Source : CRS Pb Source : PCGA

Source : Agri Marketing December 2016 Market International cotton prices

fluctuated within a range of a few cents during December,

ending lower on balance. The Cotlook A Index started the

period at roughly 80.00 US cents per lb and advanced to a

high point of 80.70 cents mid-month, before declining to

reach a low of 78.20 cents around one week later. The

downward movement was prompted by lower settlements in

New York, which registered its lowest level since mid-

November. Mill buying activity was characterised by ‘on-call’

purchasing early in the period. The subsequent decline in

futures was reflected in shippers’ offering rates and

prompted a fairly active mill demand, mainly for nearby

delivery, for a relatively wide range of growths. Business was

concluded for West African, Brazilian, Central Asian and US

cotton among others, with the most persistent demand

emanating from the Indian Subcontinent. Pockets of forward

business were in evidence throughout the month. Source : Cotton Outlook

FERTILIZER

Fertilizers do not only assist in increasing yields and promoting healthy growth of plants but also in their development. They contain nitrogen which acts as a growth booster which can be characterized by the green color of plants. Phosphorus substance in fertilizers aids in the faster formation of seeds and root development. The availability of Nitrogen and Phosphate fertilizers remains normal in the month of November, 2016.

IRRIGATION WATER SUPPLY SITUATION Timely availability of water greatly influences the crop production and yields. In order to meet the agricultural needs, adequate and timely availability of water is an essential pre-requisite. The average uses of Water in Rabi 2016-17 season in the Punjab is about 19.751 MAF and Punjab share based on forecast of water availability is 16.160. The canal water supply during November , 2016 is 3.795 MAF as compared to last year 3.723 MAF shows an increase of 1.93%.

WEATHER SUMMARY FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER,2016 In Pakistan, winter rains generally start in the month of December. But this time dry continental air/foggy atmosphere prevailed over most of the agricultural plains of the country during the month. Accordingly, mostly dry weather was reported from the agricultural plains of the country except Peshawar in KP, Jhelum in Potohar region and Quetta valley in Balochistan where light rainfall reported during the month. Highest rainfall recorded in the country was 37 mm in Malam Jabba followed by 30.2 mm in Mirkhani, 29 mm in Dir, and 28 mm at Pattan. The evaporative demand of the atmosphere represented by reference crop evapotranspiration (ETo) remained normal to below normal in most of the agricultural plains of the country except Quetta valley in Balochistan, D.I. Khan in KP and Gilgit-Baltistan region where it remained slightly above normal due to mostly dry weather observed during the month in these areas. The highest value of ETo was estimated in Tandojam and D.I Khan. The mean daily Relative Humidity (R.H) also remained below normal in most of the agricultural plains of the country except in Tandojam where it has been recorded above normal during the month. Significant drop in R.H was observed in areas of north western Balochistan and GB region. Maximum value of mean Relative humidity was observed 71% at Lahore followed by 70% at Sargodha, while the minimum value was observed 37% at Quetta due to prevailing dry weather conditions. From an overall analysis during December, it is evident that well below normal rains have been received in most of the agricultural plains of the country. Due to persisting dry spell, farmers may use alternate resources to irrigate crops to maintain the appropriate moisture conditions in the agricultural soils. Temperature Regime during December, 2016 Temperature plays vital role in the growth and development of crops. Thermal regime in this month remained mostly normal to warmer in the agricultural plains of the country. The main reason for this trend is because of below normal rains as well as cloudy skies in the agricultural plains. Mean daily temperature remained normal to above normal by 1-4°C in all agricultural plains of the country. Mean daily temperature ranged between 14 to 16°C in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 15 to 18°C in Punjab, rounded to 20°C in agricultural plaines of Sindh, 2 to 6°C in Gilgit-Baltistan region and it was observed 10°C in the high elevated agricultural plains of Baluchistan represented by Quetta valley. The night time temperature represented by mean minimum remained above normal in all the agricultural plains of the country except Tandojam in lower Sindh and GB where it was recorded below normal. The lowest minimum temperature recorded AS -6.8°C at Skardu. Agricultural soils showed mostly normal to warmer trend at shallow, intermediate and deep layers in the major agricultural areas of the country due to the dry weather conditions. From the general analysis of air and soil in this month, it is concluded that moisture stress is observed in the agricultural plains due to continuous dry weather during the season. However, moisture deficiency still exists in lower parts of the country. Further rains are needed particularly in rainfed areas for better soil moisture conditions and normal growth of wheat crop. Solar Radiation and Wind Regime during December, 2016 Total bright sunshine hours and solar radiation intensity remained normal to below normal in most of the agricultural plains of the country except Quetta valley, Rawalpindi in Potohar region and GB region where these values observed above normal. Mean wind speed throughout agricultural plains of the country ranged between 1 to 6 km/h with North-east to North-west and South trend. Maximum wind speed was observed 6km/h in D.I.Khan.

NORMALLY EXPECTED WEATHER DURING JANUARY, 2017 Winter rains with Pakistan region are associated with Westerly Waves and frontogeneses processes

taking place at middle latitudes. Westerly waves are always present around the globe. As soon as, perturbation

takes place in these waves due to contrasting meteorological factors, they get amplified extending their trough

down to lower latitudes in subtropical regions. Formation of fronts due to encounter of two air masses of

different characteristics, is another significant source of winter weather systems. Winter rain bearing systems

attain their maturity in December under normal meteorological behavior around the globe.

Rainfed plains of Balochistan and Potohar plateau are expected to receive 20mm to 40mm precipitation, which

recharge the soil moisture up to some extent. However, the distribution over time and space would be much

more important than the amount of the precipitation. The farmers of these areas have to show an efficient rain

water harvest skill by completely rooting out the weeds, competing their crops for food and water. In other

parts of the country, the rainfall may amount less than 20mm during January. The strict weeding practice is

also recommended in irrigated areas.

The evaporative demand of the atmosphere will be lower than December due to cooler and up to certain extent

the cloudy atmosphere. It is likely to range from 1 to 3 mm/day throughout the country. The mean daily

relative humidity may vary between 50% and 65%. The crop growth may be retarded due to low temperatures;

however, they would be beneficial in tillering process in cereal crop. The day time temperatures may range

between 16°C to 20°C in Northern Punjab and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa while in the low elevation plains

are likely to experience them from 20°C to 24°C. The night temperatures possess a special significance; when

they drop below freezing level and keep watch on the growth of animals and plants. If protection measures are

not taken. Care of the frost kills the crop plants and even sometime badly affects their yield.
