MASQUERADINGTHE MASKS OFVENICE

Special Feature Ralph Magaña

Venetian masks have been worn in Venice, Italy, since antiquity and have a long history of protecting their wearer's identity. Made for centu-ries in Venice, they were formed from paper-mache and decorated with fur, fabric, gems, or feathers. Venetian masks emerged as the emblem of the Carnevale of Venice.

Unlike the vast majority of their coun-terparts in contemporary Europe, each citizen in Venice enjoyed a high stan-dard of living. With a level of social wealth unequaled since, the citizens of Venice developed a unique culture—one in which the concealing of the identity in daily life became paramount to daily activity. Part of the secrecy was pragmatic: there were things to do, people to see, and perhaps you might not want others to know what deals you were cutting in the small city of Venice where everyone knew everyone.

The masks served an important social purpose of keeping every citizen on an equal playing field. Masked, a servant could be mistaken for a nobleman—or vice versa. State inquisitors and spies could question citizens without fear of their true identity being discovered (and citizens could answer without fear of retribution). The morale of the peo-ple was maintained through the use of masks—for with no faces, everyone had voices.

The modern celebration of Venetian Carnival has reinvigorated the art and craft of making Venetian masks. Recog-nizable types of Venetian masks con-tinue to dazzle tourists, dancers, and pageant participants during Carnival and year round. Wearing Venetian masks has spread to Halloween mas-querade balls and what North and South Americans call Mardi Gras, but they will always carry their rich Italian history.

Barbara Boutique is a favorite a week-end, week-out nightout look with all the styles, col-ors, and fabrics you can imagine. Her large and always revolving inventory assures no two girls are caught in the same gear on a festive night out! Shown here are four different lengths to choose from-split long, mini-cocktail, full long, and medium cut cocktail dress.

Each of these popular designs are suited to look best on different body shapes for opti-mum appearance. And, It ’s always nice hav-ing a pair of Barbara’s heals those goes with all four looks. Big thanks to Amanda Marie for modeling these precious fits from Barbara Boutique.

Whats Hot this Fall for evening wear, smart ca-sual, and fitness wear as days get shorter, nights get cooler? As we get fashion ready for the new season, here is our take on what’s hitting the streets from some local area boutiques and retailers.

Smart casual denotes a classy look for just about any daily affair from school time to light shopping to friendly weekend gatherings. But, the smart girl knows all eyes are on the gear no matter how who’s having what and where? The trouble is finding reasonable priced smart cas that isnt in everyone else’s closet.

New on the fashion scene in Southeast Ed-inburg is LUSH21 Boutique operated by Barbie Nicole Romo. Her tastes are perfectly matched for the reasonably priced wardrobe in smart casual that will project a pricey ap-pearance. Thanks to Aryy NayLett for model-ing LUSH21’s garments.

Fashion Tribute by Ralph Magaña

On July 14th an Upper Valley Fashion Icon, James Landon Jones Jr. passed away at the age of 62. The principal owner of Jones & Jones, a high end clothing store in North McAllen, Lan and his predecessors were instrumental in putting McAllen on the fashion map in all of Texas. You had to travel as far as Dallas to find the premium merchandise customers became accustomed to look for at their initial location in downtown McAllen, later at their mall location, and now at their showroom in North McAllen.

As a young man in search of fine label sports coats, pop-ular Italian ties and pinpoint button down cotton shirts the pickins were pretty slim in McAllen back in the early 80’s but Jones & Jones really stood out with outstanding selections and unmatched personalized service. Within 30 seconds of walking through the front door you’d be greeted by just about everyone including your favorite sales assistant who could size you up (including your inseam) in a split second and have outfits in your size and style ready to try on minutes later in a multitude of options. And he always knew the right thing to say to en-courage a decisive sale. This was the typical experience of I and any shopper at Jones & Jones. And, this was the world Lan helped to create along with his father Jim Jones and his grandmother, Amy before them.

A young teacher, Amy Jones and her mechanically mind-ed husband, Frank Jones, opened McAllen’s first station-ary and book store, Jones Book Store in 1926. It became a gift shop soon after as Amy with her artistic flair de-veloped a taste for fine objects to please the affluent clientele who were creating fortunes from the expanding citrus, land, and gas industries.

After World War II, the office and stationery business separated from the gift business. Frank ran the office sup-ply store and Amy handled the gift store with the newly

acquired name of Jones & Jones. To expand their inven-tories, the gift shop moved to a three story building in downtown McAllen. Their son Jim joined the team and introduced the idea of adding a furniture and interior decorating studio as Jones & Jones expanded it’s new floor space into other specialty departments including an employee dining facility that later on became the Patio Restaurant. The restaurant went on to become an important gathering spot for McAllen residents.

As the store continued to expand in the popular down-town shopping district Amy added a ladies fashion de-partment in 1957 making Jones & Jones one of the only business establishments to do so who are still in operation today. Then, in the 1960’s plans were made for a new larger store. Jim’s son Lan Jones and daughter Jill Jones joined the family business and in May of 1976 opened a new 90,000 square foot store in the new La Plaza Mall north of the airport. During their greatest expansion Lan and Jill added men’s apparel, precious jewelry, ladies shoes, a gourmet shop, an Orlane spa, and a beauty shop to the new La Plaza Mall location.

The store operated there for another 20 years and then in a lucrative deal the family turned over their prime mall location facing N. 10th Street to Foley’s. The location was Foley’s only gateway into La Plaza Mall at that time so it was an offer the Joneses found hard to refuse since his daughter Jill had just married a prominent San Antonio area physician and planned to relocated there, and since Jim was wanting to spend more time at their Summer home in Ruidoso, New Mexico.

In 1997 Lan Jones, continuing a long established family tradition, opened the new, smaller Jones & Jones in North McAllen. It offered a more personalized and exclusive shopping experience for their customers, but also con-tinues the Joneses tradition of providing high quality, styl-

ish merchandise that you just can’t find anywhere else in the Valley. The 17,000 square foot showroom located in Uptown Shopping Center on North 10th Street offers the same high expectations of quality, style, and tradition Jones & Jones customers have come to expect for nearly a century. On their showroom floor you will find brands like St. John, Basler, Eli Tahari, Robert Talbott, Oxford, Bill Khaki’s Baccarat, Virgins, Saints & Angels, Vagabond, Beretta, Southern Tide, J Brand, Vince, and Robert Cav-alli to mention a few.

Lan’s final project was to open the new Jones & Jones Fine Jewelry Department. Surviving daughter Mary Landon, and wife Mary Vance, along with the help of buyer Betty Blanco have made his dream a reality. Lo-cated on the far south side of the Uptown store Jones & Jones Jewelry triple is now open to the public. In typical Jones fashion it stocks exquisite and hard to find, fabulous

jewelry pieces. On the north side of store you will find the men’s apparel department including a new section of Beretta sportswear and hunting accessories while in the large center there is the extensive Jones & Jones women’s apparel department. Other departments including an exclusive section from Pineda Covalin including fine silk scarfs, swimwear and ties designed from famous Mexican artwork and nature themes.

Look for the Jones & Jones Jewels Grand Opening on October 17th of this year as Mary Landon of the fourth generation of Joneses continue a tradition of excellence so well established by Lan Jones and his forefathers.

Cleansing has become a new fad especially since celebrities like Salma Hayek, Beyoncé and Gw-yneth Paltrow revealed it’s their preparation regimen for weight loss before they grace the red carpet or shoot a movie role. Cleansing is detoxification of the free radicals and toxins that build up in the body’s organs and blood from food containing preserva-tives, pesticides, and growth hormones, etc., thus result in bloating, fatigue, internal inflammation, and also been linked to cellulite and increased rate of aging. Detoxing can boost of efficiency the vital or-gans, increase energy and promote weight loss.

There are multiple types of cleanses, juicing being the most controversial and difficult because it requires consuming only freshly juiced fruits and veggies which replaces daily meals. Other cleanses include meals with a low calorie intake, although it shows a great amount of weight loss, the weight is gained back shortly after the cleanse and most people feel side effects such as: low energy, low blood sugar, muscle aches, fatigue, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, and nausea. These types of cleanses can be particularly dangerous to those who have diabetes or problems with blood pressure.

Another form is buying products like pills and fluids that help flush out the toxins. The important thing to look for when buying the cleansing product is the labeling. Make sure the ingredients do not contain

any fillers and binders and be weary of products on the internet that could be scams. One product that contains natural ingredients is Pure Cleanse, it does not require a change in diet and is pharmaceutical grade.

Although it may seem unorthodox, yoga is another form of detoxing. Yoga is known to combat high-blood pressure and heart problems, ward off osteo-porosis, improve respiration, increase energy, flexibility and strength, but what makes yoga apart of detoxify-ing is the diaphragmatic breathing technique. Irma Burr M. Ed, RYT, explains that the diaphragmatic breath is different form of breathing because it “rises the abdomen and contracts,” combined with stretch-ing it activates the glands which calm the nervous system and distress that muscles.

The practice is also great for clearing the mind, yoga provides a calm and peaceful atmosphere helping relax the mind from the everyday hectic lifestyle. It helps find the limits and challenges of the mind and body. This western ritual has popularized because of it many benefits with little risk and its ability to reach a vast age group. Yoga can be practice at almost any age from children to the elderly, there are even prenatal and postnatal classes.

All Eyes On Judge Rose Guerra Reyna

Judge Rose Guerra Reyna was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. Rose was one of five children born to Rebecca Flores Guerra and the late Antonio Guerra. She attended McAllen ISD schools as a child culminating in her graduation from McAllen High School in 1978.

Inspired by her father, who pursued a college education late in life, Rose went on to study and graduate Magna Cum Laude with Government and English degrees from the University of Texas Pan American. To this day, Rose remembers her father ’s words, “There is only one thing no one can take away from you once you have it, and THAT is your education.” Rose went on to earn her law degree from the University of Texas School of Law, graduat-ing at the age of twenty-three.

After law school, Rose returned to South Texas to start her legal career at the Law Office of Ramon Garcia. After a year, Rose moved on to practice at Skaggs, Reyna & Garza, L.L.P. (formerly Lewis and Sk-aggs), a general litigation firm representing plaintiffs and defendants in a variety of jurisdictions cover-ings various subject matters. This practice included representation of plaintiffs and defendants in trial court (State and Federal), Court of Appeals, and the Texas Supreme Court. Rose was an Associate of the firm from 1985 to 1986 and became and remained a Partner from 1987 to 1998.

In 1998, Rose was elected by the people of Hi-dalgo County to serve as Judge of the 206th District Court. Rose was subsequently sworn in as Judge of the 206th Judicial District Court of Hidalgo County, Texas on January 1, 1999. This is a court of general jurisdiction hearing civil cases, family cases, felony criminal cases, and juvenile cases. Rose has served in numerous administrative advisory capacities in-cluding a statewide task force for the jury system and Able Term transition coordination.

Known for her hard work, ethics, fairness, and com-mitment to justice, Rose has earned the respect and trust of the people of Hidalgo County and across the State of Texas. Rose has been re-elected to the bench in three consecutive elections without con-test. At fifteen years of service, Rose is the longest serving female District Judge in Hidalgo County’s his-tory. She recently announced her bid for re-election to the courthouse.

As fashion aficionados cross the Pacific to the orient Geisha is trending with both traditional styles and some new, hybrid motifs that thrive on the vibrance of color, splendor of fabric, and the artistic face painting that is the Geisha trademark.

Traditional kimono dress of Geisha is of a rich silk fabric that is adorned with brilliant prints. It was originally designed to denote mystery and glamour for resourceful entertain-ers. The robe-like, one piece outfit drapes freely with a soft belt and is superbly comfortable to wear.

The widely familiar white powdered face trimmed with thin straight eye brows features a purified look of high status. Traditionally, vibrance is reserved for the immediate eye area including a well defined liner and lids. Rarely is there deviation from vibrant red lips that are of-ten reduced horizontally into the shape of a kiss.

Newer variations evoke bold hair silhouettes in black with silver highlights that are accessorized heavily with broach, sticks, flowers, and jewels, while contemporary makeup artists are keeping to tra-dition to this old craft. Progressive artists are experimenting in shape but not color that bring back to life these appearances with new inspiring directions.

Two of McAllen’s recognized chefs, Jess Zombiex and Adam Cavazos, have joined forces to open a new res-taurant named SPORK. This dynamic duo has the same synergy and complimentary comprehension of a cuisine style referred to as “New American.”. At their table, you join others in supporting sustainable agriculture that respects the abundance and traditions of the region while helping to ensure its future. Our local farms have worked closely with these innovative chefs and are most generous in providing the best they have to offer in order for them to create dining experiences that are beyond comparison.

Needless to say, it was with excitement and curiosity, that I recently attended a private four-course wine pairing dinner (sneak preview) at this venue. I loved the adven-turous sweep of chef inspired dishes reflected on the menu. Picture this: our evening began with...

Roasted beet salad: Peppery greens, blue cheese,

sweet and sour shallots, pistachios, sherry vinaigrette *Bella Glos Pinot Noir Blanc

Halibut a la plancha: Creamy farro, pickled onion, rad-ish, pea shoots, mango *Kono Sauvignon Blanc

*Steak-n-eggs: Hanger steak and fried quail egg, pota-to mouse, sweet onion marmalade, cured tomato, root veggies – this was my favorite dish! It paired beautifully with J.LOHR Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon (thanks to Bar Manager Jenny Vela). Overall the J.LOHR was a great straight forward and uncomplicated cabernet.

Peanut butter ice cream: Grape gelee, salted caramel and home-made vanilla ice cream*Taylor Fladgate 20 year-old Tawny Port

The pace was slow and leisurely …..Every bite we sa-vored was inventive and flavorful.

Due to open next month, Edgar ’s (part owner) aim with SPORK is to deliver sustainable cuisine combined with “sophisticated, warm friendly service and accessibility and approach ability for regular diners.”

The menu will be centered on a degustation style with diners choosing between two or three courses or a chef ’s tasting menu.

It’s not easy getting over the hill, specially when you are trying to keep pace with dynamic industries like fashion magazines, construction, real estate, and all the newer generation gizmos. I like keeping busy, staying on top of my game, and giv-ing it all I got. But, sometimes my busy lifestyle keeps me from being at my best and I need a boost to reach the top. So, I keep my distance from those high octane “cafenators” that only give me a kick in the head, and later on, a headache. Instead, about 10 years ago, I discovered a vitamin and mineral supplement, Regeneration by Nature’s Plus, and I have taken it ever since.Regeneration is a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement that I know will replen-ish all the “right stuff” I am lacking from missed meals. It’s loaded with botanical extracts and antioxidants for protection and brain power vitamins like Vitamin B6

at 2500% DV! It’s liquid ingredients come in a softgel casing that is easier on the stomach than powdered capsules. Find Regeneration at Major Health Foods in Tiffany Plaza, and tell them Ralph sent you!

In March 2012, at the age of 3, Aryanna Joy was diag-nosed with a rare myxoid sarcoma tumor in the left nasal cavity and upper hard palate. Aryanna had surgery for installation of a portacath and a g-tube. She began chemotherapy during the first week of April 2012. Af-ter three months of chemotherapy, the oncologist sent us to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston for a surgery consultation with an Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist. Aryanna underwent surgery for tumor removal on July 13, 2012. In the last week of September of 2012, Aryanna had a follow-up MRI that showed results of no tumor so oncologists agreed to remove both the portacath and g-tube in early November of 2012. We thanked God

for her healing with a huge birthday celebration for Ary-anna in October of 2012.

At the end of November 2012, Aryanna had a follow up appointment and underwent another MRI. The results showed the presence of another tumor. Shortly before Christmas of 2012 Aryanna once again began che-motherapy. After receiving five cycles of chemotherapy, Aryanna had tumor removal surgery at Texas Children’s Hospital on May 3, 2013. She had a quick and amaz-ing recovery. Six weeks after surgery, she received two more cycles of chemotherapy and was declared can-cer free on July 23, 2013 after a number of post treat-ment exams and scans.

Aryanna currently has follow-up appointments here lo-cally and in Houston to monitor her nasal cavity, upper palate and obturator adjustments. From the very begin-ning of her journey, Aryanna has remained relentless in her quest to be more than a conqueror of cancer in her life. Her motto is – “We never give up!” Although small in stature at only 4-years-old, she is “giant-sized” in her faith, hope, and love. She is to this day a fierce CON-QUEROR telling everyone that God is her strength and healer! Hope In Joy was founded in 2012 because of Aryanna’s dream and vision of blessing and encourag-ing for other children facing similar circumstances. Ary-anna rang the famous bell and was given a second chance for life. This little girl now only wants the same for other children like her so please help support her cause at Hope In Joy.
