This casual accessory harbors two secrets! Increases and decreases turn the tubular peyote rope into a two-sided necklace. Meanwhile, round seed beads played against cylinders result in multi-color waves that stand out from solid-color stripes.

To make this reversible necklace, select two colors (A and B) of 110 cylinder beads; the As will create the solid-color stripes on one side of the necklace, and the Bs will create the solid-color stripes

on the other side. Then select 110 seed beads in six accent colors for each side; these will create the multi-color waves that swell out from the solid-color stripes. Colors C–H should coordinate

with the B cylinders, and colors I–N should coordinate with the A cylinders.

You will be working the necklace in tubular peyote stitch (Basics), but the opening of your beadwork will have the shape of a flattened oval with a diagonal edge. This is caused by increases between the As and Bs on one side of the tube and decreases between the As and Bs on the other side of the tube. The increases and decreases form gentle “spines” that separate the two colorways of your necklace.

stepbystepCenter cabochon[1] Using E6000 adhesive, glue a 10 mm cabochon to the center of a 2 x 2-in. (5 x 5 cm) square of Ultra-suede. Allow the glue to dry completely.[2] Tie an overhand knot (Basics) at the end of 2 ft. (61 cm) of thread, and sew through the Ultrasuede from back to front, exiting next to the cabochon.[3] Work in beaded backstitch (Basics and photo a) around the cabochon using 150 seed beads. Sew through all the beads added in this round, sew down through the Ultrasuede from front to back, and then sew up from back to front, exiting along the outer edge of this round.[4] Work as in step 3 to add a second round of beaded backstitch using color A 110 cylinder beads, and then work a third round using color C 90 three-cut beads. Sew through all the beads in the last round, and end the thread by tying a knot on the back of the Ultrasuede.[5] Trim the Ultrasuede close to the beadwork, making sure you don’t cut any of the threads. [6] Place the cabochon in the center of a small piece of cardboard, and trace around it. Cut out the shape, and trim it

2 mm smaller than the cabochon. Using white tacky glue, glue the cardboard shape to the back of the Ultrasuede, and press the cabochon and beadwork firmly onto the cardboard. This helps the beads to lie flat. Set the cabochon aside.

Filigree base[1] Place a 47 mm round filigree on a 4 x 4-in. (10 x 10 cm) square of Ultrasuede, making sure there is enough room to add the 16 mm charm to the same piece of Ultrasuede at the bottom of the filigree.[2] Tie an overhand knot at the end of 2 ft. (61 cm) of thread, and sew through the Ultrasuede from back to front, exiting near the tip of a petal in the center flower of the filigree (photo b). Tack the filigree to the Ultrasuede at each petal of the flower. Continue to tack the filigree to the Ultrasuede in places where your thread will be hidden, working your way out to the outside edge of the filigree. Be sure to tack down every V in the outer ring of the filigree. End the thread as before.[3] Tie an overhand knot at the end of a comfortable length of thread, and sew through the Ultrasuede from back to front, exiting along the outside edge of the filigree.

La PeregrinastepbystepSkirted rivoli linksBezel[1] On 2 yd. (1.8 m) of thread, pick up 28 110 cylinder beads, and tie them into a ring with a square knot (Basics), leaving a 12-in. (30 cm) tail. Sew through the first cylinder again.[2] Working in tubular peyote stitch (Basics), pick up a cylinder, skip the next cylinder in the ring, and sew through the following cylinder. Repeat this stitch to complete the round, and step up through the first cylinder added in this round.[3] Work two rounds of tubular peyote using 150 seed beads, and step up after each round. Use a firm tension, and snug up the beads to form a cup. Sew through the beadwork to exit an up-bead from step 1. The original La Peregrina necklace was designed by Cartier and incorporates a large natural pearl drop, diamonds, rubies, and cultured pearls. This stunning interpretation uses beads that are slightly more attainable and combines peyote stitch, herringbone, netting, and brick stitch.

DESIGN NOTE:La Peregrina means “the pilgrim” and actually refers to the pear-shaped pearl drop, which originally weighed 55.95 carats or 11.2 grams. Consider attaching a larger pearl than the one shown in this necklace to be true to the original.
