Here are a few words from him before returning to Japan: “It was my great honor to be a part of this project. Over two years, I learned a lot from partners in ASEAN and Japan and colleagues in Secretariat which is my precious asset for the rest of my life. I sincerely wish this project successfully creates “seeds” for the future of the region.” Mr. Fujinuma Shigeki has been appointed as Chief Coordinator and Unit Chief of Resource Management (RM) Unit with effective from 3 February 2015. “It is my utmost pleasure working for ASEAN and Japan, through this genuinely valuable project with long history. I look forward to serving all of the people concerned such as member universities and colleagues in order that we can reap more fruits from this meaningful activity.” Mr. Tananchon Suttichuay has joined the project as Program Officer of Planning and Capacity Development Unit with effective from 26 March 2015. “It’s a great opportunity to explore deeply and tremendously in the realm of development while sharpening my professional skills in such area. Mr. Kobayashi Tokumitsu, Chief Coordinator and Unit Chief of Research & Networking Promotion Unit, has completed his 2-year assignment with AUN/SEED-Net Secretariat in February, 2015. Here are a few words from him before returning to Japan:

“It was my great honor to be a part of this project.

Over two years, I learned a lot from partners in ASEAN and Japan and colleagues in Secretariat which is my precious asset for the rest of my life.

I sincerely wish this project successfully creates “seeds” for the future of the region.”

In January, there was the orientation session for new students studying at CU. This semester, CU welcomed new students from Indonesia and Vietnam. The session was held together with the International School of Engineering (ISE), and information was shared to help facilitate the students’ studies and living in Thailand. In addition, there was VDO Conference conducted monitoring and orientation session for students at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)

In February, representatives from AUN/SEED-Net Secretariat visited Kuala Lumpur. We had monitoring session with students studying at UM and their advisors. In general, they were happy with their study. The trip was wrapped up by a courtesy visit to Malaysian-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) and to JICA Malaysia office.

Lastly, in March, 2015, AUN/SEED-Net visited NUS and NTU. For 2014 intake at NUS, there is one Philippine student enrolling under the Computer and Information Engineering and one Malaysian student under the Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. And for 2014 intake at NTU, there are two Thai students and two Vietnamese students enrolling under the Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. During the visits, current and new students shared experiences on their livings, studies and thesis update. The comments of each visit were discussed with NUS and NTU faculty staff respectively for better understanding and further improvement of students study progress

Research and Mobility Programs Application Result Announcement

On 22 February - 7 March 2015, the Intensive Training on Promotion for University - Industry Linkage (U-I Training) for JFY 2014 was held in Toyohashi and Nagoya, Japan, with the kind cooperation from Toyohashi University of Technology and JICA Chubu International Center. Twelve participants from 12 Member Institutions in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam were invited to jointhe 2-week program which aims to share knowledge and case studies of how to organize and formulate effective and efficient U-I linkage activities. The training program consisted of lectures and site visits to universities, private companies and government organizations who have University-Industry-Government (U-I-G) linkage in Toyohashi and Aichi prefecture. The training is conducted in the Training-of-Trainers (TOT) manner, and each participant must conduct a second training at their Member Institutions to share the knowledge they gained from this course.

The secretariat made a visit to the Material Engineering Laboratory, Kasetsart University (KU) in Bangkok, Thailand. The visit was warmly welcomed by Asst. Prof. Dr. Orathai Jongprateep and Asst. Prof. Dr. Ampika Bansiddhi, faculty staff who former participated in Regional Conference (RC) in Energy Engineering (EneE) in 2013 while the latter in Intensive Course on Management of Technology (MOT) in Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2014. During the visit, they introduced the faculty staffs and the activities in the laboratory. One of the activities was the establishment of Material Innovation Center where Asst. Prof. Dr. Ampika can utilize the knowledge of MOT. The secretariat was later led to observe the atmosphere of the laboratory whose vision is to be a leader in the material science and engineering in ASEAN. At the end of the visit, the secretariat expressed a sincere appreciation for their kind hospitality and support for the

AUN/SEED-Net and also encouraged not only the Material Engineering Laboratory but also Faculty of Engineering in Kasetsart University to maintain the active collaboration with AUN/SEED-Net in the future.

New release of ASEAN Engineering Journal (AEJ)

AUN/SEED-Net on FNA Magazine Thailand (4th Issue)

AUN/SEED-Net issued an article on FNA Magazine Thailand Vol.5 Jan. 2015, a quarterly magazine for Japanese manufacturing industry in Thailand.

We have issued four-part series of article to widely disseminate our activities on university-industry linkage. This was the 4th issue and we invited Asst. Prof. Prayoon Shiowattana, Director of the

National Institute of Metrology Thailand (NIMT) and the Chairperson of the SEED-Net University-Industry Advisory Committee, to listen to his strategic insights of university-industry collaboration in Thailand as well as ASEAN.

Mr. WATANABE, Deputy Chief Advisor at AUN/SEED-Net, was invited to deliver a presentation on "International Funding Programs: Opportunities for Thai Researchers" at 11th National Science and Technology Development Agency,Thailand (NSTDA) Annual Conference 2015 which took place on March 31st, 2015. The seminar featured introduction sessions from various research funding agencies namely e-ASIA JRP & SATREPS, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), EURAXESS Links ASEAN, Thailand Research Fund (TRF), and Project Policy Partnership on STI-APEC. Audiences learnt a variety of mobility schemes and research funding programs which are not only limited to ASEAN but also to Europe.

AUN/SEED-Net at 11th NSTDA Annual Conference 2015

Prof. Naohiro HOZUMI, Director of International Cooperation Center for Engineering Education Development, TUT, paid a friendly visit to the AUN/SEED-Net Secretariat on 29 January 2015 to discuss coming U-I Linkage Promotion Training hosted by TUT in February, in Japan.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norhazilan bin Md. Noor, Academic Manager of Research, and Editor-in-Chief of Malaysian Journal of Civil Engineering, UTM and team visited on 11 February 2015 to discuss about arrangements for the upcoming APSEC-ACEC 2015 conference to be held at UTM on 3-5 November 2015.

On 17 February 2015, A mission headed by Prof. Datin Dr. Rubiyah Yusof, Dean MJIIT-UTM, visted AUN/SEED-Net secreatariat to discuss on activities such as Regional Conference (Electrical and Electronics Engineering), Intensive Training for Management of Technology (Intensive MOT) and University-Industry Collaboration Seminar.

Prof. Yasushi KIYOKI from Keio University and Prof. Petchporn Chawakitchareon from CU kindly visited AUN/SEED-Net on March 12, 2015. We had a fruitful discussion on Collaborative Research for Common Regional Issue in order to strengthen research collaboration between MI and JSU.

Dr. Hiromi Shinoda, National Institute of Science and Technology Policy, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, visited AUN/SEED-Net Secretariat office on 18 March 2015 to have interview about our activity and the trend of student mobility among ASEAN countries and Japan.
