business models. A combination of technical skills in the deployment of m-commerce systems and an understanding of the IT services industry is provided;

● practical knowledge and skills in the use of information technology and quantitative methods to facilitate innovative solutions applied to business problems;

● preparation for, or development of, a career in the field of project management, IT consultancy, database administration and business support;

● the assimilation of problem-solving methods and their application to the analysis, design, and implementation of solutions to problems in commerce and industry;

● the development of technical skills that enhance the productivity of a business organisation; and

● enhancement of lifelong-learning skills and personal development to contribute to society at large.

HKCAAVQ Accreditation

In June 2010, the BIT programme was successfully accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic & Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ). This means that our programme can be entered into the Qualifications Register (QR) for recognition under the Qualifications Framework (QF) (www.hkqr.gov.hk). The BIT programme is recognized to reach the standard of QF Level 5 which is equivalent to the standing of bachelor degrees offered by local universities in Hong Kong.

Our BIT programme is the FIRST full-time UK Computing and Information Technology programme to achieve this status in Hong Kong. The recognition puts our graduates on the same platform with other local degree graduates in seeking government employment. As an accredited programme, our students are eligible to apply for government grant and loans under the Government financial assistance scheme for post-secondary students (FASP).”

Coventry University in the United Kingdom, through the School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE) at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) offers a one-year, full-time programme leading to the BSc (Hons) Business Information Technology.

Coventry UniversityThe history of Coventry University can be traced back over 150 years. The academic structure of the University comprises three faculties and two schools: Faculty of Engineering and Computing, Faculty of Business, Environment and Society, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, School of Art and Design, and School of Life-long Learning. Currently around 18,000 students are studying at the University.

The Faculty of Engineering and Computing has over 200 academic staff members and over 150 technical and administrative staff. Teaching and LearningVenueClasses will normally be held at SCOPE Learning Centres in Kowloon Tong or in other districts.

TeachingLectures and tutorial classes are delivered by CityU full-time academic staff and/or local instructors with input to teaching from Coventry University.

Lecturers from Coventry University will attend the orientation at the start of the programme and play an important role in preparing the students for the Honours Degree Project. They work alongside staff from CityU so as to ensure the students’ best chance of success.

Student SupportSupport services to facilitate student learning include:

● Comprehensive support from local programme coordinator and local lecturers

Assessment and AwardStudent assessment consists of coursework and examinations. The weighting of these two components will vary among modules.

Generally, learning outcomes associated with knowledge and understanding are assessed by written examination and/or in-course tests. ● a higher diploma (HD) in computing or business

● a qualification deemed to be equivalent to one of above for the purpose of admission

Applicants whose first language is not English or whose previous qualification was not taught and assessed in English must provide evidence of proficiency in English Language by achieving at least IELTS 6.0 or an equivalent qualification.

Applications will be considered from students who do not satisfy these entry requirements but who can provide evidence of equivalent learning or experience.

In particular, graduates of the programme have successfully enrolled in MSc in Computer Science (offered by the Department of Computer Science, CityU), MSc in Electronic Ecommerce (jointly offered by the Department of Computer Science and Department of Information Systems, CityU) and relevant MSc or MBA programmes (offered by Coventry University) are also appropriate opportunities for further study.

Career ProspectsGraduates can expect to find employment in a wide range of activities such as project management, IT consultancy, database administration, and business support. With a few years of practical experience, graduates will usually be able to progress into senior positions such as system analysts, business analysts, project managers and managers of information resources/information technology units.

Admission RequirementCandidates for admission should possess one of the following:

● an associate degree (AD) in computing or business

● a higher diploma (HD) in computing or business

● a qualification deemed to be equivalent to one of above for the purpose of admission

Applicants whose first language is not English or whose previous qualification was not taught and assessed in English must provide evidence of proficiency in English Language by achieving at least IELTS 6.0 or an equivalent qualification.

Applications will be considered from students who do not satisfy these entry requirements but who can provide evidence of equivalent learning or experience.

It also extends the student’s knowledge of relevant Internet technologies, such as Internet security, web development, distributed objects and client/server architecture.

Management and Organisational BehaviourThis module aims to provide an understanding of the practical and professional issues associated with organisational behaviour and how these relate to effective management practice. The module demonstrates the application of behavioural science within the workplace and emphasises the role of management as a core integrating activity. It will provide an understanding of the human aspects of the management of change.

Digital Technology and SocietyThe aim of this module is to examine the local and global impact of e-commerce, the Internet and digital technology on individuals and groups of individuals in the society.

Project ManagementThis module introduces students to project management and provides a foundation for developing project management skills, both human and technical, that will enable them to work on a variety of projects, primarily with a computer or knowledge based component.

ProjectThe project module will be a major individual study at Honours level in a subject related to the degree award. It serves as the main vehicle for integration of the various programme modules and provides a focus for practical application of the knowledge gained on the programme.

Introduction to Research MethodsThis module introduces students to the process of business research and decision making. It provides an understanding of the practical and professional issues associated with the analysis, design and choice of solutions to business problems, and demonstrates the need for formal planning and management in the development of business projects. M-Commerce ApplicationsThis module seeks to provide the students with a basis for advising an organisation on the feasibility of its mobile commerce strategy. It focuses on introducing to the students to the nature and scope of mobile commerce applications, mobile commerce terminology, technical issues and business contexts. Strategies, characteristics and techniques for developing and deploying mobile commerce applications in organizations are also explored.
