Knights of north Castle: Quest for the King’s Armor!4

Worship Guide Notes

We Hear You!Over time, the Cokesbury VBS Team has heard from multiple VBS leaders about their need for a worship service-style Closing Assembly. To meet that need, we have developed this free resource for churches to use at the end of their VBS sessions. We hope many churches will enjoy it and adapt it to develop the closing worship service format that best serves their individual groups and settings.

Feel free to adapt all material as best fits your group, space, and time allotment. We know that each church, program, team, and gift set is unique, so make each session your own—and have fun with it!

Knights with Special NeedsDon’t forget to include everyone in your VBS worship! Check out the FREE “VBS for Knights with Special Needs” resource at CokesburyVBS.com for tips on how to encourage all Knights to participate at their own levels of ability and comfort.

5Worship Guide

Elements of Worship

Order of WorshipThe order of worship for each session includes age-appropriate music, call to worship, prayer, and sharing times that all honor the Basic Pattern of Worship without sacrificing the VBS spirit and fun. As always, feel free to adapt elements as needed to meet the needs of your group!

Music Each Closing Worship Service includes suggested music from Knights of North Castle VBS, highlighted within the text using the symbol above. There is a gathering song for students to sing while entering, praise songs with accompanying praise-enhancing activities, a contemplative worship song, and a “sending forth” song to play or sing at dismissal.

Worship LeaderThese scripts include call-and-response readings. The Worship Leader may be your Assembly Leader, Music Leader, Children’s Minister, or whoever is the best fit to lead your group worship.

Bible Adventure VideosYour Closing Worship Service is a great opportunity to revisit each session’s Bible Adventure Video! Knights will love laughing at the storytelling again while key learnings from each story are reinforced. If you are not using the Bible Adventure Video DVD, simply skip this part.

Closing PrayerEach script includes a pre-written closing prayer time, however, feel free to invite volunteers to lead with their own original prayers! While prayer time is only written into each service once, we encourage you to incorporate it as often as best suits your group.

Additional OptionsWhile not included in these scripts, some other elements your group may find useful to include are Announcements, Offering, Communion, Mission Updates, and Prayer Requests or Prayer Wall.

Knights of north Castle: Quest for the King’s Armor!6

Closing Worship Service

Intro Song/Video “Knights of North Castle”

WelcomeWorship Leader: Welcome back, Knights! So happy to see you’ve returned safely from your quest! When we gather in our closing services, we will sing songs of praise and worship to God and share what we’ve learned on our quest. Let’s start by singing a song of praise together!

Praise Song “Hot Hot Burnin’ Up”

Option 1: Use the music video to teach the motions with this song. Say, “As we sing, our leaders will do motions with the words. See if you can follow along and do them, too!”

Option 2: Freestyle motions/dance!

Call to WorshipWL: It is so fun to sing praise songs together! Knights of North Castle, did you find the Belt of Truth today? (pause) Good! The Belt of Truth is so much more than an accessory to hold up pants! Paul used the metaphor of armor to help the Ephesians understand what they needed to be strong in the Lord. For our call to worship, I am going to speak, then pause and hold my hands out toward you. Each time I hold out my hands, you say, “God gives us strength to put on truth!” Let’s practice. (Hold out your hands, palms up, and say with Knights) God gives us strength to put on truth! Great job!

Here we go.

Just like when Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood firm and wouldn’t bow down to King Nebuchadnezzar’s statue… (Hold out hands.)

All: God gives us strength to put on truth!

WL: And just like when Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were threatened by the king to be thrown into the fiery furnace, but stood firm… (Hold out hands.)

All: God gives us strength to put on truth!

WL: And just as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego had the courage to speak up and tell King Nebuchadnezzar that they would serve their God no matter what… (Hold out hands.)

All: God gives us strength to put on truth!

WL: That’s right! God gives us strength so that we won’t be afraid to stand up for truth! Now let’s sing another song and worship our God who gives us strength!

Worship Song“Our God”If it helps your group focus, sing this song sitting.

Optional: Mission Moment/UpdatePause to share your VBS mission project updates and/or Mission Moment from the Mission Leader guide (available in the FREE Resources at CokesburyVBS.com).

Castle Callout ReviewWL: Okay, Knights! Let’s see what you’ve learned on today’s quest!

Question 1: In our Bible story, whose statue did Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refuse to bow down and worship? (King Nebuchadnezzar)

Question 2: What did the king see in the fire with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego? (a fourth person)

Question 3: Were Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego harmed in the fire? (No! God saved them, and they came out without a burn on them!)

WL: Great work, Knights! Now let’s say our Castle Callout together, along with the motions we learned earlier.

All (with ASL): Armor Up With Truth!

Banner Verse ReviewWL: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego found strength in God that gave them the courage to stand up for truth even when it was a scary thing to do. I believe our Banner Verse says something about strength. Let’s try saying it together!

All: Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Ephesians 6:10.

Sharing TimeWL: We’ve now come to our sharing time. This is a chance for you to share something you’ve learned along today’s quest. Who would like to share something that they’ve learned about truth today? (Allow 2-3 Knights to share. You may need to appoint the Knights who share prior to your closing worship service.) Great job, Knights! Thank you for having the courage to speak up about TRUTH tonight!

WL: Knights of North Castle, thank you for your help today on the quest to find the Belt of Truth! The truth is, we can’t stand up for what we believe in if we don’t have truth. In our Bible story, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego knew the truth about God and God’s power to save. That knowledge gave them the courage to stand up to the king. When you put on the Belt of Truth, you can have the same courage to stand up for what is true because you are strong in God’s power!

Bible Adventure Video

Optional: Prayer Time/WallIf desired, allow Knights to voice prayer requests via raised hands or a Prayer Wall (see sidebar).

Optional: Offering/CommunionIf desired, take up an offering and/or observe communion together as VBS music plays.

Closing PrayerWL: Let’s pray together. God, we know the truth that you are strong and always with us. Give us the courage to always stand up for what we know is right, even when it is scary. Amen.

Optional: AnnouncementsIf desired, take this time to present announcements and hand out Take-Home pages.

Knights of north Castle: Quest for the King’s Armor!8

Closing Worship Service

Intro Song/Video “Knights of North Castle”

WelcomeWorship Leader: Welcome back, Knights! I hope you had a successful quest today on your search for the Breastplate of Justice! Let’s get started by singing our praise song!

Praise Song “Giants in the Land”

Option 1: Use the music video to teach the motions with this song. Say, “As we sing, our leaders will do motions with the words. See if you can follow along and do them, too!”

Option 2: Create a “Praise Parade” by inviting Knights to march/walk around your Assembly area as they sing!

Call to WorshipWL: Great singing, Knights! Were you all successful in finding the Breastplate of Justice today? (pause) Awesome! Just like the Belt of Truth, the Breastplate of Justice is another part of the armor of God that Paul used to help us understand God’s power. The breastplate is the part of the armor that covered the most important parts of a soldier’s body, like the heart. Justice is when things are made right according to God’s love for us. And we get to join God in making things right! Once we know the truth, we also can know about justice. Now, for our call to worship, just like before, I will speak, then pause and hold my hands out towards you. Each time I hold my hands out, you say, “God gives us strength to put on justice!” Let’s practice. (Hold out hands, palms up, and say with Knights) God gives us strength to put on justice! Good job!

Here we go.

Just like when David had the courage to stand up to Goliath because of his faith in God… (Hold out hands.)

All: God gives us strength to put on justice!

WL: And just like when David knew that his God was big enough to take down a giant with the smallest of stones… (Hold out hands.)

All: God gives us strength to put on justice!

WL: And just like when David was confident that God would save Israel from the Philistines… (Hold out hands.)

All: God gives us strength to put on justice!

WL: That’s right. We can be sure that God will bring justice and will give us the strength to trust God! Let’s sing about our strong and just God!

Worship Song“Our God”If it helps your group focus, sing this song sitting.

Castle Callout ReviewWL: Okay, let’s see what you Knights have learned!

Question 1: In our Bible story, who were the Israelites in battle with? (The Philistines)

Question 2: Why were all the Israelites afraid to fight Goliath? (He was a very tall and powerful warrior.)

Question 3: Why wasn’t David afraid to fight Goliath? (He knew God was with him and that the battle was God’s!)

WL: Well done! Now, let’s say our Castle Callout together with the motions we learned earlier!

All (with ASL): Armor Up with Justice!

Banner Verse ReviewWL: David knew that the battle was in God’s hand and that God would bring justice for the Israelites. He knew that his God had the power to defeat any giant he faced! Our Banner Verse talks about God’s power! Let’s practice saying it together!

All: Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Ephesians 6:10.

Sharing TimeWL: Now, we’ve come to our sharing time. This is your chance to share something you’ve learned on your quest today. Who would like to share something you’ve learned about justice? (Allow 2-3 Knights to share. You may need to appoint the Knights who share prior to your closing worship service.) Good job, Knights! Thank you for sharing about JUSTICE!

WL: Knights of North Castle, you all did such a great job on your quest to find the Breastplate of Justice today! We know that we can put our trust in God because we know that God is with us. This gives us the courage, like it gave David, to stand up for what is just and to know that God will bring perfect justice like God did for the Israelites!

Knights of north Castle: Quest for the King’s Armor!10

Closing Worship Service

Intro Song/Video “Knights of North Castle”

WelcomeWorship Leader: Welcome back, Knights! So glad to see you’ve returned back safely from your quest! Let’s get this service started by singing a song of praise together!

Praise Song“Emmanuel, God is With Us”

Option 1: Use the music video to teach the motions with this song. Say, “As we sing, our leaders will do motions with the words. See if you can follow along and do them, too!”

Option 2: Provide flowy scarves, flags, and/or fabric scraps; invite Knights to wave them as they sing!

Call to WorshipWL: Great singing, Knights! Were you all successful in your quest to find the Shoes of Peace today? (pause) Great work! Without shoes, it would be hard to get anywhere. The Shoes of Peace are what we need to be ready to go out and live like Jesus. Jesus showed us how to live a life of love and peace. The One who saves us all came to us as a tiny baby sleeping peacefully in a manger. Now, do you all remember how we do our call to worship? I’ll speak, then pause and hold my hands out toward you. When I hold out my hands, you all say, “God gives us strength to put on peace!” Let’s practice! (Hold out hands, palms up, and say with Knights) God gives us strength to put on peace! Great!

Here we go.

Just as Jesus came to Earth as a baby

born in a stable… (Hold out hands.)

All: God gives us strength to put on peace!

WL: And just like Jesus teaches us to love instead of fight… (Hold out hands.)

All: God gives us strength to put on peace!

WL: And just like Jesus showed everyone how to love God and love each other… (Hold out hands.)

All: God gives us strength to put on peace!

WL: That’s right! With God’s strength, we can live in peace with God and one another! Let’s sing a worship song to our God who shows us how to love!

Castle Callout ReviewWL: Alright, Knights! Let’s see what you’ve learned on your quest today!

Question 1: How did Mary get the message that she was going to have a baby? (An angel told her.)

Question 2: Why did Mary and Joseph have their baby in a stable? (There were no other rooms available in Bethlehem.)

Question 3: What did the angels tell the shepherds in a field nearby on the night Jesus was born? (They should go see the baby born in a manger because he was the Savior of the world.) Great job!

WL: Now let’s say our Castle Callout together! Don’t forget the motions!

All (with ASL): Armor Up with Peace!

Banner Verse ReviewWL: Even though Jesus is the Son of God and the Savior of the world, he didn’t enter the world in a way that showed power. Who would’ve known this little baby would have the power to save the world? That reminds me! I think our Banner Verse says something about God’s power! Let’s say it together!

All: Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Ephesians 6:10.

Sharing TimeWL: Now we’ve come to one of my favorite parts of our service: Sharing time! This is a time where you all can share something you’ve learned during today’s quest! Who would like to share something they’ve learned about peace? (Allow 2-3 Knights to share. You may need to appoint the Knights who share prior to your closing worship service.) Awesome job, Knights! Thank you for sharing about the power of PEACE!

WL: Knights of North Castle, thank you for your help today on the quest to find the Shoes of Peace! When we put on peace, we are choosing to live a life like Jesus. Jesus teaches us how to love each other. He showed us how to treat others with kindness and respect. We can be like Jesus when we choose to live at peace with everyone. Putting on the Shoes of Peace will help us get along better with our friends and families—even when it is difficult! God gives us strength to live in peace!

Closing Worship Service

Intro Song/Video “Knights of North Castle”

WelcomeWorship Leader: Welcome back, Knights! I hope you had a great time on your quest today to find the Shield of Faith! Let’s get started and sing our praise song!

Praise Song “Jesus You Remain”

Option 1: Use the music video to teach the motions with this song. Say, “As we sing, our leaders will do motions with the words. See if you can follow along and do them, too!”

Option 2: Invite Knights to pass inflatable beach balls to each other (gently!) as they sing!

Call to WorshipWL: Good singing, everyone! Was your quest to find the Shield of Faith successful? (pause) Great! The shield is an important part of a soldier’s armor because it is so good at protecting them! The Shield of Faith is important for us because it can protect us from unhelpful beliefs and thoughts that might come and try to hurt us. When we have faith in God, we trust the things we read in the Bible. We believe that God sent Jesus to love us and take care of us. Who remembers how we do our call to worship? I will speak, then pause and hold my hands out towards you. When I hold out my hands, you’ll say “God gives us strength to put on faith!” Let’s practice that. (Hold out hands, palms up, and say with Knights) God gives us strength to put on faith! Good.

Here we go!

Just like when Peter stepped out of the boat to walk toward Jesus… (Hold out hands.)

All: God gives us strength to put on faith!

WL: And just like when the disciples proclaimed that Jesus really was the Son of God… (Hold out hands.)

All: God gives us strength to put on faith!

WL: And any time we feel afraid or wonder whether we can count on Jesus to always be with us… (Hold out hands.)

All: God gives us strength to put on faith!

WL: Right! God gives us strength to put on faith and know that we can be strong in God! Now, let’s sing a song of worship to our mighty God!

Castle Callout ReviewWL: Now, let’s see what you Knights have learned!

Question 1: In our Bible story, why were the disciples afraid when they saw Jesus walking toward them on the water? (They thought he was a ghost.)

Question 2: Who wanted to step out and walk on the water to Jesus? (Peter)

Question 3: What happened when Peter became afraid and took his eyes off of Jesus? (He began to sink.) Great job, Knights!

WL: I think Peter may have needed to hear today’s Castle Callout! Let’s say it together with our motions!

All (with ASL): Armor Up with Faith!

Banner Verse ReviewWL: Our God is strong enough to walk on water and calm our fears and doubts! I think I know a verse about God’s strength. Do you? Yes! Our Banner Verse talks about God’s strength! Let’s say it together.

All: Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Ephesians 6:10.

Sharing TimeWL: It’s time for you all to share about the things you’ve learned on your quest today. Who would like to share something they learned about faith? (Allow 2-3 Knights to share. You may need to appoint the Knights who share prior to your closing worship service.) Good job, Knights! Thanks so much for sharing about FAITH!

WL: Knights of North Castle, thank you for your help today in finding the Shield of Faith! We know that we can put our faith in God, who promises to be with us and God always keeps promises!

Knights of north Castle: Quest for the King’s Armor!14

Closing Worship Service

Intro Song/Video “Knights of North Castle”

WelcomeWorship Leader: Welcome back, Knights! I hope your final quest was the best yet! Let’s get our final service started with a song of praise!

Praise Song “Earthquake”

Option 1: Use the music video to teach the motions with this song. Say, “As we sing, our leaders will do motions with the words. See if you can follow along and do them, too!”

Option 2: Invite Knights to choose an “air instrument” (air guitar, air drums, air keys, etc.) to play along as they sing!

Call to WorshipWL: Super singing, Knights! This week, you have embarked on quests to find pieces of armor with some help from the King’s Book. Were you all successful in finding our last piece of armor, the Helmet of Salvation? (pause) Great! The word salvation simply means “to save.” The Bible tells us that Jesus came to save us and teach us how to follow God. When we put on the Helmet of Salvation, we remind ourselves that God loves us so much and we should live into the salvation God has given us. Let’s do our final call to worship together! I hope you remember how it’s done. I’ll speak, then hold my hands out to you. Whenever my hands are held out, you say, “God gives us strength to put on salvation!” Let’s practice! (Hold out hand, palms up, and say with Knights) God gives us strength to put on salvation! Good job!

Let’s get started!

Just like when Paul and Silas sang songs of praise to God, even when they were in jail… (Hold out hands.)

All: God gives us strength to put on salvation!

WL: And just like the jailer knew that he wanted to follow God after he saw God’s power… (Hold out hands.)

All: God gives us strength to put on salvation!

WL: And when we follow Jesus as our Savior… (Hold out hands.)

All: God gives us strength to put on salvation!

WL: That’s right! Just like Paul, Silas, and the jailer, we can choose a life of following God and live with salvation! Let’s sing a song of worship to the God who has saved us!

Worship Song“Our God”If it helps your group focus, sing this song sitting.

Castle Callout ReviewWL: Okay, let’s see what you have learned on your final quest!

Question 1: Instead of being sad, what did Paul and Silas do to pass the time while they were chained in prison? (prayed and sang hymns to God)

Question 2: What happened while Paul and Silas were praising God? (An earthquake came and made the prison doors fly open and all the prisoners’ chains fall off.)

Question 3: What did Paul and Silas tell the jailer he needed to do to be saved? (believe in Jesus)

WL: Well done! Now, let’s say our Castle Callout together with the motions we learned earlier!

All (with ASL): Armor Up with Salvation!

Banner Verse ReviewWL: Paul and Silas praised God, even while they were in prison. They knew that God was more powerful than any hard time they would face and that they could trust God to be with them in those hard times! I think now would be a good time to say our Banner Verse together! Let’s do it!

All: Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Ephesians 6:10.

Sharing TimeWL: Now, we’ve come to our sharing time! Remember, this is a chance for you to share something you’ve learned on your quest. Who would like to share something you’ve learned about salvation? (Allow 2-3 Knights to share. You may need to appoint the Knights who share prior to your closing worship service.) Great job, Knights! Thank you for sharing about SALVATION!

WL: Knights of North Castle, you have done an amazing job finding all the pieces of the Great Armor! It’s a good thing we’ve had the King’s Book to help us on our quests. Did you know that the King’s Book is also called the Bible and can be read by anyone? And, also, did you know that you can always put on the Great Armor and be strong in the Lord and in the strength of God’s power, just like our Banner Verse says? When we armor up with truth, justice, peace, faith, and salvation, we are putting our trust in God to show us how to live.

So now, Knights, take all you’ve learned with you as you go out from North Castle and be strong in the Lord and in the strength of God’s power!
