Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences 8th Annual Prize Giving Ceremony, 23th January 2013

Welcome to the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences 8th Annual Prize Giving Ceremony.

Every year the Faculty sees the graduation of close to a thousand students, all of whom are well celebrated at the graduation ceremonies in the summer. The Faculty takes great pride in all of their achievements. But in every graduating cohort there is also a smaller group of students across all the courses that we offer that have shown themselves capable of some exceptional and outstanding work, of ‘going that extra mile’ in their academic efforts.

Today it gives us great pleasure to celebrate and applaud their success and award the various prizes for which they have been nominated. These prizes are offered as a token of appreciation by the Faculty, the University and sponsors from professional bodies, the business community and charitable trusts, for excellent performances in the full range of Departments in the Faculty:

• ArtsandMedia; • Culture,WritingandPerformance; • Education; • Law; • Psychology; • SocialSciences; • Urban,EnvironmentandLeisure Studies.

We are also here to acknowledge and salute the invaluable support provided by friends and families of our outstanding students. We welcome you all and are pleased you want to join us in this evening’s celebrations, and in wishing our students every success in the future.

Esmond Robinson Scholarship 2012/13This scholarship is funded by Helen Prenn in memory of her son Esmond Robinson. It funds a place on LSBU’s highly regarded MSc in Addiction Psychology & Counselling. Ms Prenn explains, “Having had a drug problem in his early life, Esmond devoted the last drug-free part of his life to helping addicts free themselves from their habits and stay drug free. I want this scholarship and future ones to enable Esmond’s work to continue. This scholarship provides an opportunity for students accepted onto the course but who can’t afford to fund it themselves.”

Department of Arts and Media Executive Dean’s PrizeOutstanding Achievement in Subject (Final Year Student)Callum ReadBA (Hons) Music and Sonic Media, Year 3, Full-timeCallum Read is an multi-talented graduate of BA(Hons) Music and Sonic Media, who has demonstrated a highly perceptve approach to both conceptual research and production work. Although a lead guitarist in a band, he has chosen audio books as his medium, rather than music production. This may well be related to a desire to address Dyslexia in a creative manner. Already during his second year, he proved himself an excellent project manager, directing the script and actor, producing the sound design, research appropriate music researchand, finally, creatingthefinalsoundmix.Duringhisfinalyear, the notion of the audio book was taken further, to become a convincing fantasy radio show that mixes narrative drama, advertsing and jingles in one excellent sound production. In addition, his 1st class Dissertation offers a challenging approach to the heavy metal music genre and gained special praise from the External Examiner. The course team is convinced that, with his professional and imaginative approach to this work, Callum will go far in his career as creative sound producer and will thereby be an ambassador for our faculty for years to come. Hillegonda Rietveld

Course Director’s Prize: Digital Media ArtsOutstanding AchievementAndrew LoganBA (Hons) Digital Media Arts, Year 3, Full-timeAndrew Logan has performed solidly throughout his three years on the BA (Hons) Digital Media Arts degree, demonstrating an excellent level of professionalism and studentship. In his Major Project, his work was predominantly self-directed, and he took on the creative and technical challenge of producing an iPad application to help children share their stories. Pursuing this interest in storytelling, his dissertation focused on analysing the relationship between immersion and storytelling in roll play games. He combines a love of coding with an aesthetic and practical application in his creative work, and this will be an asset for future projects he undertakes.Tahera Aziz

Course Director’s Prize: Game CulturesOutstanding AchievementJoshua CondisonBA (Hons) Game Cultures, Year 3, Full-timeIt’s not often that one associates the conception of spirituality with the practice of making videogames. However, Joshua Condison’s remarkablefinalyeargamesprojectRedemptiondemonstratedthe capacity videogames have for tackling religious subject matter. Further, Redemption’s unique and visually arresting art style subverts the players’ expectations of the traditional game platform mechanic. The game, thus, provokes deep thought, and as such, can be considered ground breaking on both artistic and genre fronts. Joshua’s commitment to his faith pervaded all elements of his practice and his helpful nature made him an asset to the course. He is considerate, diligent, and generous with his time. Joshua is a talented artist, but it is his willingness to take risks with his creative work that is most inspiring to me.Siobhán Thomas

Rolando joined our University in 1983 and worked here until his retirement and return to Chile in June 2000. Rolando’s research interests related to theoretical approaches to human rights and the nature of good and evil.
