“Playing at a big school,”Artinger said, “the transitionwas probably a little easier forme than it is for some guys. AtFreedom, we played greatteams and great players everyweek. Actually, I see a lot offamiliar faces here that I sawin the LVC.”

“To be honest, the first guyI met at orientation was MattDaube,” Case said of the for-mer East Stroudsburg offen-sive lineman who was listedat 6-foot-3, 310 pounds. “He’sa huge guy. And I’m thinkingto myself, ‘what have I gotteninto?’ Yes, it was quite a giantstep up from my high schooldays at North Warren.”

This week, Artinger, Caseand the Warriors playMillersville at Eiler-MartinStadium. Kickoff is 1 p.m.

Douds welcomed both toEast Stroudsburg with openarms. The winningest coachin PSAC history said there isabsolutely no correlation be-tween school size and player

production.“We’ve had kids who

played eight-man football andkids who’ve played in thelargest schools around,” saidDouds, in his 36th season asthe Warriors’ head coach.“Really, there are a lot of goodfootball players all over theplace.

“I remember when we hadthe Detzi triplets (Jeff, Joe andJohn) here and two other kidsfrom Pius X one year. Andthose five came from a grad-uating class of 46. They weresome of our best players.”

Despite different back-grounds, Artinger and Caseare enjoying similarly suc-

cessful seasons.Artinger, a 6-1, 180-pound

senior, is tied for the confer-ence lead with five intercep-tions. He has also registered33 tackles, including 22 of the

solo variety.“My main job is not to let

anyone get deep,” he said.“I’m also responsible for a lotof the calls and checks in oursecondary. Our coaches heredo a great job of putting us inpositions to be successful. I’mjust trying to do my part.”

“Nick’s worked himself in-to being a fine player,” Doudssaid. “He’s experienced backthere and he’s sort of the gluefor some of our younger play-ers in the secondary.”

Case is a redshirt juniorwhose specialty is pressuringopposing quarterbacks.

The 6-2, 255-pounder hasmade 35 tackles this season,including 10 behind the line ofscrimmage. He also has foursacks, three fumble recoveriesand two forced fumbles.

“I just try to fly around andmake plays,” Case said. “It’sjust fun being a part of this de-fense. We got each other’sback and I feel like this is one

of the closet teams I’ve been apart of on or off the footballfield.”

“Jeff has outstanding speedfor a defensive end and he’s areal good rusher,” Douds said.“He puts constant pressureon people. There’s one speedfor Jeff, and that’s all-out.He’s a great kid, too.”

Artinger is down to the fi-nal two games of his colle-giate career while Case is un-certain if he will return nextseason and use his medicalred-shirt.

Both said they have en-joyed their experiences atEast Stroudsburg.

“This is a great place,” saidArtinger, a 21-year-old sec-ondary education major whoplans to teach mathematicsand hopes to coach in theLehigh Valley.

“I’ve been playing footballmy whole life. It hasn’t hit meyet that these are my last twogames. Probably after our lastone. I’m pretty sure whennext year rolls around, I’llmiss it.”

“I just loved playing forCoach Douds,” said Case, a22-year-old secondary educa-tion major who plans to teachbiology.

“He’s a great coach, notjust for football but for life.Coach always makes it a pointthat football is a great facilita-tor for life. About how youhandle adversity and getthrough tough times. I’m gladto be part of his program.”
