Great ExpectationsWritten by Charles Dickens

“All of one piece and consistentlytruthful.”–George Bernard Shaw, winner of theNobel Prize in Literature

“In none of [Dickens’] other worksdoes he evince a shrewder insight intoreal life, and a cheaper perception andknowledge of what is called the world.”—The Atlantic

Dickens’ Great Expectations tells the story of Pip, a young orphan who leads a sadchildhood full of poverty and suffering until an anonymous benefactor turns his worldupside-down and offers him a chance at becoming a gentleman.

Eager to win the heart of the estranged Estella, Pip sets off on a long and treacherous journey in hopes of obtaining the money and education of a proper gentleman. However, not only must Pip escape the world of the common laborer, but he must also discover who his benefactor is. Little does he know, he is no more than a prop in the schemes of the psychotic Miss Havisham, who, after being abandoned at her wedding many years ago, has made it her life goal to destroy the hearts of the entire male race. Throughout his journey, Pip must ask himself if being a gentleman is worth leaving his loved ones behind, and if he’s losing himself in the process.

A classic tale of love, absolution, and redemption, Dickens tells an unforgettable story, helping us understand that our deepest ethical predicaments are rooted in our own fantasies.

CHARLES DICKENS rose to fame with the 1836 serial publication ofThe Pickwick Papers. He is also the author of fifteen major novels, hundreds of short stories, numerous plays, and several non-fictionbooks. Commonly regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorianperiod, Dickens’ work proceeds to inspire adaptations in every artisticgenre. He currently resides in the Poets’ Corner of Westminster Abbey.

Also by Dickens:A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist

An inspiring tale that crosses the path of an ambitious, young boy whowill stop at nothing for the love of his life with a mentally derangedwoman who’s plotting the downfall of the male race in a wedding dressshe’s been wearing for years.

Martin’s story weaves the details of the famous battles with the tragic storiesof the men who struggled to fight them. Humble and honest, Martin first and foremosttells the truth.Narrative remembers the life of the early American patriot, the individual who bravelystood on the line of duty to experience hardships during the birth of a nation. The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to SexIn this masterpiece of empiricism, Darwin combats racist theories of polygenism (the concept that the different “races” of man evolved separately). Countering the popular belief that some races are simply superior to others, Darwin’s more egalitarian views helped shape how contemporary science combats destructive worldviews, and stills hold weight today. In this groundbreaking and compelling work, Darwin discusses sexual selection, how traits are affected by natural selection, and

perhaps most importantly, how man evolved from “lower order” species. Including compelling illustrations and explanations, Darwin successful distills even the most jargony science writing to be understood by the laymen. Inside the reader will find coherent explanations of evolution using specific examples of adaptations in well known species of birds, dogs and more!

CHARLES ROBERT DARWIN was born on the 12th of February 1809 in Shrewsbury England. Known initially for his first work outlining evolution, The Origin of Species, he continued to publish clarifications and debates with dissenters. Darwin was a graduate of The University of Cambridge where he taught at Christ College. Among various forms of contemporary recognition for his contributions to the field of science, he was awarded Royal Medal, Copley Medal, Wollaston Medal. Charles Darwin died, among family, in Downe, UK.

The NibelungenliedIn a surprisingly human and relatable narrative, the tale of the legendary heroes of 5th century Germany is retold in The Nibelungenlied. This English translation gives new accessibility to that mysterious time of epic battles and mythical creatures. In terms of sheer scope and scale and poetic mastery The Nibelungenlied follows in the footsteps of The Iliad and The Odyssey. In the equivalent of the early German “fall of Troy”, the princess Kriemhild has a vision of her

future husband’s demise. Sure enough after many exploits and heroic deeds the brave Siegfried is slain in cold-blood by Hagen. The rest of the narrative follows Kriemhild who seeks revenge upon those who betrayed her husband and stole her treasure. The Nibelungenlied is an essential part of any classical literature collection.
