2 What’s On
Dear Members
The Annual Council Meeting on 18 April is fast approaching and I hope to see many of you there. I am looking forward to
the new Sub-Committee year which you will hear about at the Annual Council Meeting. Sub-Committees have had a
‘make-over’ and we hope that their new look will encourage members to observe or sit-in on a meeting, with a view to
joining. If you are interested in observing any of the Sub-Committees please contact [email protected].
We have been bequeathed a beautiful rocking horse (pictured here) to auction to raise funds to be shared between Denman
and BFWI County funds. If you are interested your Secretary has all the details. I look forward to receiving lots of bids!
With best wishes Jenny Street, Federation Chairman

The Great Stink Tuesday 29th May
We regret that this trip has been
CANCELLED Asbestos has been found in the basement of
Crossness pumping station, home to the
Romanesque Beam Engine House which was the high-
light of the trip. Members may note from the
Website www.crossness.org.uk that alternatives are suggested, but sadly these options already formed part of our original tour rather than being ‘extras’. City & Village Tours are therefore cancelling all trips in 2018.
We are top of their list for a 2019 visit. Those who went
on the trip last September may be reassured by these words from City & Village Managing Director Gyll King: “As the asbestos has not been touched or cut into it is no more
a danger to visitors than it has been at any time in the past 30 years and until such time that it is tampered with it will contin-ue to present no risk.”

The basics you will need: Two pieces of fabric 50cm x 35cm
One length 25mm wide bias binding, length 75cm
Embellishments of your choice to decorate,
edge, finish. Let your imagination be your guide.
Your WI Pennant needs to say: WI name and date
formed then can say anything you want it to, what you
do, clubs you run, where you meet etc decorated in
embroidery, patchwork, cross- stitch, stump work,
beading, edged or left plain.
These finished pennants will travel across the county
with us in 2020 (all joined together) you will be able to
see them in all their glory at all BFWI Centenary events
during that year.
To make the pennant cut out any two pieces of fabric
measuring 34cm across top and 49cm along the long
edges (a triangle). Decide first how you are going to
decorate the front of your pennant before sewing the
two pieces together allowing 1cm seam allowance
along outside edges, trim the excess fabric off at the
point to reduce the fullness, when you have sewn your
flag turn it the right way and press to get nice crisp
edges then carefully fold the bias binding in half, tuck
the open seam of the triangle inside the folded
binding, pin in place, stitching together the binding
and triangle as you go. Leave 20cm free at each end
of your pennant for joining together with the other
pennants.
Only one Pennant per WI please to reach us at Stuart
Lodge by 14 November 2019 so you have loads and
loads of time. Reminders and updates to follow over
the coming months.
