These award banquets are a nice evening out with a great meal, but also a time to celebrate the

competition and recognize those who have excelled. We have a lot of fun getting those points but also

appreciate those who have made the effort. I am looking forward to a competitive 2018. But mostly, I

look forward to seeing you all at these various activities!

Governor’s desk…

The calendar says April and the season should be spring, but I think we are into

about the 15th start of winter around here. It’s been a hard spring to follow

with 50’s and 60’s one day and snow the next but without a doubt, at some

point spring will be here and we are ready to go with numerous events.

We are just a month out from Don Angeroth’s driving school which promises to

be a fun time and a chance for new and old racers alike to get their feet wet for

the first time this year. Don’t forget we will also have training for corner

workers and tech inspection so please come out and support the club on the 12th of May at the Mall of

the Bluffs.

Looks as though we may end up with some extra sanctions this year so we are in the early planning

stages of getting some more sanctioned car shows on the calendar and still working to get up to the new

drag strip in Onawa for some record drags one weekend this summer.

For those of you that don’t race, again please come out and support the club if you can and don’t forget

all the great social events lined up for the summer. We have theatre, dinners, meet and greets and

tours for everyone on the calendar.

I will once again be representing the club at the National Governor’s meeting on 4-5 May, so if you have

anything you would like me to bring up at a national level, please let me know at the general meeting on

the 19th.

Look forward to a fun summer of events, if you have ideas for events, please let me or the social director

know and we’ll see what we can do to add them. Get those cars ready, we all know it will suddenly be

summer around here and the fun with something for everyone will have begun.

Hi Everyone, It is an honor to have been chosen by the CCC membership to be one of the Members at Large representatives for 2018. We have such a great club and we want to keep it that way. My part in this is being your sounding board for any complaints, suggestions or comments concerning the Club that you may have. General Meeting Minutes Cornhusker Corvette Club

Bel Air Banquet Hall

Kevin Reit, as President, presided over the meeting.

The meeting began with the Club reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Kevin thanked Jerry Koraleski, Gene Gau, Bill Anderson, Ray Kennedy, Craig Pandil and Pete Fagan

who worked at the Swap Meet held in Lincoln sponsored by the Old Car Council.

Kevin announced National and Regional officers from our Club:

3. Ron Bockerman, West Region Treasurer

Kevin reminded us that Kathy and Jerry Koraleski are still collecting non-perishable food for the

Stephens Center. Kathy Brisbois is collecting toiletries for a homeless shelter.

Jayne Reit read the names of Members who have birthdays during the month of March.

Carolyn Horst, Secretary, asked for a motion to accept the minutes from the February 2018 meeting.

Jane Reit made a motion to approve the minutes and Sandy Swift seconded the motion.

Pete Fagan, Summer Festival Director, informed us Summer Festival will be held 31 Aug – 3 Sep.

Following are daily events:

1. Friday, 31 Aug, pot luck dinner at Lucky Duck garage (Gene and Kathy Gau’s home), valve cover

racing and the racers may have their cars teched that night.

2. Saturday, 1 Sep, 7 low speed races at RPM followed by a car show and dinner at Quaker Steak and

Lube.

3. Sunday, 2 Sep, seven high speed races or golf tournament.

4. Monday, 3 Sep, Rallye and Funkhana.

He is looking for someone to run the Funkhana and help out wherever needed.

Pete Fagan, Newsletter Editor, welcomes articles from members for the Newsletter.

Kevin reminded us we have two Members at Large, Sharon Renshaw and Ron Hernandez, who we should

contact with any issues with the Club.

Chris Tooker, Membership Director, was absent. Kevin introduced new

members Bill and Margie Bolte.

Ray Zimmerman, Public Relations, asked that everyone wear their name

badge and told us we have five contributors who have chosen to donate gift

cards to their business. Ray drew Bob Redmond’s name for a free dinner at

next month’s meeting under the Wear Your Name Badge to the Meeting

program.

Ray Kennedy, Vice President, informed us that the proposed changes to our Operating Rules will be

posted in this coming month’s Newsletter. We will vote on these changes next month. Jim Walton is

working on getting free tickets for the I-80 Speedway Dirt Track on May 18th for our Club. He reminded

us workers are needed for our display at the World of Wheels on March 16th to 18th. He told everyone it

is being considered that our Club move the Awards Banquet from January to either March or April. The

Club will vote on this next month. If we move to March or April, our regular meeting for that month will

be held along with the Awards Banquet. We will not be giving calendars with awards earned.

Awards were handed out to those who were not able to attend the Awards Banquet in January as follows:

1. Jody DePetro earned 16th place in the Social Activities with 390 points.

2. Carolyn and Bob Edmundson tied for 13th place with 400 points in Social Activities.

3. Sam DePetro earned 12th place in Social Activities with 405 points.

4. Carolyn Horst earned 3rd place in Social Activities with 520 points.

5. Bill Cashell earned 2nd place in Social Activities with 545 points.

6. Kathy Cashell earned 1st place in Social Activities with 555 points.

7. George Horst earned 19th place in Competition points.

8. Kathy Cashell and Bob Edmundson were given Recognition Awards after retiring from the Board.

9. Vic and Ruth Larson received a 10 Year Award for belonging to our Club.

10. Members of the Patriot Racing Team were recognized. These members are racers and Veterans.

Anyone who is a racer and a Veteran is welcome to join the team.

11. Don Angeroth was the first recipient of a plaque awarded to a racer in our Club for on-going

commitment to our Corvette racing community. This award will be presented each year at the Awards

Banquet.

12. Bill and Kathy Cashell were awarded the traveling trophy for the person/persons who has meant the

most to our Club this past year.

Tom Horeis, Treasurer, went over the budget figures for February by line item.

Jon Brown, Governor, told us the NCCC Scholarship application form is now on the Web Site.

Deadline for applying is July 1st. He told us we will be receiving new NCCC membership cards in the

mail since having members print their own cards was a failure. He explained we will have to sign a

waiver form for every Club event where all Club members are invited. The reason for this is to be able to

utilize the liability coverage under the NCCC insurance policy. It is the Club member’s responsibility to

find and sign the waiver. It is not the responsibility of the person hosting the event to find you to sign the

waiver. If you do not sign the waiver form, you will not receive points for the event you attended. You

cannot sign for someone else. The 2019 NCCC National Convention will be in Denver, Colorado and the

National convention this year (2018) is in New Orleans.

Don Angeroth, Competition Director, reminded us of the upcoming racing events:

1. May 12th, free driving school in Council Bluffs

2. May 19th and 20th, auto cross racing at Southeast Community College in Lincoln

3. May 26th, 27th and 28th, racing at Newton, Iowa

4. June 9th and 10th, racing in Kansas City

5. June 23rd and 24th, racing at Sheraton, Iowa

Bob Redmond, Social Director, discussed upcoming social events:

1. Speedway Motors Museum in Lincoln on March 31st, with lunch to follow at Parker’s Smoke House in

Ashland.

2. Lofte Barn Theater in Manly. Nebraska on April 7th, meeting at Cilantros before we caravan to the

theater.

3. Road Trip to Kansas City on April 27th, 28th and 29th – Theater/dinner house, World War I Museum

and Kansas City Auto Museum.

4. Possible trip to Ash Hollow on May1st

5. Rallye on June 6th

6. Roads Less Traveled in Colorado in August which is combined with Vettes on the Rockies in

Steamboat Springs. Bob Edmundson gave a recap of this trip. There are 20 cars going and they would

like another 4 cars. Deadline for signing up for this trip is Wednesday, March 21st.

7. Eureka Springs, Arkansas on October 4th through 7th. Bob has 18 rooms set aside for our Club.

J. B. Benedict, Points Chairman, informed us there are no NCCC points posted on the Web Site yet.

CCC points are posted on the back table of the Banquet Hall. He thanked those who brought newspapers

for Hearts United for Animals.

Old Business – Kevin handed out awards from the West Region Banquet to those who were not able to

attend as follows:

1. John Salmons received a 200 shirt

2. Marilyn Angeroth received a trophy for 6th place in the women’s division

3. Don Angeroth received a trophy for 2nd place in the men’s division.

4. Barbara Redmond received a plaque for Ladies Rallye Champ

5. Bob Redmond received a plaque for Mens Rallye Champ

New Business – Feel free to contact one of the Members at Large regarding comments about changing

the date of the Awards Banquet.

Kevin thanked Shelly, Holly and Candace for the great food and hospitality.

The Birthday winner for March was Joann Leners.

John Salmans awarded a $50 gift card from Bucky’s to LaLani Hernandez from

Service One.

The 50/50 winner was Nancy Bronner in the amount of $110.00.

Member News

SrA Michael Siggers, USAF, nephew to the Gau’s and son to CCC members Anna and Tristan graduated from

Airmen Leadership School (ALS) during the month of March at F.E. Warren AFB, WY. ALS teaches basic

leadership skills and is the first step in an Airmen’s career before pinning on the rank of Staff Sergeant and

becoming a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO). Congratulations Mike! Mike is hoping to be able to race with us

this summer.

Is Your Coolant Really “Cool”?

Like most of us, we don’t get our Corvettes out much during the winter. When spring comes, it is time

to change the oil, air up the tires and check all of the fluids. When is the right time to change your

engine coolant? For some vehicles, you're advised to change the coolant every 30,000 miles. For

others, changing it isn't even on the maintenance schedule. What about when you don’t drive it that

many miles? Should you trust your coolant to still be good?

For example, Hyundai says the

coolant in the engine (what many

refer to as "antifreeze") in most of its

models should be replaced after the

first 60,000 miles, then every 30,000

miles after that. The interval is every

30,000 miles on some Mercedes-

Benz models with some engines, but

on others it's 120,000 miles or 12

years. On still other Mercedes, it's

150,000 miles or 15 years.

Some manufacturers recommend

you drain and flush the engine's

cooling system and change the coolant more often on vehicles subjected to "severe service," such as

frequent towing, which can generate more heat. The schedule for many Chevrolets, though, is a change

at 150,000 miles regardless of how the vehicle is driven.

Many service shops, though — including some at dealerships that sell cars with "lifetime" coolant — say

you should do a coolant change more often than the maintenance schedule recommends, such as every

30,000 or 50,000 miles.

Here's why: Most vehicles use long-life engine coolant (usually a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water)

in the radiator that for several years will provide protection against boiling in hot weather and freezing

in cold temperatures, with little or no maintenance. Modern vehicles also have longer intervals

between fluid changes of all types partly because environmental regulators have pressured automakers

to reduce the amount of old coolant, as well as other waste fluids, that must be disposed of or recycled.

Coolant can deteriorate over time and should be tested to see if it's still good, as it can be hard to tell

just by appearances. Even if the coolant reservoir shows sufficient coolant level and testing shows the

cooling and antifreeze protection are still adequate, a coolant drain and antifreeze flush may be needed.

However, (you knew there was more coming, didn’t you?) is there another reason to check your

coolant? That would be a big YES! The coolant can become more acidic over time and lose its rust-

inhibiting properties, causing corrosion. Corrosion can damage the radiator, water pump, thermostat,

radiator cap, hoses and other parts of the cooling system, as well as to the vehicle heater system. And

that can cause a car engine to overheat.

Changing a water pump on most Corvettes is as much fun as playing tag with King Kong. But, there is

something worse. Have you ever had the pleasure of changing a Corvette heater core? Oh, yeah! That

makes Chinese Water Torture seem like a party game for date night.

According to my owner's manual you should do it at 5 years or 150,000 miles

whichever comes first. I think that is a stretch. If the coolant in any vehicle is

3 years old, it should be tested periodically. That's to look for signs of rust,

leaks and to make sure it has sufficient cooling and overheating protection,

even if the cooling system seems to be working properly and the reservoir is

full. The cooling system can be checked with test strips that measure acidity,

and with a hydrometer that measures freezing and boiling protection.

If the antifreeze coolant needs to be changed, the cooling system might also

need flushing to remove contaminants no matter what the maintenance

schedule calls for or how many miles are on the odometer.

Are you looking for some additional insurance? I know that the acid levels

will rise long before the coolant actually breaks down, causing rust, corrosion

and premature water pump damage. Every year I add a bottle of rust

inhibitor and water pump lube to each of my cars. (Ok, I don’t add it to my air

cooled Volkswagen). The kind I use is Bar’s Leak. There are many available,

but I have had good luck with their cooling system products over the years.

Years ago, there was a TV commercial for oil filters. It said, “An oil filter costs about $4 and an engine

rebuild costs about $3,000. You can pay me now or pay me later”. That is still good advice.

Shut Up and Drive!

The dangers of distracted driving have been widely reported in the news. On Thursday, April 12th, KFAB

radio host Gary Sadelmyer interviewed Fred Zwonechek, administrator of the Nebraska Office of

Highway Safety (NOHC) and longtime Corvette enthusiast. Fred confirmed the recent increase in traffic

accidents due to distracted driving in Nebraska.

One of the common distractions is talking on a cell phone while driving. Over 60% of drivers surveyed

admit to talking on their cell phones, even though they are aware of the risks. Some people argue that

talking on a "hands-free" cell phone while driving is OK, but Fred said that studies have consistently

shown that phone conversation generates images in the mind of the driver that interfere with his/her

view of the road.

Texting while driving is even more dangerous. Fred noted that a vehicle moving at 55 mph travels more

than the length of a football field while a texting driver takes his/her eyes off the road for 5 seconds!

Conversation between a driver and a passenger can also be a dangerous distraction. Statistics show that

teenagers in particular have significantly more accidents when there are passengers in their cars than

when they are alone.

I have a bad habit of chatting with Palmer when she is driving. She becomes distracted when I call her

attention to a Tesla Model 3, a new construction project, or a llama standing in a nearby feedlot. Over

the years my thoughtless behavior has resulted in numerous missed traffic signs and a couple close

encounters of the worst kind.

Listening to the radio while driving is a gray area. It can be distracting, but one-way communication is

much less compelling than personal conversation. Fred admits that he drives with his radio turned on.

Obviously it is not realistic to ban all conversation in a moving vehicle. However, there are things you

can do to reduce the risk of accidents. As a passenger, you can help the driver watch for signs, signals,

and obstacles. You can handle phone calls, temperature settings, and radio controls. You can chat with

the driver of course, but avoid topics that may be upsetting, and stop talking whenever you are in heavy

traffic.

But the main responsibility lies with you when you are the driver. Stay alert. Practice visual scanning

you learned in racing school. Don't fiddle with the secondary controls unless absolutely necessary. And

when things really get hairy ... JUST SHUT UP AND DRIVE!

2018 Operating Rules

The following are proposed changes to the 2018 Operating rules and Job descriptions

Please take a few minutes and review the proposed changes to the Operating Rules of Procedures and the Job

Descriptions for our club. The proposed changes are in red. These will be voted on at the April meeting.

ARTICLE IV – CCC ACTIVITY POINTS SYSTEM

SECTION 1 – GENERAL

I. Specific Exceptions:

1. Annual (or periodic), major, multiple day events, that are advertised as Corvette events, are hosted by other

clubs or organizations, include a registration L. Annual, major events, advertised as Corvette events and hosted by other clubs or organizations

• NCCC Convention 50 points total

• West Region Banquet 25 points total

• Activity Events within a 100mile radius from Omaha 10 points total

• Activity Events within 101-200 mile radius from Omaha 25 points total

• Activity Events greater than 200 miles radius from Omaha 35 points total

K. Bright Idea Award for the Best Damn Idea this year:

Bright Idea Award presented to a CCC member who came up with the “Best Damn Idea” for the club during the

past year which may not have otherwise existed. Winner to be selected by the previous year’s recipient.

ARTICLE VIII - GUIDELINES FOR CCC INTERNET E-MAIL MESSAGE DISTRIBUTION

SECTION 5 – SOCIAL MEDIA

ie. Face book – Twitter – Instagram Etc.

Messages may contain information that is relevant to, and in the best interests of, CCC and its Members; for

example:

• Event schedule changes, corrections, or cancellations

• Deadline reminders for CCC or NCCC activities

• Calls for volunteers for CCC activities

• Notices to all Members pertaining to individual Members or their immediate families:

Special achievements, retirement celebrations, births, illnesses, deaths unless authorized by the BOD, the

following types of messages WILL NOT be distributed via CCC social media.

• Jokes, cartoons, political commentary, discriminatory statements, religious or inspirational messages

• Information, whether true or false, that is deemed by the BOD to be inappropriate

Social Media will be monitored and maintained by –

• Editor - master

• Membership Director

• Secretary

Any content that is deemed inappropriate will be deleted by the editor without notice.

ARTICLE IX - GUIDELINES FOR CCC CREDIT CARD PROCESSING

Credit card processing will be assigned to enable proper accounting of funds and charges.

• All purchases will have an additional 3% fee to cover service charges.

• Each accounting segment will be assigned their own code.

• Personal cell phones and I pads will be used to make transactions.

• The treasurer will maintain a list of transaction codes.

• Transaction code for – Secretary – Club merchandise

• Transaction code for – Membership Director - membership dues.

• Transaction code for - Competition Director – Sanctioned event fees.

• Transaction code for – Social Director – Non-sanctioned event fees.

ARTICLE X - GUIDELINES FOR CCC CHARITY DISTRIBUTION

For the purpose of selecting Charitable Organizations for donations.

• A committee of four members in good standing will be selected by the two members at large.

• Any member can submit a recommendation to a Member at Large for a Charitable

• Organization to be added to the list. This must be done by February 28.

• This committee of six will meet in February and create a list of Charitable

• Organizations and submit that list at the Board of Directors meeting in March.

• From this list of Charitable Organizations, all members will select three at the General Meeting in March.

• The Board of Directors will review the tally and determine the three Charitable

• Organizations for funding for that calendar year. Any ties will be broken by a vote of the Board of

Directors.

• The fourth will be the National Corvette Council’s Charitable Organization for that calendar year.

• The charitable funds collected thru various sources will be split between the four Charitable Organizations

equally.

• The Charitable Organizations selected will be announced at the April General meeting and in the

newsletter.

• Funds will be distributed by end of business year.

The following paragraph should be moved from the Treasurer to the Members at Large.

• Maintain a list of all Corporation property. The list shall be updated whenever additional property is

purchased or acquired by any other means. Likewise, the list shall be updated whenever property is sold,

consumed, destroyed, discarded, or otherwise disposed of. The Members at Large shall schedule and

oversee an annual inventory of Corporation property and shall submit a corrected list to the Board at the

April BOD meeting for review and resolution of any discrepancies.

NOTE: Members at Large may delegate the responsibility for corporate property list maintenance to a

designated Quartermaster.

• The two Members at Large will select a committee of four “members in good standing” to select the final

four charitable organizations that will receive donations from the list of organizations provided by the

general membership. (See ref: Article X – Guidelines for CCC Charity Distribution.

Tooker. Somehow, he was the only on to win anything though…Weird, How does that happen?

3/31/18 CCC at the Museum of American Speed in Lincoln. I’ve never seen so many engines and

vintage race cars in one place in my life. The tour guides were outstanding.
