What is a Contaminated Site?2. (1) For the purposes of section 111 of the Act,
a site is a contaminated site if(a) the land use is agricultural, commercial, industrial, park or
residential, and the concentration of any contaminant in the soil at the site is greater than or equal to(i) the generic numerical soil standards in Schedule 1, or(ii) the matrix numerical soil standards in Schedule 2;
or
(b) the surface water or groundwater which(i) is located on the site, or(ii) flows from the site
is used or has a reasonable probability of being used foraquatic life, irrigation, livestock or drinking water, and the concentration of any contaminant in the surface water orgroundwater is greater than or equal to the concentrationof that contaminant specified for that use in Schedule 3Page 7

Ex-situ – removal of contaminants from the site for treatment and/or disposal
In-situ – treating contaminants without removing it from the environment
Risk Management – reducing the risk to human health and the environment without removing the contaminants

Relocation Permit – required to move material from one site to another
Land Treatment Facility Permit – required to construct or operate to treat contaminated material
Risk-based restoration permit – required to implement site-specific cleanup standards developed through a risk assessment process
