1.0 Introduction
This Landscape Report was prepared by OCULUS Landscape Architecture & Urban design. It sets forth the guiding principles for the landscape design of 195 Lennox Street development.
The landscape architectural design intent seeks to create a high end contemporary, functional and aesthetically pleasing landscape that seamlessly integrates with its landscape context and the proposed built form.
The following general principles form the landscape approach to the development:

1.01 Design Principles
Connections & Interfaces • Offer continuous pedestrian link through
site between Lennox st and Wustemenn Pl.
+ Provide for accessible and unobstructed well linked internal spaces
• Ensure legibility in indoor / outdoor connections
+ Maximise opportunities for social interaction through all abilities access, the arrangement of integrated seating and planting;
• Provide for viewing experience of the gardens from Lennox St and Internal areas by allowing for longer views framed by the landscape and building
+ Maintain external brick wall character with Ivy planting along northern edge
Materiality + Provide a material palette that is
sympathetic to the existing site and compliments the proposed architectural works.
+ Use of materials to prompt special moments throughout the landscape
• Simple green palette of planting as a material which compliments the hard finishes
Enable a Variety of Experiences
in Special Spaces Create an iconic and identifiable local space
The design of spaces that will encourage dwelling and occupation;
Use planting to create a unique series of diverse spaces with enclosure and openness, intimacy and exposure to cater for small groups as well as individuals
Foster places to relax and unwind
Shape sophisticated informal and formal meeting places
Encourage chance meeting places and socialism though integrated internal connections
A Green Focus
•
Building within a garden setting
•
Draw upon existing Lennox St planting into the site
•
Provide a ground plane which promotes human regeneration through intimate green and blue spaces
+ Extend planting up building facades as one continuous gesture to connect the ground floor to the building above
• Provide greening which can be appreciated on multiple scales from the Bridge Rd views to touching the nature within the site.

1.02 Overall Approach
Our overall approach is to provide a landscape which connects people back to nature, using biophilia as a key term in the way in which we form the spaces we create for people to inhabit. Using cues from the existing site landscape which promote health and wellbeing, whether its by viewing the green building from Bridge Rd and Lennox St or meandering through the lush gardens below.
Plants are our most primal and accessable connection back to nature. When we linger within the garden we exist in a moment as our mind and body begin to repair.
Biophilia
"the urge to affiliate with other forms of life"

1.03 Sustainable Design Philosophy
As part of our design philosophy we set out to achieve, we believe a holistic design approach should address areas of environmental, social and economic outcomes as well as the aesthetical nature of a design.
Vegetated Surfaces
Minimise + Urban heat island effect;
+ Gaseous pollutants;
Improve + Stormwater management
+ Thermal performance
• Creates / preserves habitat & ecological diversity
+ Aesthetics / experience
• Green open space opportunities
• Urban food production
Strategy + Incorporate green roofs, green walls or green façades into
design solutions
Integrated Water Management
Minimise + Negative impacts on ecological processes and systems
+ Negative impacts on natural hydrological processes
+ Demand on potable water supply systems
+ Pollution
+ Runoff and peak flows
+ Wastewater generation
Improve + Social and recreational values
• Integrates elements often regarded as separate aspects of urban water management
• Protection and enhancement of surface and ground water quality
• Quality of water discharge
Strategy • Incorporate water sensitive urban design (WSUD)
strategies
- Green infrastructure planning, and landscape management.
• Collection, treatment and re-use of stormwater runoff into design solutions
Urban Biodiversity
Minimise + Urban heat island effect
+ Negative impacts on ecological processes and systems
+ Negative impacts on natural hydrological processes
+ Demand on potable water supply systems
Improve + Space for flora and fauna to grow
+ Biodiversity in urban landscapes
+ Ecosystem health
+ Species richness
+ Habitat connectivity and patch size
+ Social and recreational values
Strategy • Increase multi-layered mid-storey habitat
• Evaluate existing habitat quality
• Identify opportunities for habitat enhancement
• Develop appropriate targets for enhancement
+ Add a diversity of resilient, low maintenance native shrubs
• Consider water availability and soil profile
