COM-FSM Marine Science students board the Umitaka MaruMarine Science students from the College of Micronesia-FSM visited and boarded the Umitaka Maru, the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology research vessel on February 21st. According to COM-FSM Professor Allan Bourgoin, at least 25 COM-FSM students affiliated with the college’s Marine Science Program especially fisheries biology and oceanography boarded the Umitaka Maru for a 90-minute tour of the vessel. The college students were shown a short video production highlighting the vessel’s previous journeys. Before its arrival at the Pohnpei port on February 18th, the Umitaka Maru made previous stops at New Caledonia, Australia and Vietnam. After the video presentation, the COM-FSM students were accompanied by the Tokyo University students onboard the ship and toured the vessel including the engine control room,

the different living quarters, kitchen and dining areas, the laundry area, and the wet and dry research laboratories. The COM-FSM students were offered drinks of ice tea after the tour.

Recycling projectFrom Page 1

Currently, there are six (6) wire mesh receptacles with the recycling logo attached to each on them on campus. The Environmental Studies students constructed the wire mesh receptacles with the help of the office of Maintenance and Security staff. The plastic recycling bins already distributed inside the buildings will remain in place for your recycling needs. If you wish for a plastic recycling bin to be placed in your work area, please inform

Professor Allain Bourgoin at: [email protected]. The Environmental Studies students are accountable for the maintenance of all recycling bins and for collecting statistical data on all collected items. The students will also need to develop strategies to create awareness relative to the recycling project at the National Campus. Please discard aluminum cans and plastic bottles in the appropriate containers.

Marine Science StudentsFrom Page 3The Umitaka Maru travels to all oceans of the world providing students of Advanced Marine Technician Education course training opportunities in investigation and research. The vessel also provides Marine Science Education students with opportunities for marine technician licensure by conducting onboard fisheries training. Students learn navigation and fishing skills onboard the Umitaka Maru as well as the skills for manipulating catches and preserving them to maintain maximum freshness. The highlight of Tokyo University students’ scientific tour was their expedition to Antarctica where they utilized everything they learned in the freezing Antarctic temperatures. A day prior to the tour of the vessel by COM-FSM students, the Tokyo University students

visited the college’s National Campus. The Umitaka Maru left Pohnpei on February 23rd and is scheduled to arrive Tokyo on March 4th. The vessel is expected to return to Pohnpei on February next year. The College of Micronesia-FSM and the Tokyo University currently hold a memorandum of agreement designed to deepen the friendship and expand mutual understanding between the institutions through academic and educational cooperation. The two schools have agreed to collaborate among faculty and staff members for research, symposia, and other academic pursuits as feasible and mutually agreed. It allows for exchange visits by students as mutually agreed and jointly arranged, joint research projects, and exchange of information materials on education, training and research.

Marketing students test marketing mix skills on Valentine’s DayFrom Page 3

Principles of Marketing (BU270) students from the National Campus sold gift baskets on Valentine’s Day to demonstrate their understanding of the Marketing Mix tool. According to BU270 instructor Ms. Marlene Mangonon, the purpose of the activity was to demonstrate student learning on several concepts of the course especially the use of Marketing Mix. According to Businessdictionary.com, Marketing Mix is a tool that utilizes a planned mix of controllable elements of a product’s marketing plan

commonly referred to as 4Ps: product, price, place, and promotion. The students formed groups and sold their own Valentine’s Day gift products. They used local products such as

coconuts, bananas and papayas as the main ingredients in

their cakes, chips, pickles, local snacks and drinks. Students also sold other gift items such as coconuts that were carved to look like hearts, cookies, muffins, roses and other

items. The student groups utilized different concepts in promoting, packaging, and pricing of their products. They designed and circulated promotions before the event; they carefully planned the development of their products; they chose strategic locations to sell their products, and they also came up with effective pricing strategies. According to Ms. Mangonon, the presentation and sale of items were coordinated with other classes such as the Fundamentals of Management (BU260) and Accounting (AC250). The students were evaluated using the Foundations and Skills for Lifelong Learning Value Rubric. Mangonon said that some of the student groups had their products reserved even before they were set up for sale. Funds collected from the sales would be used for future activities.
