Industrial Ethernet

Over the past 20 years or so Ethernet has evolved to become

the standard network technology for the office and IT

environments. The compatibility of components from different

manufacturers has been a contributing factor. Technical

performance and reliability have also played a role in this trend.

This has resulted in a wide range of inexpensive and efficient

components and systems, and hence significant benefits for

users.

The majority of current Ethernet standards represent fully-

developed technology. A quick overview of the development

of Ethernet standards might look something like this:

1980 Standard „Ethernet V1.0“ (DEC, Intel, Xerox)

1982 Standard IEEE 802.3: „Yellow cable Ethernet“

1986 „Cheap-Ethernet“ (10BASE2)

1991 „Ethernet on Twisted-Pair“ (10BASE-T)

1995 Fast Ethernet (100BASE-T)

1998 Gigabit-Ethernet

2000 Ethernet IP

2001 Power link

2002 10 Gigabit-Ethernet

PROFINET

Ethercat

Industrial users have also recognised the advantages of bus

technologies and network solutions. For example, the 1990s

saw the development of fieldbus standards heavily based on

specific manufacturer’s specifications, and thus not compatible

with each other. From the point of view of their technical

development, these systems are without doubt very stable

these days, but the user is limited in the selection of a Fieldbus

system to only a few manufacturers. It is only possible to

change systems with great cost and with significant effort for

the training of personnel.

So why do we need Industrial Ethernet when the established

systems still work? There are a number of reasons for this:

enables system interoperability

Production data is directly accessible in the office

environment without the need for interfaces

opportunities for a variety of applications (for example,

the transmission of images or the parallel use of network

resources).

interfaces for machines setup and maintenance, for example

Ethernet will continue to benefit from new developments in

the enormous IT network infrastructure market.

The possibilities for WLAN applications here are surely only

the beginning.

Industrial Ethernet is evolving into the dominant standard for

industrial network technology. With a universally applicable

technical standard as the basis, manufacturers can combine

networks and their components. Weidmüller can provide users

with long-lasting, maintenance-free electrical connections. With

traditional products for switching cabinets but also innovative

and standardised components for industrial networks.

Cable configurator

Cable configurator

The cable configurator allows you to configure your specific

order – and ready.

Make your selection from the list of available cables (material

for cable sheathing, category, colour, …). Then choose the

connector for the right and left cable end. Then choose the

cable length. Configurations which are not possible are marked

in red, so that it is not possible to create an unsupported or

wrong configuration.

A variety of cables and connectors are available from our

Industrial Ethernet product line. These selections include category

5 or 7 cable, with PVC sheathing, in PUR, and of course

PROFINET-specific cable. A number of versions are available on

PushPull (V4) versions, bayonet (V1) and RockStar®

The fibre-optic cable is configured similarly: simply choose the

your customized cable. IP67 versions are also available here.

After you have made your selection, there are several available

options:

for quote or order.

The cable configurator is your quickest path to finding the specific

industrial Ethernet cable which you need.

Whether you are looking for a fibre-optic or copper cable, the

wconfigurator will find it for you.

Introduction

Industrial Ethernet – Active components

Intelligent data distribution in the electrical cabinet:

unmanaged and managed switches.

Many applications require a central switch in the switching

cabinet for the decentralized setup of industrial networks.

Unmanaged switches are the simplest entry point into the world

of Industrial Ethernet They are self-configuring and allow you to

quickly and conveniently setup industrial network infrastructures.

Managed high-performance switches can be used to control

the flow of data for complex demands. Simple web-interface

configuration is possible by means of the integrated software

program, or with a terminal emulation program using an RS232

or USB port.

Weidmüller offers all versions from 3–24 ports, in various

shapes, for the ideal fit regardless of the installation

requirements. Switches with fibre optic ports are also available

for transmission paths which are very long or stretches exposed

to high electromagnetic interference. Weidmüller also delivers

versions for the electrical cabinet and versions with IP67 housing

for use directly „in the field“. Industrial-standard versions are

available, as are versions with an extended temperature range

(-40 to +75°C). Naturally, these products comply with all relevant

industrial and application testing standards.

Secure gateways between networks: the router and the

GPRS alarm modem.

Routers are anywhere when multiple networks need to be

connected together. Routers are responsible not only for

connecting the networks but also for securing them by

regulating access to nodes and data within the networks. In

addition to Ethernet routers, Weidmüller offers routers for

establishing connections on top of public networks, whether

they are the Internet or (analogue, digital or wireless) telephone

networks. If required, Weidmüller can also deliver turnkey

„out-of-the-box“ solutions for the remote monitoring of industrial

facilities.

Transformation and adaptation: the media converter,

ComServer and WLAN bridge.

Weidmüller offers a comprehensive line of network components

for adapting and converting interfaces: the ComServer can be

used when devices which lack their own Ethernet interface need

to be connected to the net.Media converters allow you to adapt

existing interfaces by converting a copper interface to fibre-

optic, or vice versa. WLAN bridges allow you to establish

wireless connections between network nodes.

Approvals and Certifications

In order to be adequately prepared for harsh industrial condi-

tions, our products have been tested for compliance with the

PLC standard IEC 61131-2:2007.

The Standard IEC 61131-2 for PLCs is entitled „Programmable

Logic Controllers – Part 2: Equipment Requirements and Tests“.

It describes requirements pertaining to EMC (electromagnetic

compatibility), shock and vibration resistance, and environmental

temperatures. These limit values in the IEC standard are fairly

similar to the requirements we have encountered in the real

world. Our products comply with the following basic standards

Introduction

An overview of PROFINET and EtherNet/IP components

PROFINET Class A

A great demand for communication exists within machines and

facilities that have a decentralized, modular design. PROFINET

can be used as a communication technology in such a setting.

PROFINET is the open Industrial Ethernet standard from the

PROFIBUS User Organization. It enables corporate-wide

communication and automation. There are two fundamental

functional classes within PROFINET. The first is PROFINET CBA

(Component Based Automation). This is the original version

based on a component model for communicating between

intelligent automation devices (for example programmable logic

controllers or PLCs). The second is PROFINET IO and is used

for decentralized peripherals. This newer technology is designed

for communications between controllers and decentralized field

devices.

EtherNet/IP

EtherNet/IP (Ethernet Industrial Protocol) is an open standard

that was developed by Rockwell Automation and the Open

DeviceNet Vendor Association (ODVA) for industrial networks.

EtherNet/IP is based on the Ethernet TCP/IP standards and the

Common Industrial Protocol (CIP). CIP is an open standard

implemented at the application layer (ISO layer 7). It is used in

ControlNetTM and DeviceNetTM. This enables continuous

communications between the field level and the Internet. The

protocol includes both a control mechanism for cyclic, real-time

I/O signal transmission (implicit messaging) and an information

mechanism for configuration, diagnosis and management

messages (explicit messaging).

PrintJet PRO

The PrintJet PRO inkjet printer prints markers for electric

connectivity. These markers can be used for clear equipment

identification on devices, cables and connectors. The labelling

makes servicing, maintenance and troubleshooting much easier.

Water-based ink is used for the black or spot colour printing.

The print is crystal clear and resistant to environmental influences.

The PrintJet PRO prints plastic markers in MultiCard format. In

combination with the user-friendly M-Print® PRO software and

the attached loader, the printer becomes an essential part of

the production. The inkjet process being used, the subsequent

fusing, as well as the printer cartridge and ink have all been

specially adapted by Weidmüller for industrial use. The printer

has excellent long-term use capabilities, thanks to its integrated

loader.

Switches without management functions

Unmanaged switches

Switches are the heart of an Industrial Ethernet network

infrastructure

Lack of predictability of the timing behaviour was for a long

time used as an argument against the use of Ethernet in

industrial applications. However, this reasoning was in most

cases based on experience with early network topologies in

which the network users were interconnected via so-called

hubs. A hub forwards all the packets received at one port to

all the other ports. Such networks use the CSMA/CD method

(Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detect) to specify

who may transmit and when.

In the CSMA method the station wishing to transmit listens

to the channel (carrier sensing) before it transmits data. A

station may transmit only when the transmission medium is

not already being used by another station. If the transmission

medium is in use, the station waits until it is free before sending

its data. Owing to the signal propagation delays, it can never-

theless happen that two devices transmit simultaneously. In

order to avoid a loss of data in a collision case, both transmit ters

must be able to detect the collision (collision detect) and

retransmit their data packets after an arbitrarily selected delay.

CSMA/CD is the customary standard for 10-Mbit networks with

hubs.

Early Ethernet network topologies, some of which are still

in use today, use hubs as standard because the complex

switches produced in the 1980s and early 1990s were very

expensive.

Plug & Play switches – ECO Line and WaveLine

The ECO Line and WaveLine from Weidmüller are cost-effective

ways of gaining a foothold in the world of Industrial Ethernet.

Ongoing adap-tation of our products to new technologies and

the needs of our customers, enables users to set up network

infrastructures for industrial applications simply and quickly.

The ECO Line products require absolutely no configuration and

for many products even the pin assignment of the connecting

cables is flexible thanks to their auto-crossover functionality

(Auto-MDI/X). This means that they can use straight-through

cables for connections between switches and terminal devices

and also for connections between switches, making crossover

cables no longer obligatory.

With its coherent housing design, the impressive WaveLine can

be integrated together with up to eight copper ports and one

optional fibre-optic connection. With an optionally extendable

temperature range – from 0 °C...60 °C to –20 °C...60 °C – the

WaveLine is suitable for a wide range of applications.

Plug & Play switches – AdvancedLine

When the demands are even greater, then we recommend

Weidmüller’s AdvancedLine. In addition to the new features of

the WaveLine, the switches of the AdvancedLine provide further

benefits for applications in tough conditions:

usage range from –40 to 75 °C. This allows their use in rooms

without climate control and operation outside of the normal

temperate zone.

ensure trouble-free operation even over long distances

through strong electromagnetic fields and are available in

multimode or singlemode versions.

enables existing units to be exchanged for new ones with

more ports without having to shift all the other components

on the rail or having to extend the switching cabinet

housing.

The decentralised structure of industrial networks means that

many applications require a central switch in the switching

cabinet. A Weidmüller IE-SWxx-M high-performance Industrial

Ethernet managed switch is ideal for such applications.

The AdvancedLine managed switches are enclosed in a strong

aluminium housing. Connections are available for power supply,

relay contact and signalling contacts. The device also features

optionally 8, 16, or 24 Ethernet ports. Up to two of these are

fibre-optic ports for single-mode or multi-mode cable.

The WaveLine managed switches feature up to eight ports in a

very small space enclosed in a compact plastic housing. They are

available with or without I/Os.

LEDs on the front provide the necessary optical indications. The

port LEDs remain permanently on to indicate a connection and

flash during data transmissions. Furthermore, they change colour

to indicate the data rate: green indicates 100 Mbps and yellow

10 Mbps. The green “Power” LED remains on permanently to

indicate a constant power supply. The green “Status” LED is

normally permanently green, but switches to red to signal a fault,

provided the “Link monitoring” function is active.

Weidmüller’s managed switches enable industry networks to be

optimally structured for handling transport routes and network

traffic throughput. The individual network components are

interconnected in a hierarchical, physical star-type network.

The main distributor, in this case a high-performance Industrial

Ethernet switch, represents the central switching point in this

network.

All switches from Weidmüller are protocol-transparent. Every port

forms its own network segment, its own collision domain. The entire

network bandwidth is available to each one of these segments. This

increases not only the network performance across the entire

network, but also in every individual segment. The switch examines

every incoming packet for the MAC address of the destination

segment and can then forward it directly to its destination.

The great advantage of Weidmüller switches is their ability to

interconnect their ports directly.

Port-Trunking

Port-Trunking enables users to combine two or more ports on two

Ethernet devices to form a group. This group then behaves like a

“single logical link”, but with a correspondingly higher data rate.

Furthermore, port trunking provides redundancies with a very fast

recovery time. If a link in the trunk group fails, the remaining links

take over immediately in order to maintain the data exchange

between the two switches.

Port-Mirroring

Port mirroring enables users to mirror – in other words copy –

at one port all the data transmitted or received at one or more,

other ports of the Managed Switches. The messages sent to the

mirrored port can be filtered, e.g. by way of MAC addresses.

VLAN

The abbreviation VLAN stands for “Virtual Local Area Network”.

This is a network structure with all the properties of a conventional

LAN, but without any physical connections. VLANs are generally

switched networks that can link more remote nodes to form a

virtual local network. The VLAN function enables a network to be

split into various segments. It is possible to combine servers and

workstations into dynamic workgroups according to their function.

VLANs can be set up transparently and without any physical

changes to the network and can be configured like multiple virtual

local networks.

VLANs are broadcast domains that can also extend over several

switches. The broadcast traffic is then only visible in the respective

VLAN. This possibility of completely isolating VLANs from one

another helps to increase the security of data transmissions.

Consequently, the data is sent only to the Ethernet devices within

one VLAN group. Once the VLAN function has been activated, a

VLAN frame can be sent only to one port belonging to this VLAN

within the VLAN. If the destination port belongs to a different VLAN,

the frame is deleted. It is also possible to assign a port to several

VLANs simultaneously. This type of structure enables networks to

share one router or server.

VLANs combine the advantages of bridges and routers.

Consequently, it is easy to add, delete or modify a station.

Furthermore, the network can have any structure. For example, it is

possible to set up virtual user groups. It is no longer

necessary to assign users to various subnetworks just because

of the great physical distances between them. Servers housed in

central locations can be assigned to distant workgroups.

IE-SWxx-M switches support two types of VLAN:

Managed switches also permit static entries in addition to the

“learning” of addresses in the forwarding table or the address

table. These entries remain in the table permanently and are not

subject to the aging process.

Quality of Service

The Quality of Service (QoS) function permits a QoS priority to

be used in every Ethernet frame. The priority depends on the

port from which the frame originates.

Differential relay

The AdvancedLine managed switches also feature a relay

connection. This can be used to monitor individual events on the

network. The relay can signal an outage or the presence of a link

on one or multiple ports.

Browse Address Table

The “browse address table” function enables the display of the

entire address table or the localisation of a MAC address. Select

the type of search (sequence or MAC address) and afterwards the

“find” function. This function is useful for obtaining an overview of

all MAC addresses. The ports belonging to the MAC addresses

are also displayed.

SNMP-Management

The SNMP protocol enables the monitoring, controlling and

administration of networks. According to the model of SNMP

architecture, the network is divided into network management

stations and network components. The network management

stations host applications for the monitor and control of network

components.

IGMP-Snooping

IGMP snooping controls the switch when join requests appear on

the port for a multicast group. When this happens, the particular

port is incorporated into the forward table for this group. This

reduces the net load, since the switch does not flood all ports with

multicast traffic.

DHCP Client

Specially-configured servers, such as Weidmüller‘s Router Series,

can assign dynamic IP addresses and other network parameters

to network components. This is done with the DHCP protocol

(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). Our managed switches

can either receive a fixed, static IP address, or a DHCP server can

assign them an IP address.

Diffserv

When using Diffserv (Differentiated Services), every IP packet is

tested to determine its priority. In contrast to the Quality of Service,

the priority is already determined here by the sender. Thus the

path to the receiver is optimized and forwarded with preference.

Our WaveLine switches come optionally with two digital IOs (input

and output). After the IOs are configured, network parameters can

be monitored with the managed switch. An uninterruptible power

supply (UPS) can also be connected to the IOs. If the supply

voltage fails, the switch changes over to the battery on the UPS.

The signal output wired to the WaveLine managed switch can

issue an SNMP trap to a Scada system running on a network

server. In addition, the IO output activates an alarm light on the

outside of the electrical cabinet so that the power outage can be

easily seen. No PLC is required.

Redundancy in the Industrial Ethernet

Two schemes have become established for achieving network

redundancy in Industrial Ethernet applications.

Ring topology is the simplest and quickest way of achieving net-

work redundancy. The lack of a standard led to the development

of RapidRing™ technology. This provides industrial automation

engineers with a simple and effective way of achieving redun-

dancy. RapidRing™ provides redundancy against a single fault.

The devices combined to form a ring are wired like a real logical

ring. As the ring structure would lead to a loop in the network,

one link is logically deactivated (backup link).

The IEEE standard “Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol” (RSTP,

IEEE 802.3w) is the other option for achieving redundancy in

a network. RSTP renders possible a net-like structure which

enables multiple redundancy to be achieved. RSTP is not as

easy to use as RapidRing™, but RSTP does offer many

interesting options.

Both systems have their advantages in particular applications.

In industrial automation it is often very simple to wire ring

structures. Operating RSTP in a ring of 15 or more switches

will lead to unsatisfactory data rates. But the use of RapidRing™

in such an installation results in switching times < 300 ms, and

larger rings are also possible.

RapidRing™ is easy to use. Firstly, one switch is selected to be

the master and is configured as such. The other switches in the

network are configured as slaves. Ports 1 and 2 are always

used to connect the ring. Port 1 of one switch is connected to

port 2 of the next switch in the redundant ring. This connection

scheme leads to a logical ring. After switching on the network,

the network is ready for operation.

The backup link is always connected to port 2 of the master

switch, which allows the backup links to be predefined. The

master can therefore be chosen to optimise the network

throughput. If a connection in the ring is interrupted, the backup

link takes over its function and so communications are not

subjected to long interruptions. Once the defective link has

been restored, the backup link is automatically deactivated.

The status of the ring can be interrogated via the Web server

of every switch involved. MIB data is made available via the

SNMP for remote interrogation and automatic processing in

a dedicated section.

The RSTP standard is a further development of the Spanning

Tree Protocol (STP, IEEE 802.1D). The RSTP configures the

network in such a way that there are no loops. Various redun-

dant connections (backup links) offer multiple redundancy. The

switches connected to the RSTP exchange information via the

network in Bridge Protocol Data Units (BPDU). An interrupted

link is therefore quickly replaced. Modifications within the

network are detected automatically.

RSTP is ideal for complex networks with more than one connec-

tion. As several possible paths exist in the network, RSTP must

always analyse the network fully. That leads to switchover times

> 300 ms. Indeed, in large and complex networks the switchover

time can run into several seconds.

A network with RSTP should be very carefully planned and

conceived, otherwise unexpected behaviour could be the result.

Configuration

IE-SWxx-M managed switches can be configured with a terminal

program but also via a Web interface at the integral, interactive

Web server. Every Internet-compatible PC in the local network

can have access to this Web server. The Web server is compa-

tible with the latest versions of Internet Explorer (7.0 or higher)

and Firefox (3 or higher). This method of confi guration enables

remote switches to be configured.

The following settings are possible:

or disabled

SNMP traps are messages that are transmitted when a “trap

event” occurs. Up to four trap receivers can be specified. The

IE-SWxx-M switches support traps for the link-up, link-down,

confirmation error, cold restart and warm restart functions.

Refer to Chapter W for a description of the connection

possibilities for redundant power supplies.

The IE-SWxx-M managed switches can be monitored via SNMP

and console menus. The following are just some of the functions

available:

Port error packets statistics can be generated for every port.

This contains information regarding:

IP67 switches

8-port switch in IP67

Switches are the central components of a network. They prevent

data collision, allow rapid packet switching and enhance data

throughput. Not only do Weidmüller switches meet the demands

placed on the Fast Ethernet with its transmission rate of up

to 100 Mbit/s, but they are also downward compatible with

the older networks that have a transmission rate of 10 Mbit/s

(IEEE 802.3). They recognise the speed automatically.

Weidmüller’s unmanaged switches are Plug & Play devices for

easy installation of Ethernet networks. They do not need to be

either configured or parameterised.

Weidmüller’s managed switches enable industry networks to

be structured in order to optimise transport routes and times

for network traffic. The various network components are cabled

together hierarchically in a physical star. The main distributor in

the field, in this case the Industrial Ethernet switch

IE-SW-8-M-IP67, is the central switching point. All Weidmüller

switches are protocol transparent. Each port forms both a

network segment and a collision domain that are intrinsic to the

port itself. The entire network bandwidth is available to each of

these segments. This results in enhanced network performance

not only over the network as a whole, but also in each individual

segment. The switch examines each packet passing through for

the MAC address of the target segment and is able to forward

it directly there.

Decentralised I/O remotes

The EtherNet/IP system

Max. bus extension (m) Data rate (Mbps)

100 10

100 100

Principle

EtherNet/IP (Ethernet Industrial Protocol) is an open standard

that was developed by Rockwell Automation and the Open

DeviceNet Vendor Association (ODVA) for industrial networks.

EtherNet/IP is based on the Ethernet TCP/IP standards and

the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP).

CIP an open standard that is implemented in ISO layer 7, and

is also used for ControlNet™ and DeviceNet™ installations.

This enables continuous communications between the field

level and the Internet. The protocol includes a control

component for cyclic, real-time-compatible I/O signal

transmission (implicit messaging) and an information

component for the configuration, diagnosis and management

messages (explicit messaging).

The I/O data uses the User Datagram Protocol/Internet Protocol

(UDP/IP) and the information data uses TCP/IP protocols.

The IEEE802.3 standard is incremented on layers 1 and 2

(physical media and data link respectively).

Addressing

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is used to

assign addresses to modules in EtherNet/IP networks.

Network structure

Like Standard Ethernet, EtherNet/IP installations are also wired

with a star structure. The star structure is characterised by a

central signal distributor (switch) with individual connections to

all the network’s terminals. A line or tree structure can be set up

with the help of a 3-port switch in the device or in the proximity

of each device.

Weidmüller can supply products for the network infrastructure –

please refer to our Industrial Ethernet catalogue.

Transmission rate

The transmission rate is 10 or 100 Mbps. Weidmüller modules

detect the transmission rate automatically and set themselves

accordingly. The maximum length of the bus cable is the same

for both transmission rates.

The following table can serve as a guide for bus installations

complying with the standard:

Modbus TCP

Max. bus extension (m) Data rate (Mbps)

100 10

100 100

Principle

Modbus TCP is a fieldbus system for automation technology

based on Ethernet TCP/IP. It has been accepted by the Internet

Engineering Task Force (IETF) as a draft RFC standard and has

been made available for all to use by Schneider Automation.

Modbus TCP is based on Modbus, a well established industrial

application protocol. The Modbus object models remain

unchanged.

A connection is set up via TCP/IP by the server (e.g. I/O

device) being addressed via port number 502. Commands are

initiated by the client (Master) and executed by the server (slave).

The length of a Modbus telegram is max. 256 bytes.

Network structure

Like Standard Ethernet, Modbus TCP installations are also wired

with a star structure. The star structure is characterized by a

central signal distributor (switch) with individual connections to

all the network’s terminals. A line or tree structure can be set up

with the help of a 3-port switch in the device or in the proximity

of each device.

Weidmüller can supply products for the network infrastructure –

please refer to our Industrial Ethernet catalogue.

Addressing

The addressing is carried out via a BOOTP (Internet Bootstrap

Protocol) inquiry via the client, using the Dynamic Host

Configuration Protocol (DHCP), or the user can set the IP

address with a software tool.

Bus extension/transmission rate

The transmission rate is 10 or 100 Mbps. Weidmüller modules

detect the transmission rate automatically and set themselves

accordingly. The maximum length of the bus cable is the same

for both transmission rates.

The following table can serve as a guide for bus installations

complying with the standard:

Principal function

PROFINET is the open Industrial Ethernet standard for

automation from PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI).

Profinet implements TCP/IP and IT standards. It is capable of

real-time Ethernet and can integrate fieldbus systems.

The Profinet design is distinguished mainly by the type of data

exchange used to meet the speed requirements.

The are two Profinet perspectives – Profinet-CBA and

Profinet-IO:

component-based communications via TCP/IP and real-time

communications for the real-time demands of modular systems

engineering. Both communication channels can be used in

parallel.

synchronous communication (IRT: isynchronous real-time)

with decentralized peripheral devices. The designations RT

and IRT only describe the real-time characteristics of the

communication within the Profinet-IO.

Process data and alarms within the Profinet-IO are always

transmitted in real time (RT). Profinet „real time“ is based on the

definition from the IEEE and IEC. This specifies that only a

limited time is allowed within a bus cycle for the execution of

real-time services.

This RT communication is the basis for Profinet-IO data

exchange. Real-time data is handled with a higher priority than

TCP(UDP)/IP data packets. RT is the foundation for real-time

communications in the decentralized peripheral zone. Bus cycle

times in the 2–6 ms range are possible with this data exchange

mechanism.

Addressing

Module addresses for the Profinet-IO are assigned automatically

using DCP (the discovery configuration protocol).

Network structure

With the integration of a managed, two-port switch in all Profinet

modules, it is then possible to implement linear, star or tree

network topologies.

Transmission rate

The transmission rate is 100 Mbit/s. The maximum segment

length is 100 m.

Security Router

Routers – the gateways between Ethernet worlds

Suppose that you are at your place of work in Stuttgart and

need to compare the indicator data sets coming from your

manufacturing sites in the Middle East. You then dial in,

download the data, save it on your password-protected system

and then you‘re ready. But how can you be sure that you are the

only person who is currently accessing this data? Information

transmitted over the Internet is just as safe as a message in a

bottle.

Anyone with a bit of know-how can capture this data and you

may never have the slightest clue of this abuse.Damages

resulting from spying, sabotage and other abuse of sensitive

data have already reached unprecedented levels. Should we

then avoid using public networks all together for industrial

uses?We at Weidmüller have worked on this problem in depth.

We have developed a new technology that provides smart and

reliable defence against external dangers. We have created a

new data communication path which establishes a new level of

security, reliability and user-friendliness.

The two typical applications for routers are:

to simplify configuration

Separation of Ethernet networks in the factory

An industrial manufacturing network or an industrial machine

network and a typical office network use the same Ethernet

standard but are nevertheless totally different. Whereas in the

office network larger volumes of data and the associated

sluggishness of the network is completely acceptable, an

excessively long response time in an industrial network can lead

to downtimes and malfunctions. Complete isolation of the two

networks is inadvisable, and for the first time there is the chance

of using the same network for all procedures in the company.

Procedures become more transparent, the management and

technical workloads can be reduced. The exchange of data is

considerably simplified and decidedly more efficient.

There are many options for isolating and prioritising network

data, e.g. VLAN, QoS for layer 2, etc. A router can provide an

option for filtering the data on the IP layer (layer 3). Features

such as integral firewall, Network Address Translation (NAT),

Port Address Translation (PAT) and remote access via a

modem turn such a router into an efficient aid for achieving

separation between networks.

Only authorised users can access the protected network from

outside and only certain, enabled devices can transmit data

out of the protected network. The NAT/PAT feature enables a

machine with its own IP subnetwork and several network users

to remain concealed from the outside world behind a unique IP

address. Access routines to the IP address from outside are

automatically forwarded to a predefined IP address in the

network behind the router. In this way the device can remain

accessible from outside but only as required. The option of

concealing a complete machine behind an IP address reduces

the installation and management workloads for the machine

user.

In addition, the router can be selected via an external modem,

thus enabling access to the router and the machine beyond,

without compromising the corporate network. Such access

routines are carried out via PPP and PAP or Callback with

Virtual Private Network (VPN). This means that a high security

level can always be guaranteed.

One for all -

The Weidmüller „Configurator“ Device Management Tool

Managing the firmware updates or backing up configurations

for a variety of different devices can be a problematic and slow

undertaking. Device manufacturers offer different utilities for

their different product lines, and these often have differing user

interfaces.

In order to solve this problem, Weidmüller has introduced the

„Configurator“ device management tool. It serves as a general

foundation for managing and configuring WaveLine routers and

a variety of other devices.

To briefly summarize, the Configurator enables:

datasheets

The Configurator is available for Windows and Linux. It

requires no installation. The software can simply be unpacked

and started. The only system requirement is that you have Java

Runtime, version 1.5 or later, installed.

The configurator organizes data into projects. A project can

consist of multiple locations which can represent the structure of

the current facility structure or differing workshops. The software

also enables devices to be grouped together in logical groups.

You can represent these groups in a logical structure, with

classifications such as „All border routers from manufacturing

units“. The Configurator presents a shared „look and feel“ for the

central management of firmware and configurations. It can be

used for a large number of the industrial Ethernet products from

Weidmüller. The administrator can then focus on the complete

management of the network. He must no longer be worried

about the particulars for each individual tool.

Refer to Chapter W for a description of the connection

possibilities for redundant power supplies.

Security Router

Routers – gateways between Ethernet worldsWe Bring Top-level Security to the Net

Industrial networks and office networks run on the same

Ethernet standards, and yet they are totally different:

while large amounts of data and, as a result, a certain

“inertia” of the network are totally acceptable in office

networks, excessive response times may lead to stalling,

errors, hence to the generation of considerable costs, in

industrial networks.

Communication networks used for office applications and for

automation are converging. The advantages that result from this

process are put into practice more and more frequently because

they make procedures more transparent and facilitate data

exchange substantially.

Weidmüller Industrial Routers ensure that different networks

interoperate in unison and with top-level security.

Customer’s Network

Router Configurator: remote access from around the

world to your router for maintenance and support

To customize the routers in order to get the optimum out of

them, you can choose to tailor them exactly to your needs via

a web browser, via SNMP, or using Weidmüller’s management

software called “Configurator.”

The “Configurator” allows reliable remote maintenance of your

systems around the world. Updating the software on a full set

of routers, supporting and managing their performance is done

conveniently and securely from your office.

The Security Datasheet

... assists you with the configuration. It describes the way the

firewall has to behave to ensure that the connected systems

can work normally. You no longer need to worry about technical

details, such as ports. The configuration software does this job

for you. A few mouse clicks is all it takes to have your firewall

ready for operation.

Intelligent Firewall: Stateful Package Inspection

Our routers ship with firewalls that adapt automatically to the

network traffic they see (Stateful Package Inspection). They

recognize the messages that are stateful, i.e., legitimized,

and let them pass. Unidentified packets are kept out of your

industrial networks.

To frustrate eavesdroppers,

the router transmits your data encrypted.

Weidmüller Routers for VPNs enable access to components

ensuring top-level security with minimum effort.

Pathfinder on the net: OSPF (Open Shortest Path First)

OSPF is the dynamic routing protocol within a system that

describes the status of the gateways connecting to data

networks. The salient feature of the protocol is its rapid and

dynamic response to changes in the network structure.

Customer’s Network www Firewall Production System

Port forwarding, NAT, and masquerading

The router is capable of translating addresses between

networks. That’s how, for instance, all devices of one system

can be masqueraded behind a single router. Someone attacking

over the network (e.g., the internet) can see only the router,

while all the devices behind it are hidden from the outside world

to protect them.

Weidmüller’s innovative router technologies are there to avoid

that your data have “queue up.” OSPF is the reliable and

Virtual Mapping with Weidmüller’s Router

Additional Features for Convenient Data Communications

Virtual mapping—or, NAT—enables you to operate simultaneously

several identically configured networks behind routers equipped

with NAT capabilities. The system engineer can hide the system

behind the router and needs not adjust its IP configuration. This

Modem

Weidmüller Routers support modem connections for dial up

connections to the router. This feature is extremely valuable

for remote maintenance in situations where a direct connection

of the network to the internet is undesired. Different types

with built-in Analog-, ISDN- or GSM-modem are available,

alternatively an external modem can be connected.

Highspeed Routing

Based on his high performance architecture the Router is able

to forward data with nearly wire speed (100 Mbit/s). This is an

important feature for high speed applications and applications

with large data volumes.

The advantage of virtual mapping:

Two or more machine networks with the same configuration

can be connected to a superordinated network without any

changes.

allows using the system with the same configuration over and

over again. NAT is required as an alternative to port suffixes

Integrated Servers

The router provides additional network functionalities that

normally require a separate computer, for example automatic

addressing and automatic time serving and synchronization.

Dial on Demand and Callback

When a router is used to connect a network to the internet over

a modem, Dial on Demand comes in handy to cut costs. In this

configuration the router establishes a connection only when a

device in the network wants to download data from the internet.

When it is done, the router disconnects automatically.

Callback is often used for remote maintenance purposes. The

router dials a preset phone number, e.g., that of the system

manufacturer‘s service center. This means that the dial-up costs

are borne by the customer.

The advantages of virtual mapping:

– enables parallel operation of multiple identically-configured

networks behind NAT-technology routers

– Machine builders can hide machines behind a router

without needing to change the IP configuration,

– It is possible to always use the machines with the

identical configuration

– NAT as an alternative to port forwarding; necessary for

applications which can not form requests combining IP

addresses with port numbers (for example, some PLC

applications)

WaveLine router with digital IOs

Security Router

Our line of WaveLine routers are optionally available with digital

IOs. By means of digital inputs direct on the router, a service

request (for example) can be triggered directly by the machine

operator. The user can now switch the digital IOs with the press

of a button. The router can then dial up to the Internet if

necessary to deliver the alert.

It is also possible to use the digital input to completely lock the

WLAN port. With just the press of a button you can deactivate

all traffic with networks located behind the router. The required

parameters can be set using our Weidmüller Device

be installed wherever GSM mobile radio network reception is

are always accessible via a secure Internet link, are another

possible option that would eliminate the need for an expensive

means that you can avoid the installation of a land-line phone

link and the associated transmission costs.

In today‘s production facilities, it is often the case that only a

of your devices to be online all the time. No matter where your

personnel may be, the machine is reachable around the clock.

The IE-GPRS-I/O is also an attractive choice for manufacturers

of machinery and plants. Mobile access to the facility or plant

WLAN bridge

Weidmüller‘s WaveLine products can also link or extend your

industrial network with WLAN. Currently, wireless LAN can be

used for industrial manufacturing facilities; it is ideal for use

anywhere where traditional cabling is not suitable or where a

wireless connection is required. The WaveLine WLAN bridge is

ideal for gaining a foothold in Industrial Ethernet. It can be used

wherever end terminal devices have to be connected to your

Ethernet in the simplest way possible. The industry-standard

WLAN-BRIDGE-WAVE (with IP20 protection) features a compact

plastic housing (108 mm x 22.5 mm x 127.8 mm L/W/H) and

VO-class flammability. It can be used in temperatures ranging

from 0°C to 60°C. The module supports WLAN IEEE 802.11b/g

standards and can function interference-free in a production

facility. In addition, it features a 10 Base-T/100 Base-TX (copper)

network interface.

As delivered from the factory, the WLAN bridge comes with:

an RS232 interface (not electrically isolated), an RJ45 interface,

and an antenna The WLAN is capable of auto-negotiation and

auto-crossing (RJ45) and has a redundant power supply. The

WLAN bridge comes with a wide range built-in security: optional

end-to-end 128, 192 or 256-bit AES encryption, WPA-PSK/

TKIP*, and alternative 64/128-bit WEP/WPA2 encryption**.The

bridge is configured with a user-friendly, password-protected

interface which is accessible via the serial port or a web-based

interface. In addition, the thin WLAN bridge module can be

fastened to a mounting rail and comes with its own internal web

server. The module supports the following protocols: ARP, UDP,

TCP, Telnet, ICMP, SNMP, DHCP, BOOTP, Auto IP, HTTP, SMTP,

TFT. Three LEDs display the operational status: data rate,

power, and connection/activity.

* WPA authentication (Wi-Fi Protected Access) with pre-shared key (PSK - Preshared Key) and with TKIP

encryption (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) - also known as WPA-PSK/TKIP.

** WEP/WPA2 encryption (Wired Equivalent Privacy)/WI-Fi Protected Access 2. WPA2 is an implementation of the

principle functions described in the IEEE 802.11i security standard.

The integration of serial or Ethernet-compliant end

devices into an existing wireless LAN

Our WLAN bridge can be integrated into an existing wireless

LAN. The bridge is set to infrastructure mode and registers itself

in the corporate network at the access point.

Mobile remote maintenance enabled by the WLAN bridge

Our WLAN bridge makes it possible for technicians to carry out

remote maintenance and configuration on devices such as the

Siemens S7 PLC. The technician does not need to connect his

PC to the electrical cabinet or directly to the PLC to perform the

maintenance. Instead, he takes advantage of the WLAN bridge

to build a wireless connection to the PLC and carries out the

configuration remotely.

The WLAN bridge then becomes a client. It can integrate

machinery (for example, a forklift) into the network.

The Implementation

The Bluetooth gateway (master) functions as a slave in a

PROFIBUS-DP network or a DeviceNet™ network.

Together with the slaves, it is configured via GSD or EDS files.

Besides communication with bluetooth stations, the gateway

features an additional 12 digital inputs with M12 connectors.

Up to 31 Bluetooth masters can be operated within one

application. Each gateway can communicate with up to six of

its slaves using the WIRELESSopen protocol, which is based

COMServer

The WaveLine ComServer connects your serial interfaces to

your existing network infrastructure in the simplest way possible.

An Internet browser is used for the installation of serial and

network parameters. Similarly carried out over the Ethernet

interface, the configuration is simple and user-friendly. The

COMServer can be configured directly via the RS232 interface

or via the network. With web-based management, a remote

configuration is also possible. The IE-CS-1SERIAL-WAVE

WaveLine ComServer is available with an RS232 port (not

electrically isolated). The IE-CS-2SERIAL-WAVE WaveLine

ComServer comes with two RS232 ports ( RS232 and

RS-232/422/485 – electrically isolated).

Both types of WaveLine ComServers feature auto-negotiation

and auto-crossing (RJ45) functions as well as redundant power

Our COMServer enables you to integrate production facilities

(where, for example, only an RS232 interface is available) into

the corporate network. The Configurator and the configuration

software for the production facility can be installed on a remote

PC. The Configurator and the Com port redirector driver allow

you to configure the COMServer conveniently from a remote

supplies. The ComServer supports the following protocols:

TCP/IP, UDP/IP, DHCP, BOOTP, HTTP and AutoIP.

The Weidmüller WaveLine ComServer comes optionally with

the following ports: IE-CS-1SERIAL-WAVE with one RJ45, one

RS-232 and IE-CS-2SERIAL-WAVE with one RJ45, one RS-

232, one RS-232/485/422. The operational status of the power,

link activity and connection are displayed.

Both ComServer types (IP20 protection) have a compact build

(length: 108 mm, height: 127.8 mm, width: 22.5 mm or 45 mm).

The devices are enclosed in sturdy plastic housings and can be

simply snapped on to a TS35 mounting rail. They can operate in

temperatures ranging from 0 °C to 60 °C.

location. You can also setup communications with production

facilities remotely. This makes it possible to operate the plant in

your own network and to carry out maintenance on machinery

parts.

Serial media converter

It is possible to use our COMServer as an interface converter.

This enables the data from an RS232 device to be forwarded to

a computer on the corporate network. The illustration shows an

example application of this interface. For example, a scale

located in the warehouse only has a RS232 connection.

The goal is to integrate it into the corporate network and allow it

to access new software. For this, the COMServer can be put to

use as a data-exchange interface between the scale‘s RS232

port and the Ethernet.

Power Over Ethernet

Power-over-Ethernet injector

Thanks to its high component density, Weidmüller‘s new

Power-over-Ethernet injector can supply up to four Ethernet

end devices with power in compliance with the PoE standard.

The power supply can be located anywhere on the network,

regardless of whether an Ethernet switch is present. Power-

over-Ethernet makes it easy to retro-fit and expand your existing

Ethernet networks. A separate 48-V power source is not

required for Weidmüller‘s quadruple Power-over-Ethernet

injector. The PoE supply voltage is generated directly from the

existing 24-V supply in the electrical cabinet.

Note:

The PoE4 PoE injector allows you to connect up to four power-over-Ethernet

components. This allows you to easily implement plug-and-play power

supplies for your existing Ethernet networks. The main advantage of power-

over-Ethernet is that you can avoid using additional power supply cables.

This reduces the installation costs and decreases the downtime risk for the

end device.

With a sturdy aluminium housing, the AdvancedLine features a width of

only 45 mm for use in your Industrial Ethernet network. With IP20 protection

and a operating temperature range from –40°C to 75°C, this product line is

perfect for industrial applications.

M12 connection system

Weidmüller IE-LINE M12

Description

M12 is by far the most widespread connection method for

controller systems and field level connections M12 connections

have been used with success in the automation sector for about

thirty years. The M12 is trusted by users for its compact and

sturdy design. It is also available with IP67 protection in

compliance with EN 60529. IE organizations and associations

are now leading harmonization efforts regarding IP67

connections in Industrial Ethernet. These organizations agree on

the use of the M12 connector with the D-coded mating profile.

The Profibus User Organization (Profinet), Ethernet Powerlink

Standardization Group (Ethernet Powerlink), Modbus IDA

(Modbus) and ODVA (Ethernet/IP) all support the M12, D-coded

connection along side the RJ45 connection.

Application

M12, D-coded plug-in connectors and cables are used for

applications in harsh industrial environments – ideal for Ethernet

connections in class of protection IP 67 between devices on the

machine and in the switching cabinet, or in moving cable carriers.

Front panel interface

Communicating through the closed front panel of the

switchgear cabinet, by using Weidmüller‘s front panel

interface in IP65.

Access to the computer is typically via standardized interfaces

such as RJ45 and USB, in order to program and configure

the facility. With IPC however, this interface is located within

switchgear cabinet. Users must always first open the cabinet

door before servicing. In conjunction with our customers,

Weidmüller has developed an amazingly simple and practical

solution for accessing devices within the cabinet without

opening the cabinet door - the FrontCom® front panel interface.

The front panel interface also functions as a service flap through

which the standard interfaces are easily accessible externally.

Designed with IP65 protection, the front panel interface offers

a cover which can be closed and locked. You can thus raise

the level of security when needed and prevent access by a third

party. In addition, FrontCom® has an efficient and open design.

Customized interfaces and functions can be delivered

pre-assembled as adapter plates, on customer request. The

result is a quicker, simpler and more targeted approach to your

system‘s implementation, service, monitoring and expansion.

Because of a variety of available adapter solutions, FrontCom®

accepts different interfaces and can be variably adapted for your

application.

for clear equipment identification on devices,

cables and connectors. The labelling makes

servicing, maintenance and troubleshooting much

easier. Water-based ink is used for the black or

spot colour printing. The print is crystal clear and

resistant to environmental influences.

The PrintJet PRO prints plastic markers in

MultiCard format. In combination with the

userfriendly M-Print® PRO software and the

attached loader, the printer becomes an essential

used, the subsequent fusing, as well as the printer

cartridge and ink have all been specially adapted

by Weidmüller for industrial use. The printer has

excellent long-term use capabilities, thanks to its
