Please bring your homework and you can work when you are not on stage. If you must miss a rehearsal for any reason, please notify:
1. Kendra Johnson (904) 962-9824; [email protected]
2. Patti Paquin at (904) 630-6805, Ext. 1004 or in her Office; [email protected]
3. Andrea Talley at (904) 630-6800, Ext. 1008 or in her Office; [email protected]
We have very limited time to rehearse, so make the most of your time on stage. You may NOT
have visitors, including parents, in the cafeteria during rehearsals. We are trying to limit
distractions from the rehearsals. If you have questions, please ask a sponsor, not a technician.
Anyone not directly connected to the production will be asked to leave the rehearsal area.
NO ONE IS ALLOWED BACKSTAGE OR ON THE STAGE AREA EXCEPT
CONTESTANTS, SPONSORS, ESCORTS, AND TECH CREW DURING REHEARSALS
OR ON THE NIGHT OF THE PRODUCTION.
During Production Week, we will ask parents to help with feeding the entire production group.
Please volunteer to bring in food and/or to provide drinks, etc. Production Week is the Monday
through Wednesday of the Miss SoMA Pageant (April 15th through April 17th). Rehearsals may
run until at least 8:00 p.m. each night. Parents please do not talk to the technical director after the
rehearsals, please see Kendra Johnson with your concerns.
Phases of the Miss SoMA Pageant Competition 2019
PRODUCTION NUMBER
All contestants will participate in the Opening Act in which all participants have an equal part. The
contestants will not be judged in the Production Number.
EVENING WEAR (25%)
For this portion of the competition, you are allowed to wear evening attire, which MUST be
approved in advance by the Pageant Committee.
CASUAL WEAR (20%)
Contestants will be allowed to show their own personality in a cute, appropriate casual wear outfit
(cocktail dress, capris with a nice top, skirt/top outfit, etc.). The outfit MUST be approved in
advance by the Pageant Committee.
TALENT (30%)
The talent competition is a major portion of the pageant and should be given careful
consideration. Talents may not exceed three minutes. Contestants have earned a higher score
with one talent rather than a combination of two or more (i.e. singing, dancing and playing
instruments).
Talent presentations MUST be performed live on stage and not be projected. This does not
preclude the utilization of taped background music (on CD or MP3) as long as the contestant
is performing live. No talent may be duplicated by another contestant. The Pageant
Committee will consider requests on a first come first serve basis.
Fire batons, sharp objects, or any objects/talents that would have the potential to cause harm
to anyone are PROHIBITED. Furthermore, props that would occupy large portions of the
stage, live animals, and removal of clothing are prohibited.
Considering the talent that is planned and the limitations on the sound system, the contestant
should decide, in advance, whether to use a standing microphone, wired hand microphone,
or a wireless hand microphone. Information must be given to the production coordinator.
Taped accompaniment must be on a CD or MP3. Regardless of the talent, background music
cannot have vocals, instruments, or other noises that mimic the contestant’s. The
background music may contain “Ooh’s” and “Aah’s”, but nothing that the contestant may
sing along with.
Any article the contestant brings on stage MUST be functional. Non-functional props will
more than likely distract the contestant (For example, if a chair is brought, the contestant
MUST sit in that chair).
If technical difficulties prevent the contestant from performing any phase of the
competition, fairness dictates that she will be allowed to restart. The decision to restart will
be made with consultation of the producer, director, and the judges’ panel.
ON STAGE QUESTION (15%)
At the end of the evening wear competition, the contestants with the five highest scores will be
asked a general question. At this point, each of the five contestants will draw randomly and be asked
one of the questions by the emcee.
PARTICIPATION (10%)
Each contestant is expected to have a positive, cooperative attitude, be in attendance and punctual at
every practice/meeting, and adhere to all deadlines. Each day of practice, contestants will start with
10 points and can lose points based on the following criteria:
♥ Due Dates – Contestants will lose 5 points on the first day a deadline is not met. Each
day after, up to one week, the contestant will lose 1 additional points if the deadline
is still not met. If the deadline is not met after one week, the contestant will lose a
whole week’s worth of points (30 points).
♥ Absences – Contestants will lose 10 points for being absent during practice. NO
EXCEPTIONS!!! Contestants must notify one of the sponsors before 3:15 p.m. the
day of the absence or they will lose 3 additional points the next practice they attend.
♥ Punctuality – Contestants will be expected to be in the cafeteria by 3:15 and stay until
4:45 unless otherwise noted by a sponsor. If a contestant arrives at the cafeteria late
after roll call will lose 5 points. The same rules will apply for contestants leaving early
with the same point deductions.
♥ Attitude – Contestants will be expected to have a polite, kind, positive and cooperative
attitude. If a sponsor is notified that a contestant has a bad attitude, the contestant will
be pulled aside for a discussion. This will serve as a warning with no point deductions.
However, if the sponsor is notified twice about a contestant having a bad attitude, the
contestant will lose all 10 points for the day. Behaviors that will qualify as having a
bad attitude include but are not limited to: use of profane language, unwillingness to
participate, failure to follow directions, and disrupting practice. We want contestants
to participate and enjoy the event, but not at the expense of other contestants.
