The contents page of XXL show a long shot of Chris Brown, which allows us to see his full outfit, He is wearing baggy trousers with his hood up and a bandana around his neck. This clothing is usually associated with hip-hop artists.

XXL is split into two parts, “The A-Side” and “The B-Side”. Chris Brown’s head covers the letter A on the A-side. This connotes audiences will be familiar with the page for people who like to read a lot.

Chris Brown also covers the issue date which suggests loyal audiences will already know when the issue is released.

There is a pull quote in bold next to Chris Brown which suggests it is from him. Not many magazines have a pull quote on the contents which differentiates XXL from a magazine such as The Source. The gives the audience the feeling of exclusiveness

The poses of Chris Brown is quite aggressive which is usually the personality that is shown by the media when it comes to hip-hop. There is also a lot of white space on the page but this may be to draw attention to Chris Brown and emphasise importance.

However, the page numbers and headings next to them are both in bold to stand out. Underneath this, there is more in depth information which, when artist names are mentioned, are in bold which allows the audience to see which artists are featured.

The page numbers are bigger than the headings which allow the audience to pick the page easily..

THE SOURCE

Here the masthead is written in big black sans-serif font “Master Plan” at the left top corner of the page. The title is placed at the top left corner written  on a creamy background making it stand out more so that readers can notice it first.

The magazine contents are written on the left hand side of the page, to give more space for the image of rapper Kendrick Lamar here the stories/articles are categorised so that readers can easily find the article in which they want to read and its page number.

The image of Kendrick Lamar  is taken at a long medium shot to give readers a look at the artist. He is wearing all black jumper and jeans with some jewellery added such as the gold chain, ring and crown making him more appealing to hip-hop young music fans. Hip-hop rappers are seen to wear expensive clothing and jewellery. Here he's also wear a multi-coloured, over-sized crown on his head as a sign of  power, richness, and authority. He is not smiling which is expected of  rapper who like to be seen to be tough.

Unlike other magazine who will write “content page” Source magazine rejected that idea and named their content page “Master Plan”. This is because over the years Source magazine has started  to  feature a variety of subjects , such as sports, films and politics, instead of just music
