TanyaCameron(maternityrelievingsinceSeptember2012)PartnershipBrokerTanyahasover20yearsSalesandMarketingexperienceintheITandProfessionalServicesindustry.Tanyahasworkedforanumberofmajorcorporationsinbothanoperationalandmanagerialcapacity.TheseincludeKPMG,EDS,Unisys,Vodafone,NECAustraliaandTelstra.TanyahasalsooperatedherownsmallbusinessprovidingindependentconsultingservicestosmallandmediumenterpriseswithintheTelecommunicationsindustry.SallyMcClureWorkPlacementSupportProgrammeSallyhasbeenwiththeteamsince2011andiscurrentlytheTeamLeaderfortheprogramme.ShehasabackgroundofretailandqualificationsinFrontlineandRetailManagement.ShewasawardedacrownscholarshipforherFrontlineManagementafterleavingStLukeGrammar.Sally’spersonableyetprofessionalapproachhasbeenavaluableassettoNBBENfortheWorkPlacementProgramme.JamesCruickshankWorkPlacementSupportProgrammeJamesisanewmembertoourteamandcomesfromaninterestingandskillenrichedbackground.HehasaBachelorofArts/Psychologyandastrongskillsetincommunication,researchandplanningandleadership.Hisemploymenthistoryhaspredominatelybeenretailandcustomerserviceorientatedbuthealsohasastrongpassionforsportsandinparticularcoachingandmentoring.

EugynaLimAdministration/LinkstoLearning/CareersExpoGinahasbeenwithussince2009andhasproventobeoneofthemostdiversememberstheteam.Sheisthe"faceoftheBEN"fromanentryperspectivesupportingalltheprogrammeswithadministrationandreceptionduties,shehasextendedhertalentsintotheLinkstoLearningProgrammeasaSupportOfficerandthisyearhasmanagedthecoordinationoftheCareersExpowiththeassistanceofStephanie.StephanieBirchAdministration/CareersExpoStephanieisarelativelynewmembertoourteam.ShehascometousasaninterntoassistinthecoordinationoftheCareersExpoin2013.SheiscurrentlyadiplomastudentstudyingEventManagementandupontheresignationofGinaisJuly,willcontinuewiththeOrganisationastheAdministration/LinkstoLearningSupportOfficer.AshlingO'BrienLinkstoLearningProgrammeAshlinghasbeenheadinguptheLinkstoLearningProgrammesincethestartof2012.Shehasastrongbackgroundinbusiness–particularlytelecommunicationsandalsohasaBachelorofArtsinBusinessEnterprise,DiplomainMarketingManagementandInternationalTrade.SheisacompassionatepersonandperfectfitfortheLinkstoLearningprogramme.


PeterMerryfullLinkstoLearningProgrammePeterjoinedourstaffwithfreshexperiencewithworkingwithdisengagedyouththroughhisaffiliationwithTAFE.ItiswiththisexperienceworkingwithdisengagedyouthonmotorvehiclerepairprogrammesandalsohasanambassadorforTAFEinadiplomaticprogrammewithstudentsfromKorea.Peterhasextensiveexperiencespanningmotorvehiclerepair,aircraftmaintenanceandhasawealthofpracticalknowledgewhichassistsintherepairandmaintenanceofequipmentandGranmasRefuge.GregStockLinkstoLearningProgrammeGregjoinedourteaminmid2012insupportofourLinkstoLearningprogramme.Hehasskillandexpertiseasacounsellor,facilitatorandgroupeducator.HispreviousworkhascenteredaroundtheuppernorthshoreareawhichhasassistedinprogrammedeliveryandhisexternalroleasaparenteducationcoordinatoratWarringahCouncilhasalsobeenusefulincreatingastrongersynergybetweenourorganisationandcouncil.

ChairpersonReportNorthernBeachesBusinessEducationNetwork’s(NBBEN)Missionis“toworkwithinthecommunitytocreateabetterfutureforyoungpeople”whichagainwehaveachievedandcontinuetoattracttheessentialfundingnecessarytocarryonthisgoodworkintheregion.Thestaffdoawonderfuljobofdeliveringtheprogramstoourschoolsandbusinesspartners.WehavejustfinishedtheyearonahighwiththeManlyFood&SustainabilityFestival,theNorthernBeachesCareerExpo,withover50exhibitorsandmorethan20schoolsparticipating.NextyearitwouldbegoodtoseeNBBEN’snamewithanevenbiggerprofilefortheseevents.NBBENalsorelocatedattheendof2012toanewmoreexposedpremiseat529PittwaterRoadinBrookvale.Itishopewiththenewlooklayoutandexposuretoover40,000vehiclesperweek,wecanreallyimpactthecommunitiesawarenessofourorganisationasamajorplayerinthecommunity.ItisgoodnewsthatDEEWRfundingforPartnershipBrokersandtheNSWLinkstoLearningProgrammewillcontinuetobefundeduntilendof2014and2013respectively,continuingthegoodworkthathastakenplace.Thesearebothessentialandrelevantprogramsinsupportingtheyouthoftoday.Movingforwardwecanonlyhopetheirrelevanceconstinuestoremaininthelimelight.ThankstoWarringahCouncil,YouthReach,ManlyCouncilandsomeoftheotherlargestakeholdersinourregionfortheirsupporttowardseffectivetrainingbeingdeliveredouryouth.AsinyearsbeforethecombinedexpertiseoftheNBBENstaffhaveensuredcontinuedprogramdeliverybutgrowthwithover1000workplacementsthisyear.ThankstoMarciaGuywhocametoNBBENlatein2012asContractManagerwhilstSamwasonmaternityleave.Shecertainlyheldthefortverycompetentlyandkeptthingsrunningsmoothly.WewishMarciathebestonhertravels.TheBoardisappreciativeofthehostemployerswhosupportourorganisation.Highlightsincludethe2012andconsecquent2013NorthernBeachesCareersExpoeventinMaywhereNBBEN’sheldaonestopshopofnetworkingopportunitiestoYear10,11and12students.Miramareisasuitablesizedvenueforthiseventandourexhibitorswerewelllookedafter.ThankstoLynneMabb,AdrienneScalese,SylviaBorgandJackMcCann,MadeleinePriceandDavidGillfortheirdedicatedcontributiontotheorganisation.Inparticular,thankstoSylviaBorgforhertirelesseffortsasTreasurer.Anorganisationswebsiteisimperativeintoday’sfastpacedworld,andNBBEN’swebsiteistheplacewherewecannotonlyspeakaboutourachievementsandsellourservices,butextendourreachintothecommunity.IamverymuchlookingforwardtothelaunchofNBBEN’snewcontemporarywebsite.LizStokerChairperson

IhavenowbeenluckyenoughtoworkfortheNBBENfor9yearsandithasbeenamazingtoseethegrowthinboththeorganisationandthedevelopmentofourprofileinthecommunity.

Thispastyearhasseenitsshareofchallengeswith2staffincludingmyselftakematernityleave.Wehavelostacoupleoflongstandingstaffmembersbuthavealsoincreasedourstaffsothatatthispoint,weareateamof12.DetailsoncurrentandoutgoingstaffareincludedinthisAnnualReport.

AnoverviewoftheBENatthispointwouldshowyouthatwehave4keybusinessareas;theCareersExpo,WorkPlacementSupport,PartnershipBrokersandLinkstoLearning.TheseareasallowustooffersupportreviewtoyoungpeopleacrosstheNorthernBeaches,LowerNorthShoreandotherareasoftheNorthernSydneyregion.

OurrelationshipwiththeBurdekinAssociationhascontinuedtogrowwiththelinkatGranmasRefuge.WehavedevelopedthissiteasourbasefortheLinkstoLearningprogrammeandhaverecentlycompletedsomeofthekeyworksrequiredaspartofmovingtowardsthesitebeingcommunityfacility.Wehavealsoalignedwithanothercommunitygroup-Silverplus.

SilverplusareasilversmithinggroupwhoarebasedprimarilyinthePittwaterlocalgovernmentarea.Theyareasmallcollectiveofpeoplewhoenjoymakingjewelleryandgeneralsilversmithwork.ItisthroughtheirsupportandcontributionthatwehavebeenabletonotonlyrefurbishanareaofGranmastohousethembutalsotobuildanewdisabledtoiletfacilityasrequiredbytheDevelopmentApplicationtocounciltochangethepurposeofthepropertysoitcanbefutureusedasacommunityfacility.

Weareintheprocessoffacingre-applicationforallourcurrentcontracts,aStategovernmentreviewofserviceregionfootprintsandaFederalelectionalllooming.2013/2014lookstobeanexcitingnewspace.

Withstatisticsshowingasocialreturnoninvestmentat$5.50foreverydollarinvestedinthePartnershipBrokersprogramme,asureandsteadyincreaseinengagementinvocationaleducationaloptions,andbudgetoninexcessof$800,000.00perannumIcanonlyhopethefuturewillcontinuetobeasbrightasthejourneyhasbeensofar.

IhopethatIcancontinuetomanthehelmoftheNBBENthroughthecominguncertaintyandgrowtheorganisationfromstrengthtostrengthinordertocontinuetosupporttheyoungpeopleofNorthernSydney.

WorkPlacementSupportProgramme2013hasbeenaverysuccessfulbeginninghalfoftheyearfortheWorkPlacementSupportProgramme.AsDanielChambersleftTheBENlate2012,IwasofferedtheopportunitytogrowintotheroleofTeamLeaderfortheWorkPlacementProgramme.Duringthishandover,ClairePettetjoinedTheBENastheWorkPlacementCoordinator.UnfortunatelythisdidnotworkoutforClaireasshedecidedonadifferentcareerpathandleftatthebeginningofMarch.Sincethen,JamesCruickshankhasjoinedusasthenewWorkPlacementCoordinator.JameshasquicklyevolvedintohisrolebyprovinghisabilityasaWorkPlacementCoordinatorinbuildingandmaintainingrelationshipswithschools,employersandstaff.Ourapproachhasalwaysbeentosplitvocationsbetweenstaffinordertoallowstaffthechancetogrow,developandmaintainrelationshipswithbothourschoolsandourhostemployersofwhichourprogrammecouldnotworkwithout.Currentlythevocationshavebeensplitintothefollowing:

IhavecontinuedtheroleasthekeycontactforallTAFEVETworkplacementsensuringcontinuityinthecommunicationacrossthevariouscourseframeworksTAFEhastooffer.Asperpreviousyears,theWPSPteamstillarefacedbythesameproblems.Theseinclude:

InpastyearsWPSPhaveexperienceddifficultiesinafewdifferentvocationsincludingIT,Tourism,RetailandBusinessServicesbutasofthisyear,wehavenotcomeacrossanyofthisdifficultiesasrecruitmenthasbeenamainfocusthereforetheemployerdatabaseisontherise.


Asof31stMay2013,theWPSPteamhavealreadyexceededtheirRecruitmentTargetsfor6ofthe11vocations.Unfortunatelyforourtwobiggestvocations,Hospitality(CommercialCookery)andConstruction,welostquiteafewemployersforthebeginningoftheyear.Eventhoughthishasnotaffectedanyrequestedweeksbyourschools/TAFE–theWPSPteamarestillworkinghardtoreachtheirrecruitmentandretentiontargetsbymidTerm3.AsTerm2isnowcompleteandTerm3iswellunderway,theWPSParefocusingonthemarketingsideofWorkPlacementtoensureemployerrecruitmentstaysontheriseandalsotomaintaintheirstrongrelationshipswithexisting/newemployers.Thisalsoincludestheadditionalscopeofpromotingthe“BrighterFutures”campaignwhichpromotestheWorkplacementandSchoolBasedApprenticeship/Traineeshipoptions.Inmaintainingafocusoncontinuousimprovement,theWPSPteamarecurrentlyworkingnewandimprovedwaystoreceiveadditionalfeedbackfromEmployers,VETCoordinators/TeachersandStudents.Thiswillbebeneficialinallparties.NewevaluationsformsandprogrammesareunderwaywhichshallbeinplaceforTerm3start.Atthestartof2012,SamanthaKinginstigatedtheplanninganddevelopmentofanewsystemfortheWorkPlacementProgramme.Thisnewsystemisanonline“cloudbased”portalwhichallowsschoolstoaccessOnlineStudentRegistrationsandalltheirplacementdetails.ThiswillsavealotoftimefortheWPSPteamtofocusonrecruitmentandmaintainingrelationshipswithcurrentemployersandalsoensuretransparencyacrossthewholeWorkplacementprocess.WeplantohavetheOnlinePortalupandrunningforaTerm3start.Ihaveapproachedafewkeyschoolstotesttheprocesspriortorollingthisoutacrossalltheschools.Ialsoplantofacilitateinformationanddemonstrationsessionstoallofourschoolsaswellasrolloutanononsenseusermanualtoensureallschoolstaffareequippedtonavigatethroughthenewprocess.Ilookforwardtoasmoothrunningrestof2013!SallyMcClureWorkPlacementSupportProgrammeTeamLeader


School Business Community Partnership Brokers Asourmajorfinancedprogrammearea,thePartnershipBrokersisaworkingatbreakingnewgroundinthinkingandapproachtosupportingyoungpeopleprepareandplanfortheirexitfromadolescencetoyoungadulthood.Withourcurrentteam,wehavedevelopedastrongandcohesiverelationshipwithallthemajorplayersintheregionincludingcouncils,welfareproviders,othernongovernmentfundedagenciesandsmallbusinessandinterestedindividuals.

ThePartnershipBrokerconceptinaninterestingonewithsomepeopleabletograspitsvaluequickerthanothers.Withinourteamwecontinuetopushtheboundariesofthinkingandengagementtospreadthegoodwordaboutwhatwearedoingandhowtheycangetinvolved.

ThereisalsoanaturalsynergybetweenthePartnershipBrokersworkandtheothercontractswehold.Thisensuresthatallyoungpeople,theirparentsandkeycontactsatschoolareawareoftheoverarchingsupportthattheNBBENisabletobringtotheircommunity.

Ourfacebookpagehasbecomeastrongpresencewithover10,000likes/followers.ThishasenabledustosharethemessageofnotonlywhatweareabletoachieveasanorganisationandPartnershipBrokersbutwhatothergoodworkishappening,promotingthe“YouthAttainmentandTransition”initiativeinabroaderwayandinthemomentway.

Theskillsandexpertiseofourteamhasallowedastrongandcomprehensivecoverageofthekeystakeholdergroupswithastrongcollaborativeandsupportiveapproachtoutilizingtheskillsetofallstafftoensureasuccessfuloutcomenotmatterwhattheprogrammeoractivity.

In2013/2014therewillbealottoreportwithmanyofourlargerprojectscomingintofruitionandwithit,hopefullyamorecomprehensiverecognitionoftheNBBENasbeingattheforefrontofsupportandfacilitationaidinginthesuccessoftheseinitiatives.

Themajorityofourstudentsachievedtheircertificateintheirchosencourseframework.ThosestudyingAgrifoodsandBrickandBlocklayingcompletedtheirWHSwhitecardtrainingwhichallowsallparticipantstoworksafelyonabuildingsite.TheNailTechBeautycoursestudentsallhasaonedayspraytanningworkshop.Allwhoparticipatedthatdayachievedthespraytanningcertificate.SurfLifeSavingdeliveredacoursewherealltheparticipantsreceivedaCPRandEmergencyCarecertificate.OnourLinkstoLeaningCareerDaysallstudentshavehadachancetofindopportunitiesfromthefollowingorganisations:

StudentsalsogotachancetoexperimentwiththeircreativesidewitheachstudentgiventheopportunitytoworkwithWarringahcouncilandtheirspraypaintingartistscooperativeaswellasalocalDJ-DJMeemwhocameandshowedourstudentshowtomixmusic.Inaddition,theAgri–FoodstudentshadanopportunitytolearnaboutcaretakingabowlslawnwhichwasthenrewardedbytheclubwithabowlinglessonandaBBQ.OverallintheNorthShoreprogrammewefoundalotofsocialissueswiththestudentsandaskedandorganisation“REACH”tocomeoutanddoacounsellingsessionwiththestudents.Itwasatremendoussuccesswiththestudentswhothoroughlyenjoyedtheprocess.Theengagementofourpartneringorganisationsandschoolswasexcellent.Beforedecisionsweremadeoncoursesweshouldrun,wehadameetingwiththeDepartmentofEducationtodeterminewhatcourseswereneededandwhatwerebeingprovidedbyotherorganisations.Webuildourprogrammearoundtheregionsneed.AllotheragenciesincludingtheRegisteredTrainingOrganisationsinvolvedwereexcellent.Theywereopenwiththeirfeedbackandoftenofferedwaysinwhichtoengagedspecificparticipantsthatwereperhapsontheedge.


Allinall,itwastherelationshipbetweenourprogrammecoordinator,AshlingO’BrienandsupportofficersPeterMerryfull,GregStockandEugynaLimandthestudentswhichdeterminedasuccessfultransitionaloutcomeintheformofaplan..Itisthispersonalengagementonaregularbasiswhichdevelopedasturdyrapportwiththeparticipantsandmadethemfeellikethesiteandprojectwastrulytheirs.Allparticipantsalsoreceivedreferralinformationaswellasourassurancethatfollowupwouldoccurandthatifassistancewasneeded,wewouldendeavortoprovideit.


NorthernBeachesThemajorityofourstudentsachievedtheircertificateoneintheirchosenframeworkcourse.ThosestudyingAgrifoodsandBrickandBlocklayingcompletedtheirWHSwhitecardtrainingwhichallowsallparticipantstoworksafelyonabuildingsite.SurfLifeSavingdeliveredacoursewherealltheparticipantsreceivedaCPRandEmergencyCarecertificate.OnourLinkstoLeaningCareerDaysallstudentshavehadachancetofindopportunitiesfromthefollowingorganisations:

Overall,theengagementofourpartneringorganisationsandschoolswasexcellent.Beforedecisionsweremadeoncoursesweshouldrun,wehadameetingwiththeDepartmentofEducationtodeterminewhatcourseswereneededandwhatwerebeingprovidedbyotherorganisations.Webuildourprogrammearoundtheregionsneed.AllotheragenciesincludingtheRegisteredTrainingOrganisationsinvolvedwereexcellent.Theywereopenwiththeirfeedbackandoftenofferedwaysinwhichtoengagedspecificparticipantsthatwereperhapsontheedge.Allinall,itwastherelationshipbetweenourprogrammecoordinator,AshlingO’BrienandsupportofficerPeterMerryfulandthestudentswhichdeterminedasuccessfultransitionaloutcomeintheformofaplan..Itisthispersonalengagementonaregularbasiswhichdevelopedasturdyrapportwiththeparticipantsandmadethemfeellikethesiteandprojectwastrulytheirs.Allparticipantsalsoreceivedreferralinformationaswellasourassurancethatfollowupwouldoccurandthatifassistancewasneeded,wewouldendeavortoprovideit.Manyofourstudentshavegonebacktoschoolwithagreaterideaofwhatdirectiontheywanttoheadinlife.Twoofourstudentswentstraightintoapprenticeships.Severalapprenticeshipshavebeenlinedupforstudentstocommenceearlynextyear.Allstudentshavereceivedapostcompletionfollowupandhaveapathwayplanfortheirdesiredfuture.
