Language is the vehicle through which learners can demonstrate, apply and articulate their understanding of key concepts (Coyle cited in Lister 2014).

This series of workshops will offer a theoretical framework through which we shall explore Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) as a viable pedagogical approach. Each workshop will use practical activities from a discrete area of the curriculum to explore CLIL theory and provide opportunities for teachers to reflect on the activities offered and identify adaptations appropriate for their own context. Recent research concludes that whilst language proficiency does improve as a result of a content led approach, such as CLIL, there are also significant benefits in terms of the subject content, an area which this series of workshops aims to explore further.

This summer school is open to both teachers of languages and curriculum subject teachers at all age phases of education. No specialist knowledge of CLIL or any subject is required, however this course will be taught in the medium of English and French (working knowledge of one of these will be required).

This course will be taught by Sarah Lister and Pauline Palmer who are Senior Lecturers within the Faculty of Education.

Sarah and Pauline’s research and academic interests include motivation and attitudes towards language learning and CLIL. Specifically, this has been applied to exploring synergies between the teaching of mathematics and MFL, with a range of workshop activities and EU wide collaborative activities already held.

Come along to our summer school in Manchester for a week of inspiring CLIL workshops, seminars and sessions devoted to providing support with using languages in the classroom. A great opportunity to network and exchange ideas with other teachers from across Europe championing CLIL pedagogy.

CLIL provides a meaningful, purposeful context for language learning. CLIL classroom

practice provides a more holistic, purposeful and authentic way of teaching and learning

languages, a view and hypothesis central to this initiative.
