INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, due to sustained investment, especially in waste management and renewable energies, Ireland has become a key location for sourcing environmental products and services. In tackling the legislative pressures of waste management and the reduction in CO2, Irish companies are now developing novel technologies to improve recovery and recycling rates, reduce landfill, increase air and water quality, and to reduce atmospheric CO2 & global warming.
Only 10 years ago Ireland was utterly reliant on landfill. In a relatively short period, however, Ireland has transformed itself into a society focused on reusing & recycling, reducing carbon emissions, reducing waste and increasing energy efficiency through successfully transforming public attitudes. Ireland is now leading the way in the implementation of new schemes such as the Plastic Bag Tax levy and the WEEE Directive.
Global annual sales of Irish environmental products and services are presently valued at over €680m with predicted growth of 15 – 20% in the next 3 – 4 years. Three decades of continuous investment have helped make Ireland one of the worlds leading locations and sources for environmental products and services. This in turn has stimulated the emergence of indigenous clusters of innovative companies that are now taking leading positions in international markets.

Enterprise Ireland’s mission is to help Irish companies to grow and to expand into overseas markets. Working in partnership with Irish companies to help them to compete in the global marketplace, Enterprise Ireland’s strategic priorities are :-
Applied Research & Development; and International Business Development and Marketing.
New business challenges and competition in the environmental marketplace have heightened the need for innovation to provide unique, value-added products and services. To encourage innovation, Enterprise Ireland provides a range of supports to Irish companies aimed at increased R & D spend, improving productivity and on training & knowledge-building. Companies are provided with a package of incentives to collaborate with the Irish research community on the development of new technologies.
ENTERpRIsE IRElaND’s NETwORk Of OvERsEas OffICEs
Enterprise Ireland (www.enterprise-ireland.com) is the gateway to Irish suppliers of world-class environmental services and products and can save key decision makers valuable time and resources by meeting with them directly to discuss their business needs, acting on behalf of these Irish companies to enhance their businesses, provide new solutions and present alternative suppliers.
Through its overseas office network, Enterprise Ireland works strategically with 54 indigenous exporters of environmental products and services. These companies are arranged into capability clusters and regularly profiled. Key target markets for each cluster are selected and supports aimed at establishing, or building on an existing, market presence are provided.

Trade-shows, networking & partnering events & localised marketing collateral as well as building relationships with key buyer/purchasing groups/organisations serves to boost the international profile of Ireland’s capability clusters and to win export business.
Irish environmental products and services can be divided into 4 key groups - waste management and recycling (including waste collection, segregation, treatment & disposal); water and waste-water treatment; international services and sustainable energy (including technologies to improve energy-efficiency, waste-to-energy and renewable energy). In seeking to attract the interest of international buyers and purchasing groups, Enterprise Ireland aims to win over key decision makers by providing up-to-date, consistent marketing information on relevant Irish suppliers and by bringing overseas buyers and influencers into contact with Irish suppliers of services and products. Enterprise Ireland’s overseas Market Advisors liaise directly with overseas buyers to identify new products/solutions and present alternative suppliers.
Enterprise Ireland, through www.envirocentre.ie, is also a source of specialist environmental supports both to Irish business and to overseas companies located in Ireland. Enterprise Ireland promotes the sustainable development of Ireland’s industrial sector by providing supports and advice to companies to assist them in improving their environmental performance (i.e. in developing environmentally processes and products) and in meeting their environmental obligations.
Enterprise Ireland provides companies with information, technical assistance, networking opportunities and targeted assistance, some supported by financial incentives. These services are offered through the dedicated web-site www.envirocentre.ie, which contains all relevant information including legislation, best-practice guides, recycling and consultant databases, and the latest news in the environmental sector.

Bedminster’s bio-energy technology converts biodegradable waste into biofuel and/or compost. With 12 processing plants located in North America, Australia and Japan, Bedminster offers a long-term sustainable waste-management solution, whilst providing significant renewable energy benefits. Bedminster’s bio-energy technology is a mechanical biological treatment (MBT) system, which employs a large rotating steel drum to convert the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW) in less than 3 days into bio-fuel or raw compost. Bedminster’s technology offers landfill optimization, along with associated cost savings and the ability to conform to US and EU waste initiatives. With no need for shredding of waste, coupled with the biological processing technique, the bio-fuel end products are considerably cleaner than mechanically produced refuse derived fuels (RDF). The Technology can be custom designed to suit waste disposal requirements and can be used to both reduce and reclaim landfill airspace.

lIbERaTOR.aERO
Liberator.aero provides web-based systems and services to airlines that reduce costs. Liberator.aero’s flagship product is the LFI System, an operations monitoring tool for reducing fuel burn. It does this by enabling airlines to optimise the weight and balance of the aircraft on the ground and in the air. An aircraft burns less fuel when loaded rearwards to give an aft balance. This causes the aircraft to fly with its nose slightly upwards and results in reduced drag and less fuel burnt. By eliminating excess weight the aicraft burns less fuel. Airlines, by using the LFI System, will optimise their operations across all routes and will benefit signifiicantly from reduced fuel cost penalties. C02 emissions are reduced by 3 or more kilos for each kilo of unused fuel.
