INLAND WATERWAY SYSTEM
A list of barge companies serving the Port of New Orleans can be found at our website: http://portno.com/pno_pages/business_port_directory.asp
The Port of New Orleans is ideally situated to transport goods to and from America’s heartland using the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Throughout the world, barges have been used to efficiently transport cargoes by water.
Barge Traffic is the most cost effective method for transporting goods to and from the American Midwest and beyond. The Mississippi River consists of an inland waterway system which provides direct access to Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville, St. Louis, Chicago, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis and St. Paul. The 14,500-mile waterway system consists of rivers such as the Illinois, Ohio, Cumberland, Tennessee, Arkansas, Black, Atchafalaya, and Red River. In turn, the East-West Inland Waterway System is served by the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway System stretching from Florida to Mexico.
ThE PORT Of NEW ORLEANS is at the center of the world’s busiest port complex –
Louisiana’s Lower Mississippi River. Its proximity to the America’s Heartland via a 14,500-mile inland
waterway system, six Class 1 railways and the interstate highway system makes New Orleans the port
of choice. The Port of New Orleans is a leading port for cargoes such as steel, rubber, coffee, containers,
chemicals, metals, project cargos, forest products, agricultural products and manufactured goods.
GovernanceThe Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans governs the Port, sets policies and regulates traffic and commerce. The Board is made
up of seven commissioners who are unsalaried and serve five-year staggered terms. The Governor of Louisiana appoints board members from a
list of three nominees submitted by 19 local business, civic, labor, education and maritime groups.
facilitiesThe Port’s facilities include 20 million square feet of cargo handling area and more than 3.1 million square feet of covered storage area. The
Port’s facilities accommodate an average of 1,800 vessel calls each year. Overall, the Port’s 2.01-mile-long quay between Henry Clay Avenue
and Milan Street terminals is the world’s longest wharf and can accommodate as many as 15 vessels simultaneously. The 61-acre Napoleon
Avenue Container Terminal operates with six gantry cranes and a recent marshalling yard expansion that brings the terminal’s capacity to
640,000 TEUs. The Port has an additional expansion footprint at Napoleon Avenue that will support more than 1.2 million TEUs per year with
continued investment. A state-of-the-art dockside cold storage facility, the Henry Clay Avenue Refrigerated Terminal, was recently completed
and solidifies New Orleans as a leading exporter of poultry.
Intermodal AccessThe Port of New Orleans is America’s most intermodal port. It is connected to major markets across the continent by the interstate highway
system and is the only seaport in the U.S. served by all six Class 1 rail lines, 50 ocean carriers, 16 barge lines and 75 truck lines. The Clarence
Henry Truckway, a two-lane roadway on Port property, makes fast transit times even faster. The Port also offers near-dock rail and
ship-to-barge services.
