Charles Hanson’s legacy is his collection of North American waterfowl Charles Hanson has collected and mounted every species of ducks in North America as well as other waterfowl, game birds and birds of prey. To say that Village Place isunique would not do it jus-tice. Located in historic Lacqui Parle Village, it is acharming example of whatall adult group homes shouldaspire to be.
Owned and operated byDeb Ochsendorf, VillagePlace has quietly been pro-viding quality care to seniorsand disabled adults for 12years. The house is trulyhome to Ochsendorf, whoseparents built the home.
The house was construct-ed in 1934 by Deb’s par-ents, Olaf and Alice Peter-son. Olaf was a recycler ofsorts. He gathered lumberfor the home by disman-tling buildings that were setto be demolished. He thenreused the lumber to buildhis family a home in themidst of the Great Depres-sion. Deb still has memo-ries of helping her fatherpull nails from boards whenshe was a little girl.
In addition to herself,Ochsendorf has one part-timeemployee (her daughter,Marrisa Trexler), and onevolunteer that help out.
Village Place currentlyhas one client, but there isroom for three more. Wehave made it our missionto make our clients ‘fami-
ly’... this is the one ingre-dient that is missing inmost group homes andnursing homes,” said

Montevideo’s John Deere dealership wasalready a thriving business when Bill Kibblebought the dealership from Herman Meyer in1976.
Herman and Maria Meyer had owned andoperated Meyer Implement at the south end ofMontevideo’s main street since 1944. Their son,Norm, and his wife, Karen, later becameinvolved in the business.
During their time in business, the Meyers sawthe introduction of John Deere’s six-cylindertractor, the 4010, which was revolutionary at thetime.
Prior to the opening of Meyer Implement, areafarmers could order parts for John Deere equip-ment from Campbell Implement in Montevideo.
The history of the John Deere company datesback to 1837, when John Deere, a blacksmith,fashioned a Scottish steel saw blade into a plow.In 1923, John Deere’s model D tractor was intro-duced. The company’s first combine, the JohnDeere No. 2, was produced in 1927. In 1947,John Deere introduced its first self-propelledcombine, the model 55.
Today, John Deere is the largest agriculturalmachinery company in the world. employingapproximately 67,000 people worldwide.
When the Meyers opened their dealership,equipment was small enough that the downtownMontevideo location’s space was still adequate,
but getting increasingly crowded.
