COURSE DESCRIPTION
MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute is proud to be hosting the 2nd Annual MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute Symposium (MGTI 2019). The educational program will consist of three parallel tracks navigating the diagnosis and treatment options for kidney, pancreas, liver, and intestinal disorders including those requiring a transplant. These tracks include: Advances in Liver Diseases and Transplantation, Current Issues in Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation and Dialysis, and Update on Liver and GI Diseases and Transplants for Children.
The Advances in Liver Diseases and Transplantation track will address the gap between best and current practices in order to provide the best care to patients, reduce morbidity and mortality, and reduce the burden of liver disease in the Mid-Atlantic region. Up-to-date information on liver disease and transplant topics relevant to community practitioners will be highlighted. We will focus special attention on multidisciplinary management of tumors of the hepatobiliary tract as well. Through the Current Issues in Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation and Dialysis track the content will examine kidney and pancreas transplantation with a special emphasis on the multidisciplinary approach in pre and post-transplant care of patients with renal dysfunction and diabetes and following transplantation. The third track, Update on Liver and GI Diseases and Transplants for Children, will focus on topics that will be of interest to pediatric gastroenterology, primary care and allied health providers in the course of their interactions with infants and children with small bowel disease, parenteral nutrition, and chronic liver diseases including those likely to lead to transplantation.
MGTI 2019 offers an educational experience for attendees to interact in an interprofessional learning environment with designated tracks, lectures and panel discussions pertaining to your specific specialty.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This conference is intended for gastroenterologists, pediatric gastroenterologists, general surgeons, hepatobiliary surgeons, bariatric surgeons, pediatric hematologists and oncologists, surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, pulmonologists, hepatologists, cardiologists, endocrinologists, nephrologists, neonatologists, intensivists, primary care physicians, emergency physicians, hospitalists, residents and fellows, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, nutritionists, social workers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, dialysis technicians, home health providers serving pediatric populations, and pediatric case managers. In addition, the program is intended for members of the healthcare team who are involved in the care of patients with chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease, kidney and pancreas transplantations, and liver diseases.
ACCREDITATION
In support of improving patient care, MedStar Health is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation
Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
CREDIT DESIGNATION
This activity was planned by and for the healthcare team, and learners will receive 6.25 Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) credits for learning and change.
LEARNING OBJECTIVESADVANCES IN LIVER DISEASES AND TRANSPLANTATION TRACK• Discuss the management of patients with acute and chronic liver diseases• Identify common clinical scenarios and evidence-based management of patients with liver diseases• Discuss evidence-based management of the pre and post-transplant patient with goal of improving patient outcomes• Recognize how to triage a liver mass discovered on imaging based on patient characteristics and imaging findings• Discuss scenarios and factors which may increase patient access to liver transplantation
CURRENT ISSUES IN KIDNEY AND PANCREAS TRANSPLANTATION AND DIALYSIS TRACK• Recognize the pre-transplant conditions that may advantage their patients in receiving transplants• Identify the challenges posed by older patients in getting ready for transplant• Evaluate the specific factors that differentiate the older patients with better or poorer chances in transplantation• Analyze the newer strategies used to overcome even difficult to match patients and allow transplant• Differentiate the transplant implications of the choice between private insurance and Medicare/Medicaid• Recognize the warning signs of poor vascular health that may complicate the transplant process• Define the challenges, risks, and possibilities for pregnancy in transplant patients with attention to maternal, renal and
fetal health• Explore the growing role in technology in more effectively communicating and managing complex patients and conditions• Review the specific medical issues faced by patients receiving pancreas transplants• Evaluate the additional implications on transplant for the management of HCV positive patients
UPDATE ON LIVER AND GI DISEASES AND TRANSPLANTS FOR CHILDREN TRACK• Improve recognition of acute and chronic infant and child liver diseases• Demonstrate appropriate utilization of vaccines in immunocompromised pediatric settings• Demonstrate various nutritional options inside and outside of the home that are available to delay or prevent onset of
malnutrition and its ramifications in infants and children with compromised digestive function and chronic liver diseases• Review the impact of chronic digestive disease in a child on family functioning• Discuss options available to maintain age-appropriate lifestyles in infants and children with compromised digestive
function and chronic liver diseases
