SERMON BLANKS: prayed, entrusted, committed, relationship redemption, resurrection

1. What discontent are you currently feeling during this pandemic crisis? How has this sermon brought into focus your need for contentment?

2. Read Luke 23:44-49. How did Jesus’ last words on the cross indicate contentment?

3. How do you need to look to the Father for yourcontentment and have absolute trust that He will see you through your circumstances?

4. Read Matthew 27:45-56. Jesus yielded up Hisspirit; the phrase can also be translated dismissed His spirit. Why is it important to understand that Jesus yielded His spirit to the Father of His own volition instead of it being taken from Him?

5. Read this quote from Deitrich Bonhoeffer:“Christianity is a religion of suffering; a man throws himself into the arms of God and awakes in Gethsemane. We must leave our cherished dreams at the feet of our crucified Savior. The cross is laid on every Christian. The first Christ-suffering which every man must experience is the call to abandon the attachments of this world. It is that dying of the old man which is the result of his encounter with Christ. As we embark upon discipleship we surrender ourselves to Christ in union with his death—we give over our lives to death. Thus it begins; the cross is not the terrible end to an otherwise God-fearing and happy life, but it meets us at the beginning of our communion with Christ. When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die. ... Only the man who is dead to his own will can follow Christ.”

What have you surrendered since you first identified as Jesus’ disciple? Why are those who surrender their desires able to follow Christ?

6. Which of the seven words in this pulpit series impacted you the most, and why?

“Contentment is the secret of inward peace. It remembers the stark truth that we brought nothing into the world and we can take nothing out of it. Life, in fact, is a pilgrimage from one moment of nakedness to another. So we should travel light and live simply. Our enemy is not possessions, butexcess. Our battle cry is not ‘Nothing!’but ‘Enough!’ We’ve got enough.”

John Stott

“Our quest is better and what is next. We want a better job with better pay and a better boss. We want better relationships and a better car and a better backhand in tennis or a longer drive in golf. And we have a propensity to live endlessly for the next thing—the next weekend, the next vacation, the next purchase, and the next experience. We are never satisfied, never content, and envious of those who have what we have not attained or accumulated."

Arthur Schlesinger, cited byRichard Swenson, M.D., inMargin: Restoring Emotional, Physical, Financial, and Time Reserves to Overloaded Lives

“Contentment is just the realizationthat God has already provided for me today all that I need for my present peace and happiness.”

Nancy Leigh Demoss

SERMON DEVOTIONAL STUDY

“Perhaps you are thinking, I will live as I please, and then at the last minute I will say, ‘Father, into Your hands I commit my spirit.’No, with few exceptions, you will die as you have lived. If God is not your Father now, it well might be impossible to accept Him

as your Father as death draws near. We are prepared for heaven when we embrace Christ as our sin bearer, accepting whatHe did on the cross for us. Only those who so believe in Jesus can entrust their spirits to the Father with integrity.”
